Setel, introduced in 2018, has made things more convenient for motorists as they can make contactless payments. The mobile app allows motorists to make payments using their smartphone in the car when parked next to a Setel-linked pump at PETRONAS stations.
During the pandemic, the value of Setel was very clear as there was no need to interact with the cashier or even touch the keypad to enter the PIN. It was only a pity that the filling process still needs to be done by the driver but maybe one day, it will be automated, as Hyundai has shown with its prototype robot handling charging of EVs.
Over the years, Setel has kept track of feedback from users and noticed that there were some people who may have older phones with limited functionality and connectivity. It’s like having an old computer which has difficulty running the latest software, so new features cannot be enjoyed.
Setel users now have a more convenient option of starting refuelling with the ‘One-Tap Fuelling’ feature. This allows them to activate the pump with just one tap upon arrival at all PETRONAS stations nationwide. The new solution is available to the first 1,000 registered Setel users around Malaysia, with a staggered rollout in the next 2 months.
Current Setel users who are interested to receive early bird access can opt-in by posting an Instagram Story or Tweet of their Dah Setel So Far page with the caption: “I want One-Tap Fuelling now”, tag @setel and include the #SetelOneTapFuelling hashtag.
From now until October 4, 2022, they also have a chance to win limited edition Setel gift boxes when they upload their most creative video on Instagram or Twitter showing their experience using the ‘One-Tap Fuelling’ feature’
In the upcoming enhancements, motorists will be able to pre-set their preferred fuelling amount – either by litres or a full tank, in the Preferences page when setting up the new feature. Motorists can also pre-set their preferred payment method, which includes CardTerus for direct payments via a debit or credit card, as well as Setel Share, which allows users to share their Setel Wallet or CardTerus with two others to pay whilst jointly earning Mesra points.
“We are constantly innovating and developing solutions that meet our users’ ever-evolving needs, especially in this endemic period where Malaysians are travelling more frequently than before. Over the past 4 years, our loyal users have continuously raved about their refuelling experience at PETRONAS stations. With this new enhancement that brings about a refuelling journey from the usual 5 clicks to just one tap through a one-time setup, Setel offers a more personalised and faster refuelling journey for its users. Gone are the days of rummaging through wallets for cash or cards to refuel and earn loyalty points,” said Mazlin Erawati Ab Manan, Chief Executive Officer of Setel.
Setel’s contactless service can be used at EV charging stations as well.
Setel has been in the market since July 2018, offering a mobile platform for motorists patronising PETRONAS stations. In recent times, it has also added EV charging for use by those owning electric vehicles. Its services include Setel Express, an in-app service for Setel customers to track their e-commerce deliveries and pick up/drop off parcels at selected PETRONAS stations.
‘Contactless’, though not a new word, has been much-used during the past year with the onset of COVID-19 and the need for distancing to prevent transmission of the coronavirus. As far as possible, people have been encouraged not to be in direct contact with each other and even when conducting transactions, it is advisable to minimize contact through devices or other things.
Increased usage of e-wallets
For payments, electronic payments have been encouraged and this has led to increased usage of the e-wallet. A smartphone can be used for this transaction which reduces physical touch, with no need to exchange currency notes or coins.
The growing popularity of e-wallets, which are available from a number of providers, has led many businesses to accept them for payments. This includes Proton, which started to accept payment from e-wallets in June 2020 with 15 pilot outlets. The successful pilot program saw all 3S/4S outlets accepting e-wallet payments by the end of the year.
Payments for various transactions
Proton says that the payments can be for many different purposes. The e-wallet can even be used to book for a new vehicle and make the downpayment. The company also encourage its 1S and 2S outlets to opt for e-wallet transactions as this is a reliable, safe and convenient payment method.
Customers can use their e-wallets for transactions related to downpayments for new vehicles or for charges and purchases at service centres.
Additionally, e-wallet payments can also be used at service centres to pay for maintenance services, vehicle insurance renewal spare parts, accessories and even Proton merchandise.
Moving forward, Proton is also looking at strategizing the collaboration plan and system integration with e-wallet providers to deliver offerings that are beneficial to its customers.
Boustead Petroleum Marketing Sdn Bhd (the company marketing BHPetrol products and services) believes that with the arrival of the COVID-19 vaccine in Malaysia, economic and travel activities will be restored and thus resume petrol consumption nationwide.
The company notes that while the Movement Control Order (MCO) impacted traffic to all petrol stations, it is confident that consumer sentiment will be more positive and the economy and especially tourism will pick up now as the National COVID-19 Immunization Programme progresses.
For those who will be travelling more, the good news is that BHPetrol stations nationwide now accept the ShopeePay mobile wallet as a mode of payment. The partnership with ShopeePay is another step for the company towards the digitalisation of payments.
Improving products and services all the time
“At BHPetrol, we are always looking at ways to improve our offers in providing the best quality fuels, exciting offers and convenience for our customers; and so partnering with e-wallets like ShopeePay is a great example of an exciting promotion that also provides convenience to the customers,” said BHPetrol Marketing General Manager, Lawrence Chuah.
“This is not only a natural progression due to the COVID-19 situation, but also in line with the government’s MyDigital initiative which aggressively pushes for the adoption of contactless payment. More importantly, it also satisfies the change of consumer behavior towards more options of digital payment,” added Mr. Chuah.
He said that BHPetrol has always been heeding customer needs and being ahead of the game is important. “It is our nature to be progressive and hence, it was not difficult for us to maneuver and ride the changing tides. Accepting ShopeePay as an added payment mode offers our consumers more choice. We will always go further to help serving and rewarding our customers better,” he said.
ShopeePay can be used to make payments at BHPetrol stations and BHPetromarts nationwide.
Cashback for BHPetrol customers
Alain Yee, Head of ShopeePay, added that the timing of the partnership is such that it would best benefit Malaysians. “As economic sectors slowly begin to reopen and Malaysians head out for business as usual, the demand for petrol is set to rise again. ShopeePay users be rewarded with attractive cashback, putting more money back into the pockets of BHPetrol customers,” he added.
To commemorate the collaboration, users of ShopeePay who patronize any BHPetrol outlet with eWallet acceptance will receive RM4 cashback with a minimum spend of RM40. Each customer can receive a total of three cashbacks during the campaign period from today until April 30, 2021 (terms and conditions apply).
The free ShopeePay app for iOS and Android smartphones can be obtained at the Apple AppStore and Google Play Store. For more information on BHPetrol products and services or the location of stations, visit www,bhpetrol.com.my.
