The estimated overall cost of providing Light Rail Transit (LRT) infrastructure in Johor is projected to be RM16.7 billion, whereas the provision of Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) infrastructure is estimated to cost RM7 billion. Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh, the state executive councillor for Transport, Infrastructure, and Communications, revealed this valuation after a detailed comparison analysis between the LRT and ART systems, following presentations from two consortia proposing these public transport systems, as reported by Bernama.

Regarding the LRT system, Mohamad Fazli mentioned that it necessitates a new design for the elevated section and requires approval of the railway scheme. Additionally, infrastructure for depots and LRT stations would involve land acquisition for the depot in Desa Jaya and five acres of land for track switching/shunting.

A project for testing a QR code immigration clearance system in Johor is scheduled to commence in June, as announced by Baharuddin Tahir, the state Immigration director. According to The Star, the pilot project will be conducted at both the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI) and Sultan Abu Bakar Complex (KSAB) Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQs).

Initially, the plan is to launch the pilot project in June, although there is a possibility of it being delayed depending on the readiness of the infrastructure and system developed for the QR code clearance.

The QR code immigration clearance will initially be implemented for factory buses travelling through BSI and KSAB. If the pilot project proceeds smoothly, it will be expanded to include other modes of transportation. Johor will be the first state in Malaysia to implement such a QR code immigration clearance system.

The Johor Public Works Department (JKR) is set to embark on a transformative journey by upgrading roads with glow-in-the-dark markings, bringing a futuristic touch to road safety. State executive council member Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh revealed that JKR will meticulously list and assess roads earmarked for this innovative upgrade before the year concludes.

The initiative is backed by the state government’s commitment, as reflected in the 2024 Johor Budget, allocating RM1 million for the integration of light reflection technology into road markings. Mohamad Fazli emphasized that the identified roads would undergo the application of glow-in-the-dark technology in the coming year.

“JKR will assess which roads are suitable for using the glow-in-the-dark technology before the end of this year. The department will look at roads, especially in areas with improper wiring or no electrical poles, as well as those with dangerous and sharp road bends and roads connecting towns,” stated Mohamad Fazli during a press conference held after the launch of the Sungai Masai Bridge Project in Jalan Masai Lama.

For most people travelling to or from Singapore, the 100-year old Causeway across the Straits of Johor and the Second Link are the usually places for the crossing. As traffic volumes have increased and immigration procedures have also become more stringent, long queues have been a common sight at both sides.

There have been various proposals to add connections across the Straits including, at one time, a wider 6-lane ‘crooked bridge’ envisioned by former PM Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad. However, up till today, there are still only two crossings for vehicles.

Less well known is an alternative way to cross using the ferry services from Tanjung Belungkor and Desaru in Johor to Tanah Merah in Singapore. These ferry services, which commenced in the middle of last year, are not for cars though but provide an easier way for people to get across (about 35 minutes) instead of going through the jam at the Causeway and Second Link.

For most car companies, the southern region of Peninsular Malaysia accounts for many of their new vehicle sales. It is a prosperous region with steady development and opening of new townships. For this reason, network development gives a lot of focus to Johor and recently, Naza Kia Malaysia opened a new 3S outlet in Tampoi, Johor Bahru, in partnership with authorised dealer Supreme Priority Sdn Bhd.

Kia Tampoi Outlet

Located along Jalan Tampoi, the Kia Tampoi 3S Centre has a built-up area of 18,000 square feet. Its showroom can display up to 7 vehicles so visitors will be able to see a good selection of models. As a 3S centre, it offers sales, service and spare parts and is geared to handle up to 100 Kia vehicles a month. Supreme Priority invested RM5 million to establish this 3S outlet.

Serving owners in Tampoi and surroundings
The Kia Tampoi 3S Centre is also intended to serve owners in the surrounding areas of Tampoi New Village, Skudai, Nusajaya and Larkin. Its strategic location means that they now have a shorter distance to travel to get full aftersales support.

Johor has been a significant market for us as 90% of Korean car owners here own a Kia,” said R. Devaraju, Deputy Group CEO, Automotive Group, Naza Corporation Holdings.

Mr. Devaraju added that the company has plans in the pipeline to further enhance the current network and expand on the 45 Kia outlets nationwide.

Volvo Car Malaysia (VCM) is growing its dealer network as quickly as possible and with the appointment of Pekin Auto Sdn Bhd to cover the Johor Bahru area, the number of dealerships now stands at 13 nationwide.

Pekin Auto, located near Skudai, offers the full range of sales and aftersales services as it is a 3S Centre (Sales, Service, and Spare Parts). It will adhere to Volvo Cars’ latest Volvo Retail Experience (VRE) requirement, a standard that delivers a holistic brand experience for customers.

“VRE goes beyond its Scandinavian-inspired aesthetics; it is the manifestation of our brand values and our desire to take care of our customers throughout their whole journey with Volvo Cars,” said Nalin Jain, Managing Director of VCM. The first dealership to incorporate the VRE was the Federal Auto showroom at Menara MBMR in August 2016.

Volvo Retail Experience
The Volvo Retail Experience focusses on the space and design of the dealership and is designed to reflect Scandinavian-inspired values of calm, clean lines with ‘cool on the outside and warm on the inside’-style architecture.

Transformation plan
Volvo Car Malaysia is now aggressively implementing the next phase of its transformation plan with a premier focus set on ‘customer experience’ and dealer network. Internal polls are already showing positive results, thanks to improvements made in these two key areas.

“I am happy that our brand has been well-received in the market. We are committed in allowing our customers greater choice by appointing qualified and professional companies like Pekin Auto to represent the brand in key areas,” said Mr. Jain, adding that the company’s growth in representation, in turn, has helped record increased sales for the brand of more than 60% in the first half of 2019.
