“As Malaysia Day nears, we foresee many Malaysians taking vacations or returning to their hometowns. For their safety and peace of mind, it is crucial that their Perodua vehicles are in good working order,” said Perodua’s President & CEO, Dato’ Zainal Abidin Ahmad.

New Normal operating procedures
In view of the COVID-19 pandemic and the need to prevent its spread, comprehensive health and safety measures have been adopted for the protection of its valued customers and staff. Dato’ Zainal emphasised that these safety measures will be the new normal operating procedures for Tweckbot moving forward.

All Tweckbot customers will be required to undergo temperature checks and will need to comply with contact tracing protocols as mandated by the government. Tweckbot stations will have a more spaced-out layout with demarcated areas for waiting, consultation and vehicle inspection to minimise movement, and the entire station will be evacuated and sanitised twice a day.

“Our technicians will wear face shields at all times and every vehicle will be thoroughly sanitised before and after inspection. Physical distancing and the wearing of face masks apply at all times,” Dato’ Zainal said.

He added that for the protection of the public, the number of vehicles inspected has to be limited to slots on a first-come, first-served basis.

20% discount on parts/accessories

Perodua expands on public protection initiative

Perodua delivered a total of 23,203 vehicles last month, which was the best sales month in 2020 for the Malaysian carmaker, beating the June volume by 9.2%. This brings the cumulative volume for the first 7 months to 97,373 units. For the same period in 2019, it was over 141,000 units, which shows the impact that the Movement Control Order (MCO) had on new vehicle sales this year.

Three bestsellers of 2020
The carmaker estimates its July and year-to-date market shares to stand at 40% and 42%, respectively. The models contributing to this were the Myvi, Axia and Bezza which, according to Perodua, are Malaysia’s top three best-selling vehicles in the first seven months of 2020.

Cumulative sales of the Myvi were 29,313 units, while the Axia reached 28,107 units, and the Bezza ended July at 25,416 units.

“The Perodua Myvi, Malaysia’s best-selling vehicle every year since 2006, has recently been upgraded with the latest Advanced Safety Assist (ASA) 2.0 suite of driver assistance safety systems. It remains one of the most affordable cars with advanced safety features in the country,” said Perodua’s President & CEO, Dato’ Zainal Abidin Ahmad.

Higher sales will help automotive eco-system
“Since our operations restarted after the 2-month Movement Control Order (MCO) closure, sales volumes have rebounded swiftly, aided by the government’s sales tax exemption which will run until the end of the year. Should this encouraging trend continue, the healthy volume will enable us to further bolster Malaysia’s automotive eco-system of suppliers and dealers in this time of need,” he said.

According to Malaysia Automotive, Robotics and IoT Institute (MARii) estimates, a Total Industry Volume of at least 500,000 units is needed this year to ensure the continued survival of the automotive eco-system. The Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) has offered a forecast of 470,000 units of new vehicle sales after obtaining input from its members.

“Amidst the COVID-19 crisis, we understand that we must work to our fullest capacity to help shore up the Malaysian economy and ensure jobs are protected. As the market leader, Perodua’s utmost priority is to continue providing the best products and services to ensure maximum customer satisfaction. We are committed to continue offering better value propositions to all Malaysians in the forms of affordability, quality, technology and the latest advanced features,” said Dato’ Zainal.

All of Perodua’s current models have over 90% local content and with its economies of scale, service parts are affordable and readily available, giving its valued customers total peace of mind. Dato’ Zainal added that Perodua embodies the concept of ‘Simple, Slim and Compact’ in all its operations, including interactions with all its stakeholders, while never forgetting its People First focus.

Continuing its role as a good corporate citizen, Perodua has expanded on its public protection initiative with the recent distribution of a further 10,000 face shields within the Hulu Selangor district and Selayang municipality.

Recipients in Hulu Selangor, where the Malaysian carmaker has its headquarters and manufacturing complex, included the District Health Office, community and dental clinics, enforcers from the District Council’s (MDHS) Licensing Department, plus various morning and night market hawkers.

The carmaker also contributed face shields to the Selayang Municipal Council’s (MPS) Licensing and Enforcement Departments, and through them, hawkers and street sellers in the area.

“Perodua’s face shield contributions are our way of giving back to the surrounding communities who have supported and made us feel at home for the past 27 years,” said Perodua’s President & CEO,  Dato’ Zainal Abidin Ahmad said.

“As a People First company and a good corporate citizen, Perodua cares very much for the safety, health and well-being of the general public in these COVID-19 times. We have given out over 21,000 face shields to date; we hope they will be worn conscientiously and diligently by those going about their daily duties, bravely continuing to give all of us the services, healthcare and provisions we need,” he added.

Last month, prior to schools reopening, Perodua gave out some 11,000 face shields to secondary schools in Putrajaya and Hulu Selangor.

The face shields, manufactured by an associate of Perodua, feature a fog-resistant visor made of polyethylene terephthalate for optimal visibility, sponge cushioning that hugs the forehead to act as a barrier against airborne droplets, and an adjustable elastic band for a snug and comfortable fit.

“We are not out of the woods yet in our battle against COVID-19. We hope Malaysians will continue to adopt and adapt to the new normal by exercising caution and complying with all the government’s health and safety guidelines,” advised Dato’ Zainal.

Perodua has installed the Advanced Safety Assist (ASA) system on more variants of the Myvi (except the Myvi 1.3X). The suite of driver assist safety systems was first introduced on the current Myvi in 2017, with an improved version – ASA 2.0 – introduced with the Aruz SUV last year. The latest Myvi gets the upgraded 2.0 version which can also be found on the Axia and Bezza.

With the initial ASA system, the Pre-Collision Warning and Pre-Collision Braking (Automatic Emergency Braking or AEB) were active up to 30 km/h). The system also included Front Departure Alert and Pedal Misoperation Control, all working together to reduce collisions.

ASA 2.0 has a higher active speed of 100 km/h for the Pre-Collision Warning and 80 km/h for Pre-Collision Braking. Additionally, where the earlier system detected only vehicles ahead, the second generation can also detect pedestrians (up to 50 km/h). Such features used to be available only on much more expensive cars.

“The latest Myvi carries on the Perodua tradition of bringing advanced safety technology to the people by making it affordable and accessible to all. With the inclusion of ASA 2.0, the Perodua Myvi takes advanced safety to a whole new level at this price point, and it’s now more widely available within the line-up,” said Perodua President & CEO, Dato’ Zainal Abidin Ahmad. “

Besides the upgraded safety system, the Myvi also gets a new body colour – Electric Blue, which is available for all variants. The other available colours are Ivory White, Glittering Silver, Lava Red and Granite Grey (all variants except the 1.3G).

While a large proportion of Perodua’s sales are in Peninsular Malaysia, the carmaker does not also forget that the East Malaysia markets have also contribute to its ascent to being the No. 1 brand in the country. And like a good corporate citizen, the company has been giving back to the local community there.

Recently, the Sabah Women and Children’s Hospital received a portable flexible videoscope set, while 250 underprivileged paediatric patients received contributions ranging from school supplies to prescription glasses, courtesy of Perodua.

Of the 250 child patients, 200 patients aged below 12 received stationery while the remaining 50 outpatient kids were given prescription glasses. “While Malaysia is showing positive signs in the fight against COVID-19, we now include other priorities to ensure the quality of life improves in this country,” said Perodua President & CEO, Dato’ Zainal Abidin Ahmad.

“In addition to that, our contributions here are our way of thanking the good staff of Sabah Women and Children’s Hospital for tirelessly and selflessly caring for the patients,” he added.

Perodua first engaged with the Sabah Women and Children’s Hospital in 2018, contributing two laryngoscope blade sets and 40 bed pillows, and toys for some 250 child patients. “Based on feedback from the hospital, we have decided to further assist this health institution to further increase its capabilities as well as contribute directly to the community.

“It is important that Perodua continues its role as a responsible and caring organisation towards the Malaysian community who has strongly supported us over the years,” he added.

Last month, ahead of the reopening of schools, the carmaker distributed over 5,000 face shields to 17 secondary schools in the Hulu Selangor district which its vehicle manufacturing complex is situated in.

About a week ago, on July 3, Perodua’s dealer in Brunei launched the latest Myvi for that market. It was the usual sort of launch of a new model but among the variants displayed was one called the Myvi S-Edition. The existence of such a variant caught the Perodua people by surprise since they do not have any Myvi S-Edition sold in Malaysia or anywhere else in the world.

Some Perodua fans who keep up with news of their favourite brand also noticed the ‘special edition’ and wondered why it was available in Brunei but not Malaysia. Well, it is not unusual that some markets may have a variant or specification which are not available in the home market of the manufacturer. These may be export versions or specially developed versions to suit certain markets.

Peodua Myvi S-Edition Brunei

In the case of the Myvi S-Edition, the variant had a bodykit to enhance its looks but this bodykit was not developed by Perodua and it appears that they were not aware of it either, from what we gather from the statement issued by Perodua’s President & CEO, Dato’ Zainal Abidin Ahmad.

“Perodua Brunei introduced its own version of the Myvi 1.3L G variant, dubbed the S-Edition, which include enhanced bodykits which were sourced independently by our appointed distributor GHK Motors,” he said.

“Based on the feedback from GHK Motors, the introduction of the Myvi S-Edition was its attempt to introduce a variant that was better suited to their market needs. We are engaging with GHK Motors for more details about this variant to ensure that the additions to this variant meet the required standards,” he added.

The statement was issued today for clarification as Perodua is aware of some confusion caused to its loyal customers.

Like other manufacturers, Perodua is serious about protecting its image and reputation, especially where it concerns quality. When it develops its cars, every part and system is thoroughly tested for durability and reliability before it is approved for use. This is understandable since a defective or unreliable part can cause a breakdown and in an extreme case, even an accident, and that is something a responsible manufacturer like Perodua will not want to cause.

GearUp
Every item in Perodua’s GearUp line of accessories has to be thoroughly tested to ensure quality, reliability, durability and safety before it is offered for sale.

Even bodykits and other accessories are subject to the same rigorous testing by the R&D division to ensure they meet the required standards. Therefore, if a distributor or dealer wants to install items which did not come with the car, they must first let Perodua test the items and give its approval.

Proton also had a similar issue long ago with its distributor in the Philippines which also assembled the Wira. The company there added a turbocharger to the engine in the Wira for sale to the public. This was a modification which had not received Proton’s approval and certainly, it was against warranty conditions. If the engine failed due to the turbocharger boosting performance and causing too much stress, for example, the customer would likely blame Proton and that would spoil its reputation.

The government’s move to exempt the 10% sales tax on new locally-assembled vehicles is aimed at helping the auto industry to recover after the many weeks of being forced to suspend operations. Hopefully, it will encourage people to buy at a time when many are concerned about the future.

The move seems to be working as most companies have reported seeing more orders coming in. No. 1 brand Perodua has reported a sales volume of around 21,250 vehicles for the month of June. That’s the highest figure it has registered so far in 2020 and nearly triple of the May volume (although showrooms were open only after the middle of the month). Its total volume after the first 6 months of 2020 is in the region of 74,000 units; in the same month a year ago, the volume was 121,782 units.

Of course, Perodua has usually been slightly behind the supply curve – not necessarily a bad thing – as it has had a backlog of orders due to the popularity of its models. The suspension of business for many weeks would have reduced the backlog somewhat although new demand should fill the order books again before long.

Perodua managed to deliver 8,601 vehicles in March before the Movement Control Order (MCO) came into effect on the 18th day, halting the carmaker’s nationwide operations for two months. The carmaker officially restarted nationwide on May 19 and delivered 7,886 vehicles before the month ended.

“The government’s sales tax exemption move has had many benefits. Buyers can enjoy reduced vehicle prices – in Perodua’s case, 3%-6% less – until the end of 2020,” said Perodua’s President & CEO, Dato’ Zainal Abidin Ahmad.

On the aftersales side, operating hours have also been extended (at selected service centres). “Customers looking to service their vehicles are invited to secure an appointment with their service centre of choice,” said Dato’ Zainal.

As always, Perodua does not forget the need to help suppliers who were impacted by the MCO. According to Dato’ Zainal, the company purchased nearly RM500 million worth of local components in June alone. “The sizeable volume increase we’ve had as a result of the increased sales allows us to help the supplier and dealer ecosystem in this time of need,” he said.

“We reiterate our commitment to the government, as Malaysia’s biggest carmaker by volume, to help the industry and ecosystem wherever we can, including sustaining employment, so that we can all get through this difficult time,” he added.

Ahead of the reopening of schools on tomorrow, Perodua has distributed over 5,000 face shields produced by its associate to 17 secondary schools in the Hulu Selangor district which the vehicle manufacturing complex is situated in.

For Form 5 and Form 6 students
“We contribute these face shields for the use of Form 5 and Form 6 students, teachers and support staff as they return to school after a 3-month closure brought about by the Movement Control Order (MCO),” said Perodua President & CEO, Dato’ Zainal Abidin Ahmad. “Although our children, teachers and support staff will no doubt be returning to school wearing face masks, the wearing of face shields would serve as a good extra precautionary measure.

“As a caring, People First company, we believe in going beyond when it comes to safety, especially when our beloved children are involved and particularly those less fortunate,” he added.

The face shield features a fog-resistant visor made of polyethylene terephthalate for optimal visibility, sponge cushioning that hugs the forehead to act as a barrier against airborne droplets, and an adjustable elastic band for a snug and comfortable fit.

The Malaysian carmaker also contributed face shields to the Hulu Selangor District Education Office in Kuala Kubu Bharu.

Contributing to the fight against COVID-19
“Perodua is happy to be contributing to Malaysia’s fight against COVID-19 by continuing to make face shields and we are looking at distributing them to community clinics in the Hulu Selangor district very soon,” Dato’ Zainal said.

“We thank the government, especially the Health Ministry, and all frontliners for working so hard to guide our nation through the COVID-19 crisis. Although we have made considerable progress, we hope the Malaysian public will continue exercising caution and complying with all health and safety guidelines,” he added.

In a recent announcement, the government will exempt the 10% Sales Tax  on new vehicle purchases. The exemption, to be effective from June 15, 2020, will be 100% of the tax value for locally-assembled models and 50% for imported models (CBU or completely built-up). This is one of the initiatives by the government under the to help the auto industry regain sales momentum.

However, before June 15, Perodua will reduce prices (on-the-road excluding insurance) of all its five models by between 3% and 6% via cash rebates. This offer will be only until June 14, after which the new prices throughout the tax reduction period will be incorporated.

“Despite the tax reduction only becoming effective 15 June 2020, Perodua will offer cash rebates between 3% and 6% for the purchase of our vehicles beginning today [Wednesday, June 10],” Perodua President & Chief Executive Officer, Dato’ Zainal Abidin Ahmad said.

“We want everyone to take this opportunity to own a Perodua without worrying about being left out. Please visit any Perodua sales outlet and speak to our authorised sales advisors for the total cash rebate amounts and the full price list that will be effective June 15,” he added.

Perodua Axia
Cash rebates to lower purchase cost of the popular Axia.

“Perodua is in full support of the government’s move to fully exempt sales tax for the purchase of CKD cars until the end of the year to shore up the domestic economy,” said Dato’ Zainal. “As Malaysia’s biggest carmaker by volume, we reiterate our commitment to the government to contribute wherever and whenever we can to ensure the industry can get through this difficult time.”

“The Malaysian public are understandably spending more cautiously due to COVID-19 and the Movement Control Order, although personal vehicles are still very much needed in these trying times,” he said. “This move to fully exempt CKD cars from sales tax is a confidence boost for the automotive industry – not just for car buyers but the entire ecosystem of manufacturers, suppliers and dealers. Along with low financing rates at this difficult time, we are cautiously optimistic that this will spur new car sales.”

With the industry shutdown for the very long period during the MCO, Perodua sold 52,920 vehicles in the first five months of this year, giving it a 41% market share against an estimated year-to-date total industry volume of 129,401 units.
