While some car manufacturers have commissioned specialist companies to make miniature cars for their little clientele (hopefully to become customers when they are older), Nissan once specially developed a model called the Datsun Baby for a children’s park near Tokyo.

The year was 1965 and the carmaker produced 100 units specifically for use in the park known as Kodomo no Kuni. Aside from the donation of the cars, Nissan also provided training materials for automobile traffic education supervised the design of its children’s automobile driving course.

Kodomo no Kuni had been established to commemorate the marriage between then-Crown Prince Akihito Shinno Denka and Crown Princess Michiko. It opened on National Children’s Day on May 5, 1965 to help educate and mold the next generation of children in a fun, recreational setting. The presentation of the children’s cars was a result of Nissan’s strong support for the park’s purpose and its mission.

Educating children about traffic conditions
The concept behind Nissan’s involvement was to use the Datsun Baby to educate children about real-life traffic conditions and safe motoring. This was especially imported during that time as motorisation was starting in Japan and more cars would be on the roads.

The car was based on the Cony Guppy, a 200 cc 2-passenger utility truck from Aichi Machine Industry Company Ltd. The bodywork was specially redesigned to be more sporty by Nissan to allow children to be able to sample a full-scale, fully-structured vehicle unlike any other of that time. It had a 4-wheel independent suspension system with double wishbones up front, and a spring-actuated self-turning feature on the steering wheel.

The automatic transmission with a torque converter was made by Okamura Corporation which had introduced Japan’s first domestic torque converter. For safety, there was a speed limiter that prevented the Baby from going faster than 30 km/h and the headlamps complied with the traffic regulations of that time.

Over 45 years after Nissan’s initiative in Japan, the Tan Chong Group is also helping little ones to learn good habits as road-users. As a partner with LEGOLAND Malaysia, it provides a Nissan ‘driving school’ which was started in 2012.

Michelin has joined Petron in its effort to communicate and impart road safety advocacy in universities around Malaysia. The objective of the ROAD SAFETY PROGRAM for Michelin is to educate and create awareness amongst the younger generation, as tyres are the first line of defence on the road, it is very important to ensure that these tyres are in good condition for better safety on the road. Other partners for this program include Road Transport Department (JPJ), Road Safety Department Malaysia (JKJR) and other private companies.

Michelin and Petron together with other partners have successfully completed the ROAD SAFETY PROGRAM in Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP), Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin Terengganu (UNISZA) and Universiti Selangor (UNISEL). The program will continue at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UITM) Seremban, Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) Selangor and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Skudai Johor from October through December.

The Driving Skills for Life (DSFL) programme by Ford, which it has organised in Asia for the past 10 years, is meant to educate drivers of the importance of road safety. This year, organised in conjunction with local distributor of Ford vehicles, Sime Darby Auto Connexion (SDAC), saw over 140 Malaysian drivers taking part to better understand how to deal with different types of situations whiel driving.

According to the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS), 7,152 people were killed out of the 521,466 road accidents that were reported last year. And as such, the automaker and its local distributor believe programmes such as this will help drivers be more vigilant while on the road which would in turn, reduce the number of road accidents reported each year.

Those who attended this year’s DSFL included members of the CitiCLub by CitiBank, employees of Sime Darby Berhad, fans of Ford Malaysia’s social media channel, as well as members of the general public. The six half-day training session workshop was conducted by a panel of safety experts and was held at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS).

“Driving Skills for Life is designed to equip drivers with the skills they need to be better and safer on the road. Road safety is a very serious issue and we feel it is our responsibility to help reinforce this message among Malaysian motorists,” said Syed Ahmad Muzri Syed Faiz, Managing Director, Sime Darby Auto Connexion.

During the workshop, attendees were made aware of the risks that drivers face while on the road, dealing with unexpected situations, the peril of distracted driving such as the use of mobile phones while behind the wheel, hands-on driver training that covers hazard recognition, vehicle handling, speed/space management, and distraction awareness.

DSFL is free-of-charge and is part of Ford’s global corporate social responsibility programme. Besides Malaysia, the automaker conducts this awareness programme in a number of countries such as China, India, Myanmar, Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.
