It’s been a busy month for Lexus on both sides of the Pacific Ocean. At the 2019 Los Angeles Auto Show, the brand unveiled the LC500 Convertible and today, at the Guangzhou International Automobile Exhibition in China, it is presenting its first battery electric vehicle (BEV), the UX 300e. The new model is scheduled to go on sale in the Chinese and European markets next year, and in Japan early in 2021.

Electrified vehicles are not new to Lexus though as the company offered a hybrid variant of the RX400 in 2005. It is now making a bigger leap in electrification in tandem with the Toyota Group’s direction with its global electrification strategy called ‘Lexus Electrified’.

The technology of Lexus Electrified
In particular, the technology of Lexus Electrified enables integrated control of powertrain, steering, suspension, and brakes, realizing the ultimate potential of the motor control technology cultivated in hybrid vehicles. With this technology, there can be control of the driving force to provide ideal vehicle posture according to each driving situation. The high-performance level of the GA-C platform is enhanced with additional braces and optimization of the shock absorbers’ damping force to match the dynamic changes of electrification.

While BEVs are naturally quiet, the UX 300e adds insulation beyond just the battery and suppresses outside noises such as wind or pebbles which would be otherwise noticeable in the absence of an engine and transmission. It is said to have one of the quietest cabins in its class, as befits the sound management heritage of the Lexus DNA.

At the same time, the engineers also focused on sound while driving to provide a natural feeling. Active Sound Control (ASC) transmits natural ambient sounds to allow for understanding of driving conditions, while providing a natural ambience for the cabin’s occupants.

Connected to the max
The Lexus engineering team also adopted the latest connectivity technology to maximize everyday usability and the functionality with smartphones. By linking to a smartphone using a dedicated app, drivers can check the battery state of charge and driving range. Charging controls are also included such as timer function to inform the owner when the vehicle will be fully charged or to schedule the charging according to when the vehicle is expected to be driven next. The app also allows the owner to remotely control various convenience functions such as the air-conditioner, seat heaters, and window defrosters.

Long before the appearance of the small SUVs that are so popular today, Ford was selling a 4×4 vehicle that would have been called a compact SUV had the term been in use then. It was known as the Bronco and sold during the 1960s and 1970s as a rival to the Jeep. The model line went through a few generations until the mid-1990s when its engineering was dated compared to the new generation of SUVs coming into the market.

The Bronco name is still fondly remembered by many (in America) and Ford has said that it is working on bringing back the model in 2020. Although there were rumours it would be a rebadged Everest, Ford has said that it will not be done that way and will have a new design using the platform of the current T6 Ranger (previous generations of the Bronco sat on the F-Series chassis).

Celebrating a historic win 50 years ago
While we’re waiting for the new Bronco to be unveiled (possibly in Detroit in January?), the Bronco R race prototype shows some clues as to what it will look like. It debuts in the desert to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Rod Hall’s historic Baja 1000 win, an overall victory in a 4×4 that’s never been duplicated in 50 years. As a test, the Bronco R will head back to the Baja Peninsula later this month to take on the near 1,600-km gruelling off-road course and challenge the production Bronco’s powertrain and architecture.

Ford’s Bronco R race prototype debuts in the desert to celebrate the 50th anniversary of a historic Baja 1000 win, an overall victory in a 4×4 that’s never been duplicated in 50 years.

And as a tease, the Bronco R – developed by Ford Performance in collaboration with builder Geiser Bros Design and Development and Baja 1000 Trophy Truck champion Cameron Steele – drops heritage-inspired design and proportion hints of what enthusiasts can expect to see when the future Bronco makes its world premiere.

Iconic Bronco design
Hidden behind an innocuous security door in a Ford studio basement, a small team led by Paul Wraith, Bronco chief designer, worked since July to make the race prototype unmistakably Bronco at first sight. The team worked in secret to create a one-off build that hints at the all-new Bronco to come, while paying homage to the first-generation styling and proportions.

The team focused on creating a race-ready look with an overall heritage-inspired design language. With its compressed body height and long-travel suspension, the Bronco R features an ultra-wide stance, while a variety of aero components reinforce its performance intent.

The prototype’s lightweight composite body includes a clamshell bonnet and roof, as well as clean body panels that are reminiscent of the first-generation Bronco. A cut-roof design allows rear seat passengers to use a second-row hatch for access.

Race-focussed exterior
The exterior incorporates 15 LED lightbars, including a grille sequence framing the new BRONCO brand lettering boldly. To underscore that this is a one-of-a-kind racing prototype, the ‘R’ is given a sharp graphic treatment. Washers inscribed with the Bronco name are visible at various points around the exterior and secure the composite skin to the roll cage beneath it.

A unique race-focused interior features lightweight off-road racing shells from Recaro for all three seating positions. Simple surfaces of the instrument panel nod to the first-generation, and the integration of a MoTeC data acquisition system enables real-time monitoring and measurement of the prototype’s performance attributes.

The Bronco R race prototype is designed with the production model’s body-on-frame architecture to test its capability and durability. It is modified from the Ranger’s chassis which will be the base for the production model. Beefed up for Baja, it has independent front suspension with 355 mm of travel and a production-based 5-link rear suspension with almost 500 mm of travel, plus custom Fox shocks, 17-inch beadlock-capable aluminim wheels and 37-inch BFGoodrich tyres.

Ford Ranger
The production Bronco will use the same platform as the current global Ranger pick-up available from Sime Darby Auto ConneXion.

Ford Bronco R race prototype

“Like the original Bronco, we kept Bronco R’s design authentic and simple, with a roll cage on a production-style frame, and a 5-piece lightweight body on top,” said Brian Novak, Ford Performance off-road racing supervisor. “For the endurance needs of Baja’s 1,600 gruelling kms, we built in a limited number of race-focused parts. But even the twin turbos of the EcoBoost engine are representative of what the production Bronco will offer.”

The new Bronco is unlikely to be sold in Malaysia but if you are interested in the Ranger, which has the same rugged platform, visit a Sime Darby Auto ConneXion showroom for a test-drive.

In recent times, Hyundai has been using an evolving design language that maintained an overall familiarity. It’s referred to as ‘Sensuous Sportiness’ and has been applied globally. The design language is still evolving and is shown in the seventh model in a series of Hyundai Design Centre concepts – the Vision T Plug-in Hybrid SUV Concept.

The SUV concept, likely to be a preview of the next generation of the Tucson (the ‘T’ may be the clue), has a matte-green exterior finish and is powered by a plug-in hybrid powertrain indicating its eco-lifestyle focus and inherent balance with the environment in which it is driven.

Two derivative sub-themes
Two derivative sub-themes of the dynamism fundamental design concept are ‘Parametric Fantasy’ and ‘Transcendent Connectivity’. In these sub-themes, all parametric surfaces are connected from the body to either light or trim features. It features seamless connectivity free from distinct design boundaries.

Ambient light reflects off these concave and convex lines creating an extreme sense of tension. Charisma is added with the evolution of a Hidden Signature Lamp derived from the Le Fil Rouge and Grandeur Face Lift.

Parametric Air Shutter Grille Design
At higher speeds, the Parametric Air Shutter is an original developmental feature that actively adjusts both aerodynamics and design appearance. When stationary, the grille is closed and static. Once in motion, each individual cell of the grille design continues to move in a prescribed sequence, creating a truly dynamic forward stance. This dynamic character includes the functional effect of controlling airflow to the powertrain, optimizing aerodynamics and fuel efficiency.

The 4.6-metre long Vision T’s side profile conveys a continual sense of speed and forward motion. The long bonnet and level roofline coupled with a long wheelbase and short overhangs reflect a ready-for-anything dynamic character. In contrast to prevailing compact SUV designs, the Vision T uses crisp geometric angles and edges to create a striking contrast between a sleek silhouette and masculine wedge lines.

2019 Hyundai Vision T Concept

The side window design is ultra-clean and seamless, with a futuristic frameless daylight opening and a satin chrome garnish. The oversize satin chrome alloy wheels feature ample voided area with dark orange brake calipers visible within the split-5-spoke wheel design. The beveled sides of the wheel spokes feature a matte-gray finish descending into the voided areas, highlighting the brilliance of the satin chrome spoke faces.

From above, a special glass pattern is embossed within the roof glass structure. These dynamic effects carry into the Hyundai logo design. The H design is dark chrome; when illuminated it is enhanced with a bright green and deep red hue for sharper dimensionality.

2019 Hyundai Vision T Concept

Integrated Hidden Signature Headlamp
When the powertrain is started, the dark-chrome matte hue of the integrated hidden signature headlamp system features a half-mirror system that has a chromium appearance which transforms into functional lighting on demand. The designers have elevated the appeal of luminous parametric design through hidden DRLs, while the hidden signature lamp represents the next generation of this Hyundai design innovation.

2019 Hyundai Vision T Concept

The sequenced lighting theme carries through to the rear of the vehicle, demonstrated when the powertrain is shut down and the rear tail lamps and Hyundai logo follow a prescribed light extinguishing sequence, with the Hyundai logo as the last of the rear lighting signature to cease illumination.

2019 Hyundai Vision T Concept

The charging port for the battery pack is located on the passenger side rear quarter panel and features a sliding cover. When charging, ‘Blue Drive’ is illuminated, indicating the system is actively charging. The battery state of charge is also visually indicated externally in a metered, circular light cluster, creating a complete circle appearance when fully charged.

Aston Martin officially joins the SUV bandwagon today with the all-new DBX – the first SUV model in its 106-year history. It’s the culmination of a development programme that began when Dr. Andy Palmer joined Aston Martin Lagonda from Nissan as President & Group CEO in 2014 and made a SUV project one of the company’s priorities.

When you think back 5 years ago, there were no true benchmarks for the Aston Martin SUV to observe. It was a segment previously unexplored and bringing both the versatility and indulgence expected of a luxury SUV with sportscar levels was a bold new challenge for the company.

Aston Martin DBX

“DBX also marks a key moment in the delivery of the third and final phase of our Second Century Plan, not only representing the promised expansion of our portfolio but also signalling the start of production at Aston Martin’s second manufacturing plant,” said Dr. Palmer. “We have both delivered this model through our expertise, but also by garnering invaluable experience and knowledge from external counsel, including our Female Advisory Board. This is a real landmark for this great British brand, and I promise that DBX will reward all who experience it in their everyday lives.”

“DBX is a car that will give many people their first experience of Aston Martin ownership.
As such, it needed to be true to the core values established in our sportscars,
while also providing the lifestyle versatility expected of a luxury SUV.”

Dr. Andy Palmer,  Aston Martin Lagonda President & Group CEO

All-new platform, sportscar structure
The foundation of the DBX is a new dedicated SUV platform, something rarely seen across the sector. By taking such an approach, all departments within Aston Martin could innovate and push the boundaries of what British design and engineering can create, resulting in a truly remarkable product that has ‘British-ness’.

Utilising bonded aluminium, a construction method Aston Martin has refined through the development of its sportscars, the body structure is both very light and incredibly stiff, with an overall kerb weight of 2,245 kgs. The exceptional stiffness inherent in the design of the new platform has also enabled the DBX to achieve exceptional dynamics both on and off-road.

Aston Martin DBX

Adaptive triple volume air suspension has been combined with the latest 48V electric anti-roll control system (eARC) and electronic adaptive dampers to provide the new SUV with a huge breadth of ability. With its capacity to raise the ride height by 45 mm or lower it by 50 mm, the air suspension gives the capability to tackle a wide range of terrain.

The eARC can limit the SUV’s body roll for handling that is much more akin to that of a sportscar than an SUV. This sophisticated system of adaptive air suspension, dampers and eARC allows for maximum ride comfort when transporting up to 5 occupants and their luggage, while maintaining a highly responsive and engaging dynamic capability.

Aston Martin DBX

Powered by a new version of the 550 ps/770 Nm 4-litre, twin-turbocharged V8 engine also used in DB11 and Vantage, the DBX has a sound character that is unquestionably Aston Martin. The active exhaust system ensures this is a luxury SUV that can sound refined one moment and exhilarating the next. But the soundtrack is not everything and to enhance fuel economy, the engine has cylinder deactivation. Yet it can also propel the DBX from 0 to 100 km/h in a claimed 4.5 seconds with a top speed of 290 km/h.

Transmitting this power and torque to the ground is a 9-speed torque convertor automatic gearbox, allied to an all-wheel drive system with active differentials. The drivetrain features an active central differential and an electronic rear limited slip differential (eDiff). This allows the torque to be moved precisely both fore and aft in the vehicle and also across the rear axle.

Aston Martin DBX

First 5-seater Aston Martin
Aston Martin’s first ever full-size 5-seat model has been designed to be extremely adaptable to a wide variety of lifestyle needs and owners. It can accommodate the world’s 99th percentile male and 5th percentile female, which covers a broad range of heights. The use of sportscar seat packaging in the front not only provides the driver with exceptional support and long-distance driving comfort, but also provides knee and footwell clearance for those sitting behind.

Aston Martin DBX

Small touches throughout, including separate central armrests, glovebox design and the ergonomic positioning of the car’s key control systems, have been guided carefully by the input of the brand’s Female Advisory Board, dealership feedback and a variety of private focus groups held worldwide. Not limited to this area, the guidance provided has been key to the success of DBX’s overall design.

With 632 litres of boot space and 40:20:40 split folding rear seats, the DBX possesses all the flexible load capacity expected of an SUV with class-leading interior space. The load space offers a practical and cleanly designed space. A narrow load sill and broad aperture maximises the practicality for a variety of luggage, such as suitcases, golf bags and ski equipment.

Aston Martin DBX

An industry first, both the headlining and electric roof blind are available in a luxurious Alcantara finish, providing a harmonious design, light obscuration and solar attenuation without compromising headroom. Throughout the cabin, DBX maintains an authenticity of materials, with judicious use of metal, glass and wood throughout the cabin.

Another design highlight includes the elegantly crafted bridged centre console allowing for both flexible storage below and a beautiful, architectural centrepiece. This feature keeps valuables close to hand while not occupying the passenger seat and away from dirt on the car’s floor mats. As part of ‘Q by Aston Martin’ – Aston Martin’s personalisation service – optional features of this centre console can be machined from a solid piece of wood, such as Walnut, for added tactility.

Aston Martin DBX

Framed by these materials is an abundance of technology. A 10.25-inch TFT screen sits elegantly flush in the centre console, while a huge 12.3-inch TFT screen provides a wealth of information to the driver. Apple CarPlay comes as standard (will DBX owners used only iPhones?), as does a 360-degree camera system and ambient lighting that offers 64 different colours in two zones.

Sportscar style with SUV functionality
The DBX’s exterior combines the elegance of Aston Martin’s sportscars with the functional style of SUVs. However, the big story is about the aerodynamics which were an important consideration within the design process.

Aston Martin DBX

At the car’s front, the daytime running lights (DRLs) have an integrated aerodynamic duct, which channels air through the front wheel arches and along the side, helping to reduce both drag and lift while also cooling the brakes. Air flows cleanly over the roof, through the rear wing, over the rear window and on to the rear flip. This unique approach and design detail allows the rear screen to self-clear on the move. Aerodynamic design has also played a key part in passenger comfort because as one of only a few companies using computational aeroacoustics technology, Aston Martin’s engineers have been able to keep cabin noise to a minimum at speed.

Aston Martin DBX

Further adding to the desirability of DBX, the first 500 owners of this landmark model will benefit from an exclusive ‘1913 Package’. Fitted with a unique fender badge, sill plaques and an inspection plaque detailing its limited build-run; each of these first examples will be personally endorsed and inspected by Dr. Palmer. In addition, each customer will also receive a unique build-book signed by both Aston Martin’s CEO & Chief Creative Officer Marek Reichman and an invitation to a regionally hosted Waldorf Astoria celebration cocktail party, hosted by a member of the Aston Martin Lagonda executive team.

As for the Malaysian market, Aston Martin Kuala Lumpur is ready to accept bookings. The DBX will be priced from RM798,000.00 (excluding duties). For more information or to find out where to send your deposit cheque, call 03 2163 1196.

Ford Mustang Mach-E logo

Mustang. Mention of the name brings to mind a musclecar, a legendary sportscar that has tyres smoking and subjects your body to high g-forces. An icon that Steve McQueen used to rocket through the streets of San Francisco in ‘Bullitt’ in 1968. Times may have changed since the Mustang was born in 1965 but it has always remained the epitome of the American sportscar – and it is today also the bestselling sports coupe in the world.

As a musclecar, the Mustang has always had big and powerful engines although, in response to the fuel crisis era, the second and third generations had a 2.3-litre 4-cylinder engine and for the current generation, a 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine. Nevertheless, big displacement was synonymous with a Mustang.

2020 Ford Mustang Mach-E

So the idea of a new Mustang which did not require petrol and instead ran on electricity; a crossover SUV design instead of a sleek coupe style; and two more doors must have had Ford’s engineers wondering what top management was thinking (or drinking). Yes, SUVs are a growing segment and manufacturers need to offer more environment-friendly vehicles but to change an iconic model so radically?

But the engineers took up the challenge and today, in Los Angeles, Ford Motor Company presented the first ever all-electric Mustang, called the Mach-E (pronounced ‘mark’-E). Bill Ford, the company’s Executive Chairman, says that the Mustang Mach-E will still give ‘the freedom, progress and fast performance it has been known for – with a touch of rebellion too’. In fact, he insisted that if it was to be a member of the Mustang family, those attributes were a must.

2020 Ford Mustang Mach-E

For a new generation of Mustang owners
“At the first-ever Detroit auto show, Henry Ford said he was working on something that would strike like forked lightning,” said the great-grandson of the man who founded the company. “That was the Model T. Today, the Ford Motor Company is proud to unveil a car that strikes like forked lightning all over again. The all-new, all-electric Mustang Mach-E. It’s fast. It’s fun. It’s freedom. For a new generation of Mustang owners.”

Developed in a century-old brick building a few blocks away from Henry Ford’s first factory in Detroit, Ford brought the Mustang Mach-E to life through a development process concentrated entirely on customer needs and desires. “People want a car that’s thrilling to drive, that looks gorgeous and that can easily adapt to their lifestyle – and the Mustang Mach-E delivers all of this in unmatched style,” said Hau Thai-Tang, Ford’s Chief Product Development and Purchasing Officer.“ 51-year old Thai-Tang, of Vietnamese descent, has served as the chief engineer for the Mustang program, leading the design, development, and launch of the 2005 model year Mustang.

2020 Ford Mustang Mach-E

When it arrives in showrooms in late 2020, the Mustang Mach-E will be available with standard and extended-range battery options with either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive powered by permanent magnet motors. Equipped with an extended-range battery and rear-wheel drive, the Mach-E has a targeted EPA-estimated range of at least 480 kms.

In extended-range all-wheel-drive configurations, the Mach-E is expected to produce 332 bhp/565 Nm of torque – with the standard all-wheel-drive variation having claimed times to 60 mph (96 km/h) quicker than the base Porsche Macan. Ford will also offer two special GT performance versions which can deliver up to 459 bhp and 830 Nm of torque.

2020 Ford Mustang Mach-E

In addition to blistering acceleration, the Mustang Mach-E will be available with Brembo’s all-new performance Flexira aluminium calipers, which maintain the functionality of a fixed caliper while being designed with the dimensions of a floating caliper. The GT Performance Edition is equipped with a MagneRide damping system, adaptive suspension technology that lets drivers hug the road while delivering an exciting, comfortable ride.

Hassle-free charging solutions
The Mustang Mach-E will be available with two battery pack options – standard-range (75.7 kWh lithium-ion battery) and extended-range (98.8 kWh battery). Designed for ease of manufacturing, the battery pack is located on the floor between the vehicle’s two axles – and tested at temperatures as extreme as -40 degrees F. The batteries are secured inside a waterproof battery case surrounded by crash-absorption protection. They are liquid-cooled to optimize performance in extreme weather and to improve charging times.

2020 Ford Mustang Mach-E

As electric vehicle owners have been found to do 80% of their charging at home, Ford offers a Ford Connected Charging station that can add an estimated average range of 50 kms per charging hour on a 240V outlet, based on extended-range, rear-wheel-drive configuration. The Ford mobile charger, included with the vehicle, can add an estimated average range of 35 kms per charging hour on a 240V outlet, the same used for a conventional oven.

The connected navigation system will provide the latest list of public charging locations during trips and prompt owners to charge at the most convenient points on each drive – all to help ensure they don’t have to be anxious about how much range they have. The FordPass Charging Network – the largest public charging network in the USA – has more than 12,500 charging stations (and more than 35,000 charge plugs) and growing, including DC fast chargers.

2020 Ford Mustang Mach-E

New meaning to ‘electrifying’
The Mustang Mach-E delivers three unique drive experiences – Whisper, Engage and Unbridled – with each offering finely tuned driving dynamics packaged with a distinct sensory experience. Features include custom-designed vehicle responsiveness such as sportier steering controls, ambient lighting, sounds tuned for an authentic all-electric experience, and dynamic cluster animations that are tied to driving behaviour.

On take-off, a new all-wheel drive system will be available that can apply torque independently to the front and rear axles to deliver impressive acceleration and improved handling over the rear-wheel drive model. Ford tuned this system to provide excellent traction on the road, rigorously testing the vehicle in wet and snowy terrain to help control for slippery conditions.

Recognisable as a Mustang
The Mach-E is instantly recognizable as a Mustang, thanks to signature elements such as its long, powerful bonnet, rear haunch design, aggressive headlights and trademark tri-bar taillamps. Clever design and engineering delivers surprising rear seat roominess and ample cargo space.

Using Ford’s new all-electric architecture that places batteries inside the underbody, Ford engineers and designers were able to create a car that’s not only true to Mustang but also maximizes SUV space for passengers and cargo.

2020 Ford Mustang Mach-E

Along with its all-new propulsion system, the Mach-E holds another surprise under its bonnet – a drainable front storage unit. Providing 136 litres of storage space, the front storage compartment is large enough to comfortably store the equivalent of a carry-on luggage bag. And because it’s drainable, customers can easily pack it full of ice and keep their favourite drinks cold.

Inside the Mach-E
To truly take advantage of the extra space provided by electrification, Ford designers worked extensively with customers to understand how they would prefer to use the interior of their vehicles. Designed with SUV-size proportions to seat 5 adults comfortably, there’s certainly plenty of space for friends, kids and cargo. In addition to the exterior front storage area, the rear cargo space offers 821 litres of space. With the rear seats down, this volume can increase to almost 1,700 litres.

2020 Ford Mustang Mach-E

2020 Ford Mustang Mach-E

Everywhere inside, the Mach-E represents a fusion of sleek, modern design and smart functionality. Premium available Bang & Olufsen speakers are seamlessly integrated across the front, floating above the air vents like a sound bar. A floating flip-up armrest doubles as a place to store purses or bags.

Even the available panoramic fixed-glass roof has a secret – a special glass coating with infrared protection helps the interior stay cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. In addition, an inner layer between the glass helps protect against UV rays.

2020 Ford Mustang Mach-E

Finally, getting in and starting the vehicle is easy and effortless with Phone As A Key technology, which makes its debut in the Ford brand line-up in this latest Mustang. Using Bluetooth, the system can detect customers’ smartphones as they approach, unlocking the Mach-E and allowing them to start driving without getting their phones out of their pockets or using a key fob. A back-up code can be entered on the centre touchscreen to start and drive the vehicle in the event a phone battery dies.

New-generation SYNC system
Making its debut in the Mach-E is the next-generation SYNC communications and entertainment system, a sleek and modern interface that uses machine learning to quickly learn drivers’ preferences, and gets even better over time, thanks to advanced over-the-air updates. Its 15.5-inch screen and simple interface ditches complicated menus, making it easier to access features with touch, swipe and pinch controls that every smartphone owner will be comfortable using.

At the Geneva Motor Show in March 2016, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars presented Black Badge; a permanent Bespoke family of motorcars that defined the taste patterns of an emerging generation of super-luxury consumer. These are products for those who refuse to be defined by traditional codes of luxury and yet find reassurance in Rolls-Royce’s fluency in their bold aesthetic and uncompromising lifestyle requirements.

This highly successful alter ego is codified by the mathematical symbol that represents a potential infinity, which is placed discreetly within the motor car’s interior. This marking, known also as the lemniscate, was applied to Sir Malcolm Campbell’s record-breaking Rolls-Royce-powered Blue Bird K3 hydroplane, denoting that it belonged to an insurance class reserved for boats with unlimited and therefore infinite engine power. Rolls-Royce Motor Cars selected this hallmark for Black Badge to reflect its own unrelenting pursuit of power.

Rolls-Royce debuted its Black Badge family with the Wraith and Ghost in 2016, followed by the Dawn in 2017. Today, the family is completed with the addition of the Black Badge Cullinan: the darkest and most urban statement of Black Badge yet.

“Black Badge reflects the desires of a distinct group of Rolls-Royce clients: men and women who take risks, break rules and build success on their own terms.”
Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief Executive Officer, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars

2019 Rolls-Royce Black Badge Cullinan

The Cullinan Goes Black
The Cullinan is an ideal model for the Black Badge as it appeals to the younger, more adventurous clientele of Rolls-Royce. The Rolls-Royce of SUVs did much to reach a new group of clients looking for enriching experiences. Yet, within this group exists a subset of individuals who seek to subvert the motorcar’s domineering presence by permanently cloaking it in the night.

While clients can draw on the marque’s 44,000 ‘ready to wear’ paint options or commission an entirely individual Bespoke hue, it is anticipated that many will opt for Black Badge’s signature Black. Multiple layers of paint and lacquer are meticulously applied and hand-polished 10 times, representing the most comprehensive surface finish process ever applied to a solid paint colour. The depth and intensity of Black Badge Cullinan’s coachwork serves as the perfect canvas upon which to throw a contrasting hand-painted Coachline into stark relief.

On the prow of the car lies the defining expression of the Black Badge. The Spirit of Ecstasy mascot, which has taken many forms throughout the marque’s history, is presented in high gloss black chrome. For the first time, this finish extends onto its mounting plate, creating the darkest Black Badge yet.

2019 Rolls-Royce Black Badge Cullinan

This transformation pervades the other symbols of Black Badge. The ‘Double R’ badge on the front, flanks and aft invert to become silver-on-black, while chrome surfaces such as the front grille surround, side frame finishers, boot handle, boot trim, lower air inlet finisher and exhaust pipes are darkened. While they appear black, the vertical grille bars remain polished, reflecting the blackened surfaces that surround them to add a frisson of movement that hints at the car’s dynamic intent.

The overall effect artfully simplifies and enlarges the motor car’s exterior design graphics, emphasising its imposing proportions and confident stance. This is further dramatized by all-new 22-inch forged alloy wheels, reserved exclusively for the Black Badge Cullinan. Designed in the Black Badge house style, the gear-like graphic emphasises the model’s vast reserves of power while also recalling an infinitely occurring lemniscate.

The gloss black and polished design also creates the perfect stage for the marque’s first ever coloured brake caliper. The high gloss Red paint has been specifically developed to withstand the rigours of elevated temperatures generated by the motor car’s uprated braking system while still offering a perfectly smooth finish befitting of Rolls-Royce.

Superlative comfort, audacious interior design
Ordinarily, great efforts are expelled to distance occupants from a Rolls-Royce’s mechanical function. However, the marque’s Colour and Trim experts gently sensationalised the engineering substance of the Black Badge, seamlessly blending superlative comfort, bold aesthetics, advanced materials and precise, meticulous craftsmanship.

This ethos is perfectly embodied by the Black Badge Cullinan’s Technical Carbon veneer. In the spirit of Sir Henry Royce’s founding philosophy, “When it does not exist, design it”, a collaboration between the marque’s designers, engineers and craftspeople saw the creation of a new luxury material. Inspired by masterpieces of urban architecture, a naked-weave carbonfibre finish has been developed to create highly accurate repeating geometrical shapes that produce a powerful three-dimensional effect.

Each leaf of Technical Carbon is finished with six coats of lacquer before being left to cure for 72 hours then hand-polished to Rolls-Royce’s hallmark mirror finish. This process takes 21 days and is only deemed complete once every piece is inspected by a craftsperson to ensure complete reflective uniformity across each of the 23 pieces within the car.

Starlight Headliner has joined historical Rolls-Royce iconography such as the Spirit of Ecstasy, Pantheon Grille and ‘Double R’ monogram. Its presence in Black Badge Cullinan intensifies the cabin’s ambience by casting a low light over the lavish leather seats. Presented in fine Black leather, handwoven with 1,344 fibreoptic lights, it is a true reflection of the sky at night and incorporates eight brilliant white shooting stars that dart at random predominantly over the front occupants, subtly acknowledging the motor car’s owner-driver appeal.

A final touch completes the interior seating: the Infinity lemniscate motif is embroidered into the fold-down rear armrest as an elegant reminder of the power contained within. This simple but potent symbol is also incorporated in the illuminated treadplates and engraved on the clock face, itself framed by brushed and darkened steel case bearing the name ‘Cullinan’. Red-tipped clock hands and instrument display needles also serve as a discreet reminder of the motor car’s dynamic prowess.

The Architecture of Luxury’s dark side
The Black Badge is far more than an aesthetic treatment. In creating this class of motor car, it was of vital importance for Rolls-Royce to conceive a meticulously considered dynamic personality that perfectly harmonised with the motor car’s remarkable visual identity. Indeed, the exceptionally high expectations of the marque’s clients defined a rigorous testing protocol lasting more than 3 years to ensure that the Black Badge Cullinan would be relevant to their needs.

2019 Rolls-Royce Black Badge Cullinan

Key to the visceral thrill of Black Badge Cullinan is the Architecture of Luxury, Rolls-Royce’s proprietary all-aluminium architecture that debuted with Phantom. The sub-structure not only delivers extraordinary body stiffness but its flexibility and scalability allowed the SUV to be fitted with all-wheel drive and 4-wheel steering. These dynamic features have been comprehensively exploited and re-engineered for  the Black Badge while retaining the peerless quality of ride that has driven Rolls-Royce’s success.

The Architecture of Luxury has been engineered to meet size and weight requirements of different propulsion systems. When the driver presses the ‘Low’ button situated on the gear selection stalk, they unlock Black Badge Cullinan’s full suite of technologies. This is asserted by the proud amplification of the motor car’s 6.75-litre twin-turbocharged V12 through an entirely new exhaust system, announcing its arrival with a deep, authoritative basso profundo.

2019 Rolls-Royce Black Badge Cullinan

It was deemed unnecessary to make changes to the engine’s ample internal capacity, however the flexibility of the twin-turbo V12 has been exploited to generate an extra 29 ps, creating a total output of 600 ps. The sense of a single, infinite gear has also been sensationalised with the addition of a further 50 Nm of torque, bringing the total to a 900 Nm.

The Black Badge Cullinan gets a Bespoke transmission and throttle treatment that creates a sense of urgency without ever undermining its Rolls-Royce peerage. The drivetrain, ZF 8-speed gearbox and both front and rear steered axles work collaboratively to adjust the levels of engagement depending on throttle and steering inputs. Changes to suspension components and settings add to the suite of dynamic technologies that ensure an appropriate balance between dynamism and refinement. The result is an extremely well-mannered tourer at low speeds and a vivid driver’s device when pressed.

To bolster confidence when exploiting Cullinan’s alter ego, the braking bite point has been raised and pedal travel decreased. Redesigned brake disc ventilation also allows consistency in these changes while braking at elevated temperatures.

The Black Badge Cullinan is priced from RM1.8 million (excluding Malaysian taxes) and can be commissioned through Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Kuala Lumpur.

On the same historic day that two women made history with the first all-female space-walk, two women also set a record in the deserts of California to become back-to-back champions of America’s premier off-road rally – the 2019 Rebelle Rally. Their rallycar – a Bespoke Rolls-Royce Cullinan. It may be a surprise that anyone would want to put a Rolls-Royce through a rally but then again, the Cullinan is like no Rolls-Royce before and during development, prototypes travelled over some of the roughest terrain on the planet.

Back in the earlier years of the brand, Rolls-Royce cars did take part in rallies, a notable one being the Alpenfahrt (Alpine Rally) in 1913. It reinforced the status of the Silver Ghost as ‘the best car in the world’ when it completed the 23,700-km route over the rough mountain roads of the Alps. Some of those cars are still running today and their owners have re-enacted the challenging drive.

The winning duo – driver Emme Hall (right) and navigator Rebecca Donaghe

This year, the Cullinan didn’t travel such a great distance but ‘Team #200’ comprising driver Emme Hall and navigator Rebecca Donaghe were able to take top honours in the Crossover Class. It had been a gruelling 8-day challenge for 2,300 kms, the longest off-road rally in the USA. The Cullinan was driven across mountains, valleys, salt flats and treacherous desert sand dunes.

When Rolls-Royce Motor Cars engineered the Cullinan, they envisioned a ‘Effortless Everywhere’ experience and this test was just one more example of their accomplishment as well as demonstrations of the evolution of the Rolls-Royce brand and its daring clientele.

“By taking this epic experience in the Rebelle Rally and doing it in a way that is even more epic, was a complete honour and privilege,” said Rebecca and Emme. “The idea that we could do something that people may have thought was absolutely wild and come out on the top was a greater challenge and one we were excited to accept. The Cullinan became like a third teammate to us and will forever be in our hearts as a fierce competitor.”

Rallying the old-fashioned way…

Rolls-Royce Cullinan in 2019 Rebelle Rally

The Rebelle Rally, entering its fourth year, is the first all-female off-road navigational rally in the USA. The event has a unique challenge and scoring system where precise navigation and timing, not speed, is the ultimate goal. Participants exchange cellphones and GPS for ‘old-school navigation’ in a competition against the elements of time, distance, headings, and hidden checkpoints across 2,300 kms of terrain in Nevada and California.

Teams could only utilize the supplies they carried in their vehicles, requiring not only precise navigation and fearless driving but also meticulous planning. The Cullinan provided the Hall-Donaghe duo more than enough room and a luxurious ride through the adventure. The only issues: the rocks and some tracks in the mountains took their toll on their tyres, forcing the team to complete the final 2 days without either of their two original spares.

In 2019, mirroring the trend globally, SUV buyers in Malaysia continued to increase and comprised 20% of new vehicle buyers as compared with a mere 6% in 2015. Even though the average transaction price of SUVs in 2019 is 2.6 times higher than small cars, buyers are showing a preference to purchase SUVs, citing vehicle styling, performance, technology and safety features.

“As lifestyles evolve and become more digitally connected, it is no surprise customers expect their choice of vehicle to be in sync with their needs and personal image,” said E-Ling Cheah, Country Manager for Malaysia at J.D. Power. “SUVs with their higher hip point provide a commanding seating position, which provides better visibility and perception of safety. Newly launched contemporary-style SUVs are also equipped with advanced connectivity and safety features. Furthermore, manufacturers have introduced more affordable SUVs, bringing them within reach of more buyers.”

SUV

Moving up the value ladder
Thus new vehicle buyers in Malaysia are increasingly moving up the value ladder, with more vehicle buyers showing interest in SUVs, according to the J.D. Power 2019 Malaysia Sales Satisfaction Index (Mass Market) Study released today.

Customers who purchased an SUV have higher satisfaction than small car buyers (806 vs. 794 points, on a 1,000-point scale). Overall sales satisfaction in the mass market segment is 800, an increase of 16 points from 2018. A look at the 5-year growth trajectory for SUVs shows that the proportion of small car and MPV/van buyers have both dropped (each by 5 percentage points). For small car buyers, good fuel efficiency and low monthly instalments cumulatively make up 48% of the main reasons for purchase.

The study, in its 17th year for the Malaysian market, also found the proportion of replacement vehicle buyers is increasing (26% vs. 21% in 2018) and that of additional vehicle buyers decreasing (51% vs. 56% in 2018). On a related note, vehicle trade-ins—ever important to dealer profitability—are on the rise (21% vs. 17% in 2018). However, more customers are unhappy with the trade-in price received, stating it to be below expectations (34% vs. 28% in 2018).

The study also included a Net Promoter Score (NPS) which measures new vehicle owners’ likelihood to recommend their vehicle brand on a 0-10 point scale.

Customer lounge
Upgraded facilities contribute to a more satisfying ownership experience for customers.

Additional key findings of the 2019 study:
♦ Clear communications on vehicle price: Customers who say they paid more than expected for their new vehicle have lower satisfaction than those who found the price to be in line with expectations (751 vs. 810, respectively). This underlines the need for clear communications to avoid unwelcome surprises during the sales journey.

♦ Upgraded facilities get a thumbs-up: More dealership facilities are equipped with amenities to enhance customer comfort for a better sales experience. Improvements are seen in features ranging from displays of vehicle accessories (48% vs. 43% in 2018) to something as essential as comfortable seating space (84% vs. 77% in 2018).

♦ Test drives boost satisfaction: While only 6% of buyers were told that a test drive vehicle was not available, this is essential for dealerships. Buyers who experience this scenario typically have a lower satisfaction (-94 points) than those who take test drives at the dealership of purchase.

Toyota showroom

For this year’s study, Toyota ranked highest in overall sales satisfaction with a score of 835. In second position was Mitsubishi (831) while Nissan was third (810). The study involved 2,045 new vehicle owners who purchased their vehicle between July 2018 and July 2019, and was conducted from January through September 2019. The owners were selected independently and not recommended by any car company and were also assessed for suitability for the study.

If owning the latest Mercedes-Benz G-Class is still not enough to ‘make a statement’, BRABUS ADVENTURE has a PowerXtra performance upgrade that not only enhances the macho looks but also increases its off-road capabilities to make a stronger staement.

For the owners of the new G-Class turbodiesel version G 350 d, BRABUS has a new performance upgrade that pushes output to 326 bhp/660 Nm. The power unit engineers developed the module for the straight-six turbodiesel engine with common-rail direct injection. The plug-and-play auxiliary control unit is adapted to the CAN bus of the G-Class.

The claimed driving performance is certainly impressive for a diesel-powered off-roader weighing about 2.5 metric tons: from rest, it can reach 100 km/h in 7.2 seconds and then go on to a top speed of 202 km/h.

An all-stainless BRABUS sport exhaust system is of course also available for the G 350 d. It features the unmistakable distinctive mark of BRABUS – two chrome tailpipes in the unusual side-pipe design on each side of the vehicle.

The off-road capabilities of a vehicle depend not only on the powertrain and tyres but also and especially the ground clearance when the terrain gets rougher. That is why the BRABUS suspension engineers developed special height-adjustable BRABUS ADVENTURE sport springs for the electronically-controlled, height-adjustable G-Class suspension. They allow raising the vehicle by up to another 40 mm.

In order to optimize the off-road capabilities further, the fender flares of the BRABUS WIDESTAR widebody tower over 20-inch Monoblock R wheels with maximum-traction off-road 285/55R20 tyres. The pivoted spare wheel carrier with carbonfibre cover holds a fifth wheel of the same specification for emergencies.

Other options that make the G-Model also fit for expeditions are the winch at the front and the wind deflector above the windshield, which with its 4 LED auxiliary headlamps improves illumination of the terrain in the dark. Further useful features are a large, robust luggage rack that spans the entire roof and a ladder at the rear that facilitates loading and unloading.

BRABUS refinement inside
The interior can be refined with exclusive BRABUS fine leather Mastik leather/Alcantara appointments in any conceivable colour and a wide variety of designs. The pictures show one example for customers with the centre sections of the seats and door panels given an arrowhead pattern quilting applied with pinpoint precision.

To create an attractive contrast to the black leather, white piping and decorative seams were incorporated in various places. Tailor-made aluminium components such as pedals, door-lock pins and ergonomically-shaped paddle shifters on the steering wheel are among the options available.

With its long experience and 40-year track record, BRABUS is confident of all the upgrading work and components installed and offers customers a 3-year/100,000-km Tuning Warranty (with terms and conditions applicable).
