Walaupun pencapaian Tesla melebihi jangkaan pasaran, ia masih gagal menyaingi BYD buat empat suku berturut-turut.

Chinese automaker BYD has widened its lead over Tesla in global pure electric vehicle (EV) sales, firmly establishing itself as the world’s top EV manufacturer through the third quarter of 2025.

According to data compiled by automotive analyst “Tongkuai Shuchang,” BYD recorded cumulative pure electric vehicle sales of 1.61 million units between January and September 2025. In comparison, Tesla delivered 1.22 million units over the same period, giving BYD a commanding lead of around 388,000 vehicles.

In the third quarter alone, BYD delivered 582,500 pure electric vehicles worldwide. Although this marked a slight 4% decline compared to the previous quarter, the numbers still reflected an impressive year-on-year growth of 31.4%. Tesla, meanwhile, reported deliveries of 497,100 units in Q3, achieving a 29.4% increase quarter-on-quarter and 7.4% growth year-on-year. Despite surpassing market expectations, Tesla remains behind BYD for the fourth consecutive quarter.

BYD first overtook Tesla in Q4 2024, a milestone that signalled a shift in the global EV landscape. Since then, the Chinese brand has not only retained its top spot but has continued to expand its margin, driven by its broad product lineup, aggressive pricing, and strong domestic and overseas demand.

A federal jury in Miami has ruled that Tesla shares responsibility for a fatal 2019 crash involving its Autopilot system, ordering the electric vehicle manufacturer to pay $243 million (around RM1.1 billion) in punitive and compensatory damages. The verdict follows a two-week trial examining the role of Tesla’s self-driving technology in the death of 22-year-old Naibel Benavides Leon.

The case revolved around a collision in which a Tesla Model S, driven by George McGee and equipped with Autopilot, ran through a T-shaped intersection, striking Leon and her boyfriend, Dillon Angulo. Leon died at the scene, while Angulo suffered severe, life-altering injuries. At the time of the crash, McGee had reportedly dropped his phone and lost control of the vehicle. Although the driver admitted fault, the jury concluded that Tesla’s software also played a significant role in the incident.

The plaintiffs were awarded $200 million in punitive damages and approximately $43 million in compensatory damages. The jury’s decision indicates that Tesla’s technology did not perform as it should have, failing to prevent the crash despite data suggesting it recognised the impending danger.

The latest sales figures for the month of May are out and we can now talk about the most and least popular EV models in Malaysia for that month.

Though the top 10 are not surprising, the bottom three are what caught our attention.

The fact that the Leapmotor C10 is right at the bottom with only 13 cars registered comes as no real surprise.

Of all the Chinese brands in Malaysia, Leapmotor is probably the least aggressive when it comes to marketing and the fact that the company is still yet to fix the key card access feature means that more potential buyers will be attracted to other brands that seem to have their products better sorted.

Leapmotor can continue to harp on the ‘Maserati-tuned-handling’ and we admit that it does handle well, but the fact of the matter is, most buyers won’t care about that and will mostly focus on what the car has to offer in terms of features, battery and range. And that key card system is simply put, annoying and needs an urgent fix.

We hear the team is working on it and can’t wait to see what they come up with.

Will the Leapmotor C10 finally be a force to be reckoned with? If they manage to include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, then sure it will be considering they just dropped the price of the car to one that is more competitive.

However, the second and third least registered cars for the month of May is what caught our attention. BMW only managed to register 13 iX models and 14 BMW i4’s.

That is quite surprising because there was a time when the iX was really popular if not the most popular premium EV in Malaysia. Are people getting tired of the iX and looking elsewhere? It surely seems like it.

The i4 is another surprise. For its price point, features and range, it should be doing better. But, the car is small with little to no space around the back seats, this limits the type of people who will be attracted to the i4.

Have the mighty really fallen? We don’t think so because 72 units of the BMW iX2 were registered making it the 12th most popular model while 39 units of the BMW i5 (15th place) were registered and 37 units of the BMW iX1 (17th place) found new owners.

BMW’s sub-brand Mini sold 30 units of the JCW EV (18th spot) and the Aceman found 26 homes and captured the 21st spot in the 30 most popular EV’s in Malaysia.

We just have to say that despite its age and global slowdown in demand for its models, the fact that Porsche Malaysia were still able to shift 39 units of the Taycan is commendable.

And the Macan EV is in the list as well with 29 units sold but we just can’t help but wonder what is happening to Mercedes-Benz? The company only sold 23 units of the EQE and it is the only Mercedes model in the list.

So which were the most popular? It comes as no surprise that the Tesla Model Y took top spot as the Juniper model was just recently launched with 985 units registered.

The Juniper stopped the Proton e.MAS 7 run as the most popular EV in Malaysia which was on a charge since January. The e.MAS 7 now sits in second spot.

The BYD Atto 3, Sealion 7 and M6 sealed the 3rd, 4th and 5th spot, which comes as no real surprise either.

The Denza D9 comes in 6th place with 129 units sold, and that is quite surprising since many thought the Zeekr 009 may be the better buy. We don’t think it’s a better buy though and we explain why in this review.

In 7th spot is the Omoda E5 followed by the BYD Seal in 8th then the Zeekr 009 in 9th and the Tesla Model 3 rounds up the 10 most popular EV’s.

Before ending this though, we do have to tip our hats to MG Malaysia for managing to shift 14 units of the Cyberster. That’s no small feat considering the price of the car.

Below is the complete list of the 30 most popular EV’s in Malaysia:

1. Tesla Model Y – 985 units registered

Elon Musk has confirmed he will stay on as Tesla CEO for at least the next five years, emphasising that his continued leadership is essential to maintain strategic control and resist activist investor influence. Speaking at the Bloomberg Qatar Economic Forum, Musk denied his commitment was financially driven, stressing it’s about guiding Tesla’s long-term vision.

His leadership comes amid rising investor concerns over his focus, as he’s been dedicating time to political advisory work, notably with former President Donald Trump. Though he plans to scale this back to 1–2 days a week, Musk’s political involvement has sparked backlash and protests against Tesla.

Hyundai Motor Group has revealed its next-generation infotainment and operating system, dubbed “Pleos,” featuring a large centre display reminiscent of Tesla’s signature touchscreen interface. Set to debut in the second quarter of 2026, the new system promises faster performance, enhanced vehicle connectivity, and a sleek, modern user experience.

Unlike Tesla’s button-free approach, Hyundai’s Pleos will retain physical controls, ensuring ease of use while maintaining a futuristic aesthetic. The decision to integrate knobs and buttons may appeal to drivers who prefer a more tactile interface, avoiding the common frustrations associated with fully touch-based controls.

Tesla has long been recognized for its highly responsive infotainment system, and Hyundai appears to be taking inspiration while offering an alternative for consumers looking to move away from the brand. If the prototype is any indication, Pleos could provide a similarly intuitive and feature-rich experience while distinguishing itself with added convenience.

Tesla has intensified security measures in response to a growing number of vandalism incidents targeting its dealerships and privately owned vehicles. To combat these attacks, the company has activated Sentry Mode on all showroom vehicles, a feature that utilises the car’s cameras and sensors to monitor surroundings and detect potential threats.

When triggered, Sentry Mode initiates multiple deterrents, including pulsing headlights, an alarm, and a visible alert on the car’s display warning that recording is in progress. If equipped with a USB drive, the system also saves footage of the incident while simultaneously notifying the vehicle owner via the Tesla mobile app. In addition to this technological safeguard, Tesla has expanded physical security at its dealerships to further protect its inventory.

The surge in vandalism appears to be linked to protests against CEO Elon Musk’s political affiliations, particularly his advisory role to former U.S. President Donald Trump. While domestic and international authorities remain vigilant, concerns persist that public acknowledgment of Sentry Mode may encourage vandals to devise new strategies to bypass security measures. Industry analysts have also highlighted the limitations of the system, including its reliance on a sufficient battery charge, requiring at least 20% power to remain operational.

Beyond showroom vandalism, Tesla continues to face broader challenges. In Hamilton, Ontario, local police launched an investigation into a series of incidents targeting a Tesla dealership, further underscoring the global nature of the problem. Meanwhile, despite the security upgrades, some acts of vandalism persist, with perpetrators seemingly unaware they are being recorded.
