Nilai jenama Toyota melonjak 23% kepada USD 64.7 bilion, didorong oleh jualan kukuh dan tumpuan strategik pada kenderaan hibrid.

Ketika industri automotif berdepan cabaran dalam peralihan kepada kenderaan elektrik (EV), pendekatan Toyota yang menekankan teknologi hibrid telah menarik minat pengguna yang mahukan kecekapan bahan api tanpa bergantung sepenuhnya kepada infrastruktur pengecasan EV. Toyota has reclaimed its position as the world’s most valuable automotive brand, overtaking both Mercedes-Benz and Tesla, according to the latest Automotive Industry 2025 report by leading brand valuation consultancy Brand Finance. The Japanese automaker’s brand value surged by 23% to USD 64.7 billion, driven by strong sales and a strategic focus on hybrid vehicles.

As the industry grapples with a slower-than-expected transition to fully electric vehicles (EVs), Toyota’s emphasis on hybrids has resonated with consumers seeking fuel efficiency without the infrastructure challenges of EV adoption. The company’s ability to optimize production and maintain profitability despite rising material costs has reinforced its leadership. AI-driven supply chain management and a diverse product mix have also contributed to Toyota’s sustained growth.

Tesla, which previously held a dominant position in brand value rankings, experienced a significant decline of 26%, bringing its valuation down to USD 43.0 billion and placing it in third position. The decline has been attributed to missed revenue expectations, intensified competition in the EV sector, and aggressive price cuts in key markets, particularly China. Dalam usaha mencapai sasaran pelepasan ketat Kesatuan Eropah (EU) menjelang 2025, beberapa pengeluar kereta utama telah membentuk kerjasama strategik dengan Tesla. Langkah ini bertujuan untuk memanfaatkan lebihan tenaga bersih Tesla bagi mengimbangi pelepasan karbon dan mengelakkan denda besar.

Keperluan Sasaran Pelepasan EU

Peraturan EU menetapkan pelepasan CO₂ purata keseluruhan armada kenderaan dikurangkan daripada 106.6 gram CO₂ per kilometer kepada 93.6 gram pada tahun 2025. Setiap pengeluar memiliki sasaran khusus berdasarkan komposisi armada mereka.

Untuk menangani cabaran ini, jenama seperti Toyota, Ford, Mazda, Stellantis, Subaru, dan Leapmotor telah membentuk “Superpool” dengan Tesla. Gabungan ini kini mewakili 33% pasaran kenderaan dan 30% pasaran EV di Eropah.

In a bid to comply with the European Union’s stringent emissions targets for 2025, several major car manufacturers have joined forces with Tesla. The collaboration aims to pool emissions credits, leveraging Tesla’s clean-energy surplus to offset shortfalls and dodge significant fines.

Under the EU’s regulations, overall fleet emissions must fall from 106.6 grams of CO₂ per kilometre to 93.6 grams this year. Each automaker has specific targets to meet based on their fleet composition. To address the challenge, Toyota, Ford, Mazda, Stellantis, Subaru, and Leapmotor have formed a “Superpool” with Tesla. Together, these brands represent 33% of the vehicle market and 30% of the EV market in Europe.

Tesla’s Role and the Financial Stakes

Tesla, the global leader in emissions credit trading, plays a critical role in this strategy. The pooling agreement narrows the group’s emissions gap to within 4 grams of the target, according to Will Roberts, Automotive Research Lead at Rho Motion.

Tesla has unveiled a tempting perk for latecomers to its Cybertruck Foundation Series: free lifetime Supercharging for all orders placed on or after December 27, 2024. This exclusive benefit adds to the allure of owning one of Tesla’s highly anticipated electric trucks, which debuted earlier this year.

The Foundation Series, akin to a collector’s edition, includes the first Cybertrucks to roll off the assembly line, starting in October 2024. Early adopters who shelled out an extra $20,000 (around RM89,641) for the privilege received not only priority delivery but also access to Tesla’s Full Self-Driving suite, a Powershare mobile connector, and various customisation options.

Terms and Conditions of Lifetime Supercharging

While free lifetime Supercharging is an attractive feature, it comes with limitations. The benefit is linked exclusively to the original owner’s Tesla account and cannot be transferred to subsequent owners or other Tesla vehicles. This means that if you decide to sell your Cybertruck, the new owner won’t inherit the lifetime Supercharging perk, and you won’t be able to transfer it to any future Tesla purchase.

Halangan untuk Pengeluar Bateri China

Pengeluar bateri dan EV China, termasuk CATL dan BYD, menghadapi pelbagai sekatan di AS:

  • Tarif tinggi dan dasar perlindungan ekonomi.
  • Kebimbangan keselamatan negara, yang menghadkan peluang kerjasama.
  • Dasar pentadbiran Biden mengecualikan bateri buatan China daripada subsidi EV.
  • Rang undang-undang Republikan yang mencadangkan insentif EV hanya untuk teknologi bateri bukan buatan China, walaupun teknologi itu dilesenkan kepada firma Amerika seperti Ford dan Tesla.

Robin Zeng, founder and chairman of Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. (CATL), the world’s leading battery manufacturer, has expressed openness to building a U.S. plant if the political climate under President-elect Donald Trump allows for Chinese investment in the electric vehicle (EV) supply chain.

Barriers to Entry for Chinese Battery Makers

Zeng highlighted that Chinese EV and battery manufacturers, including CATL and BYD, have faced significant trade restrictions in the U.S., including high tariffs, protectionist policies, and national security concerns. The Biden administration’s policies excluded Chinese-made batteries from EV subsidies, while a Republican-backed bill seeks to limit EV incentives for vehicles using Chinese battery technology, even when licensed by American firms like Ford and Tesla.

Despite these challenges, Zeng noted Trump’s potential openness to allowing Chinese automakers to set up U.S.-based manufacturing plants under conditions that benefit American workers. “I do hope that in the future they are open to investments,” Zeng said.

The tragic crash of a Tesla Model Y in Toronto in October has raised serious concerns about the accessibility and usability of the car’s electronic door handles during emergencies. The fiery accident claimed the lives of four individuals: Neelraj Gohil (25), his sister Ketaba Gohil (29), Jay Sisodiya, and Digvijay Patel, leaving a sole survivor, a woman in her 20s.

The woman’s escape was made possible by Rick Harper, a Canada Post employee, who heroically smashed the car’s window with a metal pole. Harper described the survivor as “desperate to get out,” but unable to open the car’s doors from inside. Tesla vehicles rely on an electronic button to open doors rather than traditional handles, and if the car’s power system fails in a crash, the doors may become inoperable.

Concerns About Tesla’s Safety Design

While Tesla promotes a “safety-first design” and manual override mechanisms for emergencies, these features are not widely known or intuitive. The manual override involves removing a door panel and pulling a hidden cable — a process that could be difficult or impossible in the chaos and panic of a serious accident.

Safety experts and crash investigators have raised concerns that victims may not be aware of the override feature or may lack the presence of mind to locate and use it under duress.

BMW berjaya menerajui pasaran kenderaan elektrik bateri (BEV) di Eropah buat pertama kalinya pada Julai 2024, mengatasi Tesla dalam pencapaian penting ini. Berdasarkan data dari JATO Dynamics, BMW berjaya menjual 14,869 unit BEV pada bulan tersebut, melebihi Tesla dengan kira-kira 300 unit. Peralihan ini menandakan kejayaan yang semakin meningkat bagi pembuat kereta tradisional dalam pasaran kenderaan elektrik, yang sebelum ini didominasi oleh Tesla.

Pencapaian ini dicapai di tengah-tengah trend yang menunjukkan jenama kereta tradisional, yang disokong oleh dasar kerajaan dan kesetiaan pelanggan yang kuat, mula mengejar pengeluar kenderaan elektrik tulen seperti Tesla.
