Toyota

UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) has closed September 2025 on a strong note, reporting total sales of 8,172 units for the month, which pushes its year-to-date tally to 70,418 units. The solid performance reaffirms Toyota’s position as Malaysia’s leading non-national car brand, driven by its reputation for reliability, innovation, and accessible electrified mobility.

The company’s consistent growth continues to align with its “Mobility for All” philosophy, a vision that focuses on providing practical, high-quality vehicles to suit the needs of all Malaysians. Toyota’s wide model range, coupled with dependable after-sales service and its commitment to continuous improvement, has helped the brand remain a trusted choice among local drivers.

Toyota’s hybrid range has become increasingly popular among Malaysians who are looking for practical electrification solutions without the need for charging infrastructure. These self-charging hybrids not only deliver fuel savings and lower emissions but also maintain the familiar driving experience of a petrol vehicle. With more than twenty years of hybrid expertise, Toyota continues to lead the segment in Malaysia with models such as the Corolla Cross Hybrid, which remains a strong performer in its class.

The Toyota Hilux has long been a familiar sight on Malaysian roads, whether it’s serving as a rugged workhorse for businesses or doubling as a reliable family and lifestyle truck. Toyota Malaysia markets it with the usual emphasis on toughness, durability, and a servicing network that stretches across the country—qualities that explain why it continues to be one of the best-selling pickups in the market.

But if recent leaks from Australia are anything to go by, the next-generation Hilux due in 2026 could be very different from what Malaysians are used to. Documents filed for homologation reveal changes that point to a more powerful and tech-laden truck, though they may come with higher costs and fewer body style options.

According to Drive, the filings, listed under new “GUN2” model codes (the current Hilux runs under “GUN1”), suggest a major reshuffle in the powertrain line-up. Central to this is the 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine, which could become the standard across the range.

In contrast, the 2.7-litre petrol engine looks set to be dropped, particularly from the lower trims. Another notable omission could be the extra-cab body style, leaving buyers with only single-cab and double-cab choices.

Japan’s leading car magazine Best Car has reported that Toyota and Mazda may be co-developing the next generation of the Mazda MX-5 and Toyota GR86. If true, the collaboration would mark a major shift in Toyota’s sports car strategy and ensure the continued future of two of the world’s best-known affordable performance cars.

Toyota and Mazda first entered into a formal partnership in 2015, later strengthening it into a capital alliance in 2017. Beyond vehicle supply arrangements, the two companies have collaborated on electric vehicles and software-defined vehicle development.

Best Car’s October issue notes that the close ties between Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda and Mazda President Masahiro Moro have helped strengthen the relationship. Both executives are long-time drivers with experience in competitive racing, which has shaped their shared perspective on building sports cars.

The MX-5 holds a unique position in the global car industry. Since its introduction in 1989, it has been the world’s best-selling roadster and a catalyst for other two-seat sports cars such as the Porsche Boxster, BMW Z3, and Audi TT. Meanwhile, the GR86 has carried Toyota’s reputation in the affordable sports coupe segment, originally developed in partnership with Subaru.

Toyota Australia is thinking about bringing in more electric cars from China as it looks to grow its EV line-up.

Sean Hanley, Toyota Australia’s Sales and Marketing boss, said the company is watching what its partners in China are making. He explained that Toyota already has strong ties with factories there and sees no issue with selling Chinese-built cars in Australia, as long as they meet Toyota’s standards.

Right now, Toyota only has one electric car worldwide – the bZ4X SUV. An updated version will arrive later this year, and a Touring version with more space is coming in 2025.

In China, Toyota already sells more EVs, such as the bZ3 sedan, bZ5 SUV coupe, and bigger models like the bZ7 and bZ3X SUV. These are built with local partners FAW and GAC.

The Toyota Research Institute (TRI) has revealed new research showing how behavioural science can play a major role in improving electric vehicle (EV) charging habits, ultimately cutting carbon emissions more effectively. The studies, carried out in both the United States and Japan, tested a prototype app called ChargeMinder, designed by TRI’s Human-Centred Artificial Intelligence division.

Instead of relying purely on technology, the research highlighted how subtle behavioural nudges can change the way people interact with their vehicles. In the U.S., plug-in hybrid (PHEV) drivers increased their charging frequency by around 10% thanks to targeted interventions.

Meanwhile, in Japan, both PHEV and battery electric vehicle (BEV) users shifted a significant portion of their charging to hours with the highest renewable energy supply — nearly 59% more than before — which translated to about 30 minutes of extra daytime charging per vehicle each day.

Beyond the environmental benefits, the experiments also improved driver satisfaction. In the U.S., PHEV owners reported a 16-point increase in satisfaction levels, with every participant ending up fully satisfied with their vehicles.

Toyota Gazoo Racing (TGR) has introduced an updated version of the GR Corolla, with orders now available at Toyota dealers in Japan, ahead of sales commencing on November 3.

Structural and Cooling Upgrades

The revised GR Corolla comes with a stiffer body and improved intake cooling. Structural adhesive now extends to 32.7 metres of the chassis—almost 14 metres more than before—mainly around the front, floor, and rear wheel wells. This makes the body more rigid without adding significant weight, helping the car remain composed whether on city streets or race circuits.

To ensure stable performance under heavy load, Toyota has added a high-speed cooling duct to the intake system. By pulling cool air directly from the grille, the duct lowers intake temperatures during sustained hard driving, keeping the 1.6-litre G16E-GTS turbo engine performing consistently at full output.
