Xpeng Inc, pembuat kenderaan elektrik (EV) China, mengumumkan bahawa ia telah memeterai perjanjian kerjasama teknikal dengan Volkswagen AG untuk membangunkan penyelesaian elektrik dan elektronik baharu bagi semua kereta berkuasa bateri buatan China di bawah jenama Volkswagen. Penyelesaian ini akan berdasarkan platform Utama China VW dan platform Modular Electric Drive Matrix (MEB).

Penubuhan Rumah Projek Bersama

Untuk memudahkan kerjasama ini, Xpeng dan Volkswagen telah menubuhkan rumah projek di Guangzhou dan Hefei, yang merupakan lokasi hab teknologi Xpeng dan VW di China masing-masing. Lokasi-lokasi ini akan membolehkan jurutera daripada kedua-dua pembuat kereta bekerjasama rapat. Kereta pertama yang dilengkapi dengan seni bina yang dibangunkan bersama dijangka memulakan pengeluaran dalam masa kira-kira 24 bulan.

Xpeng Inc will deepen its cooperation with Volkswagen AG, with both companies pledging to develop a new electrical and electronic solution for all battery-powered cars made in China under the VW brand.

New Technical Collaboration Agreement

The Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker announced on Monday that it has entered into a technical collaboration agreement with Volkswagen to develop solutions for locally made vehicles. These solutions will be based on VW’s China Main platform and Modular Electric Drive Matrix (MEB) platform.

Joint Project Houses

To facilitate this collaboration, Xpeng and Volkswagen have established project houses in Guangzhou and Hefei. These locations are where Xpeng and VW’s technology hub in China are respectively based, enabling engineers from both automakers to work closely together. The first car equipped with the jointly developed architecture is expected to start production within approximately 24 months.

Volkswagen has announced a significant shift in its electrification strategy, redirecting a portion of its EV-designated funds towards the development of petrol engines. Arno Antlitz, the company’s Chief Financial Officer, revealed that Volkswagen will allocate approximately $65 billion to ensure its combustion-engine cars remain competitive.

Despite acknowledging that electric vehicles (EVs) represent the future, Antlitz emphasised that traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) technology still has a crucial role. This adjustment marks a departure from Volkswagen’s earlier commitments, including its stated goal to sell EVs in Europe by 2033 exclusively. The company had previously projected that EVs would comprise 80 per cent of its global sales by the end of the decade.

The implications of this strategic shift for Volkswagen’s model lineup in the United States remain uncertain. However, it is anticipated that the U.S. market may see an increase in hybrid models alongside existing petrol-engine vehicles like the GTI. Volkswagen’s ID electric vehicles, particularly the ID.4, have faced lukewarm market reception in the U.S., potentially influencing this reallocation of resources.

The new GTI Clubsport, an enhanced variant of the facelifted GTI, introduces several key updates from the regular Grand Touring Injection (GTI) models from Wolfsburg. This more powerful version features distinctive design elements, including a unique front bumper, a prominent rear spoiler, and larger Quadrifoglio-style wheels, available in 18-inch as standard with an optional 19-inch set.

With the launch of the Mk8.5 models, the power difference between the standard GTI and the Clubsport has narrowed. The standard GTI now produces an additional 20hp, increasing its total to 261hp. In contrast, the Clubsport maintains its 296hp, preserving a 35hp advantage. Additionally, the Clubsport benefits from an extra 30Nm of torque, bringing its total to 400Nm.

Both models are equipped with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (DSG), marking a departure from the previous Mk7 generation, where the Clubsport was available with a manual gearbox. In terms of performance, the standard GTI accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in 5.9 seconds, while the Clubsport does so in 5.6 seconds. Both models are electronically limited to a top speed of 250km/h. However, the Clubsport offers an optional Race Package that boosts the top speed to 268km/h and includes a robust Akrapovič exhaust system. This package also upgrades the Clubsport with chunkier brakes and a special mode within the Sport driving profile to further enhance performance.

Standard features for both models include a limited-slip differential and progressive steering, with optional adaptive Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) for improved handling. Inside, both the GTI and the Clubsport are equipped with an enlarged 12.9-inch touchscreen for the upgraded infotainment system. Notably, the touch sliders in these models are now illuminated, and the steering wheel has been updated to feature traditional buttons instead of capacitive touch keys, addressing previous usability concerns.
