Petron stations around Malaysia have organize the ‘Jom Bantu Food Bank and Community Table’ for communities affected by the pandemic. Inspired by the message “Take what you need, Give what you can,” these community pantries located in over Petron service stations aim to provide those in need with easy access to essential items while giving others an opportunity to help vulnerable sectors.

In a show of solidarity and support, local residents and customers have been contributing to these community tables, while Petron employees donated cash and other items. In Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Petron Jalan Ulam North service station supported local farmers by sourcing fresh fruit and vegetables from them.

“We source fresh fruits and vegetables from our local, rural farmers as a way to support local businesses. We then give it to the people in need. The 2-in-1 initiative is our way to help the public during this pandemic,” said Philomena Munang, dealer of Petron Ulam North.

Basic and essential items for free
The community tables are stocked with rice, sugar, salt, flour, cooking oil, biscuits, eggs, noodles, canned food, dried food, toilet paper, and soap, among other basic items. These will be available at the stations and free for those who might need them.

In Kedah, Petron Jalan Lunas FI offered ‘whole fresh chicken’ to the community. “I strongly support the Petron Foodbank initiative to help those who are in need. We came up with an idea to give away ‘whole chicken’ in addition to the canned food and dry food stock on the food bank shelves. At least, they can enjoy a chicken meal with their family and put a big smile on their children’s faces,” said Mohamad Zaini bin Yahya, dealer of Petron Jalan Lunas FI.

Social distance

“With the current pandemic situation, with many losing their jobs, we are trying our best to contribute to society. We have participated in the Jom Bantu Food Bank initiative since 3 July. At Petron Sg. Besi Toll Southbound, we provide food resources such as rice, cooking oil, flour, eggs and many more to those in need. We also receive donations from the public to support our foodbank program,” added Sukinah Zulkifli of Petron Sg Besi Toll Southbound.

“This is the second year that we have set up food banks at our service stations. We are happy to partner with our dealers in showing compassion and exercising our corporate social responsibility. We also thank our many customers who have contributed to this cause,” said Choong Kum Choy, Head of Retail and Commercial Business of Petron Malaysia.

Collaboration with other parties
Petron also collaborated with KPJ Healthcare (KPJ) in launching eight KPJ food banks at selected stations to further reached out to those deserving people under this initiative. The first set-up by KPJ in Petron New Larkin opened on July 23 and was well received by the community.

“The response has been overwhelming. The food bank initiative allowed us to connect with others, creating stronger community bonds while contributing to society. It’s not all about money nor popularity. It’s about being able to be that someone who makes a person look forward to tomorrow with hope,” said Azura Abu Bakar, Dealer of Petron New Larkin Johor Bahru.

Petron stations in Johor are also working with the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Johor for the collection of food items at 10 Petron service stations. The food collection invites the public to donate food and essential items, which will then be distributed to targeted groups by the ministry’s state division.

“We hope to reach more beneficiaries through the concerted efforts of our dealers, KPJ, MDTCA Johor, and our employees so that no one is left behind. This is our humble contribution to help ease the burden of those in need. We are in this together and we will try to help in any way we can,” said Mr. Choong.

Earlier in May, Petron launched a donation drive allowing PMiles card members to donate points to B40 families in need of groceries. Under the ‘PetronMyKasih Jom Derma’ donation programme, each P-Miles point donated will be converted into cash and vested into MyKasih Foundation. The programme will run until August 31, 2021.

Fighting COVID-19 requires everyone’s support and efforts, in whatever way possible. The private sector, which has many different resources available, can provide much-needed support in various ways and Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM) has provided essential items needed by our hardworking frontliners.

Financial contributions
The company has donated RM20,000 to Mercy Malaysia to purchase 400 units of Tyvek Protective Personal Equipment for frontliners. Additionally, it purchased RM43,000 worth of items needed for a COVID-19 Assessment Centre (CAC) in Hulu Langat. Financial contributions will assist the health workers further in conducting extensive screening on possible virus carriers, contract tracing, isolating the infected, and dispensing care to those who need it.

Other initiatives include contributing essential items such as tents, tables, and chairs, portable air-conditioning units, queue barriers, and heavy-duty wires. At the CAC, COVID-19 patients are assessed before they are sent to hospitals, quarantine at treatment centres, or ordered to undergo quarantine at home. The CAC which MMM is assisting can accommodate up to 400 patients a day.

Three vehicles for public outreach vaccination program.
MMM has also loaned 3 Mitsubishi vehicles which were distributed to CACs in Stadium Melawati, Stadium Jugra, and Klinik Kesihatan Gombak Setia in the Klang Valley. The vehicles – one  Triton pick-up truck and two Outlander 7-seater SUVs – be used by frontliners to commute to vaccination centres for the public outreach vaccination program.

“Although our core business is producing cars, we are committed to doing our part in ensuring the country and our customers are kept safe. The recent increase in cases and impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has led to significant emotional stress among the country’s frontliners, particularly healthcare workers in Malaysia,” said Tomoyuki Shinnishi, CEO of Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia.

“We will continue to communicate closely with key NGOs and public institutions to see how Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia can continue to contribute. This pandemic is one of the most challenging times we have faced as a nation and thus we must step up and breach the support needed especially now where COVID-19 infections are at their highest. We thank our brave frontliners who worked tirelessly for us all,” he added.

In challenging times like these, Honda shows that it’s not just a company that makes and sells cars but also cares about the local community. In Malaysia, the company has demonstrated its corporate social responsibility in many ways, and the most recent activity is helping the local communities in Melaka who are affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Honda Malaysia has a special relationship with Melaka as its factory is located in the state. Recently, together with the Honda Malaysia Suppliers Club (HMSC), close to RM40,000 worth of essential goods to 6 charity homes in the state to help alleviate the burden brought about by the pandemic and total lockdown as well as to uplift their spirit through this gesture.

The 6 charity homes include old folks homes, welfare centres and orphanages. At the same time, this initiative also provided an opportunity for the company and HMSC to mutually strengthen with  relationship.

“2021 continues to be a challenging year for Malaysia with the alarming rise in COVID-19 cases, and the country was placed under a nationwide lockdown since June 2021. The near total closure of the economic sectors has resulted in difficulties in sustaining livelihoods, especially among the communities that need support, thereby bringing adverse impact on their everyday life. We understand their situation and believe in order to overcome the challenges, we must move forward “Together As One” and help each other in every possible way,” said Honda Malaysia’s Managing Director & CEO, Madoka Chujo.

“Striving to be a Company society wants to exist, we collaborated with HMSC in an initiative to help ease the situation especially for the elderlies, orphans, people with disabilities and the homeless. As the nation is implementing Phase One of National Recovery Plan (NRP) in several states, the charity homes are even more difficult to get aid from the public. Hence, this initiative enabled Honda Malaysia to reach out to them,” she said.

Essential supplies that were distributed included rice, flour, eggs and cooking oil, as well as hygiene products such as disposable diapers, detergent and shower gel to charity homes in the vicinity the  Melaka plant. Also provided were clothes for adults, as well as colouring books and small toys for the children.

“We hope the contributions from Honda Malaysia together with the aid from public donations and Social Welfare Department can provide some relief to their burden as well as joy and hope to the residents of the homes. We are also hopeful that the ongoing vaccination programme will help to curb the spread of COVID-19 and bring a safer environment for all of us in Malaysia,” Ms. Chujo added.

The 6 charity homes were Persatuan Kebajikan Kanak-Kanak Istimewa Dan Warga Emas Alor Gajah, Pertubuhan Kebajikan Warga Emas Dan Anak Yatim Victory, Pertubuhan Kebajikan Anak-Anak Harapan, Persatuan Kebajikan Sri Murni Insan Istimewa, Pertubuhan Kebajikan Bhagawan Sri Ramakrishna and Pusat Jagaan Pertubuhan Villa Harapan. A total of more than 300 people are residents at these homes.

Honda Malaysia constantly thinks of ways to help the less fortunate and even on media drives, they have organised charity distribution activities to bring supplies to needy homes.

Meanwhile, on the business front, Honda Malaysia’s plant and authorised dealer showrooms remain closed. However, owners can still obtain support services for preventive maintenance, repair work and towing assistance. Appointments must be made in advance before visiting a service centre, and in accordance with regulations, the service centre should be within 10 kms of the owner’s home. Getting as much of the population vaccinated to help reduce the severity of COVID-19 infection is a priority. The effort is being carried out by the government as well as the private sector, which is providing areas to set up vaccination centres. One such company is PLUS Malaysia Berhad which has established an Integrated Public Vaccination Centre (PPV).

The IPVC has been set up in partnership with its medical advisory partner, Primer Cherang, together with Protech Health, the implementer of private medical practitioner and healthcare NGO participation in the National COVID-19 Immunisation Programme (PICK). The IPVC is at the PLUS HQ  situated near the Subang exit off the New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE) in Selangor. The facility can inoculate up to 2,000 persons per day.

One of 14 public immunisation venues

The COVID-19 Immunization Task Force (CITF) has selected the PLUS HQ as one of the 14 public immunisation venues to accelerate the dispensing of vaccines through Operation Surge Capacity. This will ensure that all adults will receive at least one dose of the vaccine by August 1 and help flatten the infection curve.

“As of Sunday, July 25, PICK has reported that over 16 million doses comprising first and second doses have been administered, of which11.5 million of our population has received their first dose and over 5.4 million are fully vaccinated with two doses. Based on this data, PLUS is proud to be able to play its part in helping the country to ramp up its immunisation numbers. The sooner we are able to attain the target to allow us to enter Phase 4 of the National Recovery Plan, the sooner the economy can improve, and businesses can revive,” said Datuk Azman Ismail, Managing Director of PLUS.

PLUS Integrated Public Vaccination Centre (IPVC)

“I urge you to regularly check your MySejahtera updates and who knows, you may be visiting our Persada PLUS HQ soon. In the meantime, continue to adhere to SOPS if you must be out and about;  if not, it would be best to work from home where possible until you are fully inoculated. Hopefully by then, as the government has indicated, you may get to travel on our highways again,” he added.

The participation also provides the opportunity for the employees of PLUS to be part of something meaningful and historical. Warga PLUS will join as volunteers and assist the 150 health personnel from Primer Cherang and Protect Health.

The War on COVID-19 involves everyone – in fact, it is a global fight – and many companies are helping in various ways. Those with resources like factories have used their manufacturing facilities to produce Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) instead of their usual products. Carmakers, with lots of cars available, have also provided vehicles for use by healthcare personnel to get around and do their important work.

Recently, Perodua provided an Aruz and a Bezza to the Pusat Kuarantin dan Rawatan COVID-19 Berisiko Rendah 2.0 (PKRC) at MAEPS, Serdang in Selangor. The facility is presently used as a quarantine centre for those infected with COVID-19. The cars were provided through Agensi Pengurusan Bencana Malaysia (NADMA) which is responsible for emergency management. They will be used to transport essential items sent by families or friends of those who are in quarantine.

Together with the cars, RM300 per month of petrol vouchers have been provided and the Malaysian carmaker also contributed 5 laptops for NADMA’s use.

Various other forms of support

This support follows many other contributions made to key public institutions nationwide, especially the frontliners. The contributions have been in cash and supplies to help in fighting the pandemic. For example, last month, Perodua contributed an additional RM80,000 worth of medical supplies to Hospital Sungai Buloh, a key medical facility that handles a large number of COVID-19 cases.

Perodua has also supplied face shields, manufactured by an associate company, to various organisations in Malaysia over the past year. The recipients have been schools, clinics, local government offices and councils, and even hawkers at markets in Perodua’s surrounding community.

Perodua was among the companies that made a contribution to the NADMA COVID-19 Fund as the pandemic began in 2020.

East Malaysia not forgotten

While a large proportion of Perodua’s sales are in Peninsular Malaysia, the carmaker does not also forget that the East Malaysian markets have also contribute to its ascent to being the No. 1 brand in the country. And like a good corporate citizen, the company has been giving back to the local community there.

As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities last year, it provided the Sabah Women and Children’s Hospital with a portable flexible videoscope set, while 250 underprivileged paediatric patients received contributions ranging from school supplies to prescription glasses. These contributions were a follow-up from an earlier initiative in 2018 which saw the contribution of two laryngoscope blade sets and 40 bed pillows, and toys for some 250 child patients.

One of the longest running environmental program for Malaysian youth has reached its 20th edition this year. It’s the Toyota Eco Youth (TEY) program organised by UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) in collaboration with the Ministry of Education.

The 20th edition recently came to a satisfying and exciting conclusion with the announcement of the Top 5 winning teams from secondary schools around Malaysia. A total of 16 teams participated in the program which had a revised format and presentation due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. To overcome the new challenges and limitations brought on by the Movement Control Order (MCO), the activities were moved online with interactive e-learning lessons and workshops. In all previous years, TEY activities involved face-to-face interactions but the need for social distancing and to protect each other meant that this approach could no longer be used.

During the online sessions, the participants were trained on project management skills that incorporate Toyota’s Problem-Solving Methodology. This new e-learning approach, conceived within a few months, proved so successful that it will be adopted for future programs.

This year’s program had the theme of ‘Reimagining Mobility’, with the spirit of inclusivity and freedom of ideas as the foundation to this theme which depicts the creation of safe and eco-friendly mobility.

The winning teams
Following the final judging phase after each of the 10 finalists made their respective ‘pitches’ with live presentations on May 29, 2021, the winning teams were chosen. They are, in first place, Maktab Tentera Diraja, Kuala Lumpur (We-Sea-It Smart Tool); second place, SMAP Labu, Negeri Sembilan (UCOnverter Smart Tool); third place, SMK Kubang Kerian, Kelantan (Recybin App); fourth place, SMK Chung Hua, Sarawak (Recyclo Smart Tools), and in fifth place, SMJK Katholik, Selangor (MOSS AFV Smart Tools).

The winning team from Maktab Tentera Diraja with their project that developed the ‘We-Sea-It Smart Tool’ that can help to address microplastics pollution in water sources.

SMK Saujana Utama, Selangor won recognition for the ‘Best Community Engagement’, with Noor Liyana Shamsudin from Maktab Tentera Diraja nominated as the ‘Most Supportive Teacher’. Three students were selected as the Top ‘Agent M’ – Hani Nabila from SMAP Labu, Negeri Sembilan; Lim Bo Jing from SMJK Katholik, Selangor and Muhammad Uwais Darwis from SMK Majakir, Sabah.

Increased prize money
For 2021, the total prize money has been doubled to RM64,000 to further reward ingenuity amongst the youth. This year, the winning team received RM20,000 in cash, followed by RM15,000 for second place; RM 10,000 for third place; RM7,000 for fourth place and RM5,000 for fifth place. The Most Supportive Teacher was rewarded with RM3,000 and RM1,000 each was offered for Best Community Engagement and Top Agent M.

The Closing Ceremony was conducted live via a virtual platform with Dato’ Haji Adzman bin Talib, Deputy Director-General of Education Malaysia (School Operational Sector), Ministry of Education, as the Guest of Honour. Also present for the virtual gathering was Mohd. Shamsor Mohd. Zain, Director of Marketing, UMW Toyota Motor, as well as other senior representatives from the Ministry of Education and UMWT.

Holistic learning experience
“This year’s Toyota Eco Youth program reflected the adaptability of the new generation to embrace technological advancements and take on an innovative approach in solving the environmental problems. The fundamental training which is the Toyota Problem-Solving methodology was done virtually and I’m proud to say that all students were extremely receptive towards it,” said Encik Mohd Shamsor.

“Throughout the program, with the guidance of teachers and mentors, the participants would have learnt team spirit, confidence, communication, presentation skills, all of which encompass a more holistic learning experience,” he added.

Toyota Eco Youth 2020-2021

The well-thought proposals of the 16 teams were posted on social media channels for the public to view. Additionally, each team developed a podcast episode presented on the TEY Channel in two platforms – Agency on Leaderonomics FM and On TEY Channel.

Winners continue involvement
For the winners, the program does not end, as it did in previous years. The duration of the program will now be for 3 years and the winners from the 2020/2021 edition will continue as facilitators for the following year’s batch. They will thus be able to contribute their experience to the next batch. At the same time, digitalization of TEY is taken up a notch by setting up a TEY Apprentice online club.

About the Toyota Eco Youth program
Over the course of two decades, participants in the TEY have included 258 schools, 1,910 secondary school students and 762 teachers. Each year, challenging and interesting themes have been provided, and participants have come up with interesting, innovative solutions and proposals applicable to their school or community. Over RM7 million has been spent by UMWT to run the program annually.

“Toyota Eco Youth is a unique event in the Toyota world. Toyota Motor Corporation and UMW Toyota Motor are proud to be playing a part in cultivating environmental consciousness and innovative thinking for the young generation. It is assuring to know that the next generation will be ready to face new challenges that arise as we all strive to make our planet a better place for everyone,” said Akio Takeyama, Deputy Chairman of UMW Toyota Motor.

Non-profit organisations (NGOs) carry out a lot of work which involves travelling to and in areas where the roads may be poor, or may not exist. Typically, they will bring various forms of aid, especially food for those who are victims of poverty or natural disasters. INSAF Malaysia is one such NGO which runs several programs to transport food items.

To help them with their mission, Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia recently contributed a Triton 4×4 pick-up truck to INSAF Malaysia. The pick-up truck, a popular model in the market, will be useful for the distribution of food bank, lunch box and rice bags to orphanages and welfare homes, as well as ‘Meals on Wheels’ where food is distributed to old folks who have been abandoned or live alone. The NGO also builds shelter homes for those hit by natural disasters and urgently need a roof above their heads.

Promoting sustainable economy, society and environment
“Our CSR vision for this year is ‘Inspiring Lives Today for a Greater Future’. While our missions are to implement CSR activities that provides aid to support underprivileged children, and to collaborate with NGOs in promoting a sustainable economy, society and environment. So when we found out that INSAF Malaysia’s humanitarian efforts is constantly striving for voluntarily action, we want to support their work by contributing a Triton pick-up truck in hopes that the NGO can go beyond the distance and to help more underprivileged families,” said Tomoyuki Shinnishi, CEO of Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia.

After receiving the Triton on behalf of INSAF Malaysia, its President and Founder, Ishak Bin Abdul Kadir, said: “We have been witnessing a dangerous trend from the number of people suffering from malnutrition and food insecurity, especially during this pandemic. Hunger is on the rise in Malaysia as we’ve seen lot of breadwinners lose their source of income which leads to the inability to put food on the table. We are doing all that we can to make sure children or families don’t go to bed hungry hence we are so glad to have companies like Mitsubishi Motors reach out to us to offer help. The contribution of the Triton pick-up truck is timely, practical and very much appreciated.”

Popular pick-up truck
The Triton provided is one of the six variants available, all imported from Thailand in CBU (completely built-up form). The model has been among the popular pick-up trucks in the Malaysian market for many years. Early last month, the Athlete version was introduced which takes over from the Adventure X as the flagship of the range. In Peninsular Malaysia, prices start from RM100,200 for the variants with 4×4 and RM79,890 with 4×2.

Everyone has to do their part in fighting COVID-19 and the simplest way you can help is to just stay at home for the next two weeks (and it doesn’t cost you money). Businesses too are trying to help, even though many have been affected by the challenging conditions over the past year. But those that can help are doing so and one of them is GoCar, the on-demand mobility platform that offers ‘cars-as-a-service’ solutions.

To support COVID-19 vaccination efforts, GoCar is collaborating with the Kampung Tunku ADUN in Selangor to offer free shuttle service for seniors (60 years or older) and persons with disabilities. Available until August 31, 2021, the GoVax free shuttle service is offered to senior citizens and persons with disabilities who do not own private vehicles or who have difficulties accessing public transportation.

They can use the ‘GOVAX’ promo code which will get them the first 3 hours free for round-trip bookings. However, they need to make their booking at least 7 hours in advance so booking the day before would be a good idea.

GoCar GoVax Klinik Rakan Medic Petaling

Available within Petaling district
The service is currently within the Petaling district (which includes Petaling Jaya, Subang Jaya, parts of Shah Alam and Kota Damansara) and will provide free transport to and from the designated vaccination centres at Hospital Shah Alam, Klinik Rakan Medik Petaling Jaya and the Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre. The service is available for both first and second vaccination appointments if within the offer period.

“Since the pandemic hit, we have been looking for ways to do our part and help reduce the COVID-19 impact, be it by providing free car usage to healthcare frontliners during the first Movement Control Order (MCO) or by extending more savings to customers through multiple special offers,” said Wong Hoe Mun, CEO of GoCar Malaysia.

“Now, we are expanding support to senior citizens and people with disabilities. We are delighted to partner with YB Lim, who has been tireless in championing the predicaments that these underrepresented groups face in getting around, which will hamper their ability to get inoculated,” he said.

GoVax Shuttle Service

“I am delighted to partner with GoCar in this GoVax initiative to reduce barriers and ensure these high-risk groups are sufficiently vaccinated. A key factor in making sure public health policies succeed is inclusivity. Senior citizens and people with disabilities are high-risk groups in the sense that they are more susceptible to COVID-19 and have a higher mortality rate. However, they might decide to forgo vaccination due to mobility or transportation issues,” added YB Lim.

The company is also offering free three-hour usage of passenger vehicles for residents in Klang Valley and Penang. GoCar members and passengers can have peace of mind as all GoCar vehicles are sanitised on a frequent and regular basis.

How to get the free service
Contact the GoVax taskforce at least three days before the scheduled vaccination appointment by calling the 24/7 hotline 1 300-30-2633. Slots are limited and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. You will be asked to provide your name, IC number, mobile phone number and address for verification and coordination. Confirmation will be given and the person should be ready half an hour before the scheduled pickup time with IC/MyKad and mobilephone and proof of vaccination appointment.

The National Vaccination Program in Malaysia is free of charge.

The war on COVID-19 has not ended and our dedicated frontliners continue the fight to protect us and save those who are infected. The hospitals continue to need medical supplies, a large portion of which has to be disposed daily as they are part of the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) personnel must wear. At the same time, the hospitals also require other equipment for patients who may be undergoing intensive care or recovering.

Support for war on COVID-19
Perodua has always been supporting key public institutions nationwide in various ways, more so in the past year when it made major contributions in cash and supplies to help in fighting the pandemic. Recently, the Malaysian carmaker contributed an additional RM80,000 worth of medical supplies to Hospital Sungai Buloh, a key medical facility that handles a large number of COVID-19 cases.

The medical supplies included 5,000 face shields, wheelchairs equipped with safety belts, commode chairs, transfer boards, bed railings, rehabilitation chairs, walking frames, walking sticks and a therapy tilt table.

35,000 faceshields donated nationwide
The face shields, manufactured by an associate company of Perodua, were also contributed to various organisations in Malaysia over the past year. The latest contribution brings the total number to 35,000 pieces. Recipients of the face shields have been schools, clinics, local government offices and councils, and even hawkers at markets in Perodua’s surrounding community.

“We will continue to communicate with key public institutions to see where Perodua may contribute strategically in supporting the nation. We thank and salute our brave men and women who work tirelessly to serve us all,” said Perodua’s President & CEO, Dato’ Zainal Abidin Ahmad.
