G-Class

Mercedes-Benz has finally revealed the details of its much-anticipated electric version of the iconic G-Wagon, introducing the Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology. Departing from the typical EQ nomenclature, this model signals a new era for the G-Class, blending its legendary capabilities with electric propulsion.

The G 580 with EQ Technology retains the unmistakable design and ruggedness of the G-Class, featuring a ladder frame setup similar to the recently revised G-Class models. Its suspension layout, including an independent front setup and a redeveloped de Dion configuration at the rear, ensures formidable off-road performance while embracing electric power.

Unlike its ICE counterparts, the G 580 boasts four motors integrated into the chassis, delivering an impressive 879hp and 1164Nm of torque. This setup enables precise torque distribution to each wheel, enhancing off-road capabilities with features like the G-Turn mode and G-Steering assistance.

Innovative technology, such as individual-wheel drive and virtual differential locks, further elevates the G 580’s off-road prowess. Additionally, the vehicle offers impressive on-road performance, with a 0-100km/h time of 4.7 seconds, although its range may be somewhat limited, with an estimated 473km on the WLTP test cycle.

Aerodynamic enhancements, including air curtains and a rear lip spoiler, contribute to improved efficiency, with a coefficient of drag reduced to 0.44. The vehicle also features a robust battery protection system, ensuring durability in rugged terrain.

Inside, the G 580 offers luxurious amenities and advanced tech features, including an optional light band integrated into the grille and various storage solutions. It has the MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) infotainment system and a 12.3-inch driver and media display with touch controls are included as standard. The display and operating concept uses adaptive software to make personalised suggestions for numerous infotainment, comfort and vehicle functions. Smartphone integration via Android Auto or Apple CarPlay enables occupants to make optimum use of their mobile phone functions.

While pricing details are yet to be disclosed, the Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology promises to set a new standard for electric SUVs, blending performance, capability, and luxury in true G-Wagon fashion.

The all-new Mercedes-Benz G-Class continues the success story of the model series that was established in 1979. The off-road icon continues to rely on tried-and-tested ladder-frame construction, three mechanical differential locks and Low Range off-road reduction as well as a rigid rear axle and independent front suspension.

While retaining its iconic boxy design, the new G-Class receives mild electrification and a host of enhanced features, setting the stage for the upcoming EQG EV slated for release later this year.

At the heart of the base G550 lies a new turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six engine with mild-hybrid technology, replacing the traditional V-8 powertrain. This configuration delivers 443hp and 560Nm of torque, with an integrated starter generator contributing an additional 20hp and 200Nm. Despite the downsized engine, the G550 maintains formidable off-road capabilities, aided by standard all-wheel drive with a 40-60 torque split and three mechanical differential locks.

Mercedes introduces an Off-Road Cockpit function within the MBUX infotainment system, offering vital off-road information such as vehicle positioning, altitude, and steering angle on the 12.3-inch touchscreen. Additionally, the “Transparent Hood” feature allows drivers to visualise obstacles with the help of a 360-degree overhead camera.

The base G550 also boasts a suite of safety technologies, including adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and traffic sign recognition, while the Parking package enhances manoeuvrability with a 360-degree overhead camera. For those seeking even more performance, the G63 variant retains its twin-turbo 4.0-litre V-8 engine with 577hp and 850Nm of torque, accelerating from 0 to 100km/h in 4.2 seconds.

Visually, both the G550 and G63 receive subtle updates for 2025, with the latter offering a new paint option, adaptive LED headlights, and refreshed bumper design. Optional features include the AMG Active Ride Control, enhancing on- and off-road performance with hydraulic roll stabilisation and adjustable adaptive damping.

Mercedes has not disclosed pricing details for the 2025 G-Class lineup.

During the launch of the Concept CLA Class at the 2023 IAA Munich, Mercedes’ CEO, Ola Källenius, took the stage to make an even more noteworthy announcement. He confirmed the rumours that the famous G-Class was being scaled down. Källenius described this little off-roader while a boxy SUV design draw-up was shown in the backdrop. He made it clear that this “Little G” will run solely on electricity.

The smaller G-Class hasn’t yet been given a release date, but given that all we have to go on right now is a design sketch, it’s safe to assume that it won’t be until at least a few years. Källenius emphasised that Mercedes is well aware of the responsibilities involved in this endeavour while acknowledging the difficulty of living up to the iconic G-Class tradition. He guaranteed that the “Little G” will be “instantly recognisable” and confirmed that it will provide a pleasurable driving experience both on and off-road.

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class is an iconic vehicle that can draw attention in Beverly Hills and also transport its occupants across Siberia. The functional form in the original model launched in 1979 has been retained even as such vehicles evolved into the ‘crossovers’ of today.

It is thus an ideal model to be used as the basis for a unique art piece known as PROJECT MONDO G, a merging of automotive and fashion design in a collaboration between Mercedes-Benz and Moncler, a fashion house famous for its luxury and high quality outerwear and related accessories.

PROJECT MONDO G recreates the iconic G-Class (also known as G-Wagen in its early years) with the distinctive design codes of Moncler by merging the characteristic features of the SUV with Moncler’s puffer jacket. The collaborative art piece, which marks Moncler’s first automotive partnership, was presented today at the brand’s ‘The Art of Genius’ live show in London.

Mercedes-AMG, a part of the Mercedes-Benz Group, is celebrating its 55th anniversary this year. The company’s products have been associated with high performance, exclusivity and superlative driving dynamics and these would generally be passenger cars. However, to start off its anniversary, the company has created a special edition that is not a passenger car but a SUV. Perhaps it reflects the fact that the SUV segment is the hottest today.

The special edition is the G 63 ‘Edition 55’ which has received specific equipment and features for exclusivity. The G‑Class has enjoyed a unique position in the AMG portfolio for over 2 decades and is its ‘king of off-road performance’.

Introduced in 1999
The first production model of an AMG variant of the G‑Class was introduced in 1999 to mark the 20th anniversary of the off-road legend. The G 55 AMG marked the beginning of a new, highly successful chapter in G‑Class history. In 2002, the G 63 AMG set new standards. It was the first time a 12-cylinder engine had been used in the G‑Class. This was followed in 2004 by the G 55 AMG with a V8 supercharged engine, and in 2012 with the G 65 AMG that has a 1,000 Nm V12 engine. The current Mercedes‑AMG G 63 continues the success story.

The Edition 55 is available in obsidian black metallic or G manufaktur opalite white bright paint. The colours on both sides of the vehicle are coordinated with the AMG emblem and the suggested AMG rhombus. Distinctive contrasts are provided by the 22‑inch AMG forged wheels in a cross-spoke design with a matt tantalum grey paint finish and a high-sheen rim flange, as well as the AMG Night Package and the AMG Night package II. The fuel filler cap in silver chrome with AMG lettering also bears witness to great attention to detail.

The interior is characterised by the contrast of black and red. Stainless steel doorsill trims with red illuminated AMG lettering welcome the occupants who step onto black AMG floor mats made of high-quality velour. The mats feature red contrasting stitching and ‘Edition 55’ lettering woven in red.

The AMG Performance steering wheel in DINAMICA microfibre also commemorates the anniversary with the ‘AMG’ and ‘55’ badges, making the special model an exclusive collector’s item. Also exclusive are the AMG seats with a specific design and upholstered in 2-tone nappa leather in classic red/black. The exclusive ambience of the interior is rounded off by the AMG trim elements in matt carbonfibre.

The AMG story
AMG was founded by two men – Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher – in 1967. Both men were engine tuners and car customisers, and they turned Mercedes-Benz models into high-performance machines. Their fame took a big leap when they developed a Mercedes-Benz 300SEL for racing. With its 6.8-litre engine, it created history when it finished second at the 1071 24 Hours of Spa, beating much lighter rivals.

Their specialisation in Mercedes-Benz cars brought them closer to the carmaker and in time, their work was recognised as being of such high quality that Mercedes-Benz allowed its dealerships to sell AMG models, the first being the 225 bhp 190 E AMG in the late 1980s.

The race-winning 300SEL developed by AMG (nicknamed ‘Red Pig’) which made the company more famous.

Just a few years into the decade of the 1990s, Daimler-Benz brought AMG into its group with a controlling stake. This saw the birth of the Mercedes-AMG brand as a high-performance sub-brand while AMG became the unit that looked after everything to do with high-performance products, including motorsports. Eventually, most models would have AMG Line versions which had additional sporty equipment designed by the subsidiary

From a two-man start-up in 1967 to a state-of-the-art development site including its own engine manufacturing facility today, Mercedes-AMG continues to build on its position as a highly successful performance and sportscar brand through numerous successes in motorsport and the development of unique road cars.

Since 1996, Mercedes-AMG has supplied the Official F1 Safety Car and Medical Car.

The latest Mercedes-AMG SL.

The current Mercedes‑AMG portfolio comprises more than 50 models with a power range from 306 ps to 843 ps, and includes its first performance hybrid –  GT 63 S E PERFORMANCE. Apart from models derived from the Mercedes-Benz range, Mercedes-AMG has also independently developed sportscars such as the GT 4‑Door model and the new SL.

Moving into the era of electrification, Mercedes‑AMG will offer E PERFORMANCE – performance hybrids with an independent drive layout and technology from Formula 1. The portfolio includes all-electric AMG derivatives based on the Mercedes-Benz Group’s own EVA2 platform. In the near future, completely independent battery-electric AMG models will also follow, which will be based on the new electrical architecture (AMG.EA) which has been developed completely in-house.

10 things about AMG you may not have known

Mercedes-Benz’s cars will be well represented in the soon to be released Warner Bros. movie, Justice League. The highly anticipated release, which is based on DC comics’ comic book characters is slated to hit theaters around the world starting on the 17th of November.

It will feature many beloved characters from the DC universe that include Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash as they race to save the planet from an alien assault of catastrophic proportions.

Three Merc vehicles will enjoy the limelight in the Justice League film and serve as the primary mode of transportation of the movie’s protagonists. The new E-Class Cabriolet will be driven by the character, Wonder Woman played by Gal Gadot. The car is featured in a scene where Diana Prince aka Wonder Woman, drives on a mission to speak with Victor Stone, aka Cyborg.

Apart from this, a G-Class 4×4^2 will also make an appearance alongside Diana’s E-Class, but the star of the show will undoubtedly be the Mercedes-Benz AMG Vision Gran Turismo. This futuristic masterpiece oozes class and sophistication like no other vehicle. This is why, fittingly, it will be the vehicle of choice for Bruce Wayne aka Batman.

During the movie, the car can be seen piloted by Bruce Wayne, played by Ben Affleck, when he drops in on Barry Allen, aka The Flash, to recruit him into the League. Revealed to the world in 2013, the AMG Vision Gran Turismo was Mercedes-Benz’s ultimate creation for the PlayStation virtual world.

The car was specially modified for this movie by Merc’s own design team by developing a fully fleshed-out interior with illuminated elements, racing seats and a virtual dashboard section. Compared to the original concept car, the one featured in Justice League was scaled to 110% in order to accommodate seating the film’s rather tall, 6ft. 3 ½ inch tall Ben Affleck.

“With Justice League, we found the perfect partner to highlight our current vehicles as well as communicate the fascination of our brand. The E-Class Cabriolet is a natural fit for Wonder Woman,” says Dr. Jens Thiemer, Vice President Marketing Mercedes-Benz Cars.

We are therefore very excited to partner with Warner Bros. Pictures on this much-anticipated movie as we reach out to as many people as possible with a creative and innovative campaign,” he added.

Mercedes-Benz will be setting up an impressive marketing campaign to build more interest for the film’s release by introducing a 30-second TV commercial, print, online and OOH advertising. It will also launch six exclusive digital comic stories for Mercedes-Benz’ Instagram channels, developed in cooperation with DC’s Custom Creative Studio.
