PETRONAS Dagangan Berhad (PDB) is collaborating with AirAsia to bring Malaysian football fans to the second leg of AFF Suzuki Cup Final against Vietnam this Saturday. As the official fuel partner for AirAsia, PDB is sponsoring jet fuel for the discounted AirAsia flights for Harimau Malaya fans travelling to Hanoi, Vietnam to support our national football team. With this sponsorship, the cost is further reduced by RM50 per guest. AirAsia will refund the difference to all fans who purchased their seats earlier.

Speaking about the initiative, PDB’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dato’ Sri Syed Zainal Abidin said, “The team had showcased a tremendous performance at the last match and PDB is proud to be part of this exciting, patriotic journey. This is one of the ways that we offer value-added services to Malaysians as the nation’s leading retailer. We are happy to be able to team up with AirAsia to realise the fans’ dreams of supporting Team Harimau Malaya in person and keep their spirits burning.”

He added, “I would like to urge all Malaysians to take this opportunity support the team and be part of the excitement. We wish Team Harimau Malaya the very best, and do make Malaysia proud!”

Now here’s a bit of trivia from Petronas: Today, our domestic retail arm, PETRONAS Dagangan Berhad (PDB), operates more than 1,000 service stations nationwide. But #DidYouKnow, our first flagship service station was opened in 1981 in Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Kuala Lumpur, where it still stands to this very day? (below)

PETRONAS Lubricants Marketing Malaysia and Hong Leong Yamaha recently joined-forces to organise a convoy of over 1,000 bikes and motorcycle racing fans who travelled from Cyberjaya to Sepang to catch the Malaysian MotoGP at the Sepang International Circuit.

The bikers from across Malaysia, were flagged off for the 40km journey at TSI Arena in Cyberjaya by PETRONAS Vice President of Downstream Business, Dato’ Sri Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Tahir (above, left), Managing Director of Hong Leong Yamaha, Dato’ Jim Khor and PETRONAS Lubricant International (PLI) Head of Asia Pacific, Mohd Khalid Mohamed Latiff (above, right).

“It is great to see enthusiastic bikers supporting the biggest motorsport event in the country. Motorcyclists are very important to PETRONAS as our technology from the race track are translated into our in the motorcycle lubricant products we develop for bikes on the road. The riders’ feedback are important to us for further improvement,” said  Dato’ Sri Syed Zainal Abidin.

At the mall area of Sepang Circuit, the PETRONAS Experience offered a host of exciting activities for some 10,000 people who visited the booth. Visitors had a chance to participate in a 5D MotoGP experience, a PETRONAS Sprinta UltraFlex™ Challenge, purchase exclusive PETRONAS merchandise and win free premium giveaways. The PETRONAS Experience also included a meet and greet with riders of PETRONAS’ two teams – PETRONAS Sprinta Racing Moto2 and PETRONAS Sprinta Racing Moto3, who made special appearances.

For 2019, as recently announced PETRONAS, Yamaha and Sepang Circuit have signed up Franco Morbidelli and Fabio Quatararo for the MotoGP team. This marks PETRONAS as the first oil company in the world to sponsor all classes in World MotoGP Championship.

In line with the increasing demand for better quality and cleaner diesel in the region, PETRONAS Dagangan Berhad (PDB) today extended its enhanced PETRONAS Dynamic Diesel Euro 5 with Pro-Drive to Sabah, with plans to expand to 20 stations by year-end and to gradually increase the availability over the next year.

Based on the laboratory tests conducted, the PETRONAS Dynamic Diesel Euro 5 with Pro-Drive removes deposits and protects injectors thus allowing the fuel to effectively clean the engine, ensuring optimum engine efficiency. PDB’s Head of Retail Business Division, Aadrin Azly, said, “At PETRONAS, we continuously improve our products to ensure that we offer our customers only the best. Since we launched this earlier in Peninsular and Sarawak, we have received good feedback and have seen a marked increase in our diesel sales volume. Sensing the growing demand for better quality and cleaner diesel, we are ramping up efforts in making sure everyone will benefit from the new formulation, including Sabahans.”

In comparison to other diesel fuels in the market that were tested, results shown that the PETRONAS Dynamic Diesel Euro 5 with Pro-Drive recorded higher cetane number, which helps to improve combustion resulting in smoother drivability, cleaner emission and lower noise. PETRONAS Dynamic Diesel Euro 5 with Pro-Drive also has higher heating value, indicating more energy per kilogram fuel to deliver better fuel economy.

This is evident during an Experience to Believe road trip organised earlier for various diesel car clubs to put the enhanced fuel to test. One of the participants, Ritchie Fernandez, who drove a Mitsubishi Triton said, “The PETRONAS Dynamic Diesel Euro 5 with Pro-Drive reduces consumption, and provides savings about 2% – 3%.”

Another participant, Lum Tuck Chin, the owner of a Ford Ranger commented, “I definitely experience better fuel consumption. Even driving on the highway with heavy footer, I could still save about one litre per 100 kilometer.”

The improved PETRONAS Dynamic Diesel Euro 5 with Pro-Drive promises to deliver three key benefits for diesel vehicles:

  • Clean: Cleans and protects critical diesel engine parts to prolong engine life
  • Efficient: Improves combustion, optimises engine performance and provides greater fuel economy
  • Smooth: Easier to start, less vibration and smoother drive for a better journey

Yup, you read that right. I killed two of my bikes getting to Phuket Bike Week 2018. But first a bit of history. Any biker worth his or her leathers knows about Phuket Bike Week or PBW for short. It’s like a rite of passage when it comes to biking; every biker needs to do this ride at least once, because just like how Sturgis is for Harley-Davidson owners, PBW is hallowed-ground for all bikers.

I remember some years ago, I’d already decided to ride with a group of friends to PBW, but a day before the intended departure, my (then) bike developed a hiccup, which could not be cured in time. Instead of missing the event, I actually drove to PBW alone, in a clapped-out Proton Wira sedan 1.5 auto. Well at least it made it there and back, can’t say the same this time sadly…

It doesn’t take much convincing for me to swing a leg over a bike and go for a ride, so needless to say I was thrilled when the invite from Petronas arrived. In an effort to promote its new Sprinta motorcycle engine oil to a more regional market, Petronas decided to launch its new Sprinta with Ultraflex at Phuket Bike Week 2018!

I’m going to now sum up now very quickly what happened to yours truly during this ride, because it’s too painful to talk too much about it. Having flagged-off at Petronas TPM in Sg.Besi, with the first overnight stop planned for Hatyai, my Kawasaki Voyager XII (below) busted its coolant hose near Tg.Malim. Pulling into TM R&R, I assessed the damage and this time, duct-tape, cable-ties and super-glue weren’t gonna fix it.

I gingerly turned back and rode at 80kmh directly to my usual bike shop, left the bike there, hopped into a Grabcar, headed home, repacked, jumped onto my Suzuki Katana 750 and headed for the border, a full 2hrs behind the convoy. Amazingly, I managed to catch-up with them at the Bukit Kayu Hitam border, and the rest of the participants who’d already heard that I’d turned back at Tg.Malim thought they were seeing a ghost. A few actually poked me to see if I was real or not…

The next day my old Suzuki was going really well for a bike more than 30 years old, right up till Krabi where stopped at the traffic light, I noticed smoke coming from the engine; not a good sign. The bike had sprung an oil leak from its cylinder-head. A busted top-gasket would see a rather unceremonious end to my ride as she was loaded into one of the accompanying back-up vans, and I’d become part of the crew henceforth.

But we made it to Phuket Bike Week at the end of the day, where I was simply blown-away by what Petronas had achieved insofar as branding at the show was concerned. The entire main-stage area (above) looked like Petronas Town, and even the area just after the main entrance was set with a Petronas pavilion, replete with a mega-sized bottle of new Sprinta Ultraflex.

Let’s put it this way, it was nearly impossible for anyone to take a photo without at least some Petronas branding in the background. That’s how good the branding and awareness at PBW was. The actual launch coverage can be seen here.

I’d rather not talk about the journey back from PBW 2018, it wasn’t as pleasant an experience as riding, since I had to sit in a van the entire way back, but at least the company was good, my beloved bike was with me the whole way, we got home safe and that’s what matters. So what prompts bikers to flock to PBW? I saw bikers from all walks of life there, some had even ridden kapchais from KL to PBW and back.

Well, there’s no explanation for it, none whatsoever. I can’t tell you why I’ll likely try again in 2019, despite the distance to and fro and the inherent hazards along the way. It’s something you have to experience for yourself to truly understand. The atmosphere, the camaraderie, and sights and sounds. There are many bike weeks throughout the year, but there’s only one Phuket Bike Week. Once you finally ride there, you’l understand. Roll-on PBW 2019, I’ll be ready. – Chris Wee.

Launched! It’s the first time that Petronas has ever done an official launch in Thailand, and since it’s for motorcycles, what better venue than at the iconic Phuket Bike Week!

It was indeed a full-on razzmatazz affair right at the centre stage of PBW, in fact, the branding for Petronas is so strong at this year’s event, I wouldn’t be surprised if first timers here would mistake it for a Petronas bike event instead of PBW.

More details on the new Petronas Sprinta engine oil launched will come soon, in the meantime, enjoy the sights and sounds of Phuket Bike Week in the videos below!

And not forgetting the girls of PBW as well!

In line with the increasing demand for better quality diesel in the region, PETRONAS Dagangan Berhad (PDB) recently extended its enhanced PETRONAS Dynamic Diesel Euro 5 with Pro-Drive to Sarawak, starting with Bintulu and Miri.

Officiated by the Minister of Utilities, Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom, the new generation sulphur-free diesel, which was introduced in November last year in the Peninsular, is proven to deliver smoother drive and superior fuel economy with cleaner emission.

Speaking at the launch, Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom said, “Sarawak very much welcomes this new generation of sulphur-free diesel, given that Sarawakians are largely dependent on diesel. This will assure motorists that not only are they driving a cleaner fuel, but also one that is more powerful, giving them a smoother and longer journey.”

The superior quality of the new diesel is achieved through Pro-Drive, a combination of reformulated higher quality base diesel from PETRONAS’ refinery and uniquely formulated chemistries designed for today’s advance common-rail diesel engine.

The Pro-Drive technology is made available from PETRONAS’ continuous learnings from its partnership with IVECO, an Italian industrial vehicle manufacturing company, to formulate a winning formula for PETRONAS De Rooy IVECO team competing in the Dakar Rally. The Rally is known to be the world’s toughest and most demanding off-road endurance race and the team’s victory in the 2016 edition is testament to the fuel technology that goes into the PETRONAS Dynamic Diesel with Pro-Drive.

PETRONAS’ Vice President of Downstream Marketing, Datuk Seri Hj Syed Zainal Abidin Bin Syed Mohd Tahir said, “With the launch, we are availing the new diesel at nine selected PETRONAS stations in Bintulu and Miri by end of March, and are looking into increasing the availability to over 20 stations across Sarawak by this year.”

“We recognise that the state is undergoing rapid development with a few mega projects in the pipeline including the Pan Borneo Highway and demand for quality diesel will grow in tandem. We hope to speed up the availability as fast as possible to cater to this growing demand,” he added.
