With global oil and gas prices remaining high, the cost of transportation has also been impacted with increased fuel prices which, in turn, raises the prices of goods and consumables. For Malaysians, these are challenging times and those who own and use motor vehicles would want to minimise running costs as much as possible so that their money can be used for other essentials.

Ravi Tallamraju, Group Chief Technology Officer for PETRONAS Lubricants International (PLI) offers some fuel-saving tips which can help you stretch each litre of fuel:

Setel users now have a more convenient option of starting refuelling with the ‘One-Tap Fuelling’ feature. This allows them to activate the pump with just one tap upon arrival at all PETRONAS stations nationwide. The new solution is available to the first 1,000 registered Setel users around Malaysia, with a staggered rollout in the next 2 months.

Current Setel users who are interested to receive early bird access can opt-in by posting an Instagram Story or Tweet of their Dah Setel So Far page with the caption: “I want One-Tap Fuelling now”, tag @setel and include the #SetelOneTapFuelling hashtag.

From now until October 4, 2022, they also have a chance to win limited edition Setel gift boxes when they upload their most creative video on Instagram or Twitter showing their experience using the ‘One-Tap Fuelling’ feature’

In the upcoming enhancements, motorists will be able to pre-set their preferred fuelling amount – either by litres or a full tank, in the Preferences page when setting up the new feature. Motorists can also pre-set their preferred payment method, which includes CardTerus for direct payments via a debit or credit card, as well as Setel Share, which allows users to share their Setel Wallet or CardTerus with two others to pay whilst jointly earning Mesra points.

“We are constantly innovating and developing solutions that meet our users’ ever-evolving needs, especially in this endemic period where Malaysians are travelling more frequently than before. Over the past 4 years, our loyal users have continuously raved about their refuelling experience at PETRONAS stations. With this new enhancement that brings about a refuelling journey from the usual 5 clicks to just one tap through a one-time setup, Setel offers a more personalised and faster refuelling journey for its users. Gone are the days of rummaging through wallets for cash or cards to refuel and earn loyalty points,” said Mazlin Erawati Ab Manan, Chief Executive Officer of Setel.

Setel’s contactless service can be used at EV charging stations as well.

Setel has been in the market since July 2018, offering a mobile platform for motorists patronising PETRONAS stations. In recent times, it has also added EV charging for use by those owning electric vehicles. Its services include Setel Express, an in-app service for Setel customers to track their e-commerce deliveries and pick up/drop off parcels at selected PETRONAS stations.

PETRONAS Lubricants Marketing Malaysia Sdn. Bhd (PLMMSB), a subsidiary of PETRONAS Dagangan Berhad (PDB) which distributes and markets PETRONAS engine oil, is now further expanding its marketing network through an e-commerce platform.

The engine oils, for 4-wheelers (Syntium) and 2-wheelers (Sprinta) have been on sale on the Shopee platform since the middle of last year at the PETRONAS Official Store. Customers can easily choose from a range of premium products (fully synthetic, semi -synthetic or mineral) by vehicle type and viscosity and place their orders online as well as make payments.

The PETRONAS name will be absent from the racing cars of the successful Mercedes-AMG Formula 1 team after this year’s championship ends. It has been confirmed that the team, which has won 7 world championships, will no longer have Malaysia’s national oil corporation as its title sponsor. This comes after over 10 years of association between the team and the oil company, although its involvement in F1 goes back as far as 1995. The latest development follows Petronas’ ending of their MotoGP title sponsorship at the end of this year and no longer being associated with the Yamaha SRT team.

Over the years, Petronas has used its association with Formula 1 for many marketing activities, leveraging on the development efforts in fuels and technology. More than 50 engine oils, transmission fluids and hydraulic fluids have been developed for the racing cars to use in extreme conditions. The technologies and knowledge from such developments have eventually been used to develop commercial products for sale to the public.

It would certainly have been very expensive and while Petronas products are available in around 65 countries, many may not know it is a Malaysian company (although ‘MALAYSIA’ has occasionally been put on the cars. But the same can also be said of other major sponsors like Repsol, Santander and certainly, not many of the 500 million people who watch F1 worldwide will be aware that the ORLEN which sponsors the Alfa Romeo F1 team is a Polish petroleum company. Brands like Marlboro, Rolex and even Dell would have more global presence and recognition.  But Petronas believes the money has been well spent: in 2016, it estimated the value of brand exposure in F1 from 1995 was worth more than US$900 million.

Saudi Aramco to take over as title sponsor?
In place of Petronas, Mercedes-AMG is expected to have another oil company – Saudi Aramco. As the main company operating in Saudi Arabia, it has the world’s largest network of oilfields and its revenues are chart-topping. Saudi Aramco (which stands for Arabian American Company) is state-owned and was established in 1933. Described as an integrated oil and gas company, it is mainly in upstream activities and has no visible internationalpresence in consumer products, unlike most other oil companies. It does, however, have a network of fuel and service stations (in partnership with Total of France) in Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Aramco, which has been operating for 88 years, is active mainly in upstream oil and gas activities. It also has a network of fuel and service stations under the Sahel brand which is in partnership with Total of France.

The tie-up with Mercedes-AMG is the second major involvement in F1. Last year, Saudi Aramco announced a long-term global sponsorship with the sport, its first global sponsorship of a major sporting event.

“We are excited to partner with Formula 1, a strong global sports brand with millions of fans around the world. As the world’s largest energy supplier and an innovation leader, we have the ambition to find game-changing solutions for better-performing engines and cleaner energy. Partnerships like these are important to help us to deliver on our ambitions,” said Saudi Aramco’s CEO & President, Amin H. Nasser.

Involvement in F1 since 1980s
Saudi Aramco’s involvement in F1 is not Saudi Arabia’s first association with the sport. Older readers will remember that, in the 1980s, Saudia Airlines (the country’s national airline) sponsored the Williams team. Though the Saudia name was the most prominent, Frank Williams also managed to get eight other supporters from Saudi Arabia’s growing business community.

Saudia Airlines was one of the Saudi Arabian companies that were sponsors for the Williams F1 team in the 1980s.

The group included TAG (Techniques d’avant Garde), an advanced technology company which was founded by a Saudi businessman. TAG (which bought over the Heuer watchmakers) first sponsored Williams and the McLaren. Today, it also has a major share in the McLaren Group. More recently, TAG Heuer has been a major partner in the all-electric Formula E series as well, along with Saudia Airlines.

Major motorsports events in Saudi Arabia
The country’s ‘Vision 2030’ is also bringing Saudi Arabia into the 21st century and its society is changing, eg women have been allowed to drive cars since 2018. As a result, it has attracted three major motorsports events to be run in the country to boost tourism. The Dakar Rally and Extreme E Desert X-Prix, which were run in the deserts for the first time in 2020 and 2021, respectively, and later this year, the first ever F1 race in the streets of Jeddah. All are significant events which will be widely publicized, and organisers have made deals to run them over a number of years.

The first round of the inaugural Extreme E electric off-road series was run in Saudi Arabia in April this year.

About PETRONAS Primax 97 with Pro-Race
Launched in December last year, the all-new PETRONAS Primax 97 with Pro-Race has proven to deliver three key benefits that are most relevant to motorists today – power, responsiveness and efficiency.

Dubbed as its best fuel, the PETRONAS Primax 97 with Pro-Race utilises a formulation that is unique to PETRONAS. It is enhanced with the world’s first Advanced Dual Friction Modifier that reduces friction by 25% more than the previous fuel. The new friction modifier chemistry also incorporates a unique fuel and oil interaction formulation that helps increase fuel efficiency, resulting in further mileage and lower carbon emissions. The new fuel also removes 99.9% of deposits from key areas in the engine, unlocking the car’s full potential to achieve effortless power.

The performance of the new fuel was confirmed by customers through a series of blind tests. Conducted in real driving and road conditions, the test results revealed that a majority experienced better performance from PETRONAS Primax 97 with Pro-Race, compared with other premium fuels that they currently use. Specifically, 69% agreed that the new fuel delivers more power and 66% agreed that it is more responsive. In terms of efficiency, 73% of participants confirmed that the new fuel recorded more kilometres per litre, consequently emitting less carbon.

COVID-19

Five years ago, Petronas was the first petroleum company in Malaysia to upgrade its RON97 Primax petrol to the higher Euro4M standard (the ‘M’ referring to a specification adapted for the Malaysian market). Thereafter, other companies have followed and today, all brands are at the same standard.

Now, the company has improved the formulation of Primax 97 and it becomes Primax 97 with Pro-Race. The new formulation is said to help engines run cleaner with reduced friction as well, meaning they can run more efficiently.

Removing 99.9% of deposits
With the claim of 99.9% of deposits removed from key areas, fuel delivery can be better as there will be less blockages in the injectors and other parts of the fuel delivery system. The spray of fuel can therefore be optimized to maximise combustion.

Smoother and more responsive performance as well as increased efficiency are claimed for the new Primax 97 petrol.

At the same time, combustion can also be smoother because deposits can create ‘hotspots’ inside the combustion chambers. These cause mini explosions which cause roughness so if they are removed, then the engine will have less of those explosions inside.

Of course, it takes a while for the benefits of the new formulation to be experienced, especially if the engine has a lot of deposits already. They need to be gradually ‘washed’ away, a process that used to require disassembly of the engine after some years. However, once they are removed and if Primax 97 is used regularly, it can also prevent deposit formation again.

Removal of deposits in the combustion chambers (left) and the Advanced Dual Friction Modifier (right) help to make the engine run more efficiently and smoothly.

Advanced Dual Friction Modifier
The new formulation also has the world’s first Advanced Dual Friction Modifier which cuts down the friction levels between surfaces. This makes response better and as the engine can save energy that was used to overcome the friction, leading to improved fuel economy. Petronas claims that this new dual friction modifier can reduce friction by up to 25%.

There is also a unique fuel and oil interaction formulation to enhance efficiency as fuel and oil tend to have issued when coming in contact with each other. By eliminating this, carbon emissions are also lowered, which is better for the atmosphere.

Petronas fuels and lubricants have technology that was developed from its involvement in Formula 1 racing with the Mercedes-AMG team.

Technology from F1 involvement
The development of the new petrol was carried out with learnings from Petronas’ involvement in Formula 1, via the world championship-winning Mercedes-AMG team. For many years, fuel development has benefitted from extreme testing in racing conditions with the motorist being the ultimate beneficiary.

The new Primax 97 is available at all Petronas stations nationwide and cost the same as other RON97 petrol which currently is set at RM2.08 a litre until December 25, 2020.

Looking back, the introduction of the Setel e-payment system by PETRONAS was timely. With the need for social distancing brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, the cashless payment system made fuel purchases possible without having to interact with station staff.

Even the process of setting the amount required could be done from a mobile device from inside the car, although the driver would still have to get out and handle the pump nozzle. Perhaps one day that too will be automated…

The Setel Wallet now becomes more useful with Deliver2Me, another feature which uses the cashless payment process. Deliver2Me allows Setel users to purchase selected items from participating Kedai Mesra outlets at PETRONAS stations and have them promptly delivered directly to their vehicle while refuelling.

Deliver2Me is initially available at 6 participating PETRONAS stations in the Klang Valley and will progressively be available at all Setel-enabled stations nationwide during Q1 2021. The Setel system is already available at 800 participating Kedai Mesra outlets which accept the Setel Wallet. With the Deliver2Me feature, there is the option to pay for items in Kedai Mesra with minimal physical contact as an added safety benefit necessary in these times.

As with fuel purchases, customers can earn Mesra points automatically when using the Setel system (provided they have linked it to their Mesra card). Points redemption can also be done directly through the application.

“At Setel, we’re constantly pushing boundaries to deliver a seamless and frictionless experience to our customers beyond fuel. For instance, customers no longer need to wait in line after refuelling to grab a cup of coffee and nasi lemak through Deliver2Me,” said Iskandar Ezzahuddin, CEO of Setel.

“We are pleased to offer greater convenience to over 1.5 million Setel users through our cashless payment system in Kedai Mesra. This is just a stepping stone in our journey of expansion as we add more intuitive features tailored to individual customers, in line with PETRONAS’ growing offerings,” he said.

The Setel app is available for iOS and Android devices and can be downloaded and installed for free from the Apple Store, Google Play Store and Huawei AppGallery.
