All BMW M Models Will Bear The Competition Badge In The Future

In recent times, BMW has shifted its focus towards the Competition models for the X5 M and X6 M, indicating a strategic move to make them the starting point for full-fledged M models. This shift is part of BMW’s plan to revamp the M lineup, reimagining its trajectory for the future. The intention is to eliminate the standard M model entirely, with the M440i and similar lower-performance models bridging the gap between the regular BMW vehicles and the high-performance M models.

Frank van Meel, the CEO of BMW M, highlighted that the M brand has adopted the Competition layer as the new standard. The plan is to phase out the standard M model, making Competition the norm. Consequently, there will no longer be a distinct differentiation between M and M Competition; instead, all M models will bear the Competition badge in the future.

For enthusiasts seeking high-performance BMW sedans, models like the M3 Competition will become the preferred choice. However, for those desiring an even higher level of performance, BMW will introduce CS and CSL models, representing a more extreme option than the Competition variant. These will cater to enthusiasts seeking a track-oriented vehicle with a number plate.

Regarding the impact on pricing, the exact effect of these changes on the pricing of M vehicles remains to be determined. It is plausible that the starting price of the lowest-performance M model could increase due to this shift in approach.

Looking ahead, BMW’s M division has hinted at substantial changes in its lineup over the next few years. In line with this, BMW M CEO Frank van Meel confirmed that base-model Ms will be phased out in favor of a standard Competition package. The Competition package is set to become the new base standard, simplifying the product lineup.

Anticipating changes in 2024, BMW plans to introduce five new M-badged models. The 2024 M3 and M4 will receive Life Cycle Impulse (LCI) updates, and the M4 will also receive the coveted “CS” treatment, akin to the M3 CS. Excitingly, a new M5 sedan and wagon are also slated for release in the coming year.

Furthermore, BMW’s commitment to embracing electric vehicles is evident, with the revelation of an electric M3 in the pipeline. The upcoming electric M3 is expected to be based on the Neue Klasse platform, signifying BMW’s entry into the realm of fully electric high-performance vehicles. This bold move towards electric M cars aligns with BMW’s strategy for the future, offering a blend of electrification and high-performance characteristics.

In essence, BMW’s M division is embarking on a transformative journey, reshaping its lineup to align with evolving automotive trends and customer preferences. This evolution encompasses a shift towards Competition models as the new standard, the introduction of extreme performance options, and a forward-looking embrace of electric mobility within the M series.
