Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe and from it, electricity can be created using a technology from the space program – the fuel cell. Through a chemical reaction with oxygen, electrical energy can be produced with only water as a by-product. The fuel cell is therefore a strong candidate to power electric vehicles – except that the technology is still very expensive and hydrogen stations are very limited.

Nevertheless, companies like Toyota have developed fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) and its Mirai model is already in its second generation and sold in selected markets. Recently, a Mirai set a Guinness World Record for a FCEV by travelling 845 miles (1,360 kms) on a full tank of hydrogen. The journey, which was done in southern California, beats an earlier world record set in France in May this year that achieved 1,003 kms.

The official record attempt was closely monitored by Guinness World Records officials and followed the strict rules and documentation procedures. The record distance achieved was more than double the EPA-estimated mileage that Toyota uses in marketing communications for the model.

The car was driven by a professional hypermiler and a partner over a period of 2 days over a route from the Toyota Technical Centre in California where Toyota’s fuel cell development group is based. The route used normal roads which included the Pacific Coast Highway and included rush hour traffic on the San Diego freeway. The Mirai was driven until the 3 hydrogen tanks were empty.

By the end of the trip, the Mirai had consumed a total of 5.65 kgs of hydrogen and passed 12 hydrogen stations along the drive routes without having to stop for refuelling. It emitted no carbon dioxide whereas a standard internal combustion engine vehicle, over the same distance, would have emitted about 300 kgs of the gas that is said to cause global warming.

Toyota adds that the record was achieved by drivers skilled in hypermiling techniques that optimized the Mirai’s vehicle performance under specific weather and driving conditions. . Additionally, as on the car’s Predictive Efficient Drive can learn repeatedly travelled routes to optimize charging and discharging of the battery to help maximize fuel economy and driving range. They also leveraged some basic fuel-efficient driving tips that any driver can learn but the car itself was a standard 2021 model on sale to the public.

The Mirai is priced from US$49,500 (about RM207,000) which is about 20% less than the first generation that went on sale in 2014. Buyers can receive state government incentives to lower the purchase price. Hydrogen is sold by weight and in California, the price per kg is around US$16 (about RM67). To fill all 3 tanks on board, the amount needed would be 5.65 kgs which would cost about US$90 (about RM376) and can provide up to 640 kms of driving if you are not trying to set a record. The electric powertrain generates 128 kW of power which is equivalent to 174 ps with 300 Nm of torque to give a claimed  0 to 100 km/h time of 9.7 seconds.

Although the trend towards electrification of motor vehicles is seeing bigger and bigger batteries being developed to store and provide the higher energy levels to power the vehicles, the humble small battery in the engine bay is still by far the most widely used. After all, it has been used for many decades, providing electricity for the starter motor to crank the engine and serving as an ancillary power supply as well.

Although the battery, typically the 12V lead-acid type, appears to be the same ‘block’ as it has always been, it has actually evolved greatly over the years. Thanks to new technologies and materials, the battery has become more durable, reliable and longer lasting – and that’s timely because today’s cars have a lot of electronic systems that will draw on the battery as well.

For most motorists, the battery comes to their mind only when it is ‘flat’, meaning it no longer holds enough electricity to even turn the starter motor. Therefore, it is important to understand the battery and the important role it plays to ensure safe and hassle-free journeys.

Different battery types
Among the various battery types available today are the maintenance-free batteries. These ‘flooded’ batteries are sealed and do not require attention whereas other types may require regular inspection and topping-up of the fluid. Maintenance-free batteries are sealed and the Enhanced Flooded Batteries (EFB) with the latest technologies have become popular.

Many of today’s vehicles with start-stop technology and regenerative braking systems. may also require Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) batteries. These are designed to be more resistant to leakage and corrosion, thus enabling a reliable supply of power over a longer service life.

Start-stop or Idle-Stop technology shuts down the engine automatically during periods of idling to save fuel, and automatically restarts it when it is time to move off. This means the starter more is used much more frequently than before, which has implications on the battery.

When it comes to selecting the right battery for your car, Bosch Automotive Aftermarket Malaysia (Bosch AA) advises to motorists to always refer to the Owner’s Manual or consult the authorised service centre of the brand of the vehicle. This will ensure that the right battery is selected. Using the wrong type of battery may be detrimental; for example, a regular maintenance-free battery may experience accelerated wear if installed in a car with start-stop technology. This is because the engine will shut down often and then restart, so the draw on the battery is much more frequent.

Prolonging your battery lifespan
Although most car batteries are marketed as ‘maintenance-free’, there are several steps drivers can take to prolong their lifespan. One of the simplest methods is to have your mechanic incorporate a battery health check into your regular maintenance schedule to monitor the state of your battery. This can reliably predict wear and tear and even give an early warning that the battery is weakening. Many workshops and service centres are equipped with the tools and expertise to perform a thorough health check.

An often-repeated piece of advice is to start the engine regularly, especially with work-from-home becoming the norm these days. Where many people used to drive to work in the morning and back home in the evening, they may now not drive as much, and the car is parked for longer periods.

Batteries left idle discharge over time. This is often compounded by electrical equipment that has to be left active like anti-theft and vehicle telemetry systems. Bosch AA recommends driving continuously for 30 minutes at least one to two times a week to allow the battery to fully recharge. Short trips can be worse as they make it difficult for the battery to maintain a full charge, so take a drive occasionally.

Be sure the headlights and all other electrical systems are switched off when your vehicle is parked as some may keep draining the battery.

The best way to minimise battery discharge is ensuring all unnecessary electrical equipment, including headlights and infotainment, are fully switched off before leaving the vehicle. Alternatively, you could invest in a charging device like the Bosch C7 Battery Charger to keep the battery permanently charged to an optimum level.

It’s a numbers game
Have you ever wondered how a mechanic always seems to know what battery your car needs when a replacement is needed? Like all automotive components and spare parts, car batteries have specifications that communicate useful information such as its dimensions, battery capacity and how long it can last.

All car batteries come with factory recommendations for cold cranking amps (CCA) and Amp hour (Ah) values. These are essentially the minimum requirements expected of the car battery by the vehicle. Although it can be possible to get a car battery that falls short of these requirements to function, doing so may introduce issues to other parts of your vehicle in the long run.

For example, frequently starting the engine using a battery without sufficient CCA may damage the ignition system over time. A car battery does more than just getting the engine started when you hit the start button (or turn the key). Therefore, it is also important to consider other electrical equipment and accessories that draw power from the electrical system the moment you start your car before being drawn to more affordable options in the market.

As with other serviceable components and materials such as fluids and filters, always refer to the Owner’s Manual to ensure the correct specifications for your vehicle. Additionally, Bosch AA highly recommends to only use car batteries manufactured by reputable suppliers with reliable track records in automotive maintenance and aftersales services.

With the latest James Bond movie being in the news as it is about to be released worldwide, there is more than usual awareness of Aston Martin which has a number of cars used in the movie ‘No Time to Die’. The carmaker has been publicising its association with the secret agent for decades and even produces a limited run of the DB5 used in ‘Goldfinger’. The cars are equipped like the one in the movie, guns and all, and are virtually similar to those made 55 years ago.

Lunaz Design, a company owned backed by David Beckham, is also benefitting from the publicity associated with Aston Martin. The company is a specialist in converting existing cars to be electrically powered (such conversions are not permitted in Malaysia) and it has announced production of restored, re-engineered and electrified Aston Martin DB6 cars.

They will join the other models offered by the company that include the world’s first and only electric Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Range Rover and Jaguar sportscar models. Customers can also commission Lunaz Design, which is only 3 years old, to convert Aston Martin DB4 and DB5 models.

The company is now accepting orders, with deliveries to start in the third quarter of 2023. The prices will depend on customer requirements but Lunaz Design says that each car will cost more than US$1 million (around RM4.2 million). Following confirmation of orders will commence production and the cars can be in lefthand drive or righthand drive.

Each electrified DB6 by Lunaz will undergo an exhaustive bare-metal restoration and re-engineering process. This means clients are assured of the key requirements of usability, reliability and sustainability.

The car will be powered by Lunaz’ proprietary modular electric powertrain, developed entirely in-house. It uses the very highest standard European-sourced Tier-1 OEM battery cells and electric motors. The battery capacity ranges from 80 – 120 kWh and a single charge is said to provide a range of around 400 kms. Lunaz has chosen to fit CCS (Combined Charging System) capability, an internationally accepted system that allows for fast-charging.

With the different and higher performance characteristics compared to the original DB6 produced in the 1960s, the brakes, suspension and steering are all uprated for safety and driveability. Though owners may like the ambience of the original car, interior comfort and convenience are modernised with the provision of air conditioning and inclusion of the latest infotainment and navigation systems along with wifi connectivity.

The design and engineering team is said to be the largest of its kind in the world. The work is  overseen by Jen Holloway, the Design Director who is from Aston Martin’s Q-Branch, and Jon Hilton, the Engineering Director who worked across James Bond Aston Martin projects. They lead the team of over 100 engineers, restoration specialists and craftspeople drawn from companies such as Aston Martin, Bentley, F1, Ferrari, Jaguar, Land Rover, McLaren and Rolls-Royce.

Mazda Motor Corporation will be expanding its SUV line-up from 2022 onwards. While  the popular CX-5 will remain one of the core models globally, alongside with models such as the CX-30, the company has finalised development of additional models in the Large Product Group.

These models, including two new ones – the CX-60 and CX-80 – will be aimed at European and American markets, together with the new wide-bodied CX-70 and CX-90. The new models will be introduced throughout Europe during the next two years.

Featuring 2-row and 3-row seating, respectively, the CX-60 and CX-80 will also spearhead the European introduction of plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models that use 4-cylinder petrol engines combined with an electric motor. There will also be the new generation straight-six SKYACTIV-X petrol engine and SKYACTIV-D turbodiesel engine incorporating a 48V mild hybrid system. These engines will have high output while also achieving excellent environmental performance.

Fully electric MX-30.

The new CX-60 and CX-80 are expected to create positive business growth over the medium to long term. They will make full use of Mazda’s Building Block development and production strategy. This strategy enables the carmaker to  efficiently develop and deploy superior technologies by building up a set of fundamental technologies as ‘blocks’. Some of the technologies are already familiar – like SKYACTIV technology – with bundled planning and flexible production.

In addition, during the first half of 2022, a new version of Mazda’s first mass-production EV, the MX-30, will be introduced. This model incorporates multiple electrification technologies that use Mazda’s famed rotary engine as a generator.

From around 2025, the company will introduce a number of new products on a new EV-dedicated platform. With the introduction of these models, Mazda is on track to complete the electrification of its complete range by 2030.

After the long period of inactivity due to the Movement Control Order (MCO) lockdowns for over 2 months, the auto industry is quickly revving up again. Customers are visiting showrooms and the backlog of orders is quickly being fulfilled. For Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM), there has been a steady surge which led to a historic sales achievement in the month of September 2021.

During the first full month of business since the government permitted businesses to resume in mid-August, MMM delivered 1,521 units of its most popular model, the Triton. This volume also gave it the highest market share of 34% within the pick-up segment for September.

Brand among top 3 in non-national segment
In comparison to 2020, the volume of Triton sales increased by 5.1% within the first half of company’s Financial Year 2021 (April – September 2021), while the overall sales volume saw positive growth with a total of 6,907 vehicles delivered. This raised Mitsubishi Motors market share from 1.7% (April – September 2020) to 3.9% (April-September 2021), maintaining the brand’s position among the top 3 non-national brands in Malaysia.

XPANDER MPV bookings close to 13,000
Besides the Triton, the XPANDER MPV has also been growing in popularity. It’s unfortunate that, like a number of the latest models, it was introduced during a period when the pandemic restricted movements. Now, as the situation eases, it is clear that the model has strong appeal as it is the best-selling non-national MPV with close to 13,000 bookings since launch in November 2020. To date, MMM has delivered 5,756 units of the model, assembled in Pahang, to new owners around the country.

The XPANDER is priced from RM92,263 in Peninsular Malaysia (without insurance). As it is assembled in Malaysia, it is given 100% exemption of sales tax until the end of 2021.

Since the days of Henry Ford who said ‘you can have your car in any colour you want as long as it’s black’, the process of painting a car constantly evolved. In the earliest days, the work was done manually and took around 40 days to complete painting a car. Today, with automated processes using robots, the complete job can take about 18 hours (including passing through the oven). The principles are essentially the same but the technology has become more advanced to achieve higher quality, especially the finish.

However, one constraint in painting cars in factories that assemble them is that variations are very limited. Even the number of colours is controlled for optimization and for personalisation, the work has to be done outside of the normal process. Factory managers would love to do it Henry Ford’s way with just one colour.

However, in today’s market, customers want choice and those who can afford it also want a degree of personalisation. This is especially so in the premium luxury segment and the manufacturers even have special divisions to cater to such specific requirements.

Increasing scope of individualisation
At the BMW Group’s factory in Dingolfing, Germany, a new pilot painting process has begun where several paint colours can be used and designs applied without stencils or masking the vehicle as the process is free of overspray. This highly innovative application method not only increases the scope of individualisation for customers but also contributes to sustainability by reducing waste and energy consumption.

The process developed by the BMW Group, in collaboration with Durr (a well known company in this field) is known as EcoPaintJet Pro application. It applies waterborne base coats and 2K clear coat without electrostatics, relying instead on jet application. In the conventional procedure, paint is atomised by a rotating bell with 35 to 55,000 revolutions per minute and adheres electrostatically to the body.

Different approach to painting
The paint is applied using an orifice plate that enables high edge definition with a variable paint thickness of between 1 and approximately 50 mm. This requires maximum precision from both the robot and application technology. It also means two different colours of paint can be used, eg for a contrasting roof, with stripes and other designs applied on various parts of the bodywork.

The focus of technology and material development was on achieving the maximum range of applications. It will now be possible to paint every exterior component – offering customers virtually limitless options for individualisation.

No need for masking
Until now, custom designs like this can only be realised using manual masking, a time-consuming process. With the new technology, the material and personnel costs this previously entailed will be also eliminated, making it possible to realize these options at a lower cost. The precision of spraying means there is no overspray and therefore no excess paint particles to be disposed of.

A further contribution to sustainable production comes from lower energy consumption. Since paint separation is no longer required, the amount of air needed is also les. At around 7,000 operating hours, this results in energy savings of more than 6,000 megawatt hours and reduces the carbon footprint by nearly 2,000 tonnes per year.

BMW M4 Coupe used for trial run
The technology is being used for the first time for 19 BMW M4 Coupes. These will have custom two-tone paintwork and M4 identification on the bonnet and tailgate. With the paintwork for the M4 small series, the BMW Group is testing the possibilities of the new process. These unique vehicles will initially be used in the company’s own fleet. Wider use of the innovative paint process is scheduled to begin in 2022 when other factories in the BMW Group production network adopt it.

Those who know the name ‘Piech’ will know it is well known in automotive history as it is the family name of the great grandson of Ferdinand Porsche. Ferdinand Piech was a brilliant engineer who became CEO of the Volkswagen Group in the 1990s and it would only be expected that other family members would have an equally deep passion for cars.

One of them is Anton Piech, his son, who started a small car company in Switzerland known as Piech Automotive AG In 2016. His partner was Rea Stark Rajcic, ad industrial designer, and the company based in Zurich focussed on electric vehicles and EV technology.

2024 Piech GT

By 2019, the company had developed a flexible vehicle architecture and on this went a sleek sportscar body. It was called the GT Mark Zero and made its first appearance at the Geneva Motor Show that year. Naturally, the Piech name associated brought extra attention to the concept car as Ferdinand Piech and his great grandfather had come out with advanced and innovative cars in their time.

Piech Automotive had plans to develop the GT Mark Zero into a production model that could go on sale within a few years. But as with projects all over the world that started in 2019, the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 would cause delays but the production electric sportscar will be available by 2024.

At the time of its debut, Piech provided basic specifications which showed that the car would have a fully electric drive with a 450 kW (603 hp) output. This would enable a claimed acceleration time of 0 to 100 km/h in less than 3 seconds, while the target range was said to be 500 kms.

The battery and battery cell technology has received further innovation with a technical partner in China with a solution that enables a full charge in less than 5 minutes. This requires a fast charger specially developed by TGOOD, a company founded in 2004 by a team of German and Chinese engineers that specialises in EV charging equipment.

With more conventional charging stations, the battery pack can be charged to 80% capacity in 8 minutes, it is claimed. The battery pack has compact and robust pouch cells with low heat generation, which is why air cooling is sufficient for thermal management of the battery. The lack of liquid cooling – common in high-performance electric vehicles –  keeps the total weight to 1,800 kgs.

2024 Piech GT

Recently, the electric sportscar – which now has the name of Piech GT – has started its trial phase on test tracks. According to Rea Stark Rajcic, the co-founder of the company, it will have typical sportscar handling which was already clearly defined the positioning from the very beginning. “The new Piech GT should convincingly transport the DNA of a classic sports car into the electric age,” he said.

Latest details revealed show that the powertrain consists of one synchronous electric motor at the front axle which produces 150 kW, while another two motors at the rear generate 150 kW each. The additional thrust at the rear axle is what will create the sportscar driving experience.

The arrangement of the batteries (one part is housed in the centre tunnel, the rest on the rear axle) permits a similar axle load distribution and handling that had previously found only with pure sportscars with internal combustion engines. In contrast to the widely used underfloor arrangement, the package enables a low seating position typical of a sportscar as well as precise handling with immediate feedback to the driver.

“The second prototype will be completed by next March, with a further series of prototypes to follow before the end of 2022. Based on the test results from these prototypes, another batch of prototypes will then be built in 2023. Piech Automotive is exactly following the tried-and-tested testing cycles of German premium manufacturers here, with trials in heat and dust, in sub-zero temperatures with ice and snow, and on demanding roads and racetracks such as the Nurburgring Nordschleife, to be able to meet our target of starting series production in 2024,” said Klaus Schmidt, who was previously with BMW’s high-performance department at M GmbH for 30 years.

In addition to the Piech GT, the company will  gradually broaden the range with a sporty electric SUV and a sports sedan to be called the Sportlimousine. “Our modular concept not only gives us freedom in the design to create vehicles that are as attractive as possible, but at the same time serves as a platform for all other body shapes. The initial focus is clearly on the two-seater Piech GT sportscar, while the sporty Piech SUV brings additional volume in sales and the 4-seater Sportlimousine offers more occupant space and round off the product range,” said Stark Rajcic.

“Not only are we flexible in terms of design and body shapes, but we are also keeping all options open when it comes to powertrains. We’re starting with electric cars, but our modular vehicle architecture would allow us to respond flexibly to corresponding developments and breakthroughs in the field of hydrogen or fuel cells,” added Anton Piech, CEO of the company.

Warranties remain valid

On a related matter, Mr. Yao said that all authorised Nissan service centres are operating as usual in the Phase 1 and 2 of National Recovery Plan (NRP) period. The exceptions are those within the Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO) affected areas.

Nissan owners should note that services will be available only via appointment which can be made beforehand via DriveOn mobile app. Owners can also schedule an appointment by visiting www.tceas.com, calling the Nissan Customer Care Centre Hotline at 1800-88-3838, or directly contact the preferred service centre.

Owners need not be concerned about their vehicle warranties. TCEAS says they will remain valid even if the preventive maintenance service could not be carried out during the Phase 1 and 2 of NRP period. However, the vehicle should be sent to the service centre as soon as it is possible to do so.
