At the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City, the start is like a drag race as the first turn is 800 metres away. So being in pole position, as Max Verstappen was, did not necessarily mean having a great advantage but he was not too concerned since his car had an edge over the Mercedes-AMG of George Russell on the straights anyway.

So on lights out, the Red Bull driver got ahead, with Russell and Lewis Hamilton getting in behind him. Verstappen’s team mate, Sergio Perez, was watching for an opportunity but with Russell in his line, he was impeded a bit. Nevertheless, he pushed on the second corner and Russell had to go wide (with what seemed like a slight contact) and got ahead to emerge third after the corner.

The 499P is the new Le Mans Hypercar with which Ferrari will tackle the World Endurance Championship in the elite class from 2023. It pays homage to the Ferrari endurance tradition, re-establishing a historical connection 50 years after the 312 P made its last appearance in world endurance racing’s premier class.

The designation follows Ferrari’s practice where prototypes were identified by the letter ‘P’, frequently preceded by the number of the engine’s displacement. The 499P is no exception, but its powertrain is significantly different from past racing cars. The 499P’s hybrid powertrain combines a mid-rear power unit with an electric motor powering the front axle. The internal combustion engine (ICE) has a maximum regulation-limited output to the wheels of 500 kW (680 ps) and is derived from the road-going twin-turbo V6 family.

Sixty years ago, at the 1962 British Motor Show, Colin and Hazel Chapman presented their new Lotus model – a small sportscar called the Elan which was ultra modern, lightweight and promised to be fun to drive. It was a contrast to other sportscars that had come out around the same time, like the Jaguar E-Type, AC Cobra and Ferrari GTO.

What drew the media to Lotus – which had been only in business for just 10 years – was the fact that its racing team had already won eight F1 races and several times at Le Mans. And just as the Mini was attracting celebrities, so too did the new Elan. Culturally, it was an icon as the Swinging Sixties embraced cool new design.

Barbie, the American fashion doll which has had over a million clones worldwide since being ‘born’ in 1959 had an Austin Healey as her first car. But as she got older, she had a liking for Chevrolet Corvettes (typically pink) and also had many sportscars as well as a Rolls-Royce. She’s no stranger to Italian cars either, having had a Ferrari 328GTS in her garage.

Now she’ll also have a limited edition Maserati Grecale in her name and there will be only three real units of the new SUV. The Barbie Maserati Grecale is the result of an unconventional collaboration between the Italian sportscar maker and Mattel, the brand owners of Barbie.
