Bentley Continental GT

Bentley has unveiled the facelifted Continental GT and GTC Speed, now featuring a potent hybrid V-8 powertrain. Here’s an overview of the key updates and features:

Powertrain and Performance

  • Hybrid V-8 Powertrain: The new setup combines a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V-8 with an electric motor and an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission.
  • Total Output: The hybrid system produces a combined 779hp and 1,000Nm of torque, making it the most powerful Bentley yet.
  • Top Speed: The Continental GT Speed can reach a top speed of 335km/h, maintaining the performance legacy of its predecessor.
  • Battery and Electric Motor:
    • Battery: A 25.9-kilowatt-hour battery pack powers the electric motor.
    • Motor Output: The motor alone generates 187.4 hp and 450Nm of torque.
    • Electric Range: Capable of driving up to 80km on the European WLTP test cycle, the motor can independently drive the car up to 140km/h.
  • V-8 Engine Updates: New single-scroll turbochargers and a higher-pressure fuel injection system help the engine produce 592hp and 800Nm of torque.

Design and Interior

  • Exterior Changes:
    • Front Design: New single headlamps inspired by the Bacalar and Batur models, marking a shift from the twin headlamp design used since 2003.
    • Rear Design: Updated, intricately detailed taillights.
  • Interior: Maintains the luxurious feel Bentley is known for, with high-end materials and craftsmanship.
  • The 20-way adjustable seats in the Continental GT have long set industry standards in comfort and refinement. New interior features include the optional Wellness seating with Postural Adjust and Auto Climate to the front seats, minimising fatigue and providing a level of relaxation that is truly unique.
  • The new Dark Chrome Specification provides a more contemporary aesthetic and gives a more understated character to the cabin. This applies to door handles, switches, speak grilles and many other areas around the cabin. Bentley’s bespoke division – Mulliner – will also be offering a collection of unique features enabling further personalisation to the latest model.

  • A choice of three audio systems is offered in the Continental GT. The standard system features 10 speakers and 650 Watts, while a Bang & Olufsen 1,500 W, 16-speaker system with illuminated speaker grilles is aimed at lifestyle-oriented customers. A Naim 2,200 W, 18-speaker system with Active Bass Transducers built into the front seats and eight sound modes is offered for the true audiophile. Laminated acoustic glass is retained for the windscreen and side windows, resulting in a nine-decibel reduction in exterior noise versus non-acoustic glazing.
  • The new Continental GT continues to feature the innovative Bentley Rotating Display – the three-sided display featuring a 12.3” high-definition display, three elegant analogue dials, and an unbroken side of handcrafted veneer. The three sides are selectable at the touch of a button.

Hardware and Handling

  • Dampers and Air Springs: New twin-valve dampers allow for individual adjustments of compression and rebound, paired with two-chamber air springs.
  • Weight Distribution: For the first time, the Continental GT features a rear-biased weight distribution (49:51 front-rear split), aided by the rear-mounted battery.
  • Additional Features:
    • Rear-wheel steering and active anti-roll bars enhance handling and comfort.

Convertible Version

  • Continental GTC Speed:
    • Top Speed: Limited to 284km/h.
    • Acceleration: 0-100km/h in 3.2 seconds, just a tenth slower than the coupe.

Production and Availability

  • Timeline: Production and deliveries of both the GT and GTC Speed will begin in the third quarter of this year at Bentley’s Crewe factory.

The new hybrid system promises to continue the Speed’s tradition of outstanding performance while introducing more efficiency and modern technology to Bentley’s iconic grand tourer.

These Edition 8 models boast a Blackline specification exterior, striking 22” wheels, Comfort Specification seats, Bentley’s Rotating Display, contrast stitching, and self-levelling wheel badges. Edition 8 badging is prominent on the fenders of the Continental GT and Continental GTC, while it is located on the D Pillar of the Flying Spur. Inside, the Edition 8 motif is embroidered on the seat backs and engraved on the treadplates.

North American customers will have the opportunity to own one of the last, most opulent 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 models with the Edition 8 badge, as production shifts towards hybrid variants as part of Bentley’s Beyond100 strategy. While the current engine will continue in the Bentayga family, the Continental and Flying Spur ranges will transition to hybrid models by 2024.

The V8 engine has been a cornerstone of Bentley’s heritage for 75 years, evolving from the first L-Series V8 in 1959 to today’s current-generation powerhouse. Since its introduction in 2012, over 53,000 V8-powered Continental GT, GTC, and Flying Spur examples have been handcrafted at Bentley’s Dream Factory in Crewe, England.

Bentley Motorsport is contesting a specially prepared Continental GT at the 2020 GP Ice Race in the Austrian town of Zell am See this weekend. Following on the British brand’s history of setting Ice Speed Records in 2007 and 2011, the W12-powered Continental GT is ready to continue Bentley’s heritage of high performance on ice at the spectacular showcase event.

The Ice Race Continental GT will be running in livery that pays homage to its record-breaking compatriot from the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in 2019 and shares the same factory-built W12 twin-turbocharged TSI engine.

Bentley Continental GT

The 6.0-litre unit delivers 635 ps/900 Nm and is claimed to be able to go from standstill to 100 km/h in 3 seconds, and then on to a top speed of 333 km/h. The car’s 3-chamber air springs, 48V active anti-roll control system and iron brakes are entrusted with keeping the car running at its best on the purpose-built ice track.

Junior World Rally Championship driver Catie Munnings will be at the wheel of the Continental GT in Zell am See. The FIA European Rally Championship Ladies Trophy winner, former host of the CBeebies television programme ‘Catie’s Amazing Machines’ and daughter of a former rally driver, will be the first female driver of the modern era to competitively race for Bentley Motorsport.

“The opportunity to race with Bentley at Zell am See is one that I couldn’t miss. I’m completely blown away by the car, and I actually still can’t believe I’m getting let loose in a Bentley to do an ice race. I spent some time on ice in the car just before Christmas. At first, I thought it would feel heavy, but I was amazed by how dynamic, nimble and responsive it is. It can dance like a lightweight rally car, and I can’t wait to race it at such an iconic event,” she said earlier in the week.

The car has been kept as close to production standard as possible, with minimal changes for safety compliance including a rear roll cage, on-board fire suppression system, racing seats and harnesses. Modifications beyond standard include an increase to the nominal ride height to give greater ground clearance, arch extensions to accommodate a 15 mm increase in track width, studded Pirelli Scorpion Ice Zero2 tyres, a row of Lazer high-performance lights, and a custom exhaust system from Akrapovic. The roof has a bespoke rack, fitted with a pair of Bomber for Bentley Centenary Edition skis.

Consisting of two days of motorsport in unpredictable conditions, the GP Ice Race was first run in 1937 and revived last year. The event features an array of historic and modern race and rallycars. Entrants compete in various vehicle categories over a 600-metre frozen racetrack carved from the snow, and involves two tests – standard racing, and an exhibition of skijoring. Skijoring is a competition whereby a skier is towed by a car over a track of snow and ice, and dates back to the Olympic Winter Games 1928 in St. Moritz, when skiers were drawn by riderless horses.

More on The New Bentley Continental GT

At the heart of the new Continental GT sits an all-new, enhanced version of Bentley’s renowned 6.0-litre, twin-turbocharged W12 TSI engine, mated, for the first time, to a dual-clutch eight-speed transmission, for faster, more efficient gear change.

A new, technically advanced, adaptive chassis uses Bentley’s intelligent 48-volt Dynamic Ride System to ensure a responsive ride and exceptional handling and refinement in all road conditions. The new system controls ride comfort and lateral roll, cushioning passengers from excessive movement, as well as making the car feel effortlessly precise.

The muscular exterior design, created using revolutionary technology, results in a lightweight, yet stiff body. The engine is positioned further back to improve weight distribution, resulting in driver focused, dynamic performance.

Offering four seats and improved luggage capacity for genuine real-world usability, the new Bentley Continental GT’s luxurious cabin is packed with exquisite details including a new ‘diamond in diamond’ leather design. In addition, significant work has gone into harmonising the extensive portfolio of 15 colours across hides and carpets.

The new Continental GT also showcases major evolutions in Bentley’s unique application of technology. An advanced, fully digital, driver-focused instrument panel and Bentley Rotating Display for the driver are among the suite of innovations. The latter features an impressive 12.3” touchscreen housed in a three-sided unit, which revolves the veneer to reveal the touchscreen, as well as three elegant analogue dials.

The interior design of the Continental GT is tailored specifically to the modern luxury customer, with unrivalled attention to detail that creates an effortless ownership experience. The cabin seamlessly integrates cutting-edge onboard technology with the finest handcrafted natural materials. The result is an exquisite, harmonised, connected and luxurious space.

Bentley Motors has teamed up with Breitling to create a watch that pays homage to the new Continental GT that was launched at IAA 2017 in Frankfurt. Called the Bentley GT Dark Sapphire Edition chronograph watch, the timepiece has been released to celebrate the launch of Bentley’s new sports car.

Despite sporting similar styling as its predecessor, the Continental GT has been reworked to have more elegant contours, better luxury materials and powered by the third generation 6.0-litre W12 TSI engine that develops 635bhp and 900Nm of torque, but I digress.

This new chronograph features an ultra-light, ultra-strong case made of Breitlight®. its a proprietary new advanced material that mirrors the innovative, authentic new luxury materials inside the Bentley Continental GT.

It is supposed to be resistant to scratches and corrosion, which should alleviate the concerns of owners who enjoy an active lifestyle. Apart from that, It does not contain magnetic or allergenic properties and has a subtle black, streaked effect.

The 48mm diameter watch face encompasses a movement that is developed in the Swiss brand’s Chronométrie workshops and is distinguished by the unique 30-second chronograph system, which is protected by cambered sapphire crystal and glare-proofed on both sides.

It is a Breitling Calibre B06 movement that is self-winding, high-frequency (28,800 vibrations per hour), 47 jewels. Power resever is rated at over 70 hours and the timepiece itself is officially chronometer-certified by the COSC.

A carbon fibre-like weave that adorns the outer part of the watch face provides depth to the dark gunmetal appearance of the watch body. The blue and white contrasting markings also add to the appeal of this chronograph timepiece.

A central hand completes a full sweep of the dial in 30 seconds, and features a A blue ‘30-second chronograph’ inscription on that particular dial. This is a noteworthy feature for those who will use this luxury timepiece as a stopwatch.

Breitling has given the watch a unique rubber strap bearing the same design as the Continental GT’s dial that is secured in place with a push piece-operated folding clasp. This should keep the watch firmly placed on the wearer’s hand yet offer a comfortable fit.

According to the watchmaker, only 500 such timepieces will ever be made, which is a nod to the level of exclusivity enjoyed by the car that it pays tribute to. Check out the pictures and let us know what you think of this elegant, hand-made Bentley timepiece.
