Chery kini bersiap sedia untuk mengembangkan barisan Tiggo 5 dengan kemunculan model baharu dikenali sebagai Tiggo 5 Pro, sebuah SUV kompak yang membawa pendekatan reka bentuk berbeza berbanding Tiggo 5x yang dipasarkan di China ketika ini. Walaupun kedua-duanya berada dalam keluarga yang sama, Tiggo 5 Pro tampil dengan dimensi lebih besar serta gaya yang lebih matang, sambil mengekalkan konfigurasi enjin petrol.

Dari segi saiz, Tiggo 5 Pro berukuran 4,540 mm panjang dan 1,835 mm lebar, menjadikannya lebih panjang dan sedikit lebih lebar daripada kedua-dua varian Tiggo 5x sedia ada, yang masing-masing berukuran 4,400 mm atau 4,358 mm panjang dengan lebar 1,830 mm. Meskipun demikian, ketiga-tiga model berkongsi jarak roda sama iaitu 2,630 mm. Ketinggian Pro pula ialah 1,588 mm, sepadan dengan salah satu varian Tiggo 5x, memastikan kedudukan tubuh yang serupa walaupun reka bentuknya lebih memanjang.

Perubahan paling ketara terletak pada penampilan luaran. Tiggo 5 Pro memperkenalkan bahasa reka bentuk baharu yang khusus untuk model ini. Bahagian hadapan tertutup—suatu ciri yang jarang dilihat pada SUV petrol—memberikan identiti unik, digandingkan dengan garis permukaan yang lebih tajam dan lampu hadapan yang kurus.

Chery is preparing to expand its Tiggo 5 family with a brand-new model called the Tiggo 5 Pro, a compact SUV that takes a different design direction from the current Tiggo 5x sold in China. While the Tiggo 5 series has so far consisted of the two Tiggo 5x variants, the Pro arrives with a noticeably larger footprint and a fresh look, even though it remains a petrol-powered model.

The Tiggo 5 Pro stretches to 4540 mm in length and 1835 mm in width, making it longer and slightly wider than both existing Tiggo 5x versions, which measure either 4400 mm or 4358 mm long, with both sharing the same 1830 mm width. All three models, however, sit on an identical 2630 mm wheelbase. Its height matches one of the current Tiggo 5x versions at 1588 mm, giving it a similar stance despite its extended body.

What sets the Tiggo 5 Pro apart visually is its new design language, which Chery has reserved for this model. Most striking is the closed-off front end — an unusual choice for a petrol-powered SUV — paired with sharp surface lines and slim headlights. The designers have added a narrow rectangular grille in the middle and a polygonal lower grille that gives the car a layered, more expressive front profile. It’s a cleaner, more modern interpretation that moves away from the busier styling cues often seen on entry-level SUVs.

Selepas membincangkan tentang kelebihan teknologi hibrid ringan (HEV) Chery dalam artikel terdahulu, kini tiba masanya untuk kita meneroka satu lagi inovasi menarik daripada jenama automotif ini — teknologi Chery Super Hybrid (CSH) Kenderaan Elektrik Plug-in Hibrid (PHEV).

Bagi mereka yang mahukan pemanduan elektrik tetapi masih inginkan fleksibiliti enjin petrol untuk perjalanan jauh, sistem PHEV ini merupakan penyelesaian terbaik. Bateri ini bukan sekadar tahan lasak di atas kertas — Chery turut membuktikannya melalui pelbagai ujian ekstrem, termasuk direndam dalam air laut sedalam satu meter selama lebih 53 jam, kemudian dipasang semula ke dalam Tiggo 8 PHEV dan masih berfungsi seperti biasa.

Bukan itu sahaja, bateri ini juga berjaya melepasi ujian jatuhan setinggi 15 kaki dan mampu menahan haba sehingga 95°C, menunjukkan tahap keselamatan dan ketahanan yang tinggi.

Dengan tenaga elektrik sepenuhnya, PHEV Chery boleh bergerak sejauh 90km, cukup untuk kegunaan harian bandar tanpa menyalakan enjin petrol langsung. Dan apabila kedua-dua kuasa — elektrik dan petrol — digabungkan, ia memberikan jarak perjalanan keseluruhan mencecah 1,200km, menjadikan pemanduan jarak jauh lebih yakin tanpa risau kehabisan tenaga.

Pengecasan Pantas dan Praktikal

Dari segi pengecasan, bateri Chery PHEV menyokong pengecasan pantas DC sehingga 40kW dan pengecasan AC 6.6kW. Ini membolehkan pengecasan dari 30% ke 80% hanya dalam masa kurang 20 minit menggunakan pengecas pantas, manakala pengecas biasa mengambil masa sekitar tiga jam.

Ciri ini memberi kemudahan kepada pengguna yang sibuk — sama ada di rumah, pejabat atau stesen pengecas awam — tanpa perlu menunggu lama.

Kuasa dan Kecekapan yang Seimbang

Walaupun tumpuan utama adalah kecekapan, Chery tidak mengetepikan aspek prestasi. Exploring Chery’s PHEV models

In a previous article, we explored the benefits of Chery’s HEV technology, stating that it offered benefits such as improved fuel efficiency, performance and even a smoother ride.

But we understand that there are some who don’t mind the plugged-in life but need an engine to sometimes go further. Chery has a solution for that too and it is known as the Chery Super Hybrid (CSH) Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV). 

Two PHEV models were launched recently, the Tiggo 7 PHEV and the Tiggo 8 PHEV. And both offer gargantuan power with impressive range, up to 1200km to be precise. 

So what makes PHEV’s by Chery so efficient? 

It is the result of a large battery, powerful tri-motors, self-charging capability and the ability to plug in to an external source for recharging. 

Powering Chery PHEV’s is a 18.3kWh LFP battery that is IP68 certified for overall durability. 

Interestingly, Chery has been rather keen to showcase its durability. The battery is already known to be dust and water resistant, and it is also well known that it can withstand up to 95 degrees Celsius of heat, but in a display of durability, Chery also submerged the battery in a metre-deep tank of seawater for over 53 hours. 

After that, it was removed from the tank, cleaned out and reinstalled into a Tiggo 8 PHEV and voila, it still worked. 

But that’s not the only test it has survived, Chery has been overtly keen to show the toughness of its LFP batteries, and it has withstood everything the company has thrown at it, seven-car stack test and 15 foot vertical drop included. 

The battery is obviously at the centre of the car’s capabilities

And rightfully so because it provides for an all-electric range of up to 90km, making the Tiggo 7 and Tiggo 8 PHEV models incredibly efficient. 

In fact, as mentioned before, both models have a claimed combined range of up to 1200km. So yes, the battery is very much the heart of Chery’s CSH package. 

As for recharging, the battery can accept up to 40kW of DC charge and 6.6kW of AC charge. The former will charge up the car from 30-80% state of charge in under 20 minutes, while the latter will take three hours. 

This is true for both the Tiggo 7 and the Tiggo 8 PHEV models. 

What are some of the other benefits of PHEV models?

Power, a lot of it, is one of the other benefits of a PHEV model. Though efficiency is the keyword here, but power can’t be ignored. 

Both the Tiggo 7 and Tiggo 8 PHEV’s are powered by a 1.5-litre, turbocharged engine making 143PS and 215Nm. 

This is then combined with an electric motor that makes 204PS and 310Nm by itself. Total system output is rated at 275PS and 365Nm of torque. 

The engine mostly works as a range extender and recharge the battery when it is depleted while on the move. But when needed, the engine works concurrently with the motor to provide forward propulsion. 

What is rather impressive here is that Chery claims a 98% mechanical efficiency for its Dedicated Hybrid Transmission. If you are wondering what that means, well that simply means that very little power is loss to friction or other “parasitic” losses. So what the engine and motor produce, the wheels get 98% of.  

Who will benefit from Chery’s PHEV models? 

Just about everyone in fact. If you spend time in traffic during work hours, you will appreciate the all-electric capabilities that the Tiggo 7 and Tiggo 8 PHEV have to offer. 

If you travel a lot on highways and don’t want to be stuck to a charger, you will also appreciate the fact that the engine can recharge the batteries, as can the regenerative braking system. 

So, after a while of driving on the highway, the battery would have gained some percentage of charge so you don’t always have to look out for a charger to enjoy the benefits of the PHEV powertrain. 

There is a lot to appreciate about Chery’s PHEV systems, so if you are keen on a car that is efficient and powerful yet comfortable for the family, then Chery’s HEV and PHEV models make a lot of sense.

Chery has officially unveiled the 2026 Tiggo 8, marking the fifth generation of its popular SUV nameplate. The new model, launched in China, introduces a bolder design language, upgraded technology, and a more refined driving experience, reaffirming Chery’s commitment to innovation in the mid-size SUV segment. The Tiggo 8 is now available in four variants, priced between 99,900 and 129,900 yuan (around RM65,000 to RM85,000), and is positioned as a premium, family-oriented five-seater.

From the outside, the new Tiggo 8 stands out with its fresh interpretation of Chery’s large-family design philosophy. Buyers can choose between two distinct front-end looks — the “Tiger” and the “Leopard.” Both share an assertive presence, featuring split-type matrix LED headlights and bold grille designs. The Tiger adopts a tooth-edged motif, while the Leopard’s grille features sharp, blade-like elements. Generous use of chrome accents further enhances the SUV’s premium appeal.

Along the sides, the “Hunting Shadow” body design introduces a dynamic and streamlined profile, accentuated by blacked-out wheel arches, roof pillars, and chrome window surrounds that give it a sporty yet elegant appearance. At the rear, a full-width LED light bar and large “CHERY” lettering give the SUV a strong visual identity.

Inside, Chery has given the Tiggo 8 a complete makeover with two distinctive cabin themes — the “Dawn Forest Wrap” for the Tiger and the “Galaxy Jungle Dynamic” for the Leopard. Both variants feature large digital displays, including a 15.6-inch infotainment screen paired with a 13.2-inch secondary display and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster.

Chery kini bersiap sedia untuk memperkenalkan SUV terbaharunya, iCaur V27, pada 21 November ini di Pameran Auto Guangzhou. Model yang dikenali sebagai iCar V27 di pasaran China ini akan menggunakan nama iCaur bagi pasaran luar negara. Ia bakal menjadi SUV terbesar dan paling canggih dalam barisan model iCaur, menggunakan sistem hibrid jarak jauh (range-extender hybrid) berbanding sistem elektrik sepenuhnya.

Dari segi rekaan, iCaur V27 menampilkan gaya kotak yang tegap dan moden, menggabungkan elemen gaya bandar dan ketahanan luar jalan. Ia hadir dengan bampar besar, lengkung roda lebar, serta tayar simpanan di bahagian belakang, menyerlahkan identiti lasak dan berani. Dimensinya berukuran 4,909 mm panjang, 1,976 mm lebar dan 1,894 mm tinggi, dengan jarak antara roda 2,910 mm — cukup besar untuk menawarkan ruang dalaman luas dan kehadiran jalan yang kukuh.

Bahagian dalaman masih belum diperincikan, namun varian tertinggi dijangka dilengkapi dengan ciri bantuan pemanduan lanjutan, termasuk sistem lidar yang dikuasakan oleh cip Horizon Robotics, membolehkannya mencapai keupayaan pemanduan separa autonomi.

Chery Automobile is gearing up to unveil its latest model under the new box-style SUV sub-brand, iCaur, with the official debut of the iCaur V27 scheduled for 21 November at the Guangzhou Auto Show. Known domestically in China as the iCar V27, the model adopts the “iCaur” name for international markets due to trademark considerations. Positioned above the smaller iCaur V23, the new V27 takes the lead as the brand’s largest and most advanced model, powered by a range-extender electric powertrain rather than a fully electric setup.

The iCaur V27 strikes a balance between modern sophistication and retro-inspired toughness. Its boxy silhouette, chunky bumpers, flared wheel arches, and rear-mounted spare tyre give it the kind of rugged, adventure-ready stance reminiscent of classic off-road icons.

Yet, the execution is thoroughly modern, with clean lines and thoughtful detailing that bring a premium, contemporary touch. Measuring 4,909 mm long, 1,976 mm wide, and 1,894 mm tall, and riding on a 2,910 mm wheelbase, the V27 falls into the mid-to-large SUV segment, suggesting ample cabin space and strong road presence.

Chery has yet to reveal the V27’s interior, but based on current information, higher-spec variants are expected to feature a lidar-based driver assistance system powered by Horizon Robotics chips, hinting at an advanced suite of semi-autonomous driving capabilities.

And why they are becoming increasingly popular.

With price of just about everything going upwards, car buyers and owners like you and I are increasingly aware of how much money we spend filling up our fuel tanks. 

Gone are the days of cheap petrol, and I will bet a silver coin that those days will never return. 

So now the big question on everyone’s minds is – how do we extract as much as possible from every Ringgit. 

If you are at the grocery store, it will be easy to maximise value by simply picking the cheaper option, i.e., local produce over imported ones. 

But with a car, it is not that straight forward. 

Some have opted for electric vehicles to save on their fuel bills. But that is not a practical solution for everyone because of the mismatch between charging times and infrastructure against their own lifestyles. 

As such, some are turning to hybrids and rightfully so. Hybrids offer the ideal middle ground between fuel efficiency and lifestyle requirements.

There are two types of hybrid systems that are becoming increasingly popular these days and those are your regular hybrid powertrains as well as plug-in hybrids. 

However, not all car makers offer these options, it is quite rare to have a car maker to offer hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains at the same time. 

Chery however is not your regular car maker. 

The Chinese car making giant prefers to give its buyers the true power of choice. While some car makers shy away from offering too many options for fear of sales cannibalisation, Chery offers what its consumers want. 

So, what does Chery have to offer? 

Chery has been putting out hybrid powertrains since 2008 but beyond the experience the company has, it has also dedicated thousands of engineers as well as dozens of facilities to creating hybrid technology. 

Chery’s hybrid technology is divided into two systems; hybrid electric vehicles, such as the Chery Tiggo Cross Hybrid and on the other side of that is the plug-in hybrid systems, such as the one found in the recently launched Tiggo 7 PHEV and Tiggo 8 PHEV. 

What is a Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV)?

Simply put, a HEV is a hybrid car with an electric motor, battery and an engine but without the plug-in capabilities. 

This gives you benefits such as improved fuel efficiency thus better range, and the joy of immediate electric power as well. 

The benefit of this system is that you don’t ever have to worry about plugging into a charger and you can drive around as you usually would. 

While this is true for all hybrid systems out there, Chery’s HEV system stands out with its advanced engineering. 

The number one factor that helps it stand out from the rest is its thermal efficiency, rated at an impressive 44.5%, among the best in the industry. 

Thermal efficiency is important for hybrid vehicles because it helps the engine extract more energy from a given amount of fuel. This directly reduces fuel consumption and maximises range. 

In Malaysia, the Chery Tiggo Cross Hybrid has made quite a name for itself as being one of the most efficient B-segment SUV. 

With it’s 1.5-litre, four-cylinder, naturally-aspirated engine making 102PS and 125Nm of torque, it is mated to dual electric motors that put out a combined 204PS and 310Nm of torque. 

This gives the car a sprightly, energetic feel every time you tickle the throttle, a trait you usually find in an electric vehicle. 

The other benefit to that is the electric range that you get courtesy of the 1.8kWh battery. 

Chery does not provide official figures for the all-electric range, but having driven the car, this writer can say that it is good enough to go about a small parking lot without awakening the engine. 

This also means that you get improved fuel consumption benefits, with official figures putting it at 5.4-litres per 100km or 19km per litre. But during a drive back from Terengganu in the Tiggo Cross Hybrid, we saw an astonishing figure of 3.6-litres per 100km. 

The other benefit of Chery’s HEV system is an ultra-smooth ride. This is the hallmark of Chery’s innovative Direct Hybrid Transmission, or sometimes known as the electronic CVT. 

This transmission system is known as a transmission by name only because there are no rotating gears in the traditional sense. 

Instead, power is sent directly to the wheels, and because there are fewer moving parts, you get to enjoy a smooth, vibration free drive quality. 

And this also contributes to the immediate power delivery we were talking about earlier as you don’t have to wait for the gears to shift. 

Final thoughts?

An HEV suits those who want some of the convenience of an electric vehicle without the associated disadvantages. Fuel consumption is better than regular ICE cars and so is performance. 

Data suggests that more people are flocking to HEV’s now than ever before as fuel prices soar. 

But what if you didn’t mind plugging in but still want an engine to take you further? That is where plug-in hybrid systems come in and we will explore that in a separate, upcoming article.
