In a highly anticipated move, MG enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting the unveiling of the third-generation MG3 at the upcoming Geneva International Motor Show on February 26, 2024. The glimpses already shared have ignited conversations among brand loyalists, creating a buzz of excitement leading up to the official reveal next month.

The design of the MG3 takes cues from MG’s more upscale models, notably the MG Cyberster sports car, evident in the sleek, swept-back headlights and streamlined bodywork. The front end of the MG3 exudes aggression with a sharp nose and intricate bonnet. A departure from tradition, the absence of a traditional grille is compensated by a bumper featuring a large intake, flanked by aerodynamic elements that enhance its sporty appeal. The rear showcases horizontal taillights and a dynamic bumper design, completing the contemporary aesthetic.

Inside, the MG3 is expected to undergo a modern revamp, potentially featuring a sizable 10.25-inch infotainment system reminiscent of the MG4.

Under the hood, the 2024 MG3 is poised to feature a hybrid powertrain, marrying a 1.5-litre petrol engine with a 2.1kWh lithium-ion battery and an electric motor, resulting in a robust total output of 174hp. This hybrid setup not only offers an eco-friendly alternative but also aligns with MG’s commitment to providing affordable vehicles.

For the entry-level models, a relatively milder 89kW 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine is expected to power the MG3, catering to a diverse range of consumers with varying performance preferences.

In an interesting move, the new MG3 is rumoured to introduce autonomous emergency braking, although it’s projected not to achieve a five-star ANCAP rating under the 2023-2025 protocol. This strategic decision aligns with MG’s overarching goal of offering some of the most competitively priced cars in their respective segments.

As MG enthusiasts count down the days to the Geneva International Motor Show, the forthcoming reveal of the third-generation MG3 promises a blend of sleek design, cutting-edge technology, and a hybrid powertrain, reinforcing MG’s position as a key player in the automotive industry.

On another note, the company is reportedly making a significant and speedy return to our market, according to rising speculations and spy photos showing certain EV vehicles testing in Malaysia!

In a significant triumph for MG, a brand that is making a strong comeback into our market soon, the MG4 Electric secured the Fully Charged award for the best electric vehicle (EV) under €40,000 (RM200k) last Friday night at the RAI in Amsterdam. The award ceremony, part of the Fully Charged LIVE Europe event, witnessed thousands of electric vehicle enthusiasts casting their votes in various categories.

The MG4 Electric emerged victorious in its category, surpassing eight other nominees, including the Dacia Spring Electric 65 Extreme, Fiat 500e Hatchback 42kW, Jeep Avenger Electric, and Volvo EX30 Single Motor. This accolade further solidifies the MG4 Electric’s success among EV drivers.

Since its launch in 2022, the MG4 Electric has achieved remarkable success, with over 62,000 sales in Europe, making it one of MG’s best-selling models in the region, particularly in the Netherlands. The recent award adds to the EV’s achievements, which include receiving five stars in the Euro NCAP safety test and contributing to a sales record for MG.

The Fully Charged AWARDS, designed as ‘Consumer Choice’ awards for clean energy and electric vehicles, made their debut this year during the Fully Charged LIVE Europe event. The event, powered by green technology pioneer myenergi, gathered leaders and pioneers from the electrification sector to celebrate the ongoing transition to electric vehicles, renewables, and smart homes.

Nominees for the awards were selected through a comprehensive survey of the Fully Charged SHOW audience. A panel of 15 energy and transport experts then finalised the candidates before the winners were chosen in each of the 15 categories. MG claimed the title of the best EV under €40,000 (RM200k) for the MG4 Electric model.

The Standard Range base SE comes with a 50.8kWh battery, offering 350km of range, 168bhp, and 249Nm ft of torque, all for a starting price of £26,995 (RM160k). The two big battery versions include the SE Long Range and Trophy Long Range.

For an additional £2,500 (RM14k), the SE Long Range provides a 61.7kWh battery, extending the WLTP range to 452km. It boasts 201bhp and the same torque figure, but due to the battery’s weight, it’s slightly slower to 100km/h (7.9 seconds compared to 7.7 seconds).

The Trophy model is distinguished by additional equipment and body styling, featuring a doubled-up rear spoiler. It offers slightly less range than the SE Long Range at 434km, attributed to the drag from the distinctive spoiler and the weight of extra kit.

(more…)

Depending on your age, you may or may not have heard of the MG brand. It is widely regarded as one of the most iconic automotive brands and has been around since the 1920s.

The British marque, arguably as iconic as Jaguar, was once known for its lightweight open-top two-wheel sports cars, and is one of a must have brand for any self-respecting classic car collector.

MG may be a classic brand and it was in Malaysia for many years even before independence, but these days the brand is no longer the same as what we know it.

MG is now owned by Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC), a Chinese state owned company, and has a strong presence in many markets. However, despite its popularity in markets such as Thailand, it has been absent from Malaysia.

Not for long though.

There have been spyshots of some EV models testing in Malaysia, and there are growing rumours that the brand is making a strong comeback into our market, and soon! (more…)

MG may sound like an old name and most Malaysians who do know of the brand might only have those old British sportscars in their minds. The MG brand is also no longer owned by a British company but by China’s SAIC since 2007.

The MG brand has actually been doing quite well in some markets and is sold in Thailand. It was supposed to come into Malaysia at one time but that has not happened yet. Perhaps we’ll see it soon with the wave of brands from China starting to sweep in.

MG’s modern products have been mainstream models but it is starting a new chapter with a high-performance electric sportscar. This is the Cyberster, just unveiled at Auto Shanghai in production form after the concept model was first shown two years ago at the same event.

MG Cars (the initials stood for Morris Garages) is often remembered, at least by the older generation, as a brand that produced some classic British sportscars. However, the company which was founded in 1924 was sold to Nanjing Automobile in 2005 and became known as MG Motor after Nanjing was merged with Shanghai Automobile Industry Corporation (SAIC).

While some British brands were acquired by other companies and faded away, MG continued to have a presence, even in the UK. It has a range of modern products today and like other carmakers operating in Europe, is preparing to move into the era of electrification.

Design study by studio in London
Having acquired many of MG’s assets in England from the MG Rover Group, the new owners continued activities there and even set up an advanced design studio in London in 2018. This facility has been developing future products and the latest design study it is showing the world is the MG MAZE. This concept car is electrically-powered, of course, and is aimed at the next generation of car users in cities.

A compact 2-seater capable with agility and functionality, its core focuses are high-technology and emotional design. The exterior features a transparent shell, emulating high end gaming PCs with exposed componentry. The outer surface is fluid and dynamic, exposing aspects of the chassis and interior design, that are otherwise hidden from view.

Mobility and gaming concept
Built around the theme of of ‘Get Out & Play’, the concept brings together mobility and gaming. The gaming aspect of the car reflects a desire to discover and reach new achievements, via a points-based reward system. The MAZE helps users to rediscover their city and their world by seeking exciting digital street art that is interacting with structures, buildings, and landmarks.

Inside the MAZE is a pair of floating seats and UX/UI technology developed to enhance the gaming aspect by giving a fun and enjoyable driving experience. The steering is controlled not by a steering wheel but by the driver’s smartphone… which will probably take some getting used to. But who knows – the next generation of drivers may be comfortable with a different form of control, just as today’s fighter pilots are fine using joystick controls as they grew up using them in computer games.

Connecting digital realm to physical one
“With MAZE, we wanted to consider what the future of a car community might look like, building from MG’s fan base and following. The move to digital is unstoppable, so we wanted to create a concept that connected this digital realm to the physical one that gives us the real joy in driving,” said Carl Gotham, Advanced Design Director.

“The concept is a reaction to our lives during recent months, where we have been met with restrictions and limitations on our ability to move around and interact. Exploring the idea of ‘mobile gaming’, we used MAZE as platform for people to get out and rediscover their environment in a new and relevant way, opening up new experiences with their city.”
