Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM), the official distributor of Mitsubishi vehicles in the country, is celebrating two decades of operations with the launch of an upgraded Triton Athlete. This latest iteration of the brand’s flagship pick-up truck combines refreshed styling with improved practicality, reinforcing its reputation for rugged reliability and dynamic performance.

The enhanced Triton Athlete arrives at a time when Mitsubishi Motors is marking 20 years of presence in the Malaysian market. As part of the celebrations, the company has rolled out a series of exclusive promotions and incentives for customers.

The Triton Athlete, now offered at a revised price of RM159,980 (on-the-road, without insurance, for Peninsular Malaysia), features several design and functional enhancements. These include a more aggressive front bumper garnish that accentuates its commanding presence, a new styling bar that adds to its muscular profile, and a tailgate assist function designed to make loading and unloading more effortless. A decorative body decal also gives the vehicle a distinctive and personalised appearance.

MMM has described the new Triton Athlete as a model that reflects its continued commitment to delivering high-quality, high-performance vehicles tailored to Malaysian drivers. The flagship pick-up has enjoyed sustained popularity in the market, with close to 120,000 units sold since its introduction. The model’s enduring appeal stems from its ability to combine SUV-like refinement with off-road capability and day-to-day usability.

Mitsubishi Motors, a junior partner of Nissan Motor, is reportedly considering staying out of the planned merger between Nissan and Honda Motor, according to sources cited by Reuters.

While Mitsubishi Motors plans to maintain its cooperative relationship with both automakers, the company aims to remain listed as an independent entity, three insiders revealed under the condition of anonymity.

The potential decision has impacted Mitsubishi Motors’ shares, which fell 3.9% by midday after an initial slump of over 6% during early trading on Friday. Shares of Nissan dropped by 0.7%, while Honda’s shares slipped 0.1%.

The merger between Nissan and Honda, announced last year, is projected to create the world’s third-largest auto group, boasting an annual output of 7.4 million vehicles. Mitsubishi Motors, in which Nissan holds a 24% stake, anticipated deciding by this month whether to join the tie-up.

Mitsubishi is finally taking the fight to the Ford Ranger and the Toyota Hilux, with the introduction of the sixth version of the Triton midsize truck, which has received a complete makeover for the first time in nine years.

A bigger emphasis is placed on comfort and safety, and the tough bodywork is bigger than before. Also “newly developed” are the ladder frame chassis, suspension, and a more powerful turbo-diesel engine.

Compared to its predecessor, the new Triton has a boxier and more robust appearance while keeping several essential Mitsubishi characteristics, such as the split headlamps and a understated refined version of Mitsubishi’s Dynamic Shield surround the wider grille at the front, which is the truck’s focal point.

After years of dismal sales in a market that is fast shifting to electric vehicles, Mitsubishi Motors has paused its China operations indefinitely and will lay off personnel.

According to a business document distributed on Chinese social media on Wednesday, the manufacturer said that its existing line-up had been negatively impacted by China’s switch to cleaner vehicles and that sales had fallen well short of projections.

The memo’s contents were validated by a representative of Mitsubishi’s regional partner Guangzhou Automobile Group. Both automakers stated that all parties were striving to “optimise the employee structure” and that they would do all possible to protect the affected employees’ legal rights.

The sixth-generation Mitsubishi Triton will be unveiled on July 26 in Thailand, and the Japanese automaker has released more information about it.

The prototype truck’s camouflage, which conceals some design elements, was modelled after lava rocks that are “packed with condensed energy.” Its sides are embellished with a logo of the 10-parallel-line Ralliart company, which has a rich history in motorsport.

According to Mitsubishi, in order to achieve safe, secure, and comfortable driving for all weather or road conditions, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) will use a newly developed ladder frame, chassis, and clean diesel engines in the all-new Triton one-ton pickup truck.

The newly developed ladder frame, double wishbone front and rear suspensions with leaf spring rear suspension are said to deliver the ideal driving performance and high levels of ride comfort. The newly created clean diesel turbo engine has significantly reduced friction loss while increasing output, which has improved environmental performance.

As part of the leader-follower structure of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, Mitsubishi is driving the development of the Triton, with the upcoming Nissan Navara planned to share platforms but feature different aesthetics.

The most recent Triton will be propelled by a freshly created clean turbo diesel engine, which is another powertrain-related detail that was made public. Executives have acknowledged that the technology is being studied for the Triton rather than being committed, despite the fact that plug-in hybrid power has been suggested for the new Mitsubishi pick-up. The manufacturer said it would follow the pure-electric pick-up it plans to debut after 2025 if it unveiled a Triton PHEV.

Malaysians probably remember the Mitsubishi Delica as a medium-sized van which was popular as a people-carrier before the MPV appeared. While it has been a medium-sized van for personal and commercial use during its 55-year history, the Delica has also had a little brother in the form of the Delica D:2 since 2011.

This was actually a Suzuki Solio which was sold under the Mitsubishi Motors brand and gave the carmaker something to offer in the mini MPV segment in Japan. It complemented the Delica D:5 which had been launched earlier and was popular as an all-purpose MPV.
