The all-new Proton X50 has officially taken the crown as Malaysia’s number one SUV. Launched on 24 July, the B-segment SUV impressed with its sharp design, modern features, and improved interior. In August alone, more than 4,000 units were sold, making it a clear leader in its class. A lot of interest has come from younger buyers, both online and in showrooms.

East Malaysia has played a big role in this success. Demand there is strong, and Proton has been preparing its after-sales support to keep up. The Regional Parts Centre in Kuching, Sarawak is now a key hub, ensuring parts reach dealers quickly — sometimes in just two days. The warehouse has expanded to 28,000 square feet, three times bigger than before, and can store stock for up to three and a half months. It also receives direct shipments from overseas, helping to keep supplies steady.

East Malaysia contributed 20.6% of Proton’s total sales in 2025, with market share growing to 19.5% from 19% last year. While the X50 is off to a strong start, the Proton Saga remains the best-seller in the region, with 13,619 units sold so far this year. The Persona and X50 follow behind.

Malaysia marked a major milestone in its automotive history with the launch of the nation’s first assembly plant dedicated exclusively to electric vehicle (EV) production. Prime Minister YAB Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim officiated the opening at Proton’s Tanjung Malim facility, located within the Automotive High Tech Valley (AHTV). Full-scale production begins this month, just seven months after the groundbreaking ceremony held on 7 February.

The Proton e.MAS 7, introduced in December last year and now regarded as Malaysia’s best-selling EV, will be the first model to be completely knocked down (CKD) and assembled at the plant. It will soon be followed by Proton’s second EV, the e.MAS 5. As part of Proton’s collaboration with Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, the facility will also assemble other premium marques under Geely’s portfolio, including Zeekr.

The event was attended by several key figures, including YAB Dato’ Seri Saarani bin Mohamad, Menteri Besar of Perak, Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry YB Tengku Datuk Seri Utama Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, Transport Minister YB Loke Siew Fook, and Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation YB Chang Lih Kang.

When Proton was founded in 1983, it was tasked with more than just producing a national car. The company was entrusted with the responsibility of driving Malaysia’s economic transformation from a resource-based economy into one focused on manufacturing. In the process, Proton also reshaped personal mobility, putting cars within reach of the rakyat while spreading skills, investments and industrialisation across the nation.

Forty-two years later, the national carmaker continues to play a pivotal role — not just in building cars, but in developing people. As the automotive industry undergoes its most profound transformation in history, Proton recognises that success no longer rests solely on manufacturing capability but on advanced technologies, global partnerships and the cultivation of a new generation of talent ready for electrification and beyond.

Malaysia, however, faces a challenge. Despite a 10 per cent increase in STEM enrolment over the past five years, there remains a shortage of skilled workers in critical areas such as Artificial Intelligence, digital literacy and green technologies. Proton sees this gap not as a hindrance but as an opportunity, positioning itself as a training ground for the next wave of industry leaders.
