Volvo’s Innovative Patent: Using Window Heaters to Improve EV Efficiency

Volvo may have uncovered a unique approach to enhancing electric vehicle (EV) efficiency—by using heaters to reduce aerodynamic drag. While traditional EVs are designed to conserve energy, heating systems typically come with a significant energy cost. Volvo’s new patent, however, suggests a novel application: heating the car’s outer surfaces, particularly the windows, to improve on-road efficiency.

The idea, discovered in a patent filing by Carmoses, involves warming the air around the vehicle by heating its outer skin. Warmer air is less dense, reducing the resistance—or drag—on the car as it moves. This seemingly small change can have a noticeable impact on energy consumption and, consequently, range.

The patent explains, “Heating a portion of the outer surface of the vehicle has the effect that a boundary layer of air adjacent to the heated surface is also warmed. Consequently, the density of the air in the boundary layer is reduced. Since drag is a function of the density of the air in this layer, heating the outer surface reduces drag and increases vehicle efficiency.”

Volvo Car Malaysia Opens Bookings for Locally Assembled EX30 Electric SUV

Volvo Car Malaysia has officially opened bookings for the locally assembled (CKD) Volvo EX30, following the overwhelming success of its fully imported (CBU) units launched in September 2024. The introduction of the EX30 underscores Volvo’s commitment to offering sustainable, safe, and innovative mobility solutions tailored to the Malaysian market.

The locally assembled Volvo EX30 Model Year 2025 (MY25) will be available in two variants: the Ultra and Ultra Twin Performance. Pricing starts at RM208,888 for the Ultra variant, while the Ultra Twin Performance variant is priced at RM228,888. Customers can choose from three stunning colours: Cloud Blue, Vapour Grey, and Crystal White. The first deliveries are expected in the second week of January 2025, making the EX30 an exciting addition to the growing electric vehicle market in Malaysia.

Volvo Car Malaysia telah melancarkan model Volvo EX30, yang merupakan salah satu kereta elektrik terkecil dan terpantas dalam barisan Volvo. Kini tersedia di Malaysia, EX30 menawarkan prestasi mengagumkan, teknologi termaju, dan reka bentuk mesra alam. Dengan tiga varian iaitu EX30 Plus, EX30 Ultra, dan EX30 Ultra Twin Performance, model ini menyediakan pilihan pemanduan yang sesuai untuk pelbagai keperluan pengguna.

EX30 Ultra Twin, varian paling berprestasi tinggi, mampu menghasilkan 428PS dan 543Nm tork, yang membolehkan pecutan dari 0 hingga 100km/j dalam hanya 3.6 saat. Sementara itu, varian motor tunggal Plus dan Ultra menghasilkan 272PS dan 343Nm tork, dengan pecutan 0-100km/j dalam 5.3 saat.

The Volvo EX30, is now available for purchase in Malaysia, offering a combination of cutting-edge technology, safety features, and sustainable design. Aimed at providing drivers with a personal and eco-friendly driving experience, the EX30 is designed for everyday moments and city life, while delivering impressive performance and style.

The EX30 sets a new standard for Volvo, boasting the fastest acceleration in the brand’s history. With three variants available in Malaysia – the EX30 Plus, EX30 Ultra, and the high-performance EX30 Ultra Twin – the car caters to a range of driving preferences. The top-of-the-line Ultra Twin variant delivers an impressive 428PS of power and 543Nm of torque, propelling the car from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.6 seconds. Meanwhile, the single-motor Plus and Ultra models offer 272PS and 343Nm of torque, achieving 0-100 km/h in a respectable 5.3 seconds.

All variants feature a 69 kWh NMC battery, providing a range of up to 476km for the single-motor versions and 450km for the dual-motor Ultra Twin. With 175 kW DC fast charging, the battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in just 28 minutes, ensuring minimal downtime.

Standard features across all models include LED headlights, 19-inch Diamond Cut alloy wheels, Pilot Assist, a Harman Kardon Premium Sound system, and a full suite of advanced driver assistance technologies. The Ultra variants further enhance the package with Park Pilot Assist, a 360° camera, powered front seats, and a panoramic sunroof.

As with all Volvo vehicles, safety is paramount. The EX30 comes equipped with the Safe Space Technology suite, which includes radars, ultrasonic sensors, and cameras to monitor the environment. The EX30 is the first Volvo to feature a Harman Kardon soundbar, inspired by home audio systems, for high-quality sound without taking up valuable space.
