PLUS is ready to accept toll payments using Touch ‘n Go’s RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) system from this Wednesday, January 1, 2020. However, the electronic transaction will only be available at its toll plazas which have an Open System. These are for highways where a fixed rate is paid instead of the Closed System which charges by the distance travelled.

Only Class 1 privately-registered vehicles (light vehicles with 2 axles and 3 or 4 wheels except taxis) will be able to use their RFID tag at these toll plazas on PLUS-operated highways:

  1. Jitra (North-South Expressway)
  2. Lunas (Butterworth-Kulim Expressway)
  3. Kubang Semang (Butterworth-Kulim Expressway)
  4. Penang Bridge
  5. Mambau (Seremban-Port Dickson Highway)
  6. Lukut (Seremban-Port Dickson Highway)
  7. Kempas (North-South Expressway)
  8. Perling (Linkedua highway)
  9. Lima Kedai (Linkedua highway)
  10. Tanjung Kupang (Linkedua highway)
Penang Bridge
Toll payment by RFID tags can also be made at the Penang Bridge from Wednesday.

“The Touch ‘n Go RFID system, which uses an RFID-fitted sticker connected to the Touch ‘n Go eWallet, is the latest payment option that is currently being offered. It enables highway customers to perform online top-ups, eliminating the need to top-up at the designated reload centres,” said PLUS Chief Operating Officer, Zakaria Ahmad Zabidi.

Existing payment options still available
He added that more payment options are being developed via debit and credit cards as well as other eWallets. “Soon highway customers will have the option to switch to more payment modes when these features become available in the very near future,” said Encik Zakaria while giving assurance that the existing toll payment modes via Touch ‘n Go card or SmartTAG are still available on PLUS highways.

Toll transactions using the RFID tag can be done at the remaining 83 toll plazas with the Closed System from April 1, 2020.

He also clarified that the current RFID system at the Sultan Iskandar Building Toll Plaza (JB Causeway) can only be used for Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) payments for Singapore-registered vehicles.

Whichever payment mode is used, highway travellers are reminded to ensure that the balance in their TnG tollcard or eWallet is sufficient to cover the toll charges. Besides the PLUS website, Waze also now provides information on the amount of toll that will be incurred on a chosen or recommended route.

Malaysian motorists can now find out toll charges on Waze

Paying toll to use highways is part of motoring life these days, an added cost to motoring which is supposedly for quicker travel from A to B. There are alternative routes where you don’t have to pay toll but they will be more congested and if time is valuable to you, then paying the toll might be better to avoid jams.

However, toll charges vary on the different highways operated by nine concessionaires and if you are travelling across the Klang Valley using their highways, you will have different charges to pay. If you want to save some money, you could check out the toll charges along your route and compare the rates. But this means visiting a few of the concessionaires’ websites to get the information which is troublesome.

Waze Toll Features

Toll Prices feature added
Now Waze makes it easier for you with the launch of its Toll Prices feature in Malaysia. One of its most requested features, Toll Prices will enable users to view and compare toll prices before or when they are driving along tolled routes. The feature, which is compatible with high-occupancy-vehicle (HOV) lanes, is automatically enabled and users will see a Toll tag on the route if it includes a toll road.

The Toll Prices feature will help drivers make better planning decisions by giving them visibility of prices ahead of time, enabling them to compare prices of different routes. At the same time, they can also compare the estimated times of arrival (ETAs) to see if the savings are worth it.

Waze

Info through efforts of Waze community
This hyperlocal feature is only possible due to the work of Waze’s volunteer community of over 30,000 monthly active map editors. The 6 volunteers from the Malaysian Waze community who played a part in this latest feature for Waze were Kadyus, Kweeheng, Rickylo103, EpailXi, Izuaniz and Lutfi_bihar. They helped collect and input toll price information, underscoring once again that Waze is truly people-powered and community-driven.

“We are delighted to bring Toll Prices to Malaysia. Thanks to the phenomenal efforts of our volunteer community, we’ve been able to make one of the most requested features on Waze a reality. Until now, Waze was trying to reduce your time spent in traffic – now, we’re also helping our users save as much money as possible by giving them the absolute best choice of routes, based both on ETA and potential costs of tolls along the way. We look forward to continue working with our community to make this feature available in all markets,” said Moriah Royz, Waze Product Manager.

Shell Lubricants Malaysia’s Shell Helix, has partnered with the mobile navigation app, Waze, to make driving home this festive season, a little bit safer. From 16 May to 15 July 2017, those using the Waze app will receive special alerts courtesy of Shell Helix about accident-prone areas during their travels.

So far, the partnership has identified 50 spots that are considered accident-prone areas. The app will infrom Waze users nearing said areas with an alert in the App, urging road users to be extra cautious while driving through these areas. This will lend a helping hand to road users and should some-what help relieve their worries while making the long journey home this festive season. According to Shell, the alerts should be displayed when the vehicle is ‘stationary to avoid any further distractions’.

Speaking of the newly added feature within Waze, Shell Lubricants Malaysia and Singapore, Marketing Manager Alex Lim, said, “This cooperation with Waze reflects our desire to take our commitment in road safety to the next level by engaging drivers in real-time. We are delighted to work with Shell Helix to launch this initiative that reminds drivers to stay extra safe. By reducing crashes, we also reduce traffic jams and this benefits everyone.”

As an added bonus this festive season, Shell will be offering a special oil change discount during the pre-peak travel period at selected Shell stations and Shell trade partners across the country. A unique promo code will be displayed in the Waze up, which the app user can use at said Shell outlets to redeem a RM30 discount on the cost of an oil change service at participating Shell Helix branded workshops and retail stations’ Lube Bay service outlets.

Shell’s initiatives this festive season should help reduce congestion and vehicle breakdowns as well as help Malaysians get to their destinations safely.
