On this day of March 12 in 1952, Daimler-Benz AG sent out preliminary technical information and a picture of the new Mercedes-Benz 300 SL sportscar undergoing testing on a public road. It was the first public appearance of the new racing sportscar and drew a great deal of interest.

Exactly 69 years later, Mercedes-AMG has sent out another press release – electronically this time rather than by postal mail – of a SL undergoing testing. This is the eighth generation of the model line and while the SL300 of the 1950s was tested along an autobahn which permitted very high speeds, the testing of this 21st century successor takes place away from public eyes at a closed course in Sweden.

The testing follows extensive development work on the Roadster, configured as a 2+2-seater, which took place in digital form. However, a certain amount of real-world development driving with prototypes is still essential. For instance, the final tuning of the fully variable all-wheel drive system 4MATIC+, which will now be offered for the first time in the SL as well, is being undertaken in snowy regions.

The redesigned fabric roof has also to be tested and prove itself able to meet the brand’s demanding conditions in the climate near the Arctic Circle. The handling dynamics of this iconic Roadster will also be undergoing final refinement, but this will be done on the north loop of the Nurburgring circuit (amongst other places). It is there, on the most challenging racing circuit in the world, the specialists from Mercedes-AMG will make sure the new SL, due for launch later this year, confirms its sporting roots.

Different variants of the Roadster will progressively be available, branded exclusively under the Mercedes-AMG name.


On March 12, 1952 (a Wednesday), Daimler-Benz revealed the 300 SL (W 194) for the first time. The media was able to see it on a stretch of autobahn near Stuttgart. Only a few weeks later, the brand began its participation in international motorsport with that sportscar. In 5 races the car entered, it had 4 victories. Responding to calls for a production version of the highly successful racing, Mercedes-Benz launched the 300 SL Coupe in 1954 in New York, and the SL line began.


Increased track testing for Mercedes-AMG Project ONE prototype

Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors (HSDM), the sole distributor of Hyundai vehicles, has announced that it will be launching two SUVs during 2021. One is the large-sized Palisade while the other is an updated version of the compact Kona model which was introduced in the Malaysian market last October.

The Palisade, which is 4980 mm long, is Hyundai’s flagship SUV with accommodation for up to 7 people on three rows of seats. Those who do not require the third row will find a generous extra volume of space available in the back with the row folded down.

The version of the Palisade imported will have an Atkinson-cycle 3.8-litre V6 with dual CVVT in the cylinder head and direct fuel-injection This petrol engine has around 291 bhp of power with up to 355 Nm of torque.

Aviation-inspired features
Taking inspiration from aviation technology, the Palisade’s features include a Head-Up Display (HUD) that projects operating information onto the windscreen in front of the driver. The display is generated as a reflection of a full-colour TFT LCD panel inside the top of the dashboard. The displayed information is said to be visible in all lighting conditions, even our bright tropical sunshine.

An industry-first is the innovative diffusers design for the ceiling vents. This provides a focused, partially-diffused or fully-diffused stream of air to the rear passengers. It reduces airflow noise and is draft-free while giving more uniform distribution of air as well as being able to direct cool air in specific areas.

Pricing for the Palisade is not known yet although it will be fairly high. The last time HSDM sold a model with a big engine was the 3.8-litre Genesis about 6 years ago and that cost almost RM400,000. The tax structure hasn’t changed and the only savings you could get would be on sales tax (and that too would only be until June 30, 2021).

New engine for Kona
As for the 2021 Kona, the new Smartstream G2.0 petrol engine with 149 ps/180 Nm will be introduced. The 4-cylinder engine is mated to a CVT transmission which delivers power to the front wheels; all-wheel drive will still not be available.

Updates for the 2021 model include  a more refined front fascia design, new 17-inch and 18-inch wheels, an enhanced SmartSense state-of-the-art safety package and a remote starting function. The new console area of the cabin now has a horizontal layout while the air vents and speakers also get new rings with aluminium finish.

Also included in the new version is upgraded ambient lighting technology that illuminates the cupholder and foot lamps on the front passenger and driver side. New interior colour options, materials and trims are also to be expected.

The Koan is presently priced between RM116,000 and RM144,000, and it’s likely that the 2021 model will be around the same range. There are currently two engines, one being a 1.6-litre Gamma turbo and the other is the old Nu engine which will be replaced.

The Palisade and updated Kona will be followed by other new models during the year, hinted Low Yuan Lung, HSDM’s Managing Director. “Other new models are also in the pipeline and bound to excite the market,” he said.

Scuderia Ferrari Mission Winnow’s SF21 racing car for this season of the Formula 1 World Championship has been revealed. It is the 67th to be built in Maranello to compete in the championship. An evolution of last year’s SF1000, as dictated by the regulations which require the use of the same chassis as in 2020, opportunities for change in many areas have been limited.

Some of the permitted areas where change has been made include the engine, which is completely new, and aerodynamic features as well as at the rear end, which is where the two development tokens allowed in the regulations have been used.

The new car features a subtle livery that is said to ‘look to the challenges of the future without forgetting the team’s roots and history’. “The rear end is reminiscent of the burgundy red of the very first Ferrari, the 125 S,” explained Team Principal Mattia Binotto. “But as it moves gradually towards the cockpit area, it transforms into the modern red that we have used in most recent years. This season presents us with many challenges and through this livery, visually, we reboot from our past and head into the future.”

Joint effort by all departments
Development of the new 065/6 power unit for the 2021 season saw a systematic approach adopted by all departments, which worked together to find every opportunity for improvement. “Along with our colleagues on the chassis side, we worked a lot on the layout of the power unit, to make the overall design of the car as efficient as possible. With the internal combustion engine, we focused on increasing its level of thermal efficiency, in conjunction with our partner Shell and this has produced an improvement in lap time that we estimate at over one tenth of a second,” said Enrico Gualtieri Head of the Power Unit department.

“We are also carrying out further development on the hybrid system and the electronics, in order to revise and optimise all components. All this in a season in which power unit test bench time has been reduced still further,” he added.

Head of the Chassis department, Enrico Cardile, said that when the SF21 project began, their first task was really to identify which area of the car to focus on in order to achieve a radical change. “We opted for the rear end, designing a new gearbox and new suspension system. This, in addition to the efforts of our power unit colleagues has led to a much tighter rear end,” he explained.

Pursuit of better aerodynamics
The engineers also looked at the cooling system, increasing the effectiveness of the central radiator and designed the body with more ‘downwashing’. Aerodynamics was one of the areas affected by the regulation changes aimed at reducing the ability to generate vertical load, in order not to put too great a strain on the tyres. “That’s why, as we began developing the car’s aerodynamics, we set ourselves two goals: recovering more aerodynamic downforce than was lost through the regulations and reducing drag,” Cardile revealed.

“Because of the regulations, less drastic changes were possible at the front end of the car. So, we developed a new front wing which works in conjunction with a new concept nose, but the chassis itself and the suspension is off last year’s SF1000,” he added.

The team will have its youngest driver line-up since 1968 with Charles Leclerc (below right) and Carlos Sainz, Jr. When the first race of the season takes place on March 28 in Bahrain, the pair’s average age will be 25 years and 3 days.

The drivers
Commenting on the drivers, Laurent Mekies, Racing Director, said: “There’s plenty of positive energy coming from our two drivers. Carlos has spent a lot of time in the factory and has integrated with the team very quickly. As for Charles, he is already perfectly at home with the team: he knows what he wants and is also very aware of the role he has in the team, both in and out of the car. Over the winter, we have witnessed the two guys getting on very well together and this can only be a good thing for the whole team.”

At official events, drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz Jr., along with Scuderia management, will wear a range of Giorgio Armani navy blue garments and accessories as the team has signed a multi-year partnership with Giorgio Armani S.p.A.

It’s often the case that when a model is in great demand, there will be people trying to use scams to mislead people who are eager to get the new vehicle quickly. According to Perodua, two scams have been detected since the launch of its new Ativa SUV on March 3.

“We have discovered at least two fraudulent rebate offers online for the newly-launched Perodua Ativa,” said Perodua President and CEO, Dato’ Zainal Abidin Ahmad, confirming that the promotions did not originate from Perodua or any of its outlets or authorised dealers nationwide.

According to Dato’ Zainal, some scammers have posed as Perodua sales advisors before and lured potential victims into placing their new car purchase deposits into personal bank accounts. Obviously, when making any payments, you should never pay to an individual’s account and always make payment to a company account. If you are suspicious, it is worth calling up the company to confirm the bank account details.

The Hyundai Motor Group (which includes Kia Motors) continues its new model onslaught with yet another model being previewed. This one’s a high-end MPV called the Staria which will be offered in selected markets and likely to be launched during this quarter.

The name comes from a combination of ‘star’ and ‘ria’ which is ‘a long narrow area of water formed when a river valley floods’ and is said to refer to ‘the vehicle’s future-oriented product values and streamlined design characteristics defined by one curve gesture silhouettes as well as clean and pure body volume’.

Dimensions are not given yet but the Staria is not a large MPV like the Starex and is a smaller model. The exterior is certainly futuristic and Hyundai suggests it resembles a spaceship. The front is highlighted by a long, horizontal daytime running light and headlamps positioned underneath.
