Nissan today unveiled to the world its new Navara pick-up, updating the current one which was introduced in 2014. As with its other pick-up models, the Navara benefits from over 80 years of experience making such vehicles which have become popular in many regions of the planet.

Described as the most advanced Navara yet, the new Navara comes with many best-in-class technologies, including an array of Nissan Intelligent Mobility features and safety systems. “We packaged the new model with a full set of advanced technologies to ensure enhanced dynamic performance on and off-road, as well as safety and comfort ushering in a new age of toughness, tech, and peace of mind,” said Ashwani Gupta, Nissan’s Chief Operating Officer.

Current Navara

While the familiar tough looks of the Navara continue, it has also been given a bolder appearance. The front end adopts carries the new ‘interlock’ grille – a unique feature found exclusively on the Nissan pickup family and first introduced on the latest Nissan Titan – which gives the impression that it is coming out and ‘grabbing’ the engine.

Distinctive LED headlamps
Besides the model name embossed on top of the grille and across the full width of the rear door panel, the Navara also has a segment-first all-new, high-tech C-shaped quad LED projector headlamps. Each of the four distinctive projector units have their own intricate bezel shape, giving a visual signature to the vehicle

Apart from adding a level of sophistication to the rugged design, they also provide greater illumination, which would definitely be appreciated when driving off-road or in bad weather. At the back, the LED tail lamps with their greater brightness also help improve safety as the vehicle’s presence will be more visible.

Body-on-frame construction
The new Navara continues to use body-on-frame construction, with the cabin and cargo bed being separate units that are bolted onto a strong chassis frame. This has been the traditional construction for pick-up trucks and also SUVs, although the latter have moved towards monocoque construction (like passenger cars) in recent times.

Body-on-frame construction is still regarded as being more suited for the sort of usage that the Navara would typically have. It not only copes better with rough terrain but can also handle heavy loads.  It has an increased payload capacity which Nissan says is the best in the 1-ton class.

There’s also a strengthened rear axle and additional truck bed volume (depending on region), as well as retuned suspension settings. An integrated step in the new rear bumper makes bed access easier and reduces fatigue caused by repeated loading and unloading. Additionally, the bed is equipped with a flap-type, tie-down hook to secure both large and small objects, making it easier for loading and unloading without interference.

New PRO-4X grade for the Navara comes with distinctive look with a black Nissan emblem, a black front bumper and black grille, door handles, roof racks and running boards accented by 17-inch black wheels and all-terrain tyres. It also has lively, orange-red accents, a tint inspired by the colour of magma, contrasted with the dark grille, wheels, and mirror caps.

Powertrains to be carried over
Nissan has not mentioned the powertrains that will be available but does say that there will be ‘carried-over powertrain options’. Thus it is likely that the YS engines will continue to be used, these being proven over a 10-year life. They are used by Alliance members in light commercial vehicles and for such vehicles, proven reliability is more important to customers than having new technologies.

The current engine line-up consists of a 2.5-litre petrol engine from the QR family and 2.3-litre turbodiesel engines, with 7-speed automatic and 6-speed manual transmissions. This will probably be the same for the new Navara although one cannot discount the downsizing trend which may see a smaller displacement engine being available for some markets.

Nissan Intelligent Mobility technologies
As in other new Nissan models, Nissan Intelligent Mobility (NIM) technologies are highlighted as the big thing in the new Navara. These are technologies which create a ‘360-degree safety shield’ for the vehicle, as well as helping the driver to avoid accidents.

NIM technologies include Intelligent Forward Collision Warning, Intelligent Emergency Braking, Lane Departure Warning as well as Intelligent Driver Alertness, which prompts drivers to take breaks through visual and gives audible alerts when changes in driving style or steering behaviour are detected.

Many vehicles now come with a display that shows a simulated overhead view so the driver can see all around when manoeuvring. The new Navara also has this, which is called the Intelligent Around View Monitor. However, NIM technologies add something else that enhances safety – Moving Object Detection. This helps drivers notice people and other vehicles surrounding or approaching the vehicle.

The system also features an off-road monitor, enabling the driver to observe surrounding obstacles at low speeds when in 4×4. This gives the driver more confidence when travelling over rough terrain and can help avoid damage to the bodywork.

Besides the rearview camera, there is also Rear Cross Traffic Alert which uses sensors to detect vehicles coming from either side when reversing out of a parking bay. This will be an especially useful feature for pick-up drivers as the vehicle is long, and will reduce the stress (as well as accidents).

The pickup also comes with new automatic safety and convenience features such as a rain-sensing wiper and a speed-sensing door lock that activates when the vehicle speed exceeds 25 km/h.

While driving, there is an Active Brake Limited Slip Differential system to improve grip and stability. It does this by managing power delivery and wheel braking between the front and rear axles and between the left and right of the vehicle. There’s also a Vehicle Dynamic Control system to help in keeping the car under control on slippery corners, and ABS to prevent wheel lock-up.

Added convenience and comfort
Inside, the new Navara gains added convenience and new features that are driver-oriented to make driving more enjoyable and comfortable. The rear seats are more comfortable, with upgrades to the seat cushions and back shapes. Interior quietness is also claimed to be significantly improved with increased amounts of sound deadening insulation and a laminated windshield and front windows.

The new Nissan Connect infotainment system meets the needs of modern travellers, providing Bluetooth streaming audio, voice recognition, and navigation. Everything is shown on an 8-inch screen, with a 7-inch higher resolution TFT screen complementing it. Besides having multiple USB ports throughout the vehicle for charging devices, there is also a Type-C USB port in the console, allowing more modern devices to be recharged.

Made in Thailand, Mexico and South Africa
For the ASEAN and Australian markets, the new Navara will be produced at Nissan’s plant in Thailand, which is also its strategic manufacturing and R&D hub for ASEAN. The first market to receive the new model will, not surprisingly, be Thailand which is the second largest truck market in the world. Other production hubs for the model will be in Mexico and South Africa, starting later on.

As Edaran Tan Chong Motor stopped assembling the model locally with the current generation, the new one should be available in Malaysia more quickly, probably in the first half of 2021. With local assembly, there’s a delay as local parts suppliers start up and the plant has to be prepared for the new model, not to mention the fact that the CKD kits from the overseas factory may also be available only at a later time.

If you prefer the current Navara, Edaran Tan Chong Motor should still be selling it for some time more. Viewing and test-drives are available at authorised Nissan showrooms and their locations can be found at www.nissan.com.my.

It used to be that the Golf GTI was the most powerful variant of the Golf range but these days, it is the R version that is eagerly awaited by enthusiasts, and Volkswagen has now revealed the one for the latest 8th generation Golf. As with its predecessor, there is again a boost in output from the engine which is the 2-litre turbocharged TSI unit.

The new figures are 315 bhp, about 9% higher than before, with torque increasing to 420 Nm. This gives a claimed 0 to 100 km/h capability of 4.7 seconds and a top speed that is over 250 km/h but restricted to that speed. Customers can choose from a 6-speed manual transmission or 7-speed DSG, depending on the market.

As before, there is Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel drive system to get all the power to the road through all four wheels. This is a newly developed torque vectoring system with selective wheel torque control on the rear axle, significantly increasing the car’s agility, particularly when cornering.

As a world first, the all-wheel drive system is also networked via a Vehicle Dynamics Manager with other running gear systems such the electronic differential locks and the DCC adaptive damping system. Thanks to this close integration of the different systems, the new Golf R offers optimal traction and neutral handling with precision.

Drift profile available
Among the choice of profiles to customise driving characteristics, there is also a Drift profile meant for track use (or private roads) only. When selected, the parameters for the ESC stability control (change to ESC Sport) and the distribution of power via the all-wheel drive system enable the Golf R to drift.

The car features a strut-type front and a multi-link rear suspension. Compared with its predecessor, the spring rates and anti-roll bar rates have both been increased by 10%. A new aluminium subframe helped to reduce the weight of the front suspension. The transverse link mounts and hub carriers on the rear suspension of the Golf R have also been modified.

Customized body design
Like all 8th generation Golf models, the R is a five-door model and has its own customized design and exclusive and sporty equipment. The new front bumper features a motorsport-style splitter and R-specific air intake grilles, with high-gloss black elements. At the top of the radiator grille is a blue crossbar which lights up as an LED strip as soon as the engine starts and stretches all the way into the fenders to act as the daytime running lights.

The distinctive features of the Golf R’s side design include 19-inch aluminium-alloy wheels (with blue brake calipers), exclusive side skirts, matte chrome exterior mirror caps that project the R logo onto the road when the doors are opened and closed, and lowered bodywork.

The rear bumper is also a unique design element which now incorporates a newly designed high-gloss black diffuser. It is framed at the sides by chrome-plated twin tailpipes for the standard sport exhaust system. A roof spoiler is included to generate downforce for stability at high speeds.

Digitalized interior layout
With the Mk 8 Golf, Volkswagen has digitalized many of the displays and controls. This has given more options for the driver to customise the instrument panel, along with the graphics on the 10-inch Discover Pro touchscreen display.

For better support and body restraint, the driver and front passenger sit in sport seats, with Nappa leather seating surfaces that feature carbon-look elements with blue accents in the side sections, as well as a blue R logo in the backrest.

The multifunction leather-wrapped sport steering wheel has also been given a specific design, with ergonomically shaped DSG paddles, blue contrast stitching, and an R button for direct selection of the various driving profiles. Like the other latest Golf variants, the Golf R has ‘touch’ controls on the steering wheel with haptic feedback to the driver.

Other standard equipment for this sportiest and more powerful Golf includes carbon look dash panel décor, R-specific door trim, brushed stainless-steel pedal caps and driver footrest, and 30-colour ambient lighting for the dash panel and doors that is synchronized with the display.

We await the arrival of the new Golf generation in Malaysia which should be sometime next year. Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia has been offering a mixture of variants in the current range which has included the Golf R, so it should also be available in due course.

With the government providing the incentive of exempting sales tax (10% for locally-assembled models, 5% for CBU models), it seems that there is strong interest in buying new cars despite the gloomy situation we are experiencing.

Companies selling new as well as used cars are reporting strong sales and for Proton, the volume in October was reported to be 11,392 units (including exports), which it estimates to be a 21.3% share of the market’s Total Industry Volume (TIV).

The volume was a 20% increase over the same month in 2019 although it was 4.6% lower than September’s. However, according to Proton, three of its models were leaders in their respective market segment – in the B-segment with the Persona (2,360 units); SUV segment with the X70 (2,216 units); and the Exora which retains its customary position as the best-selling C-segment MPV.

The Exora remains the most popular model in its segment despite being around for many years now.

Strong H2 performance overall
“The recovery of Malaysia’s automotive market is continuing to gather pace judging by the number of new model launches and total sales in October. We estimate the Total Industry Volume to be the second highest in 2020 with over 57,000 units sold, proof that the car industry is rebounding strongly,” said Roslan Abdullah, CEO of Proton Edar, adding that the numbers could have been better for Proton.

“Looking at the numbers, we noticed a significant drop in East Malaysia sales while the Central region was static compared to September. Part of this was due to the implementation of the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) to limit the movement of people, thus affecting retailers. But there was also a sense of customers holding back before the launch of our newest model, the Proton X50. Regardless, PROTON is confident of ending the year well and using the results as a base to aim even higher in 2021,” he explained.

The X50 has made a strong impact on the market which has responded with over 27,400 bookings to date.

Bookings for Proton X50
The long-awaited X50 SUV was officially launched towards the end of October and over 27,400 bookings have already been received nationwide. The first 447 units have already been delivered to customers and further deliveries are ongoing.

We are pushing to ensure fulfilment over the last three months of 2020, while continuing to emphasise product quality,” Encik Roslan assured.

In spite of what is a very bad year for virtually all industries, Perodua reported that its total vehicles sales last month were its highest-ever. 26,852 vehicles were delivered in October 2020, and this came after the all-time monthly sales record of 25,035 units just a month earlier.

“In September, we sold more vehicles in a month than in our entire 27-year history and now, we have gone even further,” said a delighted Perodua President & CEO, Dato’ Zainal Abidin Ahmad.

“This milestone is important to us in many ways; it underscores our commitment towards delivering our vehicles to their rightful owners as fast as possible while at the same time doing our part to rejuvenate the automotive eco-system,” he added.

Supporting automotive eco-system
He also mentioned that, in October alone, the carmaker purchased some RM600 million worth of parts from local suppliers, creating an enormous economic multiplier effect on the local auto eco-system which has been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The automotive eco-system includes direct and indirect sectors, such as automotive component suppliers, authorised dealers, stockists, agencies and contractors. Indirect, yet crucial partners include financial institutions such as banks and insurance companies.

“In terms of production capacity, we are on average at 98% in October 2020 with 26,362 vehicles – which is also our highest-ever monthly production figure,” Dato’ Zainal revealed. “These achievements were accomplished under the new standard operating procedures (SOPs) followed by Perodua and our partners. These include working from home and mandatory testing for those in red zones – on top of the original SOPs introduced in May.

“With the commitment of the suppliers, our authorised dealers were able to sell more vehicles and more importantly, ensure our customers’ happiness as their Perodua vehicles were delivered in the best possible time,” he added.

The Myvi is still the most popular car in the country.

Three bestsellers
During October, Perodua sold 8,052 Myvis, 6,738 Axias, 6,895 Bezzas, 3,193 Aruz and 1,974 Alzas. The top three models remain Malaysia’s best-selling cars so far this year, according to Perodua.

Dato’ Zainal also gave assurance to owners that they need not worry about replacement parts for their vehicles. “We have sufficient parts to every need as most of them were made locally,” he said.
