BMW’s successful executive sedan series – the 5-Series – has received updates for the locally assembled 530e M Sport and 530i M Sport. The two models are not on sale yet and registrations of interest can be made on the BMW Shop Online platform. Estimated retail pricing (on the road, without insurance) is RM343,000 for the new 530e M Sport and RM396,000 for the 530i M Sport.

The new variants will be available in Alpine White or Carbon Black, paired with either the Black or Cognac Leather Dakota upholstery; or in Phytonic Blue, Sophisto Grey or Bluestone paired with Black Leather Dakota upholstery.

Two powertrain choices
As the ‘e’ and ‘I’ in the model designations denote, one has a plug-in hybrid powertrain while the other is conventional combustion petrol engine alone. Both have the familiar 4-cylinder BMW TwinPower Turbo 2-litre engine, with the 530e M Sport having the latest generation of the BMW eDrive electric motor as well. An 8-speed Steptronic transmission system is standard for both variants.

The 530e M Sport’s total system output is 292 bhp/420 Nm of torque, of which 37% is contributed by the electric motor. With a fully-charged battery pack, the car can run on electricity alone up to a claimed distance of 67 kms. In daily driving, the fuel consumption is claimed to be as low as 43.5 kms/litre while still having a top speed capability of 235 km/h and a 0 to 100 km/h time of 5.9 seconds.

Electric drive up to 140 km/h
The standard AUTO eDRIVE setting enables all-electric driving up to a speed of 110 km/h; using MAX eDRIVE mode enables all-electric speeds up to 140 km/h. The BMW Xtra Boost mode is also available giving the vehicle additional power of up 40 bhp during acceleration. Of course, increased performance demands would also have implications on the range. Depending on the charging method use, the battery pack can be fully recharged within about 3.5 hours or no more than 6 hours with a conventional power outlet.

As for the 530i M Sport, the engine output is 252 bhp/350 Nm, which gives claimed 0 to 100 km/h capability of 6.4 seconds and a top speed of 250 km/h. Fuel consumption is said to be up to almost 15 kms/litre, which means the 68-litre fuel tank can allow for a range of about 1,000 kms.

Updated cosmetic features
Apart from the M Aerodynamics package, the latest versions have larger kidney grilles and slimmer headlights with a new daytime running light (DRL) design. The 530e M Sport has Adaptive LED Matrix headlights, in addition to the standard LED headlights, while the 530i M Sport uses BMW Laserlight. Both include the anti-glare BMW Selective Beam high-beam assistant with turning lights, and adaptive cornering function.

Additional visual enhancement is provided by the BMW Individual high-gloss Shadow Line for the 530e M Sport while the 530i M Sport has the BMW Individual Exterior Line Aluminium Satinated. The front and rear bumpers on both variants are also redesigned with larger air intakes, alongside new LED taillight elements in the signature BMW L-shape. For the first time, the light source is integrated directly into the taillight’s outermost layer, maximising the 3D effect.

New for 2021 are 19-inch M light alloy Y-Spoke 845 M Bi-Colour Jet Black wheels with both mixed and run-flat tyres. The new cars also come with Adaptive Suspension and the M Sport brake with blue-painted M Sport brake calipers. Along the Double-sided exhaust tailpipe finishers with a trapezoidal design and a distinctive diffuser insert identify these models.

Sporty, premium interior ambience
The interior of the two cars continues to include M-specific items with interior trim finishers in Aluminium Rhombicle, Dakota Leather upholstery and the BMW Individual anthracite headliner. Illumination within the car is provided by ambient lighting while the electrical glass roof offers overhead lighting which enhances the ambience of spaciousness. The dashboard includes a lighter-coloured contrasting seam, which continues onto the door trims, as well as control buttons in the centre console in high-gloss Black magnifies the interior design language.

As with most other BMW models, there’s BMW Live Cockpit Professional running the latest BMW Operating System 7. This infotainment concept is distinguished by its restructured display set-up, consisting of a user-configurable 12.3-inch instrument cluster and an equally large touchscreen Control Display. BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is included,

taking interactions between driver and car to the next level. Various functions can be accessed and controlled via the system, including sunblind activation and automatic lowering of all windows.

Exclusive to the 530i M Sport is BMW Gesture Control, Head-Up Display, BMW Display Key and a Harman Kardon surround sound system. For additional convenience and comfort the new variants have Comfort Access with contactless tailgate operation as well as automatic air-conditioning with 4-zone control, and electric roller sunblinds for rear windows.

Audio warning to pedestrians
Besides advanced active and passive safety systems, the 530e M Sport also has a feature which emits a sound via a loudspeaker system when the car is moving in electric mode at speeds up to 30 km/h. This is to alert pedestrians and cyclists ahead as the car will be running quietly when using the electric motor.

Financing schemes available
BMW Group Financial Services Malaysia offers financial schemes for the vehicle purchases and for the new 530e M Sport and 530i M Sport, monthly instalments can start from RM3,808.00 and RM4,398.00, respectively (terms and conditions apply).

New owners are assured of a premium ownerships experience with benefits such as BMW’s 5-year/unlimited mileage warranty, Free Scheduled Service Programme, BMW Roadside Assistance and Accident Hotline, BMW Group Loyalty+ Mobile App – BMW Privileges Card, and BMW Service Online.

BMW Group Malaysia was the leader in the premium automotive segment in 2020

Cars today are generally reliable and durable, able to last a longer period of time with no major problems. This is due to better manufacturing processes, engineering, materials, etc. so the warranty is really for peace of mind, at least during the initial years of ownership. In fact, warranties typically cover manufacturing defects and wear and tear parts are not covered.

Back in the 1970s, the typical warranty for a new car was a year, or a maximum of 20,000 kms of mileage after original registration. European manufacturers, perhaps understanding that their customers (in Europe) travelled long distances each year, generally didn’t put a mileage limit.

Longer periods as a selling point
Over the years, the warranty period and mileage limit became longer and longer, more as a selling point than anything else. The cars were more durable, but a long warranty period suggested the carmaker had a lot of confidence in its quality, and owners felt better to have the coverage for a longer period.

‘Win-win’ for both sides?
BMW Group Malaysia is now ending that escalation in warranty periods with a new approach that it says will ‘enable greater customer personalisation of their ownership experience’. It’s a win-win situation for both sides; the customer can enjoy a lower price while the company reduces its long-term exposure to warranty claims.

However, there may still be customers who like the peace of mind that a longer warranty period gives and for them, BMW Group Malaysia offers a 5-year Unlimited Mileage Warranty Package or 5-years/100,000-km Service Package as extra-cost options.

RRP: Recommended Retail Price. Prices shown do not have sales tax exemptions.
RRP: Recommended Retail Price. Prices shown do not have sales tax exemptions.

Available for MINI too
The new pricing approach applied to MINI vehicles as well. Customers of this brand can opt to add a 4-year Unlimited Mileage Warranty with Free Scheduled Service (Extended Warranty & Service Package) at the same cost as before. Alternatively, those who prefer to purchase their vehicle at the recommended retail price paired with either the 4-year Unlimited Mileage Warranty Package or 4-year/60,000-km Service Package can do so at a more attractive rate.

In the event that the owner decides, after a year or maximum of two years, that he or she would prefer a longer warranty period, there is still the possibility of purchasing the extended packages which range in price from RM5,900 to RM9,400 (RM2,500 to RM5,600 for MINI), depending on the model. The only thing is that the cost will have to paid as a lump sum rather than being included in the financed amount at the time of vehicle purchase.

Other ownership benefits still included
Regardless of which warranty they choose, all vehicles purchased from authorised dealerships will still come with access to the BMW or MINI Roadside Assistance and Accident Hotline, BMW Group Loyalty+ Mobile App – BMW Privileges Card, MINI Black Card, and BMW and MINI Service Online.

BMW Group Malaysia’s move is an interesting one and it remains to be seen whether it will have an effect on the rest of the industry. It could be a smart move that customers appreciate, or it might be viewed negatively. Nevertheless, with the trade-off being a lower purchase price for the vehicle, there may be positive response at this time when many people give more serious consideration to how much they can or should spend on a new vehicle.

More information on products, services and pricings can be found at www.bmw.com.my or www.mini.my. Personalisation of a vehicle purchase can be done via BMW Shop Online or MINI Online Shop.

There was a time when coupes came only with two doors but these days, the same sleek profile can be maintained even with four doors, and the new 218i Gran Coupe M Sport is a fine example of this. The compact model in the 2-Series family was launched today with a pricetag of RM211,367.00 (excluding insurance) and because it is assembled locally, there is full exemption of the 10% sales tax till the end of the year.

The 218i Gran Coupe M Sport has a newly-designed 3-dimensional mesh single-unit kidney grille that is complemented by slim, slanted LED headlights and LED foglights. Its sits low to the road with flared wheelarches and 18-inch M light alloy wheels in double-spoke style 819 M Bicolour within them.

At the rear end are slim wraparound LED taillights connected by a high-gloss black band. The new Gran Coupe also comes equipped with the M Aerodynamics package as a standard, along with the BMW Individual high-gloss Shadow Line.

In conjunction with the new model’s launch, BMW Group Malaysia also displayed the 218i Gran Coupe M Sport alongside a fleet of cars camouflaged in unique designs by local businesses, volunteer groups and Non-Governmental Organisations Komuniti Tukang Jahit, Changgih Designs, INKAA and Kanoe.

1.5-litre 3-cylinder engine
Under the bonnet is a transversely-mounted 1.5-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine produces 140 bhp/220 Nm. Its small displacement offers the best of both worlds – a claimed 8.7-second acceleration time from 0 to 100 km/h and a top speed of 213 km/h, with fuel consumption said to be up to almost 17 kms per litre. A 7-speed Steptronic double-clutch transmission is standard, delivering power to the front wheels.

Drawing on its decades of expertise in driving dynamics, the BMW engineers have ensured that the Gran Coupe offers the sort of performance expected of BMWs. A key contributor is the ARB technology (near-actuator wheel slip limitation) which allows significantly faster and more sensitive control interventions, while minimising understeer usually experienced with FWD vehicles.

The ARB technology features a slip control system positioned directly in the engine control unit which results in shorter signal paths, with reduced engine output as soon as there is a threat of wheel slip on the front wheels.

Modern sporty cockpit
In keeping with the exterior appearance, the cockpit is sportily themed and appointed. There’s a multifunction M leather-wrapped steering wheel, sport seats with Leather Dakota upholstery, and two-zone automatic air conditioning system. Illuminated trim finishers in Illuminated Boston and LED light sources via the Lights Package enhance cabin ambience.

BMW Live Cockpit Plus is composed of an analogue speedometer and tachometer which provides the driver with clear and immediate awareness of road speed and engine speed. The other operating information is displayed on a 5.1-inch, 4:3 portrait-format screen which displays information such as the status of the driver assistance systems and navigation instructions. This is complemented by an 8.8-inch touchscreen control display which can also be managed by the iDrive controller.

The compact dimensions of the Gran Coupe limit boot volume and a maximum of 430 litres is available (but 40 litres more than the 2-Series Coupe). Long items can be stowed if the rear backrests are folded down.

BMW Driving Assistants
The Gran Coupe has three assistance systems – Driving Assistant, Parking Assistant and Reversing Assistant. The Driving Assistant includes Lane Change Warning, Crossing Traffic Warning at the rear, Rear Collision Warning, and Speed Limit Assist. It also includes Lane Departure Warning with active steering intervention, as well as the Forward Collision Warning with brake intervention function. The Parking Assistant and Reversing Assistant are standard, along with the Active Park Distance Control and a lateral parking aid.

There are five colour choices – Alpine White, Black Sapphire, Snapper Rock Blue, Storm Bay, and Melbourne Red – but the interior is only available in black Leather Dakota upholstery with blue and black highlights.

As with other new BMWs sold through authorised dealers, the 218i Gran Coupe M Sport comes with BMW Group Malaysia’s Premium Ownership benefits such as a 5-year unlimited mileage warranty with Free Scheduled Service Programme, Roadside Assistance and Accident Hotline, Loyalty+ Mobile App – BMW Privileges Card and BMW Service Online.

Uniquely camouflaged BMWs to cruise streets of Kuala Lumpur

This Malaysia Day on September 16, BMW Malaysia will showcase a range of M models at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur. An exclusive M4 will also be unveiled at the venue and this car will have the design by a 27-year old Malaysian, Chan Wen Bin, who won the global BMW M4 GT4 livery contest. Chan beat many other contestants who had submitted their proposals for the contest which started in early July this year.

While a jury that assessed every entry, votes from the BMW Motorsport community on social media also counted towards determining the winner. Juan Diego Sanchez from Spain and Monholo Oumar from France were in second and third place, respectively.

2020 BMW M4 GT4 livery contest

In addition to the pure aesthetic perspective, the jury also placed a great deal of importance on the link between virtual and real-world motorsport when making their decision. With the motto ‘THE FUSION OF REAL WORLD AND SIM RACING’, the entrants were faced with the task of creating a design whose elegance and beauty comes into full effect not only in the virtual world but also in the real world.

“The black overall colour is always classic and elegant for a high-performance BMW coupe,” said Cao Fei a jury member who designed the 18th BMW Art Car. “The subtle blue and red parts scattered around the car are not only lively and chic, accentuating its sporty and exclusive aesthetics, but the colour combination also reflects the very essence of BMW M series, paying tribute to its history and legacy. This livery is truly timeless.”

Chan’s winning design for the M4 GT4 got him a cash prize of US$3,000. He will also have the satisfaction of knowing it will be seen  in a real-world race. At the season finale of the DTM Trophy at Hockenheim in Germany on November 7/8, the winning design will be on one of the M4 GT4 racing cars competing.

The design will also appear on the iRacing sim racing platform. The M4 GT4 has been racing on that platform in the virtual world since June, where it enjoys great popularity.

“I’ve been a fan of BMW since my childhood and always dreamed of achieving something with BMW one day,” said Chan who lives in Semenyih, Selangor. “This livery contest was a fantastic opportunity for me to show my passion for BMW and have my design used by BMW Motorsport. I’m over the moon and am delighted to have won this competition! I can’t wait to see the result in the real world. It’s one of my biggest successes in my career as a designer. Thank you so much BMW.”

The entry by Spaniard Juan Diego Sanchez which won second place.
Third place winner Monholo Oumar from France submitted this proposal.

BMW Malaysia today, in collaboration with Shell Malaysia, has introduced new engine oil service and maintenance parts programme for its long-term owners. The new programme offers two packages – the BMW Oil Service Package and the BMW Service Value Package.

The BMW Oil Service package, priced at RM500, available at authorised BMW service centres will use Shell Helix Ultra Professional ABB engine oil with a 5W-40 viscosity. The fully synthetic oil which meets BMW’s requirements is formulated with Shell’s PurePlus Technology. This technology uses a clear base oil made from natural gas with virtually no impurities.

BMW

Additionally, Shell’s Active Cleansing Technology helps to protect engines from power and performance-robbing deposits. On top of this, the low-evaporation formulation reduces the need for oil top-ups, and has superior resistance to oil degradation.

With the purchase of two BMW Oil Service packages (which include original oil filters), owners will also receive a complimentary Limited-Edition BMW M4 Motorsport Collectible Remote Car worth RM250 (while stocks last).

BMW

Meanwhile, the BMW Service Value package offers vehicle owners a programme which gets them up to 30% off retail prices for Original BMW maintenance parts. The parts include brakes, wipers, spark plugs, as well as micro filters and air filters.

Although the SUV trend accelerated during the 1990s, BMW didn’t immediately come out with a model as it wanted to make sure that such a vehicle would still have not just BMW DNA but more importantly, the driving dynamics that the brand had been noted for.

Only when its engineers were able to do that did the carmaker introduce a model for the SUV segment but called it  a Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV). This was the X5 which made its global debut in 1999 and began a new line of models with the all-wheel drive known as xDrive.

The driving dynamics of the X model, with advanced drivetrain and chassis technologies, make them completely credible as BMW models, And over the years, as with all its other models, BMW has developed its SAVs to deliver higher and higher performance. In recent years, they have also gained advanced driver assistance systems and intelligent in-car connectivity features.

Two of its latest high-performance SAVs are now available, having made their appearance at the Secret Garage @ M Town last night. They are the X3 M Competition and X4 M Competition, priced at RM886,551 and RM904,276, respectively.

Style and speed
The new X3 M Competition and X4 M Competition possess the characteristic M design elements in the familiar form of X models. The front end has a distinctive apron with a large, hexagonal air intake to provide optimal ventilation for the front brakes under high thermal loads.

Adaptive LED headlights with high-beam assistant, along with full-LED taillights provide the driver with powerful and widespread illumination while also making the vehicles visible to other road-users from a distance.

At each corner are 21-inch bicolour M light alloy wheels. On the roof, the X3 M Competition features a slim diffuser in high-gloss black and an M-specific roof spoiler, while the sleeker X4 M Competition has a black spoiler.

510 bhp/600 Nm from 3 litres
Powering the two M models is a 510 bhp/600 Nm M TwinPower Turbo straight-six petrol engine with a displacement of 3 litres. It can take the SAVs to 100 km/h from standstill in a claimed 4.1 seconds and reach a speed-limited maximum of 250 km/h.

Both models use the same M-engineered 8-speed Steptronic transmission with 3 Drivelogic modes – Efficient, Sport, and Sport Plus. There’s also an Active M Differential while the M Sport exhaust system – recognisable by its four black chrome tailpipes – adds a distinctive sound at going full throttle.

The M xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive system allows for conventional variable power distribution, or a Sport mode can be selected to have even more pronounced and dynamic rear-wheel bias.

The chassis has been upgraded with a high proportion of M-specific components for sportier driving characteristics, improving not just performance but handling and lateral dynamics as well. Some areas of upgrading include the strut brace, adaptive dampers, stiffer stabilisers. M Compound Brakes (made of composite materials to reduce weight) give even more powerful deceleration.

Spacious but still M sporty
Like the sedan models, BMW SAVs also have interiors that are sports-oriented, more so with the X3 M Competition and X4 M Competition. The spacious cabins have an iconic M interior ambience that starts with entry sills bearing the M designation. Comfortable front seats with active seat ventilation and lumbar support are standard and there is a M leather steering wheel with shift paddles, red M Drive buttons, and a red Start/Stop button.

These are complemented by the redesigned M gear selector lever and the 3-level controls for the engine, damper and steering responses. Further M-specific highlights are ‘Carbon Fibre’ interior trim finishers, decorative seams in BMW M colours, M seatbelts, M pedals, along with a M-specific instrument cluster, and knee pads. The sculptured M Sport seats, with illuminated M badges below the semi-integrated head restraints, comes with premium Leather Merino upholstery.

1.5-litre, 3-cylinder turbo unit
Under the bonnet is a BMW TwinPower Turbo  3-cylinder 1.5-litre engine which produces up to 140 bhp with 220 Nm of torque. Power flows to the wheels through a 7-Speed Steptronic transmission with double clutch, giving the X1 the potential to reach 100 km/h from standing in a claimed 9.6 second and achieve a top speed of 201 km/h.

Having a small displacement helps in fuel efficiency for the  engine which has won an International Engine of the Year award for 5 consecutive years since 2015. BMW claims it has a fuel consumption of 15.9 kms/litre which would give a range of around 800 kms on a full tank.

With the same basic styling as the X1 sDrive20i M Sport, the sDrive18i  comes with LED headlights, front LED foglights, satin-finish aluminium roof rails and exterior trim, as well as 560 17-inch light alloy wheels in V-spoke style.
