After an absence of over a decade, BMW’s legendary ‘ti’ model designation returns with the new 128ti. The 128ti is based on the M Sport model specification for the 1-Series. First deliveries in Europe will start towards the end of this year.

With M Sport specification as standard, the new 128ti is described as an authentic ‘Turismo Internazionale’, delivering on its sporting promise with features like the Torsen limited-slip differential, M Sport suspension, and a 2-litre petrol engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology.

Exterior design elements include distinctive front and rear aprons with additional trim such as outer air intakes from the M135i xDrive and the trim for the Air Curtains (in red).

The extended Shadowline trim with a black BMW kidney grille and dual 90 mm diameter black chrome tailpipe finishers come as standard. An even darker front-end appearance can be achieved with the optional BMW Individual lights Shadowline, which are largely devoid of chrome.

Suspension items from M135i
The exclusively front-wheel-drive model also has the firmer anti-roll bars and anti-roll bar mounts from the M135i xDrive, plus stiffer modified springs and shock absorbers and a 10 mm drop in height. A model-specific steering setup minimises torque steer while there are weight savings of around 80 kgs (compared to theM135i xDrive).

18-inch Y‑spoke 553 M bi-colour light-alloy wheels are exclusive to the BMW 128ti. Michelin Pilot Sport 4) in 225/40 R18 size are available on request.

Customised control systems
The mechanical limited-slip differential is assisted by several electronic control systems. One system that has been specially modified for the 128ti is BMW Performance Control, whose ‘sharper’ yaw moment distribution boosts rear axle agility.

ARB (near-actuator wheel slip limitation) technology is also utilised, as it is on all models in the 1-Series. This newly developed traction control system features a slip controller positioned directly in the engine control unit rather than in the control unit for the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system, enabling ARB to work 10 times faster.

As a result, not only is operation smoother and more sensitive, the system can also make maximum use of the potential traction offered by different road surfaces. The ARB technology works with DSC to significantly reduce the power understeer that can affect front-wheel-drive cars.

The engine is a direct offshoot of the BMW Group’s most powerful 4-cylinder unit. With BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, the 2-litre engine produces 265 bhp/400 Nm and is claimed to go from 0 to 100 km/h within 6.1 seconds.

Red to emphasise sporty character
Moving inside, the sporty character is emphasised by red accents which are a bold contrast to the black headlining. A large ‘Race Red’ surface adorns the front centre sections of the standard Sensatec/cloth sport seats (M Sport seats are optionally available). A red ‘ti’ is stitched into the centre armrest which – like the door armrests, the door panels, the instrument panel and floor mat edging – also features red contrast stitching.

The steering wheel rim and airbag cover of the standard M Sport steering wheel also feature red stitching. Standard equipment includes the M door sill strips on the front door openings, and M seat belts. The load compartment has a volume of 380 litres, which can be expanded to 1,200 litres if the backrests are folded down.

The infotainment system runs on BMW’s Operating System 7.0 with a display screen of up to 10.25 inches. Besides BMW Live Cockpit Professional, gesture control is also available and the customer can specify a 9.2‑inch Head-Up Display.

First details of new 6th generation BMW M3, to go on sale in early 2021

Additional choices of electrically-powered cars will be in showrooms soon with the start of production of new models from Volvo and BMW. From the Swedish carmaker’s factory in Belgium is the XC40 Recharge while BMW has begun rolling out its new iX3 at the BMW Brilliance Automotive joint venture (BBA) in China.

Volvo XC40 Recharge
The XC40 Recharge is the first of several fully electric Volvos to come. By 2025, Volvo expects 50% of its global sales to consist of fully electric cars, with the rest hybrids. Customer demand for the XC40 Recharge has been strong and at this time, every car to be built during this calendar year has already been sold. First deliveries to customers in Europe will commence later this month.

As a fully electric version of the popular XC40 SUV, the XC40 Recharge is based on the Compact Modular Architecture (CMA), an advanced vehicle platform co-developed within the Geely Group. It has a projected range of over 400 kms on a fully charged battery pack which can be charged to 80% capacity within about 40 minutes (with a fast-charger system).

The XC40 Recharge, Volvo’s first model to win the ‘European Car of the Year’ title, has the typically high safety standards the brand has been known for. However, being a EV without a conventional engine means it has a different architecture and Volvo engineers have reinforced the frontal section to address that issue.

The battery pack is protected by a safety cage embedded in the middle of the car’s body structure. Its placement in the floor of the car also lowers the centre of gravity of the car, for better protection against roll-overs.

BMW iX3
The fully-electric iX3 is  the first pure electric model from the BMW brand. The iX3 has been developed under the strategic “Power of Choice” approach to cover broad spread of customer requirements and statutory regulations around the world.

It has fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology with major progress made in terms of power density, operating range, weight, installation space requirement and flexibility. Electric motor, power electronics and transmission arranged in a central housing for the first time. The claimed operating range is between 460 kms and 520 kms, depending on the test cycle used).

Power transfer is to the rear wheels from the eDrive electric motor which produces maximum output of 286 ps/400 Nm. This gives the SUV a 0 to 100 km/h acceleration time claimed to be 6.8 seconds which is close to that of the X3 30i that does the same run in 6.4 seconds.

The iX3 will be the brand’s first model to also be produced for export at the joint venture factory in China. As well as intelligent manufacturing and state-of-the-art technologies, the production facility in Shenyang is also distinguished by its comprehensive quality management system.

A special ‘zero defect concept’ ensures that the globally high market requirements for electric mobility are met. There is rigorous testing of everything from the battery to the finished car to guarantee the vehicle safety. These include 128 mechanical tests and 994 software functionality tests ensure the high quality of the high-voltage battery packs throughout the entire lifecycle. Another 140 functional tests check every aspect of the vehicle during acceleration, in particular road conditions and on rocky roads.

BMW Malaysia tonight introduced the M8 Coupe (F92) and M8 Gran Coupe (F93) as the newest high-powered members of its portfolio. Priced RM1,452,960.88 and RM1,455,145.25, respectively, the new BMW models are with a choice of seven colours: Alpine White, Brands Hatch Grey, Marina Bay Blue, Motegi Red, Black Sapphire, Donington Grey and Barcelona Blue. The interiors come with Merino Leather, in either Black or Silverstone.

Optionally, BMW Individual is available for owners to personalise their cars. For those who cannot wait, one unit of the M8 Coupe in BMW Individual Frozen Bluestone exterior is available for purchase immediately (at an additional RM30,000).

2020 BMW M8

Both new models are available at authorised BMW dealerships nationwide from today. If you are convinced one of these cars is for you, go straight to the BMW Online Shop at www.shop bmw.com.my where you can place your booking for RM5,000.And who knows, you might also get to win a new BMW i8 Coupe.

With the Balloon Financing Plan from BMW Group Financial Services Malaysia, the M8 Coupe and M8 Gran Coupe can be owned with monthly instalment plans starting from RM16,578 and RM16,598, respectively (terms and conditions applicable).

2020 BMW M8

New frontal design language
The two models present the newly introduced 8-Series design language with muscular sculpted surfaces and distinctive characteristics at the front. These include the new M-specific front apron, along with the BMW kidney grille featuring M-specific decorative mesh, double slats and M8 designation.

The slender BMW Laserlights with high-beam assistant are positioned slightly higher than the kidney grille, widening towards the road to emphasise the low-slung stance and low centre of gravity.

2020 BMW M8

Both exterior mirrors have the characteristic M twin-stalk design and in typical fashion of BMW coupes, there are frameless side windows with BMW Individual high-gloss Shadow Line. Flared aluminium wings with M gills and M8 designation emphasise track width and wheel size.

Towards the rear, both models sport the M rear spoiler, as well as M-specific M8 rear diffuser and M-specific exhaust system with twin tailpipes and chrome trims.

2020 BMW M8

Other highlights of the two-door M8 Coupe and four-door M8 Gran Coupe include the soft-close function for doors and carbon roof made of self-coloured carbonfibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) that saves weight and lowers the centre of gravity. 20-inch M light alloy wheels in Double-spoke style 810 M Bicolour with mixed tyres are fitted.

Most powerful BMW M engine
Both cars have the same powerplant under the long bonnet: the completely redesigned high-revving S63 V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology. This 4.4-litre unit is the most powerful BMW M engine ever built for a production model, generating up to 600 bhp/750 Nm. That gives a 0 to 100 km/h capability claimed to be 3.3 seconds and a top speed beyond 250 km/h but not attainable since the maximum speed is electronically limited.

The engine’s characteristics can be personalised in one of three modes –  the default EFFICIENT setting, SPORT or SPORT PLUS. Depending on the mode selected, the system will change the response to accelerator pedal pressure as well as the sound characteristics of the flap-controlled exhaust system. A Sound Control button next to the gear selector lever is available for drivers wanting to adjust the sound from the M exhaust system according to their personal preferences.

2020 BMW M8

Power flows through a new 8-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic, operated sequentially via an M8-specific gear selector in S mode, or manually via paddles on the steering wheel.

Driving dynamics are enhanced with the M xDrive all-wheel drive system that has rear-wheel bias. For skilled and experienced drivers, the fully variable torque split can be adapted to personal preferences. The 4WD default setting can be switched to 4WD Sport and, with the DSC switched off, a rear-wheel-drive-only 2WD mode can be used on the track.

The models are also fitted with the M-specific integrated brake system. This innovative technology combines brake activation, brake booster and braking control functions in one compact module. The required brake pressure is established by an electric actuator, optimising braking dynamics and pedal feel as well as the precision and speed of DSC stability control interventions.

Sporty cockpit
As would be expected, the cockpit of both models has a sporty, low seating position with controls grouped into clusters according to their function. The M Sport seats, with illuminated M logo, come with many electric adjustment options including a Memory function.

The rear seats – upholstered in Merino leather as standard – are moulded to provide maximum lateral support which will be appreciated during ‘dynamic’ driving. With the rear backrests folded, the coupe has 420 litres of cargo space in the boot while the Gran Coupe has another 20 litres more.

2020 BMW M8

For infotainment, there’s the BMW Live Cockpit Professional running on the BMW Operating System 7.0. This package consists of an all-digital 12.3-inch instrument cluster, a high-resolution 10.25-inch Control Display and a full-colour Head-Up Display with additional M-specific displays.

Both models can be operated via the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant’s latest voice control system, direct menu control buttons, the intuitive iDrive Touch Controller with its rotary/push button, the touchscreen Control Display or the Gesture Control system.

2020 BMW M8

The new M Mode selector on the centre console can be used to control the driver assistance systems as well as the content of the instrument cluster displays and the Head-Up Display. M Mode can be used to activate the ROAD and SPORT settings and in addition to the M Mode selector, the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant enables drivers to use their normal, natural voice and speech pattern to interact with the vehicle.

BMW ConnectedDrive provides Connected Package Professional such as Remote Services, Teleservices, Intelligent Emergency Call, Apple CarPlay and Concierge Service. Other highlights include the Digital Key to unlock, start and lock the car using a compatible Samsung smartphone (available as part of the Comfort Access).

ADVERTORIAL

21 years ago, BMW introduced a new type of vehicle to the world. It was the BMW X5 which very quickly established itself as the best in the ever-expanding segment of dual-purpose vehicles. It introduced high performance in a segment that had up till then focused on ruggedness and off-road capability with compromises in on-road performance.

To be a true BMW, the X5 had to be the best in driving dynamics in all conditions, no compromises. The xDrive system gave this capability. Because it was superior to any other all-wheel drive (AWD) system, BMW designated the X5 as a Sport Activity Vehicle or SAV, rather than the utilitarian-sounding SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle).

BMW X5 Plug-in Hybrid

BMW X5 Plug-in Hybrid

The xDrive system of the BMW X5 adapts to all types of surfaces and terrain. On the hard and smooth highway, it maximizes grip and stability when cornering at high velocities. When the road ends and the surface changes, the system intelligently manages torque flows to each wheel as required – almost instantaneously – to maximise grip on uneven ground, mud, sand and whatever else the X5 encounters.

Over four generations, the BMW X5 has held its commanding position as The Boss in its segment. Each generation has introduced new technologies, extending its capabilities. Powerful, yet nimble, the SAV term has been constantly justified.

Following on from the introduction of the latest G05 BMW X5 generation in Malaysia a year ago, the SAV range is now joined by the BMW X5 Plug-in Hybrid (or PHEV, for Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle). Like the BMW 5 Series and 7 Series PHEV models, the new BMW X5 Plug-in Hybrid has the latest electrification technologies developed by BMW.

BMW X5 Plug-in Hybrid

BMW X5 Plug-in Hybrid

Its advanced hybrid powertrain, a major element in BMW’s electrification strategy, provides high performance while also promoting the eco-friendliness and sustainability. This is what today’s generation of customers expect to see in a product from a responsible and forward-thinking manufacturer.

BMW X5 Plug-in Hybrid

The 3-litre straight six-cylinder petrol powerplant develops maximum output of 210 kW/286 hp at 5,000 to 6,000 rpm, with maximum torque of 450 Nm available between 1,500 and 3,500 rpm.

Battery technology, an area of constant advancement, is one which BMW has leadership in. More energy is packed into the lithium-ion battery pack to give the BMW X5 Plug-in Hybrid a generous range of travel. It can also run on emission-free electric propulsion for extended periods.

The versatility of the SAV concept has endeared the BMW X5 to a broad spectrum of customers, most of whom are in positions of leadership and influence, just like The Boss. No longer is there a need for a formal image in the choice of transport for such leaders; with the BMW X5 Plug-in Hybrid, the credentials endowed on the owner confirm leadership qualities that are essential to be The Boss.

BMW will become the first carmaker to enable its customers to offer a fully digital car key, using Apple’s iPhone. Stored securely in the Apple Wallet for iPhone, car owners can just tap to unlock and easily get going by placing the iPhone in the smartphone tray and pushing the start button.

The owner can also share access with up to 5 friends including a configurable car access option for young drivers which restricts top speed, engine power, maximum radio volume and more. Management of access can be done from inside the car as well as through Apple Wallet.

Additional features of the new Digital Key include storage in the Secure Element of the iPhone;  power reserve for iPhone where car keys will still function for up to 5 hours if  the iPhone turns off due to low battery; and Apple Watch compatibility.

BMW Fully Digital Key

BMW is a leading contributor
The BMW Group is a leading contributor to the Digital Key standard. It was quick to recognise the potential of smartphones as digital keys – if done right. Standardizing the Digital Key contributes to user experience, security and availability in smartphone models all of which were key to the BMW Group strategy for the Digital Key right from the start.

Apple and BMW have been working closely with the Car Connectivity Consortium to press ahead with the establishment of global standards. The Digital Key specification 2.0 for NFC was released in May 2020 while the next generation of Digital Key using Ultra Wideband technology is already well underway.

BMW Fully Digital Key

The BMW Digital Key for iPhone will be available in 45 countries for a broad range of models manufactured after July 1, 2020. Compatible iPhone models will be iPhone XR, iPhone XS or newer and Apple Watch Series 5 or newer.

The BMW Digital Key follows other firsts for the brand, such as integration of the iPod in their vehicles and the first manufacturer to offer wireless CarPlay connectivity.

Smart Routes for BMW EVs
Also announced at the Apple Worldwide Developer Conference recently was Smart Routes for BMW electric vehicles in Apple Maps. This is a new feature (to be available in the new i4 in 2021) that will make it easier than ever for CarPlay users to take BMW electric vehicles on longer journeys by automatically taking into account when and where to charge.

Smart Routes for BMW EV

Drivers can plan their trip in advance on their iPhone or simply enter their destination through Apple CarPlay when they get into the car. Either way, Apple Maps will pick the optimal route based on electric range and the locations of charging stations along the way.

‘Golden Thunder’ is not the title of a new Chinese movie but the name of a special edition of the BMW 8-Series created by BMW Individual. Available for three body variants, its extravagant enhancement is in the form of specific design accentuations in gold along with high-end BMW Individual equipment features for both the exterior and interior.

The 8-Series Edition Golden Thunder is said to be for ‘customers with the very highest expectations in terms of style and quality’. The exclusive enhancements give the edition models the character of a custom-built vehicle.

2020 BMW 8-Series Edition Golden Thunder

Available for all model variants – coupe, convertible and Gran Coupe – the M sports package is also a standard feature in the range which covers the 840i and 840d xDrive through to the M850i xDrive.

A body finish in Sapphire Black metallic or Frozen Black metallic and carefully selected colour accentuations in gold give a distinct appearance. The dark look is supplemented by BMW Individual High Gloss Shadow Line with extended features and black brake calipers for the M sports brake system.

A striking contrast is created by means of golden accentuation lines running from the front apron to the side skirts and on into the rear apron. Other features finished in gold are the exterior mirror caps, the M rear spoiler (exclusively available for the 8-Series Coupe) and the 20-inch M light alloy wheels in double-spoke design.

2020 BMW 8-Series Edition Golden Thunder

Sportscar flair and individual luxury are also combined in the interior of the edition models to create an extravagant ambience. This is created by the extended BMW Individual Merino leather trim in black with the ‘Edition Golden Thunder’ inscription embroidered on the front headrests and the BMW Individual Alcantara Anthracite roofliner for the Coup and Gran Coupe, but in particular by the interior trim finishers in Aluminium Mesh Effect Gold.

On the centre console, the finely structured and high-end shimmering surfaces are supplemented with an edition emblem. The edition models also feature CraftedClarity glass applications for selected controls and the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System.

2020 BMW 8-Series Edition Golden Thunder

The Edition cars will be produced at the BMW plant in Dingolfing, Germany from September 2020.
