The star of this year’s Geneva Motor Show undoubtedly is the all-new Renault 5, marking the return of the iconic supermini to European roads, albeit with a twist—it’s now entirely electric.

Originally discontinued in 1996, the reimagined Renault 5, now dubbed the Renault 5 E-Tech Electric, is poised to navigate the urban landscape with eco-friendliness in mind. Retaining much of the charm of its predecessor, the electric supermini boasts a retro-futuristic design, seamlessly blending nostalgia with modernity.

The exterior design pays homage to its heritage with cute headlights, vertical taillights, and prominent wheel arches reminiscent of its predecessor. Notably, the rear door handles are cleverly integrated into the C-pillars, creating the illusion of a three-door layout reminiscent of the original Renault 5. While past iterations offered both three and five-door variants, the new model opts exclusively for a five-door configuration, albeit with red body accents paying homage to the iconic R5 Turbo. Additionally, enthusiasts can anticipate a hot hatch variant in the form of the Alpine A290 slated for release later in 2024.

Inside, the Renault 5 features vertical stitching on the dashboard and rectangular air vents, evoking memories of the original model. The digital instrument cluster and infotainment display, available in either 7.0 or 10.0 inches, further enhance the retro-modern theme.

Despite its petite stature, the 2024 Renault 5 boasts ample cargo space, measuring 325 litres, and rides on large 18-inch wheels with 195/55 R18 tyres. Utilising the AmpR Small platform (formerly CMF-B EV), it strikes a balance between compact dimensions and practicality.

The Renault 5 packs either a 40.0-kilowatt-hour or 52.0-kWh battery, powering a front-mounted motor delivering between 95 to 150hp, depending on the chosen configuration. Range varies between 300 to 400km, with fast-charging capabilities allowing for quick replenishment.

Unique to its segment, the Renault 5 boasts a multi-link rear independent suspension, along with bidirectional charging, a heat pump, and brake energy recuperation technology for enhanced efficiency. Notably, the oversized 5 logo on the hood doubles as a battery charge indicator light—a clever touch.

With an entry price around €25,000 (RM129,659), the Renault 5 combines affordability with eco-consciousness, signalling a promising future for electric mobility. Produced in France, it sets the stage for the return of other iconic Renault models, including the R4 and the next-generation Twingo, both slated for electric reincarnations in 2025 and 2026, respectively.

BYD, a renowned pioneer in new energy vehicles and power batteries, presents the debut of its first pure electric supercar model, the U9, under its high-end sub-brand, YANGWANG. Priced at 1.68 million RMB (RM1,114,756), the U9 is slated to commence deliveries starting this June.

Embodying the signature “Time Gate” design language, the YANGWANG U9 showcases a distinct aesthetic characterised by unique proportions, tension, and power, affirming its status as a true pure electric supercar.

Powered by two cutting-edge technologies – the e4 platform and the DiSus-X Intelligent Body Control System – the YANGWANG U9 redefines the pure electric supercar segment by seamlessly integrating track performance, street adaptability, and playful features.

The e4 Platform serves as the powerhouse, boasting four independent electric motors for agile and precise four-wheel torque output control. With a staggering 1,300hp and a maximum torque of 1680Nm, the U9 ensures the ultimate in safety, performance, and driving experience.

The BYD DiSus-X Intelligent Body Control System marks another groundbreaking advancement, enabling the U9 to achieve unmatched adjustability with a maximum suspension travel of up to 75mm. Its rapid lifting capabilities, reaching up to 500mm/s, deliver unparalleled agility and comfort across various driving scenarios.

In performance tests, the YANGWANG U9 achieved remarkable feats, including a top speed of 309.19km/h and a blistering 0-100km/h acceleration in just 2.36 seconds. With rigorous track testing, the U9’s thermal management system has been optimised to withstand high temperatures, doubling the maximum cooling capacity.

Equipped with advanced aerodynamic packages, the U9 boasts a Super Carbon-fibre Cabin structure and next-generation Cell to Body (CTB) technology, ensuring unmatched torsional stiffness and comprehensive travel safety.

Inside the cockpit, the YANGWANG U9 features two 14-way adjustable seats for an enhanced driving experience, complemented by the Dynaudio Evidence Series high-end audio system, offering an immersive auditory journey. The 127-color ambient lighting system complements the twin dashboard, which gives passengers a cockpit-like feeling. A 12.3-inch portrait touchscreen with mini-LEDs that is not rotatable operates the infotainment system, while a 10.25-inch mini-LED digital instrument display faces the driver.

GoCar Malaysia, a leading on-demand mobility-as-a-service platform, has forged a strategic partnership with Yinson GreenTech to introduce the Ora Good Cat electric vehicle (EV) through the GoCar Share program. This collaboration between GoCar and YGT’s EV leasing business arm, drivEV, underscores their joint commitment to expanding access to the EV experience and driving EV adoption in Malaysia.

The Ora Good Cat EVs will initially be available for GoCar Share (Round Trip) bookings at select locations in Klang Valley city centres, including Berjaya Times Square, The Linc, Lalaport KL, Eco Ardence, Eco Grandeur, and GoCar Malaysia PJ. Users can enjoy the Ora Good Cat experience at an affordable rate of RM23.90 per hour, with complimentary access to all standalone AC charging stations within YGT’s chargEV network. Despite the discontinuation of the BMW i3 in 2022, the electric vehicle (EV) continues to enjoy popularity in the secondhand market. However, a recent revelation has shed light on the potentially daunting costs lurking behind the allure of these eco-friendly cars. One i3 owner was left reeling after receiving a jaw-dropping quote of $71,208 (RM339,163) for a new battery pack for their 2015 i3 REx. This amount not only exceeded the car’s initial value but also surpassed that of a brand-new BMW i5 eDrive40.

While EV battery replacements are known to come with hefty price tags, this particular figure appears especially exorbitant, even by BMW standards. Similar estimates for battery replacements have typically hovered around the $16,000 (RM76,208) mark, making the quoted amount all the more shocking.

The ORA 07 is positioned as a sleek and high-performance all-electric coupe that seamlessly combines outstanding aesthetics with hardcore capabilities. Dongfeng, a prominent player in the Chinese automotive industry, has officially opened orders for its latest electric vehicle, the eπ 007. Priced at an attractive 159,000 yuan (RM104,392), the eπ 007 promises to be a cost-effective option for Chinese consumers. Early buyers can also benefit from a special subsidy of 10,000 yuan (RM6,559) that can be applied towards customisations, optional extras, accessories, or packages.

The eπ 007 is a four-door electric fastback featuring a modern and aerodynamic design with a low drag coefficient of only 0.209 Cd. Boasting a length of 4,880mm, a width of 1,895mm, and a wheelbase of 2,915mm, slightly bigger than the Tesla Model 3 facelift, the EV showcases a sleek and stylish exterior.

Despite its affordable price point, the interior of the eπ 007 is well-appointed. A 15.6-inch infotainment display takes centre stage on the dashboard, complemented by an 8.8-inch driving cluster that can be conveniently flipped around. The car comes equipped with luxurious features such as front 8-point massage seats, a 64-colour ambient lighting system, a premium sound setup with 20 speakers, wireless charging, and facial recognition for door unlocking.

The eπ 007 is available in both battery-electric and range-extended electric variants, catering to different consumer needs. The base 53-Pro BEV model, priced attractively at 159,000 yuan (RM104,392), features a 56.83 kWh battery pack and a rear electric motor with 215hp and 310Nm of torque. With a driving range of up to 530km on a single charge, the 53-Pro BEV accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in just 6.8 seconds.

For those seeking more power and range, the mid-range 620Pro variant is equipped with a larger 70.26 kWh battery pack, a 268hp rear electric motor, and a torque of 320Nm. Accelerating from 0 to 100km/h in 5.8 seconds, this variant offers an extended range of up to 620km on a single charge.

At the top of the range is the performance-focused 540 Max version, boasting the same 70.26 kWh battery pack but with two electric motors delivering a combined 536horsepower and 640Nm of torque. This high-performance variant accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in just 3.9 seconds and can cover a distance of 540km on a single charge.

Dongfeng also offers a range-extended version called the 200Pro, incorporating a 1.5-litre engine, a 28.39 kWh battery, and utilising the same rear electric motor as the base model. The 200Pro can travel up to 200km solely on electric power or an impressive 1,200km with the 1.5-litre engine serving as a range extender.

Noteworthy is the eπ 007’s comprehensive array of 38 sensors, enabling advanced features such as memory parking, remote control parking, and an advanced driving assistance system.

With the eπ 007, Dongfeng aims to make a mark in the competitive Chinese electric vehicle market by offering an affordable, stylish, and feature-rich option for consumers.

Jeep is set to make history with the introduction of its first electric vehicle bound for the US market – the eagerly awaited Wagoneer S. Slated for a fall 2024 release, the brand has teased enthusiasts with a short video, a captivating image, and impressive performance figures which is 600hp and a 0-100km/h time of approximately 3.5 seconds.

Positioned as an exclusive battery-electric vehicle, the Wagoneer S will feature Jeep’s 4xe-branded all-wheel drive as standard, coupled with the brand’s renowned all-terrain management system. While specific details regarding battery size, trims, motor technology, and pricing are yet to be disclosed, Jeep promises to unveil more information as the on-sale date approaches, keeping fans on the edge of their seats.

The Wagoneer S is set to hit US dealerships first before making its mark in “key markets around the world.” Jeep emphasises that the design of the Wagoneer S prioritises aerodynamic efficiency. The lone teaser photo offers a head-on view of a sleek, less blocky structure than traditional Jeeps.

Noteworthy features include blade-like side inlets on the lower bumper, the iconic seven-slot grille is LED-lit, and hints from the teaser video suggest a solid LED light bar gracing the rear end. Strikingly similar to the 2022 concept, the Wagoneer S maintains its distinctive aesthetic while embracing the electric future.

The Rimac Nevera is undeniably an extraordinary engineering feat. It has previously outperformed a Red Bull F1 car and the equally insane McMurtry Spéirling in a drag race, achieving an impressive 1.74-second 0-100km/h sprint. Now, its list of achievements might include breaking the world record for the highest speed achieved in reverse.

Guinness has confirmed that the Croatian hypercar shattered the previous record, set at 164km/h by a Caterham 7 Fireblade in 2001, by reaching a staggering 275km/h while driving in reverse.

Although Rimac hasn’t disclosed whether the car was modified to harness all 1,888bhp from its four electric motors in reverse, the absence of gears means the car may perform just as aggressively in reverse. However, it’s doubtful that the production version will allow such a feat, likely incorporating an electrical limit to prevent reenactment.

Goran Drndak, the driver of the record-breaking car at the Automotive Testing Papenburg facility in Germany, stated, “On the run itself, it definitely took some getting used to. Your neck is being dragged forward in a manner similar to what happens when you apply severe brakes, as you stare straight backward and see the landscape speed by you.”

“You’re controlling the steering wheel very slowly, being cautious not to throw off the balance, and you’re also monitoring the speed and keeping an eye on the rearview mirror to determine your route and stopping position. Nevera broke yet another record even though the way the car was designed was nearly entirely out of the ordinary.”

There’s good news for those eagerly awaiting the opportunity to own a Nevera. Rimac offers a Time Attack Edition, featuring a distinctive green and carbon livery, available on 12 road-going models of the £1.7 million (approximately RM9.7 million) hypercar.

In a surprising turn of events, Tesla’s CEO, Elon Musk, recently announced a delay in the construction of the Gigafactory in Mexico. This decision is attributed to increased vehicle loan interest rates and the complex global economic environment.

Nevertheless, it’s important to acknowledge that the EV market has displayed growth in various regions:

Mini is paving the way for a new era in eco-friendly exploration with the introduction of the all-electric Mini Countryman SE ALL4, a reliable companion that opens doors to adventure. This versatile crossover offers emissions-free mobility on diverse terrains, bolstered by its potent ALL4 all-wheel drive, advanced driving assistance features, partially automated Level 2 driving, and an impressive electric range of up to 433km according to the rigorous WLTP test cycle.

The modern, minimalistic design of the SE ALL4 accentuates its distinct personality with clean lines and broader wheel arches. In addition to its aesthetic appeal, this all-rounder has grown significantly, now measuring 4,433mm in length, 1,843mm in width, and 1,656mm in height. Just for comparison’s sake, the smart #1 has a length of 4207mm, a width of 1822mm and a height of 1636mm. This expansion results in increased interior space, offering up to 1,450 litres of cargo capacity when the rear bench is folded down.

Under the hood, two powerful electric motors deliver a combined output of 313hp and a torque of 494Nm, propelling the SE ALL4 through any terrain. Rapid charging with DC, peaking at 130kW, takes just under 30 minutes to charge the battery from 10 percent to 80 percent. Customers can optimise the charging process through user-friendly settings accessible via the Mini app. The introduction of the Plug & Charge system allows the vehicle to automatically initiate the charging process at compatible public charging stations, eliminating the need for additional authorisation.

The Mini Countryman SE ALL4, equipped with the Driving Assistant Professional, now enables partially automated Level 2 driving on motorway-like routes, allowing drivers to momentarily remove their hands from the wheel at speeds up to 60km/h, provided they remain attentive and prepared to intervene. The system can also identify suitable gaps in traffic for lane changes and adjust the speed accordingly.

The design underscores its rugged character with vertical body elements. Its striking front grille, distinctive headlights, and sculpted bonnet create an imposing presence. Short overhangs and sleek contours lend elegance to the vehicle’s silhouette.

Aerodynamically optimised light-alloy wheels, some measuring up to 20 inches, along with a sleek body design, contribute to a low drag coefficient of 0.26, enhancing efficiency and extending the range. The C-pillar design, with the model-specific ALL4 logo, supports the extended roofline while visually shortening the rear of the vehicle. The rear features a unified appearance with smooth surfaces and flush rear lights. The vertical orientation emphasises its wide stance, with distinctive Mini LED headlights and taillights adding to its unique appeal.

Four trim variants allow for individual customisation, enhancing different aspects of it with a stylish exterior and interior features. The range now includes the new Vibrant Silver roof colour for the first time, a characteristic Mini contrasting roof option.

The interior combines advanced technology and premium materials. The focal point is a round OLED display, controlling infotainment and assistance systems. The Mini Operating System 9 offers intuitive control via touch or voice assistant.

Mini Experience Modes offer immersive driving experiences with unique lighting graphics in various colours and patterns on the OLED display. Mini Driving Sounds create a distinctive ambience.

Passenger comfort has been elevated, with increased shoulder and elbow space for the driver and front passenger, and additional shoulder width for rear seat passengers. The cockpit boasts a modern, clear look with a two-tone textile-designed dashboard, further enhanced by the panoramic glass roof, infusing the interior with brightness. Redesigned trims offer a range of modern interior concepts.

The central console features a redesigned toggle bar for easy access to vital driving functions, eliminating the need for a gear selector and providing practical storage options. Smartphone storage and wireless charging are readily available, ensuring devices stay connected and powered.
