Ford will stop producing its best-selling Fiesta model as soon as next week as it transitions to an all-electric future. In order to create Ford’s new electric Explorer SUV at its Cologne, Germany, plant, the compact car will be decommissioned.

On July 7, 2023, the last Fiesta model will leave the factory for the European market. The Fiesta generation is coming to an end in favour of an electric future after 47 years and eight generations.

The step was taken after the American manufacturer declared it would transition to an entirely electric brand in Europe by 2030 and offer nine EV models by 2024. Ford and Volkswagen partnered together in 2020 to speed up electric vehicle (EV) production in the area with intentions to use VW’s MEB platform to introduce its own line of electric vehicles.

With quicker charging times and greater ranges, electric vehicles (EV) have come a long way. Despite this, some customers still experience range anxiety, which is understandable. When travelling, you wouldn’t want to run out of power.

Bill Ford Jr., executive chairman of Ford Motor Co., stated that his business is putting “all hands on deck” to prepare for electric vehicles because the US is “not quite ready” to compete with China in the manufacture of EV’s.

According to Bill, China has developed very quickly, and they’ve developed them on a large scale, and now they are exporting. China is on track to overtake the United States as the second-largest exporter of passenger cars, which could fundamentally alter the global auto market and challenge the dominance of its rivals and trading partners in the auto sector.

The Malaysian pick-up truck segment enjoys a cult-like following with fiercely loyal fans who will not accept any discussion about any other truck being better than theirs.

Fans of the Hilux will swear that the Toyota is God’s gift to mankind while the fans of the D-Max, Navara and Triton are probably ready to bear arms to defend their choice.

But in the midst of it all, the Ford Ranger Wildtrak is the silent King. Elegant, poised and well equipped for just about anything the world has to throw at it, the Ranger Wildtrak is perhaps the one truck that could comfortably hold a wheel to any other brand because it has about all of the features that one could ever need.

Although Ford pick-up trucks are sold all over the planet, they are not seen in China as the company’s range does not include such products. This will soon change as the carmaker has announced that it will manufacture and sell the Ranger in the world’s largest vehicle market.

The announcement was made at Auto Shanghai 2023 and the model to be introduced will be the latest generation which made its debut in November 2021 (Malaysia in July 2022). The Ranger is exported from two production hubs – in Thailand and in South Africa – to some 180 markets.

The Europeans never really liked SUVs because they were seen as big, heavy, consumed excessive fuel and were therefore not good for the environment. Pick-up trucks have been moderately tolerated but generally, they have preferred their small vans and stationwagons if they required something more utilitarian to carry stuff.

Of course, over the past 10 years, European carmakers themselves have also begun offering SUVs but they are more passenger car-like. They are compact and use passenger car platforms and drivetrains, so they are still largely cars with the looks of SUVs. And they are in great demand too…
