Huracan STO

A second collaboration between Lamborghini and Ducati was unveiled to the public at the San Marino Grand Prix at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli – the new Ducati Streetfighter V4 Lamborghini. An exclusive limited edition model, only 630 units will be built with each one priced at £55,995 (around RM288,350).

The Streetfighter V4 Lamborghini follows the Ducati Diavel 1260 Lamborghini which was presented two years ago in the first collaboration between the two companies, ambassadors of the ‘Made in Italy’ brand. While the first superbike was inspired by the Sian hybrid supercar, this latest one has been inspired by the Huracan STO.

The new superbike adopts the well-known ‘Fight Formula’ to the technical base of the Panigale V4 S 2023, while integrating elements and stylistic features that are unmistakably Lamborghini. Integrating technical and stylistic elements typical of Lamborghini DNA – and the Huracan STO, in particular – the superbike has exclusive livery in green and orange.

The Ducati Style Centre, in collaboration with Lamborghini’s Centro Stile, redesigned the superstructures of this special bike, drawing inspiration from the Huracan STO. It features specially-made forged wheels enhanced by the titanium clamping nut on the rear, with the front fender design is inspired by the air ducts integrated in the supercar’s ‘cofango’. The toe cap, radiator cover, wings, tank cover and tail are all made of carbonfibre, the same lightweight material used for all Lamborghinis.

The livery features the STO logo and the number ’63’, which refers to the year in which Lamborghini was founded. Multiply that number by 10 and you get 630 – the number of units of the superbike that will be available.

The colours used are exactly the same as those used for the Huracan STO, with a base in Verde Citrea (green) and contrasting parts in Arancio Dac (orange). The model name and the unique number of each unit are shown on a metal plate inserted in the central tank cover and an aluminium insert on the ignition key. Each owner will get a number Certificate of Authenticity for the superbike.

The superbike’s seat is also inspired by the Huracan STO’s seat finish with accents matching the superstructure. At the heart of the Streetfighter V4 Lamborghini is the 1103 cc Desmosedici Stradale engine with power of 208 ps with a dry clutch, as on the Ducati MotoGP and Superbike models.

Even more exclusivity
In addition to the 630 units, Ducati will offer an even more exclusive series dedicated to 63 Lamborghini customers. Thanks to the Ducati’s Style Centre and Speciale Clienti program, they will be able to create unique versions by customizing their Streetfighter V4 Lamborghini with livery and rims in the same colour as their car. It will then be possible to choose the brake caliper colours and seat details from those included in the Huracan STO palettes, in addition to the standard colour scheme.

A hurricane is one of the most destructive forces on the planet. A category one hurricane has wind speeds of between 119km/h to 153km/h, while a category five has sustained wind speeds of above 253km/h.

So when a car maker introduces a car called Huracan (Spanish for hurricane), you know that it means business.

The Lamborghini Huracan is already one of the wildest cars on the planet in terms of design and performance. But it’s not entirely new either, in fact the Huracan has been around since 2014.

Since then, a number of iterations have been introduced, each promising to be faster, meaner and more exotic than the last.

But nothing can be better than a Huracan that is designed to be raced. The Huracan GT3 EVO is one of the most successful race cars in the Lamborghini stable.

It has won the 24 Hours of Daytona, 12 Hours of Sebring and even the Blancpain GT Series Asia, among many other race series around the world.

But the problem with the Huracan GT3 is that it is a proper race car, which means regular rich folks can’t buy one to drive on the road.

But Lamborghini is one of the most successful supercar company’s in the history of the automobile, so it wasn’t about to sit around and not allow its customers to experience one of the best race cars it has ever built.

Enter the Lamborghini Huracan STO – the fastest street legal Huracan ever made!

STO stands for Super Trofeo Omologata, which simply means that the STO is a road-legal homologated version of the Huracan Super Trofeo Evo and GT3 Evo race cars.

Simply put, the Huracan STO is a street legal reimagination of the GT3 race car. Lamborghini’s official website says the STO is “a super-sports car created with a singular purpose, the Huracan STO delivers all the feel and technology of a genuine race car in a road-legal model.”

The STO delivers a unique race car like driving experience from the moment you sit inside.

The regular two-point seat belts have been replaced with motorsport derived four-point harnesses that are similar to those used in the GT3 race car.

Since it’s a road-going car, Lamborghini has included creature comforts such as air-conditioning and even an audio system. The interior is covered in lightweight alcantara leather and carbon-fibre adorns everything from the floor to the roof and the door panels. Even the seats are constructed of lightweight material.

Adding to the race car feel is a titanium roll cage that protects the driver and passenger should the worse happen.

But at the heart of it all is a race-derived 5.2-litre, V10 naturally-aspirated engine. This is the same engine that powers the Lamborghini Huracan race cars. Lamborghini says the engine is nearly identical to the race engines and offers a direct pedal-to-throttle feel that is the same as a race car. Even the seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox offers quicker gear shifts so that there is no loss of power during acceleration.

Lamborghini is one of the few car makers left that has not adopted forced induction. Naturally-aspirated engines rely on big cylinders or ultra high revs to create power, but these engines are also among the most responsive and provide the best engine note.

As for power, the STO puts out 640PS at 8,000rpm and 565Nm of torque at 6,500rpm. But because 75% of its body is made up of light weight carbon-fibre, the STO is capable of some astonishing performance figures, such as a zero to 200km/h acceleration time of just nine seconds flat! Top speed is rated at 310km/h.

Those in the know will probably think that these figures are not all that much. Cars like the Porsche GT2RS and even the discontinued Ferrari 488 make more power than the STO.

But the STO is not about pure power alone. It is about quick lap times and driving pleasure. For instance, Lamborghini pitted the STO against the Huracan GT3 EVO race car around a race track in America and found that the STO was just under two seconds slower than the race-only GT3 which was on race tyres while the STO was on road tyres. That is the ultimate proof of performance.

It also partly achieves this by using rear-wheel-steering. This turns the rear wheels in the same direction as the front wheels, giving it incredibly agility in slow and fast corners.

There are also other race derived technologies such as the the width of the car that is wider than the road car to give it better grip, a windscreen that is 20% lighter and suspension that is stiffer for more direct control of the car.

Part of the race experience that the STO offers is phenomenal braking performance. The Huracan STO boasts a new braking technology called CCM-R braking system. The system is provided by renowned braking experts Brembo using materials that is used in Formula One. The discs on the STO are said to provide four times higher thermal conductivity and 60% higher stress resistance. What this ultimately results in is strong braking performance that does not fade even after many laps.

One of the things that supercars tend to suffer from is brake fade, and that ultimate slows lap times because drivers have to brake earlier. But because the brakes on the STO have effectively solved this issue, this means you can drive at the knife’s edge of performance every single time and get the same braking performance.

The Huracan STO is undeniably one of the ultimate driver’s car in the modern world. It does not have that power figures owners can boast about, but it is a car that is appreciated when you drive it. The sound that it creates is one of pure emotion. You don’t only hear it in your ears but you feel it in your heart as well. And that what the STO is about, a pure unadulterated driving experience that overloads your senses and leaves you wanting more each time you drive it. There are very few cars left these days that are able to do that.

The Lamborghini Huracan STO is now available in Malaysia for RM1.48 million before taxes and customisation.

With the new FIA technical regulations coming into force this year, Lamborghini Squadra Corse has developed a new Huracan GT3 EVO2 which is an entirely new project. Compared to the Huracan GT3 EVO, which was homologated in 2019 and based on the Huracan EVO road car, the GT3 EVO2 is based on the Huracan STO and features all-new aerodynamic solutions and intake system.

It shares key design elements and rear-wheel drive only with the Huracan STO, and also the naturally aspirated V10 engine which, in the road version, delivers 640 bhp.

Huracan GT3 EVO

The two strong design elements – the hexagonal airscoop design and the rear fin – are derived from Huracan STO, contributing to a more efficient intake system and better car balance. The airscoop is connected to a snorkel, replacing the side air intakes, which optimally channels the airflow directly into the engine, resulting in greater responsiveness to the driver’s demands.

The introduction of 10 electronically actuated throttle bodies increases the efficiency of the V10 with titanium valves; the entire system, designed in-house by Lamborghini Squadra Corse, is fixed to the engine by just 4 screws, a solution introduced for the first time on the Essenza SCV12, to facilitate maintenance work.

The fully carbonfibre bodywork has a muscular design created in collaboration with Lamborghini’s Centro Stile. The new splitters, diffuser and underbody enhance aerodynamic efficiency. The carbonfibre floor, coated with high-strength Zylon fibre, together with the new diffuser, provides greater downforce than the current generation GT3 EVO.

Other innovations include the rear wing, which is mounted on aluminium alloy pillars inspired by those of the STO. The new supports allow for greater precision in adjusting the wing compared to those of the EVO model.

The redesigned roll cage, with the introduction of two rear pillars, and the new carbon-Kevlar honeycomb side panels, already tested on the Essenza SCV12, increases safety in the event of impact on the doors in compliance with the FIA 2022 regulations. The plexiglas side windows are now fixed to the carbonfibre door panel by means of a ring of screws for greater structural rigidity and reliability.

Stopping power has also been optimised as the brake system has been updated with new calipers and pads designed by Squadra Corse for both endurance and sprint races. These solutions, combined with dedicated traction control and ABS, have been developed to make the car easy to control in low-grip conditions. The car is delivered to customers equipped with PZero tyres (325/680-18 at the front; 325/705-18 at the rear) from Pirelli.

“The new Huracan GT3 EVO2 is not simply an evolution of the current car. It’s a new project that reinforces the technological transfer between Lamborghini’s motorsport division and the company and inherits two difficult tasks: to prove as successful as the previous generations of Huracan GT3, which have won more than 40 international titles in 6 seasons, and to match its commercial success by helping to reach the target of 500 Huracán racing cars since 2015,” said Giorgio Sanna, Lamborghini Head of Motorsport.

The first customers will get their cars from the second half of 2022, with the track debut to be at the 2023 Daytona 24 Hours. Those who are running the previous Huracan GT3 EVO model can upgrade it to the GT3 EVO2 specifications via an evolution kit.

Lamborghini Huracan deliveries pass 20,000 mark after 8 years

Lamborghini began delivering cars to its first customers in 1968 and until 2002, annual sales volumes were in 3-digit numbers. Last year, it delivered a record-breaking 8,405 units of supercars and super SUVs and this year, with the first quarter of 2022 completed, it has already delivered 2,539 vehicles delivered globally. That’s slightly more than the same period in 2021 and a record number for quarterly sales.

Contributing to the rising numbers over the past 8 years has been the Huracan, with the 20,000th unit recently delivered to a customer in Monaco. The model was a Huracan STO, one of 12 roadgoing models and 3 racing versions.

Since 2014, 71% of customers have chosen the coupe versions and 29% ordered the open-air derivatives. The biggest market for the model has been the USA, where more than 32% of all Huracans have been delivered. Other major markets have been the UK and Greater China.

LP-610-4 – the first coupe
The first Huracan coupe, the LP 610-4, debuted at the 2014 Geneva Motorshow. It has 4-wheel drive, 610 bhp, acceleration from 0-100 km/h in 3.2 secs and a top speed of 325 km/h. As with other Lamborghinis, it had a host of innovations such as Lamborghini ANIMA drive mode selection, on-board gyroscope LPI system, and dual fuel injection. A Spyder variant followed a year later, also powered by the same 5.2-litre V10.

For the purists who prefer just rear-wheel drive, Lamborghini came out with the LP-580-2. Thanks to the absence of 4-wheel drive, there was a weight saving of 33 kgs compared to the Huracan coupe, which meant that the same V10 engine could have a lower output of 580 bhp/533 Nm, with a top speed just 5 km/h less. A Spyder RWD variant was unveiled in Los Angeles in 2016, along with a limited edition (250 units) Avio model  which celebrated the aviation and aeronautic inspiration in supercar’s styling.

2016 – the Nurburgring lap record
The 640 bhp Huracan Performante was launched in 2016 and, with Lamborghini’s patented ALA active aerodynamic innovations, it set a lap record for production cars at the Nurburgring  Nordschleife. In 2018, Lamborghini added the Huracan Performante Spyder to the range as well.

The Italian police also have Huracans for their highway patrol. Besides normal police operations, the car is used for urgent transport of blood and organs.

Next generation V10 super sportscar
In 2019, the Huracan EVO ‘evolution’ arrived and with it came a distinctive design defined the aerodynamic superiority and enhanced driving dynamics. Its performance was enhanced from the Performante with advancements such as rear-wheel steering, torque vectoring and LDVI with predictive logic.

The EVO Spyder adopted the next-generation vehicle dynamic control and aerodynamics developed for the coupe, with the 5.2-litre naturally aspirated V10 engine uprated for a higher power output and incorporating titanium intake valves.

Though the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted business activities, Lamborghini was able to still unveil the Huracan EVO Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) which could go from  0 to 100 km/h in 3.3 seconds. In the same year, Lamborghini was the first automotive brand to use Augmented Reality for a virtual launch. This was for the Huracan EVO RWD Spyder and it was at a time when direct interactions were not possible, so the company brought its new model directly to customers and fans worldwide.

It was inspired by the Huracan EVO Super Trofeo developed by Squadra Corse for Lamborghini’s own race series, as well as the Huracan EVO GT3.

The Huracan Tecnica
The latest member in the Huracan family was unveiled earlier this month – the Huracan Tecnica. This has the next-generation rear-wheel drive V10, developed for both road and track. The new looks reflect improved aerodynamics for increased performance, stability and ease of use, particularly on a circuit.

The racing Huracans
The Huracan and its EVO successor have also had notable track records. Almost 500 racing versions have been produced in Super Trofeo and GT3 guise, including a limited Squadra Corse edition celebrating 10 years of Super Trofeo in 2019. Huracan GT3s have taken over than 40 championship titles and 117 victories in more than 12 series worldwide.

Connectivity and e-sports
In 2021, Lamborghini became the first automaker to incorporate complete vehicle system control by Amazon Alexa in the Huracan EVO, and also first to adopt the what:three:words function for accurate navigation anywhere in the world.

Lamborghini fans can also enjoy the Huracan virtually in many videogames and e-sports competitions including FORZA Horizon and Gran Turismo, Rocket League and Assetto Corsa Competizione.

“Every iteration of the Huracan has stayed true to that Lamborghini philosophy, while in motorsport the Huracán is not only the protagonist of the Lamborghini one-make Super Trofeo series but has proved its dominance in GT3 series throughout the world,” said Automobili Lamborghini Chairman & CEO Stephan Winkelmann.

In 2011, Lamborghini sold 1,602 supercars (there was no Urus then), not a record result but the numbers were still impressive considering the financial situation in many parts of the world that year. Ten years later, in 2021, the company delivered 8,405 vehicles worldwide, the highest number ever in the history of the company. In spite of the pandemic still ongoing, sales increased by 13% on 2020.

The contributor was double-digit growth in all 3 of the macro-regions where Lamborghini is established: America (+14%), Asia Pacific (+14%) and EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa, +12%). The company maintains a fairly balanced split between them in global volumes which stand at 35%, 27% and 39%, respectively.

Urus was bestselling Lamborghini model in 2021, accounting for 59% of total sales.

In terms of individual markets, the USA was still Lamborghini’s best market (2,472 units, +11%), while China moved into second place (935, +55%). They were followed by Germany (706, +16%) and the United Kingdom (564, +9%). There was also an increase in the figures for Lamborghini’s home market of Italy, where 359 cars were delivered in total (+3%).

Reflecting market trends, the most popular model was the Urus Super SUV, with 5,021 units delivered – almost 60% of the total volume in 2021. It was followed by the V10-powered Huracan, which saw a strong increase in sales up to 2,586, thanks to the strong impetus provided by the Huracan STO. In addition, 798 Aventadors (V12 model) were delivered all over the world.

During the year, the company launched 3 new products – the Huracan STO – Super Trofeo Omologata, a road-legal model that was inspired by the Huracan Super Trofeo EVO and GT3 EVO racing cars; the Aventador Ultimae, final series of the Aventador model; and the Countach LPI 800-4, an unorthodox icon featuring ground-breaking design and technology that celebrated the 50th anniversary of one of the original supercars.

2021 also saw Lamborghini announcing its future electrification strategy. ‘Direzione Cor Tauri’ (Toward Cor Tauri) is the name of the path that will lead the company through the decarbonization of its future models and the manufacturing site. Throughout the product electrification process, there will be a constant focus on identifying technologies and solutions that can guarantee top performance and driving dynamics.

More than €1.5 billion will be spent over the course of 4 years, during which time Lamborghini will launch its first hybrid production model and electrify its entire range by the end of 2024. Subsequently, a fourth fully electric model is due to be added to the range in the second half of the decade.

“This record has provided confirmation of four factors for us: the solidity of our strategic plan, our brand’s outstanding international reputation, the competence and passion of our people and the exceptional professionalism and dynamism shown by our 173 dealers in 52 markets, who have continued to invest alongside us at a challenging, uncertain time,” said Stephan Winkelmann, Chairman & CEO of Automobili Lamborghini.

The sales outlook continues positively into the new year, thanks to a substantial order portfolio that already covers almost the entire production planned in 2022. Additionally, Lamborghini plans to introduce four new products during the coming 12 months.

“We are stronger than ever as we prepare to embark on a period of profound transformation and move towards an even more sustainable future. In 2022, we’ll be doing our utmost to consolidate the current performance and get ready for the arrival of our future hybrid range from 2023 onwards,” added Winkelmann.

For this year’s Auto Shanghai motorshow, Lamborghini had three models on display, with the Essenza SCV12 hypercar making it global debut. The Essenza was accompanied by the road-homologated track car Huracan STO which makes its China debut along with the Huracan Fluo Capsule, the latest collection of the vibrant colours for V10 super sports cars (showcased in Asia Pacific for the first time on a Huracán EVO).

Stephan Winkelmann, who returned to the helm of the Italian sportscar company Lamborghini after being away for 5 years, was on hand to speak proudly of the past’s year’s achievement. “Automobili Lamborghini closed 2020 with its highest-ever profitability and its second highest-ever in terms of turnover and sales despite a factory closure of about two months due to COVID-19. This growing momentum has continued into 2021: the year opened with a very positive outlook, with deliveries in the first 3 months reaching the highest level on record. Orders placed thus far already cover 9 months of production,” he said.

“At this pivotal point in the company’s history, we are working very hard and preparing Lamborghini for a new era. The new development plans to be announced soon will outline how Lamborghini is going to become an even stronger brand, both here in China and around the world,” he said, adding that volumes in the Chinese market are expected to rise to second place in terms of sales, remaining one of the most significant markets for Lamborghini globally.

Following its virtual launch in 2020, the display at in Shanghai this week is the first public one of the Essenza SCV12. This track-only hypercar is finished in the exclusive Verde Selvans, Grigio Linx, Nero Aldebaran Gloss and Arancio California launch livery.

The limited-edition car – only 40 units will be available – was inspired by the Squadra Corse’s years of experience in competition. The innovative solutions found in this unique car create the new ultimate experience for the driver, with a futuristic design that fully inherits brand’s iconic elements, while balancing lightweight construction, functionality and design aesthetics.

The Essenza SCV12 is a direct descendant of cars such as the Miura Jota and Diablo GTR, with the most powerful V12 naturally-aspirated engine ever developed by Lamborghini. The 830 bhp engine receives a significant power boost from the RAM effect at high speeds. This high output is transferred to the wheels by a new X-trac sequential 6-speed gearbox designed as a structural element mounted within the chassis, combined with a rear-wheel drive system.

The large rear wing, side fins and front splitter are elements inspired by the Huracan Super Trofeo EVO and GT3 EVO. They promise greater efficiency and create higher downforce levels than a GT3 car, with up to 1,200 kgs on the rear end at 250 km/h.

As the first GT car developed to stringent FIA prototype safety standards, the Essenza SCV12 features an exceptional power-to-weight ratio of 1.66 bhp/kg. This is made possible by its new-generation carbonfibre monocoque chassis without an internal rollcage.

Born for life on the track and to race, there is the promise of the purest track experience that Lamborghini can offer. Every Essenza SCV12 customer will become a member of an exclusive club with access to special programs to drive their hypercar on the most prestigious circuits in the world. In addition to premium track facilities, the program also gives access to exclusive training programmes similar to those followed by the official racers.

The Huracan STO is a street-homologated super sportscar with the soul and characteristics of a real racing car. It is considered to be the purest incarnation of Lamborghini Squadra Corse’s motorsports prowess and heritage, possessing the technologies derived from the Huracan Super Trofeo EVO and GT3 EVO racing cars. These cars have scored many victories, including the 24 Hours of Daytona on three occasions and the 12 Hours of Sebring twice.

With a powerful V10 naturally-aspirated engine delivering 640 bhp/565 Nm, the rear-wheel Huracan STO can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in just 3.0 seconds, from 0 to 200 km/h in 9.0 seconds, and reach a top speed of 310 km/h, it is claimed.

To further reduce weight, over 75% of the exterior panels are of carbonfibre. Extensive applications of lightweight technology give the Huracan STO a weight-to-power ratio of 2.09 kgs/bhp with a dry weight of only 1,339 kgs.

Three new driving modes are available to the driver – STO, Trofeo and Pioggia. The default STO mode is for road driving and fun on curvy roads while the Trofeo and Pioggia (rain) modes optimise all systems for dry and wet surfaces, respectively.

The new Brembo CCM-R braking units use materials and expertise derived from F1 applications, ensuring superior heat resistance, performance and consistency.

In the exclusive Ad Personam room at the Lamborghini stand, visitors can view the Huracan EVO Fluo Capsule. Launched in November 2020, this is its first appearance in the Asia Pacific region, bringing to the super sportscar a daring yet elegant collection of bright and bold colours in a matte paint exterior with complementary interior colour and trim options.

The display unit is being presented in matte Verde Shock (green) colour with another four exterior and interior configurations – Arancio Livrea (orange), Celeste Fedra (blue), Arancio Dac (orange) and Giallo Clarus (yellow), combined with matte black details and coloured accent lines. The Capsule offers an additional layer of variety and personalization to the already near-infinite possibilities that the Ad Personam program offers.

The latest Lamborghini to be announced, with deliveries starting later in 2021, is the Huracan STO (Super Trofeo Omologata), a road-homologated super sportscar inspired by Lamborghini racing cars. These include the Huracan EVO Super Trofeo developed by Lamborghini Squadra Corsa for the brand’s own race series, as well as the Huracan EVO GT3, 3-time winner of the 24 Hours of Daytona and 2-time winner of the 12 Hours of Sebring.

With its 640 bhp/565 Nm naturally-aspirated V10 engine, the rear-wheel drive Huracan STO is said to take just 3 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.0 seconds, reaching 200 km/h in another 6 seconds, and on to a claimed top speed of 310 km/h.

As with other Lamborghini models, it has racing car DNA with superior aerodynamic efficiency, extensive use of lightweight materials, and first-class braking performance.

‘Made in Lamborghini’ design solution
The term ‘Cofango’ derives from the fusion of two Italian words: cofano (bonnet) and parafango (fender), created by Automobili Lamborghini to describe the design solution in which the bonnet, fenders and front bumper are integrated into a single component.

This innovative system created by Lamborghini engineers was inspired by the Miura and the more recent Sesto Elemento; applied to the STO, it is made entirely of very light carbonfibre. The key for opening the fastenings on the STO’s Cofango is unique: it was developed in-house by the R&D team and made using an innovative 3D printing technique.

Incidentally, the confango is one of over 2,750 components that make up the latest Lamborghini model.

Dynamic pit stop in just 3 seconds
There is not much that can be changed in 3 seconds, but the set-up of the Huracan STO is one. Three new driving modes – STO (normal driving), Trofeo (race mode) and Pioggia (raining or wet) – adapt the set-up of the car to match high-performance driving environments. The Huracan STO allows the driver to experience a dynamic pit stop, as if a team of mechanics were right there!

3 times around the world in simulator tests
Lamborghini’s R&D team drove a distance equivalent to 3 times around the world in simulator tests before even covering the first kilometre of the Huracan STO’s road tests. State-of-the-art simulator technology allowed the engineers to save time on quality control, lead times, and emissions by verifying that every part of the car fully complied with standards during different stages of the STO’s development, certifying and testing.

25,000 lines of code
Connectivity is a big thing nowadays and the occupants must be provided with various ways to connect to the infotainment system, The Huracan STO also has connectivity in the form of an advanced connected telemetry system. This link between car’s on-board cameras, Connected Cloud Lamborghini and the App Lamborghini UNICA allows, thanks to an intuitive data analysis system and videos enriched with dedicated widgets, to transform the exclusive App dedicated to Lamborghini customers into a real track engineer. The development of this technology on the Lamborghini UNICA App required more than 25,000 lines of code.

SC20 by Lamborghini Squadra Corse – a road-legal track car

The Huracan Super Trofeo EVO that is run in Lamborghini Squadra Corse’s one-make race series is now replicated as a road-homologated super sportscar in the new Huracan STO. Priced from 249,412 euros (about RM1.21 million), first deliveries will start in early 2021.

“The Huracan STO is the purest incarnation of Lamborghini Squadra Corse heritage, directly transferring technologies from the Huracan Super Trofeo EVO and drawing on the Huracan GT3 EVO’s unique accomplishment of winning three consecutive times in the Daytona 24 hours,” said Automobili Lamborghini’s new Chairman & CEO, Stefano Domenicali.

Aerodynamic superiority
The Huracan STO has an entirely new exterior design, revising the familiar Lamborghini profile to optimize airflow. Inspired by the racing cars, the Huracan STO reflects the technology transfer in every aesthetic detail.

Every aspect of the design draws on the aerodynamic efficiency and lightweight technologies demanded in motorsports. While the Centro Stile department focussed on aesthetic excellence, Lamborghini’s R&D and Squadra Corse departments optimized the car to ensure the best driving performance.

The bonnet, fenders and the front bumper are a single unit referred to as the ‘cofango’ (a combination of the Italian words for bonnet and gender – cofano and parafango). Inspired by the Miura and more recent Sesto Elemento, it is not only lightweight but also a time-saving access feature in motorsports.

New air ducts on the front bonnet increase airflow through the central radiator to improve engine cooling as well as helping generate downforce. The cofango also incorporates a new front splitter, directing airflow to the newly designed underbody of the car and to the rear diffuser.

The cofango is shaped to push the airflow on top of the front fenders, which incorporate louvres to maximize airflow exiting from the wheelhouse, reducing pressure inside and increasing the front downforce. The side profile of the cofango directs airflow around the front wheels, reducing drag.

NACA air intake
A new rear fender derived from the Super Trofeo EVO achieves both reduction of the front area of the car and consequently the drag, while increasing rear downforce and the car’s overall aerodynamic efficiency. A NACA air intake integrated into the STO’s rear fender serves as an engine air intake, with the shortened duct allowing a 30% decrease in static pressure losses.

The revised rear cover design features an integrated air scoop to improve air-cooling at the rear compartment. Dedicated air deflectors, integrated in the rear bonnet’s frame, manage the significant incoming airflow from the snorkel according to the temperature regulation needs of the engine and exhaust outlet.

An integrated ‘shark fin’ on the rear panel improves the dynamic abilities of the STO, particularly when cornering. In such conditions, the incoming airflow has a yaw angle, and the different pressure levels generated by the two sides of the fin create a positive effect on yaw stability. The fin also helps straighten airflow onto the wing, increasing wing efficiency during cornering.

Adjustable rear wing
A manual, easily adjusted aero set-up of the new rear wing optimizes aerodynamic balance and drag resistance according to track characteristics. A single slotted wing with double airfoil allows the front part of the airfoil to rotate into three positions to enhance rear downforce. The aero balance of the car can be varied by 13% to adapting to different driving styles and conditions.

The new front brake cooling ducts are dedicated to cooling the discs and calipers of the new CCM-R brakes, working in conjunction with the cofango air-louvres that extract hot air from the front wheelhouses. Additional air intakes including on the underbody, and optimized nolders, are located at the rear.

All the efforts have given the Huracan STO the highest level of downforce in its class. Overall airflow efficiency is improved by 37% and a significant downforce increase of 53% is reached over the Huracan Performante.

Lightweight approach
The Huracan STO uses carbonfibre in more than 75% of its exterior panels, benefiting from complex structures produced as a single component for increased integrity while also reducing weight via less fixing points.

The lightweight technologies include a carbonfibre ‘sandwich’ technique utilized in the aerospace industry. Thanks to this technology, 25% less carbonfibre material is used while maintaining the same structural rigidity. With a dry weight of 1,339 kgs, the Huracan STO’s weight is reduced by 43 kgs compared to the already lightweight Huracan Performante.

Contributing to the weight reductions are a windscreen 20% lighter than the Huracan Performante, and magnesium rims. The rims are fitted with bespoke Bridgestone Potenza tyres, available in two versions: one road-focused, the other more track-oriented.

Squadra Corse at its heart
The V10 naturally aspirated engine of the Huracán EVO and Super Trofeo produces 640 bhp/565 Nm.  It has been calibrated for a very sporty and responsive racing feel, with a direct pedal-to-throttle feeling and improved engine sound sharpness at high revs. The gearchange speed has been further increased to provide a highly responsive and rapid gearshift.

With an increased wheel track, stiffer suspension bushing, specific anti-roll bars and Lamborghini’s MagneRide 2.0, rear-wheel steering, and a more direct and fixed steering ratio, this car has been designed for a race environment.

With a weight to power ratio of 2.09 kgs/bhp, claimed acceleration from 0 – 100km/h is 3 seconds with braking from 100 km/h – 0 in 30 metres. On a road where speed limits are non-existent, the driver will be able to take it up as high as 310 km/h, it is claimed.

Interior designed for purpose
The interior of the Huracan STO reflects the lightweight persona of the exterior, as evident in the extensive use of carbonfibre features throughout the cockpit, including the sport seats. Even the  carpets are removed and replaced by floor mats in carbonfibre, and the fully carbonfibre lightweight door panels use the door latch as an opener.

New Human-Machine Interface (HMI) graphics feature on the touchscreen where the driver can easily manage the car’s functions. A fully connected telemetry system allows drivers on racetracks to monitor and record their performance and to analyze the data via the Lamborghini UNICA app.

As with every Lamborghini, customers can fully personalize both the exterior and interior via the Ad Personam personalization program. Virtually  limitless paint and trim combinations as well as race-style vinyls allow for personalized livery. An example as shown in the pictures of the launch car has Blu Laufey and Arancio California which emphasises the Huracan STO’s young and sporty racing spirit.
