limited edition

November 11 seems to be one of the days in the year when Lazada likes to have a special offering relating to cars. Last year, for its ‘11.11 Shopping Festival’, it teamed up with Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia to offer 11 units of a special edition of the Volkswagen Polo Black & White – only for purchase online.

For this year’s 11.11 Shopping Festival, they are partnering Sime Darby Auto ConneXion (SDAC), the Ford people, to offer a Limited Edition Ford Ranger Splash. Because it’s 2019, there are only 19 units available and they can be purchased only via the Lazada website. For those who remember the original Ranger Splash, it was a bright yellow (with blue available later on) but this 2019 Splash is available only in black.

Lazada Ford Ranger Splash

The latest Ranger Splash, which is powered by a 2-litre 180 ps/420 Nm turbodiesel, is priced at RM138,888 (without insurance, Peninsular Malaysia private registration). For the money, you get a special front grille and black-themed items such as the sport bar, alloy wheels door mirror housings, kangaroo bar and fender flares. Value-added features include a built-in tollcard reader and a 360-degree camera display.

Lazada Ford Ranger Splash

Although sales officially start on November 11, Lazada is accepting pre-orders through its Chup Dulu function. If you really want one, you should use this function as the 11 units of the Polo were booked within one minute of sales officially starting last year!

The Ranger Splash can be booked for a total of RM1,389 (1% of the price) and here’s how it works. From October 28 to November 10, customers must first pay the 10% deposit on the booking fee which is RM139 using the Lazada app. Then they check out and pay the balance of RM1,250 on November 11 to secure the booking. Once the final booking fee payment is made, the full amount of the booking is still refundable.

Because the process of buying a vehicle in Malaysia still involves a lot of documents that need to be signed and loan applications must be approved, it’s unlike buying other items online where you just pay and the goods are delivered to your house. So a representative from a Ford dealership will contact the customers to finalise the process.

The first 11 buyers who complete their booking process during Chup Dulu will also receive a RM500 PETRONAS gift card with their vehicle when it is delivered to them. Each unit comes with a warranty of 3 years or maximum of 100,000 kms as well as free scheduled maintenance for the first 5 years or maximum of 100,000 kms.

Commenting on the partnership with Lazada, SDAC’s Managing Director, Syed Ahmad Muzri Syed Faiz, said: “Consumers’ purchasing patterns have altered dramatically in recent years. With eCommerce entrenched in our daily lives and they have embraced purchasing items – including cars – online. This collaboration to offer the Limited Edition Ford Ranger Splash on Lazada’s online shopping platform gives us more opportunities to connect with a new generation of drivers through digitalization.”

“We always look at new ways of reaching out to our customers by forging ahead and transforming and providing unique shopping experiences, with more things to come in the spirit of ‘Go Further’,” he added.

Lazada Ford Ranger Splash

2000 Ford Ranger Splash
Older readers and truck enthusiasts will remember the original Ranger Splash which was introduced in 2000. Conceived  by Ford Malaysia, it was unique to this market and the yellow colour was inspired by the trucks of the ‘Baywatch’ TV series  of the late 1980s. The Splash made an impact on the truck scene in Malaysia as it  changed the perception of pick-up trucks as being just workhorses. The Ranger, of course, had started that change but it was also helped greatly by a change in regulations which allowed such vehicles to be registered for private use.

Each person has their special days – birthdays, anniversaries, etc – which they celebrate each year. But for all Malaysians, August 31 is celebrated by everyone to mark the day when the country became independent in 1957. As the Rolls-Royce Ghost nears the end of its 10-year tenure, the carmaker has prepared an exclusive collection as a fitting farewell to the model line. This is a very rare occasion – once in 10 years at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars – that gives collectors of luxury the chance to obtain an item that is truly at its apex.

Highest levels of Bespoke
Known as the Ghost Zenith Collection, there will be just 50 Zeniths that celebrate the timeless elegance of a nameplate which has become the cornerstone of contemporary Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. In true keeping with its name, the Ghost Zenith Collection will feature the highest levels of Bespoke ever seen on a Ghost Collection car.

2019 Rolls-Royce Ghost Zenith Collection

The only previous occasion when collectors around the world were afforded this privilege was in 2016 when an equally limited number of Phantom VII Zeniths celebrated the end of its extraordinarily long and successful reign. The cars immediately became highly collectable and sought after, re-setting the bar of luxury and, in doing so, creating a modern legend.

Model with a rich and extraordinary past
The Ghost is a luxury icon that carries with it a rich and extraordinary past. From the Silver Ghost, the car that established the moniker of ‘The Best Car in the World’ over 100 years ago, to the 200EX (pictured below), the experimental car that introduced the concept of a contemporary expression of this nameplate at the Geneva Motor Show in 2009, this model has offered patrons of the marque a modern, lithe and driver-focused Rolls-Royce.

Rolls-Royce 200EX

When the Ghost went on sale in 2009, its elegant lines and dynamic offering quickly made it the most successful Rolls-Royce car ever to be built. Notably, it attracted a new group of young entrepreneurs to the marque. Indeed, the reduction in average age of a Rolls-Royce customer to around 43 is in part testament to Ghost’s global success.

“The Ghost Zenith Collection presents an entirely forward-looking study of the unique characteristics that have seen Ghost ascend to the status of the most progressive super-luxury saloon ever conceived. This unique Collection provides customers with a rare opportunity to own a car truly evocative of our time. Ghost is the most successful Rolls-Royce ever created and the Zenith Collection marks an important milestone in our modern history,” commented Torsten Muller-Otvos, CEO, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars.

References from the 200EX
The Ghost Zenith Collection draws many references from the 200EX (pictured above), with perhaps the most significant being the inclusion of a commemorative ingot. This came from the original 200EX Spirit of Ecstasy, melted down and set into the centre console of each of the 50 Zeniths. Engraved with the three key design lines of Ghost, the plaque details its significant origins. The Collection’s own Spirit of Ecstasy and clock are engraved with the name of this highly anticipated collection.

Rolls-Royce Ghost Zenith Collection

Furthermore, 200EX is immortalized in a complex engraving on the centre console of Ghost Zenith. A blueprint inspired artwork enlarged to a point of abstraction has been divided into 50 distinct parts, allowing each Ghost Zenith customer their own personal and individual work of art while, at the same time, uniting the collection as a group homage to Ghost.

An interesting feature is the interior of the Collection’s doors, owing to the illuminated door pockets. Ambient light emits through perforated leather enhancing the architectural elegance of Ghost’s interior. One will also encounter a complex piece of marquetry, created by the master craftsmen and women in the marque’s legendary woodshop. Available in either wood, Technical fibre or piano finished veneer, the door marquetry transitions from the driver’s suite to passenger suite, emphasizing the dual nature to Ghost.

Details inspired by original 1907 model
The rear seats feature embroidery that takes its inspiration from the seat details of the original 1907 Silver Ghost. This embroidery elegantly transitions from the rear to the front of the cabin and, in the case of the Extended Wheelbase Zenith, the headliner thrusts purposefully forward into the poised silhouette of the Spirit of Ecstasy. The seats themselves are accentuated in a contrasting leather, accenting Ghost as the ultimate 4-seat limousine.

Rolls-Royce Ghost Zenith Collection

Rolls-Royce Ghost Zenith Collection

Occupants of the Ghost Zenith Standard Wheelbase will experience an extraordinary phenomenon. The famed starlight headliner is presented in a unique Shooting Star configuration. Shooting stars fire at random across the cabin roof, adding an extraordinary sense of theatre. This surprise and delight feature consists of over 1,340 individually mapped and hand-woven fibreoptic lights.

Reminiscent of its Phantom counterpart, The Ghost Zenith Collection’s exterior styling takes on a new interpretation of its own: a special two-tone application with a gloss-contrast paint finish. Customers may select three different colour-ways – Iguazu Blue with Andalusian White, Premiere Silver with Arctic White or a daring Bohemian Red with Black Diamond, with multiple variants available highlighting the flexibility of the model. The Silver Satin bonnet was first seen on 200EX.

When Ford Performance first developed the modern Ford GT, the focus was on giving customers a street-legal GT supercar which would also be capable on the race track. Now, with the GT Mk II, the full performance potential of the car is available – without any artificial performance limitations dictated by racing sanctioning bodies.

The GT Mk II is a limited-edition, track-only GT that represents the next stage in Ford GT performance. With a 700 bhp 3.5-litre EcoBoost engine, race-proven aerodynamics and competition-oriented handling, it has been co-developed by Ford Performance and Multimatic based on competitive learnings from Ford’s successful FIA World Endurance Championship and IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship campaigns with the GT racing car.

“It’s the closest GT owners can get to the Le Mans-winning performance and exhilarating feeling of crossing the finish line in the Ford GT race car,” said Hau Thai-Tang, Ford Chief Product Development and Purchasing Officer.

Only 45 cars at almost RM5 million each
Limited to just 45 cars, with a starting price of US$1.2 million (almost RM5 million), the GT Mk II joins the GT racing car that won the 2016 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Ford GT supercar.

“The true off-the-hook performance capability of the GT hasn’t yet been fully showcased,” said Multimatic’s Chief Technical Officer, Larry Holt. “The road car is obviously limited by the many global homologation requirements that it must comply with, and the race car suffers from the restriction of the dreaded Balance of Performance, resulting in it being 150 bhp down to the road car. The Mk II answers the regularly asked question of how would the car perform with all the limitations lifted: the answer is ‘spectacularly’!”

Originating from a standard GT
The Mk II begins life at the main Ford GT plant before being transferred to a specialist facility at Multimatic Motorsports where it is crafted into the Ford GT Mk II. The GT Mk II is focused around aerodynamic and engine improvements and shares key features with both the street-legal GT supercar as well as the GT racing car. Many of its components have been track-proven in the world’s most challenging endurance racing events.

The large dual-element rear wing exceeds what the Ford GT race car offers in terms of downforce. An all-new front racing splitter and diffuser have been incorporated along with new fender louvres and dive planes, which help balance out the extra rear downforce.

These aggressive aerodynamic changes enable the GT Mk II to generate over 400% more downforce than the Ford GT while fixed aerodynamic elements along with its race-proven suspension and Michelin Pilot Sport racing tyres enable the car to pull more than 2g of lateral grip.

The GT Mk II is also lighter and more agile. The street car’s adjustable ride height and drive modes have been removed, providing weight savings of over 90 kgs while 5-way adjustable DSSV shock absorbers work with a lowered and fixed ride height to improve handling and keep the Mk II as aerodynamically efficient as possible.

Unrestricted EcoBoost engine development
The 3.5-litre EcoBoost engine is not limited by any racing sanctioning body and is able to generate 200 bhp more than the racing car, making this the most powerful version of the Ford GT. The 3.5-litre EcoBoost is paired with the same 7-speed dual-clutch transmission from the Ford GT but specially calibrated for this track-exclusive application.

To add stamina to power, the GT Mk II adds innovative engine cooling technology, including a high capacity air-to-air outboard mounted charge air cooler with water spray technology. The water spray automatically activates in high temperature situations to provide cooling by applying atomised water on the charge air cooler allowing a consistent level of power at high temperatures.

A roof-mounted intake reminiscent of the race car engine air intake has been added for the Mk II to feed auxiliary engine, clutch and transmission coolers, giving the Mk II optimal cooling for the most extreme track day duty.

Increased engine power is paired with improved stopping power. The Mk II features braking performance beyond that of the GT race car by utilising the street car’s carbon ceramic brakes, including 15.5-inch front and 14.1-inch rear Brembo brakes. Unique forged aluminium 19-inch wheels cover the massive brakes with race-proven Michelin Pilot Sport GT tyres.

Joining a winning GT family member
The Ford GT production car, which made its first Goodwood appearance in 2017, is the most advanced and exclusive Ford road car ever, limited to volumes of no more than 250 a year, globally. Built for the 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race, the Ford GT racing car has been a great success for Ford, winning the GTE Pro class at Le Mans on its first attempt in 2016, exactly 50 years on from the first of 4 successive Le Mans victories for the original GT40 at Le Mans.

The production Ford GT. Although the original plan was to make 500 cars, 1,350 cars will be produced over 6 years from 2017 to 2022.

Mazda has introduced a limited edition variant of its sports coupe that it calls, MX-5 Z-Sport. This nomenclature was last used with the 3rd generation MX-5 back in 2007. The car gets a deep cherry red fabric hood, 17-inch black BBS wheels, and Machine Grey Metallic paintwork.

As for the interior, it gets Sand Leather seats, Z-Sport floor mats and scuff plates. On top of that, each car comes with an individually numbered Z-Sport plaque on the dash. Made exclusively for the UK market, Mazda has limited production of the Z-Sport to just 300 cars.

Like the base car, it is powered by a 2.0-litre 160bhp engine, has a limited slip differential, Bilstein dampers and a strut brace. Its predecessor, was graced with similar specs. It had the same capacity engine, 17-inch BBS wheels, Radiant Ebony Mica paint, brushed aluminium dash inserts, alloy pedals and stitching on the steering wheel, gear knob and handbrake.

Commenting on the launch of the new MX-5 Z-Sport, Jeremy Thomson, Managing Director Mazda Motors UK said, “The MX-5’s new cherry coloured roof was shown for the first time in public at the recent Tokyo Motor Show where it received a very positive reception.”

Though the Z-Sport isn’t that dissimilar from the MX-5 sold in Malaysia, we do hope that more variants of the car are offered to markets outside the UK and Japan. Fans of the brand and car outside these markets, would definitely be delighted to know that Mazda is looking out for them as well.
