Lamborghini Squadra Corse’s track-only hypercar, the Lamborghini SCV12, has completed its development programme and is now ready to hit the track for its world premiere in the near future. It is propelled by with the most powerful V12 naturally aspirated engine from Lamborghini to date, capable of generating over 830 bhp, thanks to aerodynamic supercharging at high speed.

Lamborghini SCV12

The SCV12 – designed by the in-house Lamborghini Centro Stile – benefits from Lamborghini Squadra Corse’s GT motorsport expertise, using its racing experience to produce increased aerodynamic efficiency and higher downforce levels than a GT3 car.

Its front bonnet has a double air intake and a central rib directing airflow to the ram-air intake scoop located on the roof. This directs dynamic air pressure created by the car’s movement to increase static air pressure in the engine’s intake manifold, creating greater airflow through the engine and increasing power.

Aerodynamic efficiency enhanced
The car’s clear track intent and aerodynamic efficiency is further enhanced by the prominent splitter at the front, lateral flicks and vertical fins on the side sills, while at the rear is a custom-built carbonfibre rear wing.

Lamborghini SCV12

Lamborghini SCV12

Racing solutions developed
Several aspects of the SCV12 have been developed particularly for the hypercar, with specific racing solutions devised by Squadra Corse engineers. These included a new fully carbonfibre chassis that allows for a greater power-to-weight ratio as well as the best handling and circuit driving experience.

The lightweight chassis with rear-wheel drive incorporates a sequential 6-speed gearbox as a structural element within the chassis, reducing weight and enhancing weight distribution. Pushrod rear suspension is system installed directly on the gearbox, while power is delivered on the track courtesy of specially developed slick Pirelli tyres fitted on magnesium rims.

A limited edition, the SCV12 will be assembled entirely within the Lamborghini Squadra Corse factory in Sant’Agata Bolognese. Customers will become members of a very exclusive club and can participate in advanced driving programmes at some of the world’s most prestigious circuits. There will also be technical assistance from Squadra Corse engineers and the special tutoring of Emanuele Pirro, 5-time winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans and Lamborghini Squadra Corse Special Projects Consultant.

Long before the luxury SUVs of today appeared in showrooms, there was just the Range Rover in the segment that had yet to be created. It was introduced 50 years ago in June 1970, a product at the top of the Land Rover Range which even the Queen of England appreciated.

Over five decades, the Range Rover has been a pioneer of all-wheel drive technologies, achieved many world firsts and completed numerous impressive feats. It was the first SUV to feature a permanent 4WD system when it was launched and, in 1989, was the world’s first 4×4 to be fitted with ABS. Three years later, it became the world’s first 4×4 to be fitted with electronic traction control and automatic electronic air suspension. In 2012, the latest generation Range Rover became the world’s first SUV to feature an all-aluminium lightweight construction, making it lighter, stronger and more efficient.

Range Rover

A must-have in the garages of many rich and famous owners, the Range Rover has also made a name for itself as a very capable all-terrain vehicle. It has crossed the notoriously impassable ‘Darien Gap,’ a remote and dangerous area between Panama and Colombia. It has been used by adventurers to explore new territory on the planet and has even been a winner in the Paris-Dakar rally – twice. And  it was the first vehicle to ever be displayed at the Louvre Museum in Paris.

Range Rover

To celebrate 50 years of a motoring icon, a Range Rover Fifty edition of the fourth generation has been created, restricted to just 1,970 vehicles globally, in recognition of the year the original Range Rover was launched. Building on the luxuriously appointed Autobiography, the Range Rover Fifty features a number of bespoke exterior accents in Auric Atlas as well as two unique 22-inch wheel designs.

Range Rover Fifty

The badging features a ‘Fifty’ script created personally by the ‘Guardian of Land Rover DNA’, Professor Gerry McGovern, Land Rover Chief Creative Officer, which will appear on the exterior of the vehicle and throughout the interior on the unique ‘1 of 1970’ centre console commissioning plaque, headrests, dashboard and illuminated treadplates.

“In the world of luxury vehicles, the Range Rover has always stood apart as peerless and enduring,” said Prof. McGovern. “Its unique and pioneering sensibilities, together with an unrivalled engineering approach, have been the intrinsic values which our customers have admired since the first of the breed was revealed in 1970.”

The Range Rover Fifty will be available in both standard and long wheelbase body designs with customers able to choose from four carefully curated exterior colours. Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations is also offering the Range Rover Fifty in one of three Heritage exterior solid paints reproduced from the original Range Rover paint palette of Tuscan Blue, Bahama Gold and Davos White.

A range of powertrain options will be available – petrol, diesel and even a plug-in hybrid P400e version. For customers in North America, each example will be fitted with a 518 bhp 5-litre supercharged V8 powertrain.

Things are certainly picking up in the car industry as increasing activity is evident. New models that may have been delayed are now appearing in showrooms to revitalise interest among car-buyers.

The latest is from Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) which has just launched the UNITED range. Consisting of the Passat and Tiguan, the limited edition range celebrates ‘the strength of unity, a trait deeply embedded in the Volkswagen brand’.

VW Original Accessories

Volkswagen Original Accessories added
Two new unique items from Volkswagen Original Accessories are introduced with the UNITED models: dynamic wheel hub caps with a self-levelling logo that stays upright while the car is in motion, and LED door lights that project the Volkswagen logo when the front doors are opened (Passat only).

The Passat UNITED is priced at RM193,856 and comes with accessories worth a total of RM12,000. Additional accessories include aluminium sports pedals and side scuff plates, new 19-inch Verona alloy wheels, VW Tint and the UNITED emblem.

VW Tiguan

Priced at RM166,108, The Tiguan UNITED has a front sports bumper, rear spoiler, chrome boot garnish, load lip protector, chrome exhaust tip, VW tint and the UNITED emblem, all worth RM4,000.

VPCM Managing Director Erik Winter explained that the UNITED range is introduced as a symbol of solidarity rooted within the brand. “While there is a connection between our UNITED range and Volkswagen’s involvement in football, the significance of the name and what it represents could not be more relevant today, with the challenges we are facing. Additionally, a core principle of the Volkswagen brand is #wenotme, which emphasises on unity and togetherness,” he said.

With the sales tax exemption recently announced by the government, it’s obviously the best time to buy a Volkswagen, especially as these two are locally assembled models which are given 100% exemption of the tax.

‘Mach 1’ – the speed of sound – would sound like a good name for any performance car, and Ford did just that for its high-performance variant of the Mustang when it was still in its first generation. The iconic fastback coupe debuted during the first golden era of musclecars, about 4 years after the Mustang was born.

The ’Mach 1’ badge was used only for the Sportsroof bodystyle, which was the name term Ford used for the fastback shape. Although having the same wheelbase as the other variants, the Mach 1 had extended front and rear overhangs and was longer than the other bodystyles.

1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1

“Mach 1 has always been that bridge between base Mustangs and the Shelby models,” said Ted Ryan, Heritage Brand Manager, Ford Archives. “From a style and handling perspective, the original Mach 1 managed to stand out as unique, even in the Mustang line-up – and as the name implies, it could really move.”

It was available during the first two generations of the Mustang line-up between 1968 and 1978 and then disappeared until the fourth generation offered a Mach 1 variant in 2003 and 2004.

Perfrmance-oriented limited edition
In early 2021, Ford will bring back the Mach 1 as an additional performance-oriented variant of the Mustang which is the world’s bestselling sportscar. It will have a naturally aspirated 5.0-litre V8 and be track-ready. From the pictures of the prototype, it appears that the new Mach 1 won’t have its own bodystyle but Ford says it will be a limited edition.

2021 Ford Mustang Mach 1

“Mach 1 has a special place in Mustang history, and it’s time for this special edition to claim the top spot in our 5.0-litre V8 performance line-up and reward our most hardcore Mustang enthusiasts who demand that next level of power, precision and collectability,” said Dave Pericak, Director, Ford Icons. “Like the original, the all-new Mustang Mach 1 will be true to its heritage, delivering great looks and as the most track-capable 5.0-litre Mustang ever.”

2021 Ford Mustang Mach 1

Like the earlier Mach 1 generations, the new model is expected to deliver performance and improved dynamics. Those early cars had upgraded suspension and brakes and it is likely that the 2021 Mach 1 will also have upgrades like Brembo brakes to uphold its performance legacy.

For the 50th anniversary of the legendary Nissan GT-R, the company commissioned ItalDesign to design a special version of the sixth generation of the model. Until now, renderings and pictures of a prototype have been shown and now we get to see the first production-ready version that is known as the GT-R50 by Italdesign.

Unveiled at the Tazio Nuvolari Circuit in Italy recently, it is the first of 50 units that will be built, each priced from €990,000 (about RM4.71 million). Nissan says most are already taken up and the first customers will start getting their cars from the end of this year.

2020 Nissan GT-R50 by ItalDesign

Powering each GT-R50 by Italdesign is a NISMO-tuned 720 ps/780 Nm hand-built 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V6 (VR38DETT). The engine draws on Nissan’s extensive GT3 competition experience and knowledge.

The E-TS ATTESA all-wheel drive system delivers power to all four 21-inch wheels. The suspension has been revised with a Bilstein DampTronic system and an upgraded Brembo braking system replaces the standard on for stronger stopping power.

Twenty years ago, with the Y2K computer glitch reduced to the punchline of the year, technology in another corner took a big leap as a small sedan appeared in the automotive landscape in America. It was the Toyota Prius, the world’s first production car with a hybrid powerplant consisting of a small internal combustion engine which worked with an electric motor.

First Generation Toyota Prius
The original Prius

First Generation Toyota Prius

The Prius would profoundly change the trajectory of automotive propulsion evolution and prepare motorists for the transition to electric vehicles. Over the next two decades, Toyota would go on to sell more than 6 million Prius hybrids worldwide, with more than 3.6 million total hybrid models (including Lexus) sold in the USA alone.

And so, on its 20th anniversary in America, Toyota has come out with 2,020 units of a special anniversary version. The cars will be offered in Supersonic Red or Wind Chill Pearl and feature striking black exterior trim and unique features, including a colour-keyed rear spoiler.

Toyota Prius 2020 Edition

There are also black inserts for the 17-inch alloy wheels, black-out headlight components and trim, B-pillars and mirror housings. Also unique to the Prius 2020 Edition, as it is known, are a ‘2020’ insignia key glove/fob and floormats, as well as black shift knob and interior A-pillar trim and smoked air vents.

For the latest Prius, Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 (TSS) is now available, providing the driver with more assistance that can help avoid accidents. The Pre-Collision System is now enhanced with Low-Light Pedestrian Detection while the forward sensors can detect bicyclists.

Toyota Prius 2020 Edition

Toyota Hybrid System II

The foundation of Prius efficiency is the Toyota Hybrid System II (shown above). It operates much in the same fashion as the original hybrid system but is more compact, more powerful, and more fuel-efficient. Today’s system uses a high-efficiency 1.8-litre 4-cylinder Atkinson-cycle petrol engine working with two motor-generators through an electronically controlled planetary-type continuously variable transmission (CVT).

The advanced Power Control Unit is the key to extracting the greatest efficiency from the powertrain. In most situations, the Prius launches on battery power alone and then seamlessly starts the petrol engine and blends its output once underway, turning it off when its power is not needed.

After 20 years, the Prius has reached its fourth generation which sits on the Toyota New Global Architecture-K platform (TNGA-K). It is the most efficient and quietest Prius ever offered and is available as a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) as well as an AWD-e variant with all-wheel drive.

Lotus Cars has launched four new limited-edition versions of the Elise, each with a distinctive colour palette which pays tribute to the company’s pioneering and highly successful racing history. The exterior colour combinations are black and gold; red, white and gold; blue, red and silver; and blue and white.

The famous black and gold references the livery of the Lotus Type 72D which Emerson Fittipaldi raced to five victories over the course of the 1972 Formula 1 season. Red, white and gold echoes the Type 49B that Graham Hill raced in 1968, while the blue, red and silver is inspired by the Lotus Type 81 of 1980 driven by Nigel Mansell, Elio de Angelis and Mario Andretti.

Lotus Elise Heritage Edition

The fourth new Elise, finished in blue and white, is in tribute to the Lotus Type 18 design from 1960. Exactly 60 years ago, it was the first Lotus car to achieve a Formula 1 pole position and victory, thanks to the late Sir Stirling Moss, at the Monaco Grand Prix.

Officially called the Elise Classic Heritage Editions, all four offer an enhanced exterior and interior spec over the Elise Sport 220 on which they’re based. They are on sale now across selected international markets, with only 100 units available globally.

As well as their unique colour schemes – instantly recognisable by motorsport fans worldwide – each car comes with an exclusive numbered ‘build plaque’ on the dashboard referencing the limited production run. The final numbers of each variant will be dictated by customer demand.

Lotus Elise Heritage Edition

Each car has as standard a number of features which were previously on the options list. These include DAB digital radio with four speakers, air-conditioning, cruise control, ultra-lightweight forged alloy wheels with racing livery finish, two-piece disc brakes and black carpet with floor mats.

The Elise interior colour pack is also now integrated as standard. Elements include the upper door trim and central seat insert finished to match the exterior, with detailing on the door, gear selector surround and dashboard picking out key colours. The only one that’s different is the blue and white car, which has red alcantara seat centres.

Lotus Elise Heritage Edition

Optional extras include a fibreglass hardtop roof, lightweight lithium-ion battery and titanium lightweight exhaust.

All four cars cost exactly the same in the UK at £46,250 (about RM247,000), about 16% more than a standard Elise Sport 220. However, the added features, said to be worth £11,735 (about RM62,500) certainly makes it very good value for money – not to mention the exclusivity.

After two years, Bugatti Divo hyper sportscar will be delivered to customers starting this year with the development process now entering its final phase. Only 40 will be built, each with a base price of 5 million euros.

“At the beginning of 2018, our aim was to develop a particularly sporty vehicle as the first project under the leadership of new Bugatti President, Stephan Winkelmann. We had lengthy discussions – and above all we listened to our customers. Some of them were longing for an agile and corner-hungry car. That’s definitely what the Divo has turned out to be,” recalled Pierre Rommelfanger, project manager for limited edition models at Bugatti.

A short time later, a small team of experts began development. The goal they set themselves was clear: the Divo was to be very different from the Chiron in exclusivity and performance – without sacrificing comfort and supremacy.

Bugatti Divo

Within a few months an initial design model was created and presented to Chiron owners in France, with explanations provided in one-on-one discussions. “Every Divo customer owns a Chiron, knows what the brand stands for and is a true Bugatti enthusiast. Our customers instantly understood the sporty approach of the Divo and supported our project,” said Winkelmann proudly.

Over 5,000 kms of chassis development
The Divo is powered by the 1,500 ps/1,600 Nm 8.0-litre W16 engine which can rocket the Divo from 0 to 100 km/h in a claimed 2.4 seconds. To achieve this, the engineers did extensive computer simulations to know the exact axle load data and used the figures to design the chassis set-up. The first prototype was run on various testing grounds, winding roads and racetracks. Over 5,000 kms were covered across all speed ranges up to 380 km/h to carry out chassis development.

Bugatti Divo

Bugatti Divo

Agility was gained by having less weight (35 kgs lower than the Chiron), more downforce and a more direct chassis set-up. This includes a change in wheel camber on the front and rear axles, harder springs and a more front-oriented balance. As a result, the Divo’s top speed is limited to 380 km/h.

The engineers made full use of the weight reduction to increase downforce, going to the limit of the tyres’ load capacity. This gives the Divo 90 kgs more downforce, increasing to 456 kgs at maximum speed.

“The Divo is entirely different to drive than the Chiron, even though both are fitted with the powerful W16 engine. This is particularly evident when driving on roads with plenty of bends. With even more precise steering and greater downforce, the Divo drives through corners even faster and more predictably,” explained Lars Fischer, Head of Chassis Testing and Application.

Bugatti Divo

Optimum aerodynamics
Particular effort was focussed on developing the aerodynamic properties of the Divo. The bonnet has air inlets that reduce the frontal area of the vehicle and improve the airflow. An optimised air curtain provides enhanced air ducting in the front and rear areas of the sides. Meanwhile, the newly shaped front spoiler serves to increase downforce, directing more air to the front air intakes. This supplies the cooling system with a greater air mass and increases overall cooling capacity.

Four independent air sources on each side of the car cool the brakes. Air comes from the high-pressure area above the front bumper, from the intakes on the front wings, from the intake at the front radiator and from the diffusers in front of the tyres. Blades guide the cold air onto the brake discs, while a heat shield directs the hot air directly through the wheels to the outside.

Bugatti Divo

The roof profile was optimised too. In conjunction with the modified rear end, a high air mass flow into the engine compartment is achieved, thereby benefiting temperature management. At the same time, these measures prevent the air above the car from swirling and developing turbulence at the rear wing. Its angle can be adjusted for individual driving modes and functions as an air brake too.

Differentiated from the Chiron
In terms of design, too, the Divo is clearly differentiated from the Chiron yet still instantly recognisable as a Bugatti. The design team under Achim Anscheidt have configured the body form of the Divo for lateral acceleration, focusing on optimum aerodynamic and thermodynamic efficiency.

The extremely compact and lightweight LED headlights have a flat light aperture of only 35 mm and are particularly striking, as are the highly complex 3D tail light modules. These form part of the rear grille, which is partly produced using a 3D printing process and has special lightweight fins. A total of 44 of these fins illuminate to form the tail light system.

Bugatti Divo

Bugatti Divo

Inside the car, sports seats with high side bolsters hold the occupants securely in their seats even when cornering at very high speeds. The steering wheel is partially covered in Alcantara and has enlarged steering wheel-mounted shift paddles on both sides.

About the hypercar’s name
With the Divo, Bugatti continues its tradition of naming cars after legendary racing drivers. In this case, the hypercar’s name honours Albert Divo, a French pilot and racing driver and, for some time, also a works driver for Bugatti. Among other things, he won the Targa Florio in 1928 and 1929. The legendary event, which was held annually on a mountain track in Sicily up until 1977, was certainly one of the toughest endurance races of its time. Bugatti won the race 5 times in a row with the Type 35.
