Sime Darby Motors

Sime Darby Motors represents (through its subsidiaries) a number of different automotive brands and as part of its commitment to principals, it has to provide a high standard of sales and aftersales support. Besides showrooms, Sime Darby Motors also has a Centralised Body and Paint Centre located in Bukit Jelutong, Selangor, to provide repair and refinishing services.

The Sime Darby Motors centre was recently accredited to the Volvo Certified Damage Repair (VCDR) standard for such facilities. This means it meets the high standards set and required by the Swedish carmaker for such services. The VCDR standard involves the use of a state-of-the-art body repair system and advanced tools, including a fast and highly accurate 3D sensor-equipped measuring system. An efficient paint booth setup was also put in place, creating a well-ventilated and dust-free environment.

Automotive brands from China are not new to the Malaysian market and were already selling their products 20 years ago, mainly in the commercial vehicle sector. In recent years, perhaps encouraged by the partnership Geely was able to form with DRB-HICOM in Proton, more brands are making their appearance.

Among them will be BYD Automobile (BYD stands for ‘Build Your Dreams’), which will be distributed by Sime Darby Motors (SDM) Malaysia. The two companies have formalized the partnership with the signing of a Distribution Agreement which also involves PT. BYD MOTOR INDONESIA.

With a number of its units selling different brands of electric vehicles (EVs), it is in Sime Darby Motors Malaysia’s interest to support the development of an EV charging network This will benefit its growing customer base as well as help in promoting the adoption of EVs in Malaysia. Brands handled by Sime Darby Motors units which offer EVs are BMW and MINI, Porsche and Volvo.

The company has identified locations for EV charging stations at every 200 to 300 kilometres along highways across Peninsular Malaysia to ensure all high-density areas are in range of such facilities. The initiative includes ensuring the availability of support services for all existing and new customers who have purchased an EV from a Sime Darby Motors company.

Taking the lead in this project is Auto Bavaria, the longest-serving and largest BMW authorised dealership group in Malaysia, in operation since the late 1980s. Leveraging on its extensive network of direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) fast chargers, a total of 33 charging facilities are already operational across the Klang Valley, Penang, and Johor.

Sime Darby Motors EV charging network

Sime Darby Motors’ network of chargers will be available for booking via the GO TO-U digital experience platform for e-mobility application by a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tenaga Nasional Berhad, TNBX Sdn Bhd. The GO TO-U application affords Sime Darby Motors EV owners the convenience of pre-booking EV charging stations, connecting with local businesses within walking distance, and enjoying added services such as battery health checks, scheduled maintenance and customer support.

Members of the public or non-Sime Darby Motors EV owners are also able to use the GO TO-U application to book EV charging stations in Sime Darby Motors’ network.

As part of the company’s drive to continuously enhance services for customers, Sime Darby Motors EV owners are eligible to receive a 10-year waiver on membership fees via the GO TO-U app worth RM2,400. In addition, special DC charging rates and free charging at AC chargers will be available until December 31, 2022.

For those who did not purchase an EV from a Sime Darby Motors unit, there will be a membership fee waiver, special DC charging rates and free charging at AC charging points, until December 31, 2022.

“Sime Darby Motors remains focused on our energy-efficient drive as a leading automotive player in Malaysia. We are on track with our plans to populate our roads and highways with EV charging stations to help accelerate the adoption of EVs. We are also pleased to offer a uniquely Sime Darby Motors’ customer experience for Sime Darby Motors EV owners, which promises an enriching EV experience across all Sime Darby Motors brands,” said Sime Darby Motors Malaysia Retail & Distribution Managing Director, Jeffrey Gan.

“This will be a game-changer for our EV customers and for us as well, with data analytics that will be made available. We are excited to bring innovative automotive experiences to our customers as we play our part in furthering the country’s aspirations for a low carbon mobility future,” added Mr. Gan.

The F-PACE, Jaguar’s first SUV, has been in the global market since 2016 and over the past 6 years, it has been selling well and even winning the overall World Car of the Year award in 2017. It appeared in Malaysia in 2018 and like many SUVs in the premium luxury segment, it has not had a shortage of buyers.

With its success, it’s clear that the F-PACE ticks all the right boxes for customers and has been a well designed and engineered product from the outset. But it has been 6 years and in an industry where someone is introducing something new every month, periodic refreshing of the looks and enhancing the features list is necessary to keep the model fresh.

Jaguar Land Rover Malaysia (JLRM) has now begun selling the 2022 model of the F-PACE which has some cosmetic changes on the outside and updated features within. While the overall form and profile are unchanged, the sculpted bonnet has a wider power bulge for a stronger presence.

The lighting units are new and super-slim (10 mm slimmer) all-LED quad headlights that give stronger illumination. At the same time, they also create greater visual width. The lights have a ‘Double J’ signature graphic formed with the Daytime Running Lights to identify the F-PACE from a distance.

At the rear, the new tailgate accentuates the visual width of the vehicle and below it is a redesigned lower bumper. The new fully LED rear lights with sculpted lenses are inspired by the fully electric I-PACE and feature Jaguar’s chicane graphic.

The cabin of the F-PACE has an elegant ambience merged with elements of engineering ingenuity. The revised cockpit area has a bolder, more dynamic look with greater focus on the driver. The new Drive Selector epitomises Jaguar’s approach to contemporary controls. The soft upper trim wraps round the ‘palm grip’ and proudly features a ‘cricket-ball’ stitch, inspired by iconic British craftsmanship. Below, the precision-engineered metal cradle is sculpted for added tactility and an engaging quality feel.

The centrally mounted 11.4-inch curved-glass HD touchscreen is the control centre for the new Pivo Pro infotainment system. Besides more intuitive operations, it also provides greater clarity for ease of viewing in any lighting conditions. Its simplified menu structure (mimicking a smartphone interface) allows the driver to carry out 90% of common tasks within two taps from the home screen. This reduces the time spent looking towards the display panel, which is safer when driving.

The Pivo Pro system can also connect to compatible smartphones using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto which can put favourite apps like Waze or Spotify on the display panel, and they can be operated from the touchscreen. The wireless approach extends to charging too as there is a charging pad available.

Though the cabin size is unchanged, there is a feeling of extra spaciousness with softer forms and dramatic contrasting use of colour at eye-level. One trick used by the interior designers: light-coloured finishes on lower sections of the cabin which immerse the interior in one tone, visually enhancing the sense of space.

The 5-seater cabin has exquisitely crafted leather upholstery with the rear seats having a 40:20:40 division so that there is flexibility to carry extra cargo or people. With the seats folded, there’s a long floor all the way to the back seats, ideal for bringing home furniture packs from IKEA.

“By offering modern luxury with this latest evolution of the award-winning F-PACE, we are raising the bar even further with this best-in-class SUV, which combines practicality, performance and comfort with a distinctive look and cutting-edge technologies. Everything in the design and the specifications, from the sleeker silhouette and all-new Drive Selector to the spacious and luxe interior equipped with an intuitive infotainment system, are all geared towards ensuring an enriched driving experience,” said Syed Ahmad Muzri Syed Faiz, Managing Director of Jaguar Land Rover Malaysia.

“Tapping into the positive growth prospects for the luxury car segment as well as  the SUV segment in Malaysia, the Jaguar F-PACE bridges both worlds as a globally renowned premium SUV. This is part of Sime Darby Motor's continuous expansion of our range of vehicles through new and exciting models,” added Jeffrey Gan, Managing Director, Retail and Distribution of Sime Darby Motors Malaysia.

Priced from RM598,800 (inclusive of sales tax but without roadtax, registration fees and insurance) the latest F-PACE is available only in the R-Dynamic version. This has a 2-litre 4-cylinder 250 ps/365 Nm Ingenium petrol engine.

Jaguar Land Rover Malaysia showroom upgraded and now has Robot Assistants!

The latest Jaguar XF is now available from Jaguar Land Rover Malaysia (JLRM), the model updated with a new distinctive exterior design and enhanced interior. Priced from RM498,800 (with 10% sales and service tax, but excluding roadtax, registration fees and insurance), the new Jaguar XF will be available in the R-Dynamic version. Orders are now accepted at the showrooms.

This version comes with a revised front-end design that features a new grille with a repositioned ait intake. The Full LED headlights not only provide strong illumination but also a ‘Double J’ visual signature to identify the XF from afar. The rear bumper profile has also been given a sleek profile.

2022 Jaguar XF

The enhanced interior maintains the luxury and comfort for which all Jaguar models are known. Its dynamic and bold cockpit design has been devised with the driver’s experience in mind. The cockpit has a sportier centre console that merges into the dashboard.

A wider 11.4-inch curved glass HD full colour touchscreen is now provided and besides being 48% larger than before, it is also 3 times brighter for enhanced clarity. The latest Pivi Pro infotainment system has a simplified menu structure that streamlines access to common tasks from the home screen in two taps or less.

With enhanced connectivity, using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, drivers can easily connect their smartphones to the touchscreen and use popular apps from the screen. There is now a wireless charging pad for compatible smartphones, making it unnecessary to have cables.

Other notable features with the latest XF include the segment-first Active Road Noise Cancellation technology which can help to reduce the noise levels within the cabin. The technology can lower disruptive noise peaks by 10 decibels and overall noise levels by 3 to 4 decibels. The system, which employs technology developed by Silentium, works like the noise cancellation systems in headphones. Tyre and road noise are constantly monitored by sensors on all 4 wheels and an opposite frequency is generated (through the Meridian sound system) to cancel out the noises.

The new XF also benefits from the latest generation of driver assistance technology, providing alerts to the driver when there is a risk of an accident and taking action (like automatic braking) if the driver fails to act in time. Besides monitoring the position of the car in its lane and warning the driver when it starts to wander out of the lane, there is also a Driver Condition Monitor which will determine when the driver may be drowsy and recommend stopping for a break.

The version imported by JLRM has a 2-litre 4-cylinder Ingenium petrol engine powering the rear wheels. With an output of 250 ps/365 Nm, the claimed acceleration time from 0 to 100 km./h is within 7.1 seconds. Power delivery flows through Jaguar’s 8-speed automatic transmissions which also has a manual mode that the driver can use with shift paddles on the steering wheel.

“With performance at the heart of its DNA, the new Jaguar XF continues to redefine modern luxury. With its inspiring design, intuitive state-of-the-art technology and engaging dynamics, we are pleased to raise the bar once again to elevate the driving experience of our vehicles for customers,” said Syed Ahmad Muzri Syed Faiz, Managing Director of JLRM.

“We strive to offer world-class vehicles that suit the diverse needs and preferences of Malaysians. In line with this, the Jaguar XF is a mid-size luxury sedan that is best in its class, renowned for its superb performance. With continued robust growth in the luxury car market, we are confident that the latest model is a highly attractive option,” added Jeffrey Gan, Managing Director, Retail & Distribution, Sime Darby Motors Malaysia.

The latest XF appeared in the opening car chase action in ‘No Time to Die’, the James Bond movie that was screened last year.

According to Syed Ahmad Muzri Syed Faiz, Managing Director of Jaguar Land Rover Malaysia, this is part of its ambitious plan to improve service capabilities and drive long-term growth for the brand. JLRM’s consolidation exercise will put the company in a stronger position to serve its customers, whilst optimising retail and distribution costs, as well as overheads.

“This consolidation will be a positive move towards better operational efficiency with elevated levels of premium services which will help drive long-term growth for the company. These measures will leverage on the company’s vast experience and accumulated knowhow through the decades to strengthen its processes and deliver more value to our customers,” he added.

JLRM expects this consolidation to continue to elevate customer experiences, differentiating it from the mass premium brands. Making the purchase and ownership of cars as convenient as possible is important to retain customers so they continue with the brand the next time they replace or get an additional car. For many companies, providing convenience has been through making retail outlets 3S – offering sales, service and spare parts. In this way, they are a one-stop centre for all the customer’s needs, from the time of purchase through owning the vehicle.

Sime Darby Motors has gone further by not only having 3S outlets but also clustering them at one site so that customers can choose from a wider range of models from different brands without having to go to different locations. The site is the new Sime Darby Motors City located in the township of Ara Damansara within the Klang Valley, near Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (formerly Subang International Airport) which is claimed to be the largest automotive complex in Southeast Asia.

Porsche Centre Ara Damansara 2020

It is the realisation of an idea which has been considered for at least the past 30 years, perhaps gaining more relevance as the number of brands increased from the early ones such as Ford and BMW to now include Porsche, Hyundai, Jaguar, MINI, Motorrad (BMW motorcycles),  Land Rover and Volvo. Though operational for over a year now, the official opening of Sime Darby Motors City has taken place only today due to COVID-19 pandemic and Movement Control Orders which restricted public events.

6 showrooms plus pre-owned business unit
The complex of 6 flagship showrooms and service centres is built on 8.6 acres of Sime Darby land adjacent to the highway to the airport. The built-up area is considerable – 1.3 million square feet – with up to 8 levels, some of which are for the service centres.  It has a Green Building Index (GBI) certified facility built with sustainability in mind and incorporates technologies to cultivate a paperless organisational culture.

There is also an indoor facility with space for almost 100 vehicles that are managed by the Sime Darby Auto Selection unit dealing with pre-owned vehicles. Sime Darby Motors City also has mobility collaborations with SOCAR (a car-sharing network) and myTukar (an online used car trading platform).

Auto Bavaria has this special area for handover of new vehicles to customers.

First automotive facility with IoT
Each showroom has its own identity in keeping with the brand image, and aftersales services are provided with the highest standards, both in terms of equipment and personnel. Sime Darby Motors City is Malaysia’s first automotive facility that deploys Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, enabling improved service capacity, and supporting the company’s growth by accelerating efficiencies to deliver world-class services to its customers.

“As one of the key players in the automotive industry, Sime Darby Motors has always been committed to pursuing excellence as we strive to provide world-class services to our customers. The launch of Sime Darby Motors City is a testament to this steadfast commitment,” said Andrew Basham, Managing Director of Sime Darby Motors.

At the heart of the facility’s digital infrastructure is its Vehicle Tracking Management system which utilises a camera-based parking guide and customisable signages to ensure a higher level of guidance, security and convenience for the customer. It also allows for quicker collection of vehicles upon completion of service. Internally, the facility’s digitalised infrastructure communicates the status of each vehicle in real-time, ensuring greater efficiencies are achieved.

IoT-powered Automated Number Plate Recognition cameras have also been installed as part of a contactless self-check-in system, enabling customers’ appointment data to be accessed, upon their arrival. Concurrently, a service advisor will be alerted and automatically assigned to the customer, allowing for a seamless experience. The deployment of these technologies will be rolled out progressively throughout Sime Darby Motors City.

Customers visiting showrooms and service centres can relax and have snacks and drinks or even do work in comfortable surroundings.

RM570 million was spent on building Sime Darby Motors City so it is not a project that may be replicated in other parts of the country. “We have no plans for another similarly sized complex but we could explore other approaches in future,” said Jeffrey Gan, Managing Director, Retail and Distribution for Malaysia, Sime Darby Motors.

Future-ready for EV era
With an eye on the future of the business, Sime Darby Motors City is future-ready as the automotive industry continues to evolve towards EV. It is equipped with specialised EV-certified technicians and designated areas for EV charging, storage and repairs, which are currently available at Auto Bavaria, Auto Hyundai, Auto Performance and Swedish Auto, all of which have brands that offer electrified models.

Sime Darby Auto Performance, which represents the Porsche brand, has installed Malaysia’s first fast Direct Current (DC) high-performance charger, operational since September 2020, within its  Porsche Centre. Capable of delivering a maximum of 175 kW, it is able to provide a nearly full charge within 36 minutes, which is at least 8 times faster than the fastest Alternating Current (AC) charger available at 22 kW.

Grand Launch Weekend
This weekend (April 16 – 18) will be a good time to visit Sime Darby Motors City as there will be a ‘Grand Launch Weekend’ event with attractive deals at all the showrooms. However, it is recommended that those going there contact the showroom they wish to visit so that an appointment can be made. This is to adhere to the government’s COVID-19 Standard Operating Procedures on crowd control and physical distancing.

Sime Darby Motors has been building up its portfolio of automotive and automotive-related brands for many years, and today represents 31 brands in Asia and Australasia. Some 20 years ago, the Sime Darby unit tried to establish a shared approach for its brands but at that time, conditions were different and the idea was not so viable.

Today, that vision has been realised with Sime Darby Motors City in Ara Damansara, Selangor, where a number of brands are housed with sales and aftersales facilities available. Then Sime Darby Auto Selection was established to offer pre-owned vehicles, with an online channel as well.

Sime Darby Auto Selection service centre

For post-warranty vehicles
Now Sime Darby Auto Selection has also opened a multi-brand service centre, as part of the company’s strategy to offer a new aftersales service alternative, at a price point competitive with independent workshops, for post-warranty vehicles.

Located in Glenmarie, Selangor, the service centre offers owners the same quality of service provided by brand-specific authorised service centres. Utilising state-of-the-art equipment, the purpose-built facility is able to service and maintain vehicles of various brands. It has highly-trained and skilled technicians who can provide quality workmanship.

Sime Darby Auto Selection service centre

“The opening of this new after-service facility is very timely to meet the changing demands of car owners, who are always on the lookout for alternatives after their car warranty expires. With this one-stop service centre, car owners – especially those with different car brands – will enjoy the convenience of a one-stop service centre that offers high quality service, at an unrivalled price,” said Jeffrey Gan, MD for Retail & Distribution, Sime Darby Motors Malaysia.

“Customers today are more knowledgeable and aware of the changing trends in the market. With the new and innovative Sime Darby Auto Selection Service Centre, we hope to instil customer confidence so that this becomes their go-to centre for all their vehicle maintenance needs,” he added.

Various services available
Apart from basic services such as engine oil replacement, tyre alignment and balancing, air-conditioner and car disinfection service, the service centre also offers repairs, car washes and vehicle inspections.

The 4,117 square foot facility has 6 service bays and an environment for customers to wait comfortably. Those unable to personally send in their vehicles can also arrange for pick-up and delivery service. It operates 6 days a week from Monday to Saturday.

Collaboration with SpareXHub
Meanwhile, Sime Darby Motors Malaysia has also teamed up with SpareXHub to offer vehicle owners an additional avenue to purchase genuine automotive spare parts at competitive prices.  The collaboration with the genuine spare parts e-commerce platform gives customers the ability to source, order and purchase original automotive spare parts of their preferred brands via a one-stop contactless platform from the comfort of their home or office.
