Like many companies in various industries across the country, UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) is abiding by the requirements of the full Movement Control Order (FMCO), which started on June 1, 2021, by temporarily suspending all its sales and manufacturing operations. However, while all non-essential services remain closed, Toyota and Lexus owners can still be assured of support for vehicle emergencies and breakdowns.

“The past few weeks have been challenging for all of us. During these difficult times, we at Toyota and Lexus stand with all of you in solidarity in our fight against the pandemic. We have temporarily shut down our non-essential services. At the same time, we understand that during this time of uncertainty, we can still be of assistance and support. This is why we continue to be here for vehicle emergencies and breakdown,’ said Ravindran K., President of UMW Toyota Motor.

Although Toyota and Lexus outlets are closed in compliance with the FMCO, owners can still get emergency assistance by calling the Hotline number below.

Warranty will be extended
He added that all vehicles purchased from UMW Toyota Motor or its authorised dealers nationwide which have warranties that are expiring during this period will enjoy a 30-day extension calculated from the last day of the MCO.

“We are extremely grateful to the Government for taking numerous intervention measures to not only safeguard Malaysians from the threat of the pandemic, but in introducing financial and industrial policies to ensure that the pandemic does not have a too severe impact on the economy. This includes a further extension of the SST (Sales & Service Tax) exemption which we believe has, and will continue, to contribute significantly towards restoring consumer purchasing confidence,” added UMW Toyota Motor’s Deputy Chairman, Akio Takeyama.

Recovering consumer purchasing confidence
UMWT has seen clear signs of consumer purchasing confidence improving with the sales of its Toyota and Lexus vehicles rising for many months now. In May, 7,595 units of vehicles from the two brands were delivered. The volume was largely driven by models such as the Vios sedan which accounted for 32% of sales, followed by the Yaris hatchback (25%) and the Hilux pick-up truck which contributed 21% of the units sold in May.

Vios was company’s bestselling model in May, accounting for about a third of total sales.

Mr. Takeyama added that the impact of the pandemic has been both unpredictable and unprecedented, but the introduction of several new models throughout the year combined with the SST incentives for consumers has helped the local automotive industry to navigate the storm in a position of strength.

Meanwhile, Mr. Ravindran said the company will continue to extend service excellence to all customers and continue to introduce numerous sales and aftersales initiatives to assist with savings in these difficult times. “We are here for you. This is an effort that is not only solely on the shoulders of the government, but it involves everyone and all stakeholders. We thank our customers for their continued support and in return, rest assured that we will continue to support you through these challenging times,” he said.

The Toyota Eco Youth (TEY) Program began 20 years ago and has become an annual event which UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) continues to run. Even the ‘new normal’ brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic did not dampen UMW Toyota  Motor’s efforts to cultivate environmental consciousness among Malaysia’s younger generation.

For its 20th year, the event has an aptly coined theme – Reimagining Mobility – to promote the spirit of inclusivity and freedom of ideas as the foundation for creation of safe and eco-friendly mobility, despite the challenges of the  pandemic.

Digital/online platform
In view of the pandemic conditions, the format has been revised to run on a fully online platform. Launched in January 2021  (for secondary school students aged 13 – 16 years old), it attracted the participation of 282 teams  from 177 schools, the highest ever participation recorded by the program.

The adaptability of the program into a digital/online platform has included interactive e-learning  lessons and workshops which proved to be highly effective. All in all, school teams were able  to showcase their ideas through impressively produced videos and online presentations.

Since last December, 16 shortlisted teams have been formulating their proposals which were  posted in social media channels for the public to view. Additionally, each team developed a  podcast episode presented on Spotify.

The final judging phase in April saw 10 finalists being selected and the winning teams will be chosen after making their respective ‘pitches’ through live presentations on May 29, 2021.

Waste and recycling themes
Addressing the issue of waste and recycling were popular themes for the proposals. Showcasing impressive capability for innovation and advanced technology, many schools put forward ideas for digital smart tools, supported by carefully built prototypes.

Prize money doubled
“As always, we are highly impressed by the quality of the projects and the innovative ideas  proposed. It is never easy for our judges to choose the best as everyone is a winner in their own way,” said President of UMW Toyota Motor, Ravindran K.

This year, UMWT has doubled the prize money to further reward ingenuity amongst the youth.  Winning teams stand a chance to win cash prizes from a RM64,000 prize pool.

About the Toyota Eco Youth program
The program began 20 years ago in collaboration with the Malaysian  Ministry of Education. Over the course of two decades, 258 schools, 1,910 secondary school students and 762 teachers. Have participated.

Each year, challenging and interesting themes have been provided, and participants have come  up with innovative solutions and proposals applicable to their school or community. Over RM7 million has been spent by UMWT to run the program annually.

An annual event that has the participation of secondary schools from all over the country.

UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) reported that it started off the second quarter of 2021 with strong sales of 9,280 vehicle for the Toyota and Lexus brands, a 12.7% increase over the number of vehicles delivered in March. The rising sales volume was largely driven by restored consumer purchasing confidence, with growing demand for the appealing new models such as the Corolla Cross and Harrier.

Furthermore, with the PENJANA sales tax exemption set to expire at the end of June this year, many are also not wasting the chance to save money.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in an extremely challenging year for both manufacturers and consumers, but measures put in place by the Government has successfully restored and strengthened consumer purchasing power,” said Akio Takeyama, Deputy Chairman of UMW Toyota Motor.

He also attributed the growth in sales to the timely introduction of numerous new models that have been able to firmly establish new benchmarks in the various vehicle segments by enhanced technological and safety features, styling and driving dynamics.

Network expansion continues
Although business may seem slow for now due to the pandemic, UMWT is not sitting still and preparing for the future with continued commitment for expansion and the enhancement of its sales and aftersales service network. It has opened a new 2S Sales and Service Centre in Cheras (PDC Automobile) and two new 3S Sales, Service and Spare Parts Centres in Johor Bahru and Terengganu.

Over the past few years, UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) has been transferring its own branch outlets to dealers and other interested parties to take over retail operations. The move, as explained in October 2017, has been to enhance operation excellence.

UMWT would increase intensity on high value-added upstream activities such as product development, marketing and dealer network support, while the dealerships would have greater focus on customer-related activities.

The Malaysian car industry has been dominated by distributor-owned outlets for decade, somewhat different from other markets where dealerships are more independent. This new move departs from that business model and has been ongoing for UMWT.

The 3S outlet at Section 19 in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, is now operated by Laser Motor instead of UMWT.

Two more of its branch outlets in the Klang Valley have been transferred to dealers with effect from today. The dealers are established companies with a long association with Toyota and UMWT. They are Laser Motor which takes over the Section 19 outlet in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, and Fokus Sentral which takes over the outlet in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur.

Assembly Services Sdn Bhd (ASSB), the wholly-owned subsidiary of UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd (UMWT) involved in the local assembly of Toyota vehicles, was recently visited by the Menteri Besar Selangor, Dato’ Seri Amirudin Bin Shari, who was there to personally view the facility’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Accompanied by the top management of UMWT and ASSB, the Menteri Besar was briefed on the best practices and procedures put in place in accordance with the government’s SOPs. During his tour of the plant, which currently assembles the Toyota Yaris and Vios models, he saw various areas such as the motorcycle parking section, staff locker rooms and canteen where changes have been made to meet social distancing requirements.

The ‘new normal’
In accordance with the SOPs, body temperature checks are conducted daily, with hand sanitization and utilization of face masks are made part of the ‘new normal’. In the canteen, the seating has been rearranged to provide distancing and the menu now consists of pre-packed food. Besides staggering working times, new procedures aimed at minimizing interaction so as to reduce the risks of coronavirus spread have also been adopted.

ASSB has also adopted measures from Toyota plants in other countries in response to the pandemic. One example shown was the installation of an additional partition at the Door Assembly Process.

While at the plant, Dato’ Seri Amirudin also visited Toyota Boshoku UMW Sdn Bhd, a joint-venture between Toyota Boshoku and UMW Toyota Motor which makes seat sets, door trims, headlinings, package trays for use in many models assembled locally.

PPE production for frontliners
As it has suitable equipment, Toyota Boshoku UMW set up production lines to produce Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) which is required by medical staff treating COVID-19 patients. More than 10,000 PPE items consisting of Boot Covers, Head Covers and Gowns were provided by UMWT to the Ministry of Health for distribution to hospitals around the country.

A small ceremony was held for ASSB and Toyota Boshoku UMW to hand over PPE kits to the Menteri Besar as a gesture of goodwill to the Selangor state government. The kits consisted of 100 pieces each of gowns, head covers and boot covers.

UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd (UMWT) has announced that authorised Toyota and Lexus Sales & Service Outlets in its network that are located in areas observing the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) will be open for business from today (May 4, 2020).

The opening of the Sales & Service Outlets will be based on approval and regulations by the respective state governments. This follows approval from the Ministry of International Trade & Industry (MITI).

All outlets have received guidelines for their daily operations which must be in accordance with the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) issued by MITI. The SOP requires such measures as social distancing, sanitization of premises and contactless payments where possible.

While most Malaysians are remaining at home under the conditions of the Movement Control Order (MCO) which will run till April 28, 2020, there are many who are out carrying out duties that are vital to stop the spread of the COVID-19 virus. These are the frontliners who are also placing themselves at risk of getting infected.

The corporate sector has been providing support in various ways as this War Against COVID-19 is one which everyone has to play a part in. Where UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) is concerned, providing protective gear is one of the ways that can help the frontliners who travel in vehicles.

This morning, representatives from UMWT handed over 10,000 seat covers, gear knob covers and steering covers which can provide protection over surfaces in the vehicle. The recipients were the PDRM (Royal Malaysian Police) and the Malaysian Relief Agency (MRA). The handover took place at the MRA Warehouse in Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

Additionally, at UMWT’s various outlets, assistance in the form of food, facemasks and other essentials have been gathered and donated from their respective locations. For example, a dealership in Kuala Selangor has donated meals and water to police and armed forces personnel stationed in its vicinity.

With the extension of the Movement Control Order (MCO) by the government, UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) has announced that all authorised Toyota and Lexus dealerships will continue to remain closed.

However, the company reiterated that it continues to be contactable to all customers for any emergencies or enquiries during this period on its existing helplines as well as 5 additional helplines created for this period of time. Customers may contact the following numbers throughout the duration of the MCO.

Additionally, it was announced that all vehicles purchased from UMWT or their authorised dealers with existing warranties that are valid and expiring during this period will enjoy a 30-day extension calculated from the last day of the MCO.

All service appointments scheduled during this MCO period will be rescheduled after the MCO is lifted and when operations resume. It gives assurance to all customers that support, where necessary, will be provided during this period.

Following a global recall of a number of Toyota and Lexus models, UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd (UMWT) has announced a Special Service Campaign (SSC) to replace a fuel pump. In Malaysia, Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) has identified around 12,000 units of Toyota models (Alphard, Camry, Corolla, Innova and Fortuner) and 1,500 units of Lexus models (GS300, GS350, IS300, LC500/500H, LS460, LS500/500H, LS600H, NX200T/300H, RC350/300H, RX350/450H and RX350/450)

The vehicles were manufactured between 2013 and 2019 and distributed by UMWT. The company stresses that models not listed above are not affected by this recall.

Lexus NX is among the models which need to have the fuel pump replaced.

The issue with the fuel pump is that it may stop operating. If this were to occur, warning lights and messages may be displayed on the instrument panel, and engine power hesitation may happen. This may result in the vehicle stalling and being unable to restart. TMC is concerned that this could increase the risk of a crash while driving at higher speeds.

UMWT will officially notify affected vehicle owners to bring their vehicles in for the replacement of the fuel pump unit. There will be no charges for the parts and labour involved in this SSC.
