Better known for its MPV and commercial vehicles, Maxus also has a representative in the pick-up truck segment in Malaysia. This is the T60 which it has been selling since mid-2019, and which has now been updated to become a better value-for-money proposition.

2022 Maxus T60

Complimentary Performance Kit

Besides cosmetic changes, there are feature upgrades as well as an improved powertrain. For a limited time, all bookings of the updated T60 will come with a complimentary new performance enhancement kit, dubbed the MAXUS Performance Kit. Worth RM3,000, the kit raises power to 155 bhp at 3000 rpm and boosts torque from the standard 360 Nm to 425 Nm between 1600 – 2300 rpm.

Though more powerful, the fuel consumption is actually better and where the standard engine is claimed to do 10.4 kms/litre, the uprated engine can go up to 11.1 kms/litre. With the 75-litre fuel tank, the T60 should be able to travel further before requiring refuelling – which would be welcome by those who venture deep into the jungle.

The Performance Kit is fitted to the same 2.8-litre, 16-valve, DOHC turbocharged (VGT) engine which meets Euro 4 emission standards. Power goes to all 4 wheels via the 6-speed PUNCH automatic transmission with a BorgWarner Electronically-Controlled Four-Wheel Drive System that has the usual 2H, 4H and 4L modes that can be selected while on the move. An Eaton mechanical differential lock is also provided as standard for better stability in difficult conditions.

The driver can also select from three drive models – Eco, Power and Normal – to suit the driving conditions. The Eco mode is claimed to stretch the mileage by 2% (compared to the default Normal mode) while the Power mode is said to give a 5% increase in performance.

In addition to the complimentary Performance Kit, the T60 comes with 17-inch wheels. The previously available 19-inch wheels are still available as optional equipment basis for an extra RM3,000.

Safety like a car

The T60 has high safety standards and when it was introduced, it raised the bar in its segment as the only 4×4 pick-up that offered front and rear ventilated disc brakes and a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System. Besides that, it also has Bosch Electronic Stability Program, ABS, Electronic Brake Distribution, Traction Control System, and Brake Assist – all active safety systems commonly found in passenger cars.

Due to the higher centre of gravity of a pick-up truck, drivers need to be cautious when cornering fast. To provide safer cornering, the T60 has Roll Movement Intervention (RMI) which gives greater stability as well as improved traction at high speeds or in the event of emergency avoidance (lane-change) maneuvers. The RMI recognizes the threat of an impending roll-over from the various sensors and intuitively applies the brakes individually to counter the motion and return stability to the vehicle.  On steep slopes, the driver can press a button for assisted driving upwards or downwards.

Premium features inside

In the cabin, the atmosphere is passenger car-like with features like power-adjustable front seats, a multifunction steering wheel with integrated switches, 10-inch inch HD infotainment system with touchscreen (Android Auto /Apple CarPlay ready), pushstart button, and automatic air-conditioning.

Besides 15 storage areas around the cabin, the forward and rearward folding rear seats provide extra storage, while the overall cargo volume is 1,188 litres. For those who need still additional carrying capability, there’s an aluminium luggage rack.

The new T60 is priced from RM115,888 and, for a limited period, there is a RM1,500 rebate for all bookings received. Confident of the reliability and durability of the vehicle, Maxus offers a warranty of 5 years or maximum of 130,000 kms. For the first 4 years of ownership (or maximum of 80,000 kms), scheduled maintenance will be free with a complimentary service package that covers required parts, lubricants and labour charges.

“We are proud to announce that the 2022 model is not only refreshed in terms of looks, but also comes with performance options for the growing pick-up truck segment here in Malaysia. The CBU unit is the ideal balance of performance, capability, and safety, and offers the best value for money for a pick-up truck in the current market. We are fortunate our principal has given us priority and sufficient stock for us to supply the current demand here in the country,” said Syed Ammar Syed Azman, CEO of Weststar Automotive Division.

The economic propulsion in the Northern region was one of the key factors that encouraged Weststar Maxus to open its new 3S facility in Bukit Mertajam to provide the much-needed support to its present and future Maxus customers in the Northern states.

The new facility will act as the Weststar Maxus northern hub to provide quality service to its customers in Perak, Penang, Kedah and Perlis. With its expanded range of product and services packaged with exciting promotional campaigns, sales are expected to increase by at least 30%.

“We’re making a great leap forward to become a mainstream automobile player in Malaysia,” says Datuk Vikram Menon, Executive Director, the Weststar Group (below, right) “We now have refreshed and expanded award-winning models such as Maxus G10 and Maxus V80, and an expanding network of showrooms and after sales service facilities, to achieve our goal.”

Menon adds that the after-sales component is an integral part of its overall plan to grow the Weststar Maxus brand. This facility together with our appointed service dealers in the region are able to serve our customers with well trained technicians. Plans are afoot to open another 3S facility in Alor Star in the foreseeable future to consolidate Weststar Maxus’s presence in the Northern region.

The launch of the Bukit Mertajam facility also coincides with the unveiling of the 2018 Maxus V80 commercial van. The cost-competitive commercial van has the capacity to be customized to meet individual business needs. Among its growing number of fleet customers include Eco Coach Travel and Tours, DHL, Federal Express and FFM-Massimo. A huge fleet of these vans are already been operated by various government agencies including the Malaysian Armed Forces, Ministry of Health, Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur, among others.

The Maxus V80 boasts the highest space utilization rate, the best ground clearance, and the best interior height among its peers. It has also passed the world’s most rigid ECE automobile road tests in severe conditions including extreme low and high temperatures, and high altitudes. With the support and global resources of SAIC Automotive Co Ltd, China’s largest automobile company, the Maxus V80 carries its core parts and components from world renowned component suppliers.

The Maxus V80 panel van’s flexibility allows for customization and transformation for use as mobile offices, food and kitchen trucks, ambulances, mobile libraries, delivery vehicles, and mobile sales showrooms. The Maxus V80 window van’s platform as a full-sized transporter is a category leader in terms of its size and headroom space. The van can sit 15 people comfortably.

“We are shifting gears and committed to enhancing the quality gap by building affordable and fuel-efficient vehicles to meet Asean preferences,” notes Menon. “The new line of Maxus V80 vans comes with upgraded features and superior volume of space. It has all the trappings of a value-for-money commercial van that is truly ‘Built to Work’.” In today’s commercial vehicle market overloaded with expensive, interchangeable transporters and commercial vehicles, the Maxus V80 stands out admirably among its competitors.

As part of its green initiative, Weststar Maxus plans to launch the fully electric versions of the Maxus V80 known as EV80 in the near future. “This is a significant proposition for companies like Weststar Maxus seriously looking at lowering carbon footprint while concurrently manufacturing fully functional vehicles with competitive running costs,” Menon states.

To commemorate the unveiling of this new V80 Weststar Maxus is offering amazing incentives for Maxus V80 customers with 150,000 km free service with a three year warranty.  Free service for all Weststar Maxus models includes parts, labour, and lubricants.

Weststar Maxus, the sole distributor for the Maxus range of vehicles in Malaysia, has announced a bounty of attractive deals for Malaysians looking at luxury class family vehicles during the Ramadan and Hari Raya season up to 31 July. Also, as part of its campaign, all Weststar Maxus branches are offering customers an opportunity to trade their existing MPV for a brand new Maxus G10. “We offer the highest trade-in value compared to the market standard and other used car dealers,” confirms Tan Sri Syed Azman Syed Ibrahim, Group Managing Director, the Weststar Group. “It is an excellent deal for families looking for a ‘people mover’ that can easily accommodate 10 people.”

As an extension of its campaign, Weststar Maxus is now offering a five-year warranty (up to 120,000 km mileage) with two years free servicing covering parts and labour for new Maxus G10 customers. The warranty, based on positive market response, is aligned to the current market practice. “We’re making a great leap forward to become a mainstream player in Malaysia,” says Tan Sri Syed Azman. “Our goal is to build an extensive network throughout the country and offering services competitive with other leading industry players.”

Weststar Maxus has opened two new 3S (Sales, Service and Spare Parts) showrooms in Plentong, Johor Bharu and Bukit Mertajam, Penang, to serve its Southern and Northern customers. In the Central region, the Weststar Maxus Parts Centre based in Klang will operate 12 hours daily to ensure a fast turnaround and delivery time. There are also two new showrooms in Bangsar and Kota Bharu. To accelerate its marketing push, Weststar-Maxus has engaged a celebrity family – Awal Ashaari, Scha Alyahya and Lara Alana – as Maxus G10 brand ambassadors. The trio, famously known as “Schawalara”, are scheduled to share their Maxus G10 experience with their social media followers.

“The public image as a young, on-the-go family fits in perfectly with our brand proposition,” notes Tan Sri Syed Azman. “With more than 19 million followers on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, the celebrity family ranks as the most popular family in Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei.”

Weststar-Maxus plans to feature the family in its future advertising campaigns and a series of videos.

Awal is a well-known television presenter and actor while Scha is a popular actress, television host and model. Their daughter Lara is a reality television star and an Instagram sensation with four million followers, with the highest social media following for children under 13 years of age.

Weststar Maxus will also continue to offer the Maxus G10 and V80 commercial vehicles with zero percent GST pending the implementation of the Sales and Services Tax (SST) by the Government.

In the Ramadan spirit of giving, and with the Government’s revised GST to zero percent, Weststar Maxus, the sole distributor for the Maxus range of vehicles in Malaysia, has reworked its pricing for the range of G10 luxury “people mover” and V80 commercial vehicles with 0% GST effective immediately.

The price reductions ranging from RM5,000 to RM10,000 will remain in effect until end May pending the reimplementation of the Sales and Services Tax (SST) by the Government. “This initiative is aimed at making the full range of our vehicles more affordable to Malaysians,” says Tan Sri Syed Azman Syed Ibrahim, Group Managing Director, the Weststar Group. “We are now in an expansion phase and want to strengthen our brand and quality proposition to the widest target segments across the country.”

Plans are afoot to open two new showrooms within the next couple of months in Penang and Kota Bharu. Weststar Maxus also opened a showroom in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur, in February this year. “The marquee value of Weststar Maxus has gained considerable traction among family and commercial segments in the last two years, and we are confident that our product range has the price, quality, and features advantages to succeed as a premium brand,” notes Tan Sri Syed Azman.

The Maxus G10 range of luxury vehicles is powered by a 225Hp (165kW) 2.0T turbo-charged direct injection engine pared with a ZF 6-speed automated manual gearbox for smooth power output and swifter response to gear shifting. With a maximum of 345Nm on tap, the Maxus G10 SE delivers a similar power ratio as that of a 3.0L natural aspirated engine, but with 30 percent less fuel consumption.
