After two opening rounds in the Middle East, the 2023 Formula 1 World Championship is in Melbourne this weekend for the Rolex Australian Grand Prix. This event used to be the opening round for a long time but that ended in 2020, the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Although some teams had expressed reservations about participating as the pandemic began to look very serious, the organizers wanted to go ahead. It seemed like it was on until government authorities ordered the race to be cancelled – just 2 hours before the first practice was to be run.

In 2021, the Australian GP was again chosen as the opening round but due to the restrictions on travellers, it was moved to November, but cancelled in July. 2022 was the first year that the F1 round returned to Australia and a new contract extends the venue till 2035. The event will also be one of the first 3 rounds of each season, and will be the opening round for at least 5 seasons.

The smart brand was once in Malaysia, around 20 years ago, when DaimlerChrysler Malaysia (now Mercedes-Benz Malaysia) marketed it, but it was poorly received. Though its small size – which could only take two – was appreciated in European cities, it was too small for Malaysians who could get more seats and more space – for less money.

So smart faded away from the market and a decade later, declining sales in other markets also saw Mercedes-Benz, which owned the company, rethink its strategy for the brand. With the auto industry rushing towards electrification, it was logical for smart to also go in that direction. In fact, it had already started electrification earlier but needed a new generation of models developed from scratch as electric vehicles (EVs).

This led the German carmaker to team up with the Zhejiang Geely Holding Group in a new joint venture company which would use the smart brand, which still retained its trendiness. It looked like a smart (no pun intended) move as Mercedes-Benz would offer the design expertise while Geely would provide its Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) modular platform engineered specifically for EVs. Thus smart gained a ‘second wind’ and has been quick to roll out its first product, the smart #1.

Don’t you just feel annoyed every time you are forced to ‘chat’ with a bot for customer service? Most businesses use this bot feature to save on having to pay a salaried human, but this forces you to navigate through hundreds of steps before actually ‘chatting’ with a human being.

AirAsia has finally brought back its live call feature to ease the lives of its customers. People who have urgent matters can now get accurate answers faster. They have also launched a new feature for the super app called refund tracking.

Two years ago, a small American start-up called Alpha Motor Corporation drew attention with its retro-styled coupe powered only by electricity. It showed a few designs and, by the end of 2022, was granted US Patent No. 11505265 for a Multipurpose Vehicle System with Interchangeable Operational Components and Power Supplies.

Alpha Motor’s vehicle system is structured with a chassis that is dimensionally adjustable and has the capacity to produce different iterations of vehicles. Components within the chassis are interchangeable with new counterparts while used components are recyclable.

Even though the new generation of the Ford Ranger made its global debut at the end of 2021 (July 2022 in Malaysia), development work has not stopped to improve it. While the majority of new features and technologies have been introduced with it at launch, Ford still has a few more in the pipeline, it seems.

One of these is an innovative system which makes taking tight turns in off-road conditions much easier. Known as Trail Turn Assist, it will be available with certain Ranger variants, adding to the pick-up truck’s capabilities.

In future, it will be possible to travel in a car without having to steer or control it. The technology already exists for what are known as autonomous vehicles. At this time, there are just a few production cars from companies like Tesla and Mercedes-Benz which have autonomous capability where the car is fully controlled by computer as it moves along the highway.

But while some countries allow such vehicles to operate – and only in specific public highways – regulations in Malaysia do not permit a vehicle to be driven without driver control. The present laws require the driver to be in control at all times.

So it is obviously a very serious offence when a driver decided to go to sleep and let his car drive on ‘autopilot’ on a Malaysian road This came to the attention of the police after a local DJ, Gatita Yan, uploaded a post on her Instagram page which showed her boyfriend, Tay Wee Shen, seemingly asleep with his hands off the steering wheel. Another picture also showed his feet not on the pedals, suggesting that the car (a BMW) was running with its cruise control in operation.

By 2040, the country is expected to have 1.5 million electric vehicles (EVs), the Dewan Rakyat was told.

The aim, according to Minister of Natural Resources, Environment, and Climate Change Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, follows a global shift to EVs from internal combustion engines (ICEs) that use petrol and diesel.

He said that the new goal is higher than the previous goal of 90,000 EVs by 2040 set by the Planning and Implementation Committee for Electricity Supply and Tariff (JPPPET).

It has been confirmed that Audi’s electric SUV, the Q8 e-tron, will officially enter the Malaysian market.

This jumbo-sized EV went through a hefty update including an increase in its battery capacity. In the front, the e-tron gets a new single-frame grille, different badges and a light bar that stretches between the headlights that seems to be fast becoming a signature of VW group cars.

A think tank has praised the government’s move to implement targeted subsidies for fuel.

Nevertheless, according to Carmelo Ferlito of the Center for Market Education, Putrajaya lacked the expertise necessary to carry out such efforts on a large scale.

He said the purpose of the government implementing targeted subsidies was to “determine whether and how targeted subsidies work.”
