MINI Countryman Powered by X-Raid

As the biggest model in the MINI range, the Countryman has been an ideal support vehicle for the X-raid Team. This is the team that is currently the incumbent overall winner of the Dakar Rally, that gruelling event which takes place annually.

Dakar dominance
For a decade, MINI and the X-raid Team have taken on the Dakar Rally – with much success. From 2012 to 2015, the X-raid Team achieved overall victory for MINI 4 times in a row. An additional overall success followed in 2020, just before the COVID-19 pandemic started to hit. This time, the marathon rally covered thousands of kilometres over the sands of Saudi Arabia.

With its ALL4 all-wheel drive and robust construction, the Countryman has already demonstrated its performance in extreme conditions and over the toughest terrain. Now MINI customers can also benefit from the experience of the successful off-road specialists with the MINI Countryman Powered by X-raid.

Chassis modifications
The MINI Countryman Powered by X-raid is a truly authentic vehicle, epitomising not simply the flair of 5 victories in the Dakar Rally but also the technology that contributed to these triumphs. The chassis modifications of this 5-door model are derived directly from rally sport experience. There’s a significant increase in ground clearance, and particularly resilient wheel rims and tyres with higher flanks as prominent features of the upgrade.

The X-raid Team is familiar both with the features of the Countryman that are specific to the model and with the tough conditions besetting competitors and materials alike in endurance rallies. The know-how is used not only for the development of the winning vehicles but also into continuously optimised preparation of the service vehicles.

One thing that was learnt was that increased ground clearance and measures to avoid flat tyres are vital. This enables the service vehicles of the team to travel along tracks with countless potholes and sharp-edged rocks that are typical of the Andean highlands between Argentina and Chile. The same conditions were also found in the burning deserts of Saudi Arabia.

More off-road capability
Increasing the ride height of the car and the large diameter for the wheel rims and tyres easily raise the ground clearance for the Countryman by up to 40 mm. As a result, the fording depth and the ramp angle are significantly better than the standard cars.

The wheels developed specially for rallying provide effective protection against tyre damage. A robust rim ring ensures that it is not necessary to change the entire wheel if damage is sustained on rocky ground. It also creates a powerful visual impact and masks the high tyre flanks.

Automechanika Kuala Lumpur 2021 to offer a ‘S.E.T.’ of solutions for visitors

2020 has been a bad year for all types of public events as governments all over the world prohibited any activity where many people gathered and could spread the COVID-19 coronavirus. Concerts, sports events, banquets, conferences and exhibitions were all postponed or cancelled. Even the Olympics, to have been held in Japan in July this year, had to be postponed to 2021 and as yet, there is still uncertainty if it can or should be run.

However, as the peak of the pandemic has passed – but there are still new cases and the situation in America is serious – governments in some countries are slowly relaxing the prohibitions on gatherings although most organisers still look towards 2021 to resume events.

Automechanika Kuala Lumpur is one of those that is being planned for 2021. A regular event on the auto industry calendar, the trade fair is scheduled to be held from March 18 to 20 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

Fresh approach
The organisers are taking a fresh approach to the event-oriented exhibition with an all-encompassing array of onsite activities and networking opportunities to help create a dialogue between players in the passenger vehicle, commercial vehicle, logistics and IoT (Internet of Things) sectors.

The digital breakthroughs present a host of new opportunities in the ongoing automation of traditional manufacturing and practices (Industry 4.0) throughout the automotive value chain. The latest National Automotive Policy 2020 has even placed IoT at the forefront of future thinking. Taking these factors into account. Automechanika Kuala Lumpur 2021 will push the boundaries even further to emphasise the potential of the digital transformation in the automotive market.

It will uniquely combine all elements of ‘Sourcing, Entertainment and Training’ to offer a ‘S.E.T.’ of solutions for fairgoers to meet their participating objectives. According to Fiona Chiew, Deputy General Manager of Messe Frankfurt (HK) Ltd, the organisers, the launch of ‘S.E.T.’ is another development in the show’s 22-year history.

“Each element of ‘Sourcing, Entertainment and Training’ will incorporate underlying digital trends that have the power to, ultimately, revolutionise end-user experiences. It equally weights all components, shaping dynamic growth opportunities for automotive players along the supply chain. Therefore, we aim to embody this innovative spirit at the show with one-of-a-kind activities that foster a passionate albeit business-oriented atmosphere,” she explained.

As a dominant aspect of the show, business opportunities are key drivers for participants looking to find new suppliers and meet with existing clients. The 2021 event expects to host exhibitors from 16 countries and regions across all sectors at the fair.

IoT as a standalone sector
The show introduces IoT as a standalone sector to amplify cloud-based, connectivity and telematics trends rising around the regional market. These digital trends will also transcend across Original Equipment (OE) right through to the aftermarket in the passenger, commercial vehicle and logistics sectors.

To illustrate this, product coverage of Diagnostics & Repair/Body & Paint, Accessories & Customising, Parts & Components and more within the core sectors will spotlight digital breakthroughs in safety, environmental protection, infotainment and comfort. For industry players, these are critical factors for today’s changing consumer patterns.

Entertainment in automotive culture
Automechanika Kuala Lumpur will once again be more than just a trading platform. The Auto NITZ Party and EMMA Malaysia Final – Car Audio and Modifications Competition will give way to a new type of auto-cultural festival. The spectacle aims to create a community amongst a mix of automotive players and is set to promote extended networking opportunities by engaging with more exhibitors, visitors and car enthusiasts alike. In the events, visitors from around the world will find an estimated 70 cars, tuned exclusively by local talent, along with guest performances from electronic dance and music groups.

Training from international experts
Information gathering, training and applied teaching remain huge pull factors for the show. Direct fit for Range Rover Sport
The GL-5x is a direct replacement for the Range Rover Sport’s original tail lights. This formula allows the refined internal details, previously concealed by its predecessor, to become a core part of the GL-5x identity while emphasising the Range Rover Sport’s strong stance.

Uniquely tailored aerodynamic fin
The world’s first interchangeable aerodynamic fin is available in two tailored profiles – AF+ and AF-Elite – both designed to channel airflow, reducing drag and increasing stability.

AF+ features exquisite lines for a clean and elegant integration of style while AF-Elite is a highly advanced aerofoil. It further streamlines the taillights wind-cheating functionality with the introduction of sharply styled strakes. Aesthetically, it delivers powerful lines for a bold and sporty appearance, fusing form and function.

Individuality and safety
To allow owners to further individualise the identity of their taillight, both aerodynamic fins are available in exclusive colour variants High-Gloss Black or Platinum Satin, a feature unseen on an automotive taillight.

With the GL-5x, safety remains a top priority, including the introduction of an enhanced dynamic indicator. Utilising 15 eco-low energy LEDs, the turn signal spans a wide 450 mm band and has been fine-tuned to deliver a signal that is 47% brighter. Output is further sharpened by a polycarbonate diffuser, designed to distribute highly homogenous light spanning a 125-degree range, making turn indications safer for all road users.

Circontrol starts tapping into growing PHEV/EV market in Malaysia with aftermarket charging stations

With the introduction of more plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) in Malaysia in coming years, along with a few all-electric models, it’s clear that there will be a market for recharging facilities. For now, such units are being offered by the companies selling the PHEVs or EVs, usually as part of a package with the purchase of the car.

No company will be allowed to have a monopoly of the sale of such recharging facilities otherwise the powerful Competition Commission will take action. This means that there are opportunities for companies specialising in such products to start offering them in Malaysia.

One of them is Circontrol, a 22-year old Spanish company which has a range of chargers for private and commercial application. For homes, Circontrol offers their Wallbox eHome and Wallbox eNext. Protected by an ABS plastic housing that’s UV-resistant for longevity. The unit re also IP54-protected, meaning they are partially protected from dust and sprays or splashes of water.

Some of their charging stations like the eVolve Smart and eNext Elite can be connected via ethernet port or 3G/GPRS to make management much easier. They have 7.4kw power supply and are priced at RM5,300 (including installation with additional charges if the location is outside the Klang Valley).

For those who need quick charging solutions, there are DC Chargers like the Raption 50 which can ‘refill’ battery packs within half an hour, it is claimed.
