Honda Malaysia today announced a proactive product update involving approximately 36,000 units of the Civic, Civic Type R, and CR-V.

This activity is to update the Electric Power Steering (EPS) gearbox. The EPS gearbox worm wheel may swell and reduce grease film thickness, causing abnormal steering noise or sticky steering. The models involved include Civic Year Model 2022-2024, Civic Type R Year Model 2023-2024, and CR-V Year Model 2024.

Honda Malaysia apologises for the inconvenience caused to affected customers and reassures that other current production and selling models are not affected in this product update. The Company believes this proactive product update is necessary as customer safety is Honda Malaysia’s top priority.

Honda has done many things right with its cars, which is why there are thousands of Honda fanboys out there. This writer is one of them. Whether it is a performance-based car or a comfort-based car, Honda excels in both.

The 10th and 11th generation Honda Civic, however, successfully combines both. It is just that the 11th generation does it better.

The Civic dates back to 1972 and came equipped with a 1,169 cc four-cylinder water-cooled engine and featured front disc brakes, reclining vinyl bucket seats, simulated wood trim on the dashboard, as well as optional air conditioning.

At that time, that was impressive. But this writer grew up with the fifth generation onwards and during my school days, we used to take a friend’s Civic EG9 and hit the car meets. On Friday nights, we used to get on the highways to just listen to that engine opening up when the V-TEC kicked in was pretty much what stole the heart of this writer.

It was not that comfortable because the older ones were more performance-oriented builds. Those who had them most definitely did not keep them stock because it was almost impossible to do so.

Along came the eight-generation Civic which introduced performance and a little more comfort. Keep in mind that we are not talking about the Type R’s. We are keeping it to the standard variants here. The eighth gen made quite a name here as enthusiasts who could not afford the Type R variant would buy the standard ones and convert or modify it.

When the ninth generation was introduced, it was a bit of a letdown because it looked like it was marketed more towards working-class people. Although it had the FK2 Type R, the car itself was not that memorable.

Now the 10th-generation Civic also known as the Civic “Ketam” here in Malaysia is still one of the most popular generation Civics here. Every corner of the world you go to, you are sure to bump into a Civic. It is at every car show, car meet and race. This generation introduced the iconic FK8 Type R which made those who had the standard variant pump out money for the conversion. This was slightly more spacious and comfortable, yet it was still a beast on the road.

On to the latest generation, Honda’s new interior design language which looks great for these set of eyes, also adds a little touch of sophistication. This translates into a more grown-up and matured look. The 2024 Honda CR-V features this same look with the honeycomb-designed vents which again looks pleasing to the eye. To those of you who use the traditional vents to attach your phone holders, sorry but you will not be able to do so with this design.

This writer is one of those who use those phone holders and at first, I was annoyed that I could not do so but then I remembered that I use that for the sole purpose of navigation and the Civic has wireless Apple CarPlay, so there, problem solved. For the android users, it also features Android Auto Connectivity.

This is accessible through the nine-inch advanced display infotainment screen which is easy to understand as to how straightforward it is. No complications when it comes to navigating through the contents of the infotainment screen which will save you some time in case you are in a hurry and need to get the GPS going. What we like is that the screen serves its purpose of doing the necessities. What do we mean by that? Well, modern cars these days are implementing simple control functions such as air-conditioning settings and drive modes into the infotainment screen. This means extra steps are needed for you to access those functions and while you are driving, it can be distracting.

Honda keeps it simple with physical buttons and controls that are also found on the steering wheel which allows you to make quick changes without taking your eyes off the road. Things such as skipping to the next track from your Spotify playlist can be done even without looking at the steering wheel because you will get used to the feel and touch of where the buttons are located. Speaking of Spotify, the music is channelled back to the cabin through eight speakers which sound decent.

Ever since the discontinuation of the Accord here in Malaysia, the Civic has had some pretty big shoes to fill in terms of comfort and spaciousness. Just for the record, this writer has a big build and comfort is one of the utter most important elements I look for in a car, besides the performance. The Civic did not let me down.

The seats were remarkably comfortable, and the leg space was decent enough for me to not have cramps on long journeys. My passengers had nothing to complain about in terms of spaciousness and comfort and they were amazed by the standards Honda has set for the Civic.

However, as a driver, there was one minor thing that was bugging me. The field of view from the rearview mirror was not as wide or high as I would have liked it to be. If there are tall rear seat passengers, that would have hindred rearward visibility. It was a minor inconvenience but then again, I remembered a quote that says “The windshield is bigger than the rearview mirror, because where we are going is more important than where we have been.”

Another minor issue is that the car is quite low. This means senior citizens may struggle to get out of the car.

Now that we have got that out of the way, onto the fun part, the performance. This turbocharged 1.5L four-cylinder surprised me in a good way. It allows you to easily touch 200km/h without you even noticing and that is scary. The engine puts out 184PS which may not sound like a lot but it is more than enough. It gives you 240Nm of torque, allowing brisk overtaking and making highway driving more fun.

This may not be an EG9, but it is equally as fun and driving it brought back good memories. There is a very slight delay before the power actually kicks in when you put your foot down so the 0-100km/h will take you 8.5 seconds, slightly slower compared to the e:HEV variant that does it in 7.9 seconds. However, the e:HEV variant has a top speed of 180km/h while the petrol variant can reach 200km/h.

But of course, speeding is never safe and we don’t advocate it, so we tested out the real-world driving scenarios. This means monitoring the fuel consumption.

According to Honda, this variant has a 6.3L/km fuel consumption. When we got the car at full tank, we had about 450km of range and we did the real-world driving test for about three days. We got an average of 8.0L/km which is not bad, and when we passed the car back to Honda, it still had about 190km of range left, which again, is still not bad considering the amount of testing that was carried out.

So, is the Honda Civic 1.5L Turbo still worth the buy? Well, when I handed the keys back to Honda Malaysia, my heart sank a little knowing that it may be some time till I get to drive it again. The pricing of the Civic starts from RM132,000 and goes all the way up to RM168,000. This variant that we tested, the 1.5L Turbo RS is priced at RM152,000, which we think is a good amount considering the quality, performance and comfort that the car is offering.

In 2023, Honda celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Honda Civic, a significant milestone for the brand. Additionally, it marked 25 years since the introduction of Honda’s iconic high-performance Type R model, which had made a lasting impact on enthusiasts and the automotive market.

To commemorate this special year, Honda introduced the new Civic Type R in September 2022. This latest iteration was unveiled as the most powerful Type R model ever produced, showcasing Honda’s dedication to performance and innovation.

Honda Malaysia has finally introduced the new Type R into the Malaysian market. Building on the foundation of the 11th generation Civic hatchback, the new Civic Type R represented a significant leap forward. It incorporated advanced technologies inspired by motorsport, enabling it to surpass the performance capabilities of even the stripped-down, lightweight versions of the previous model.

The exterior design of the new FL5 Civic Type R emphasizes unity and simplicity, showcasing uncluttered details on the front and rear bumpers. Integrated design features, like the rear doors and arches, have been specifically developed for the Type R, not only enhancing the aesthetics but also providing improved aerodynamic benefits.

The Type R’s design is optimised for aerodynamics, enhancing performance. The large lower grille, with a larger fan behind it, effectively channels airflow to the engine. This design is complemented by a subtle bonnet featuring a vent to further enhance airflow around the front end.

In addition, strategic design elements contribute to superior aerodynamics. Large aperture vents positioned behind the front wheels and a larger rear diffuser, seamlessly integrated into the under-floor and coordinated with the bodywork above, all play a role in maximising the aerodynamic efficiency of the car.

The Pilot Sport 4S tyres for the Type R were created by Honda and Michelin in partnership and have a 265/30 profile, making them 20 mm wider than earlier models. The “reverse rim” design of the 19-inch wheels these tyres are attached to efficiently reduce deformation on the inside of the wheel and improve the stability of the tyre contact patch, especially while under load.

This set of wheels and tyres results in a 12.7mm larger rear track and a front track that is 25mm wider. The new model’s body is 20mm longer and 15mm wider when the FL hatchback base and Type R-specific external design components are combined.

The Civic Type R flaunts a bold rear spoiler design, not only enhancing downforce but also minimizing air resistance due to its rearward angulation. The spoiler is mounted lower and wider compared to the previous model, providing a sleeker roofline and a broader stance. Reinforced by new aluminium die-cast mounts, this rear wing is a notable aerodynamic feature.

Beneath the vented aluminium bonnet lies a potent version of Honda’s K20C1 engine. Key performance metrics like horsepower, torque, and responsiveness have been elevated through a redesigned turbocharger, heightened air intake flow rate, and an upgraded exhaust system boasting a straight-through design and an active exhaust valve. Optimisations in the turbocharger’s turbine wheel blades, size, shape, and intake charge flow path enable efficient pressure generation in a broader range. These enhancements collectively contribute to an impressive powertrain.

A considerable update has been made to the turbocharged 2-litre 4-cylinder DOHC VTEC engine, which now produces an astounding 319PS at 6,500 rpm and a hefty 420Nm between 2,600 and 4,000 rpm. The Type R is now firmly established as one of the most powerful cars in its class thanks to this improvement.

A crisp and exciting 6-speed manual gearbox is included with the Type R. It should be noted that this gearbox has been improved, with a lighter flywheel and a new rev-match mechanism. The rev-matching technology, which is beautifully timed with downshifts, aids in corner entrance stability.

Hyper-precise gear changes are made possible by the gearbox’s fortification with high-strength parts, such as a high-rigidity lever and an improved shift gate layout. A typical helical-type limited-slip differential also effectively transmits the engine’s power to the road, improving overall performance.

The Type R provides a dynamic driving experience through selectable performance modes that allow the driver to tailor the car’s behaviour according to their preferences. These modes encompass engine, steering, suspension, and engine sound settings. The available pre-set modes include Comfort, Sport, and +R. In addition to these, a new ‘Individual Mode’ has been introduced, granting the driver the ability to customise various driving parameters to achieve a personalised and optimal driving experience.

The cabin is aesthetically pleasing and has been built with performance in mind. Along with the recognisable red seats, carpet, and trim, it also has a newly designed aluminium shift knob and a serialised Type R plate on the dashboard as distinguishing elements.

The cockpit was designed with performance driving in mind, and it has a new digital instrument cluster with crisp, easy-to-read visuals and a variety of display settings. It is notable for having a large tachometer, a display for the gear position, and a multi-information display.

The engine rpm and gear position are put at the top of a second new metre that is only available in Type R’s +R mode, giving the driver immediate access to the information they need. During performance driving, an illuminated rev indicator with a racing theme is situated above the gauge cluster to offer the driver a rapid indication of engine rpm.

A new 9-inch Colour Touchscreen, the biggest touchscreen ever in a Type R, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, is just one example of how technology has been thoughtfully incorporated into the redesigned cabin with an emphasis on the driver.

Additionally standard are a Bose Centrepoint premium sound system that was specifically designed for the Civic’s interior and wireless charging that is Qi compliant.

A newly improved Honda LogR Performance Datalogger that is exclusive to the Type R combines the onboard computer and sensors of the car with a new built-in vehicle app, eliminating the need for a smartphone. When driving on a track or other closed courses, this aids drivers in monitoring and recording a number of performance metrics in real-time.

Because to the narrower pillars, repositioned side mirrors, and lower bonnet, the driver is seated more comfortably and with better visibility than before in a new, lighter, body-stabilizing performance seat. On the track and during extended journeys, the front sports seats’ lightweight, firmly bolstered design and suede-effect material provide great support and comfort.

The most powerful car sold by Honda Malaysia is priced at RM399,900 and for 2023, there will only be 19 units available for booking. The Type R will only come in Championship White and the lucky 19 Type R owners for 2023 will be announced by Honda Malaysia.

When Chin Kok Fung placed his order for a new Honda Civic e:HEV RS with authorized Honda dealer MH Prestige Auto Sdn. Bhd. In Bandar Sri Damansara, Kuala Lumpur, he probably did not think he would have the honour of a very special hand-over. However, being the first person in Malaysia to receive the new model, Mr. Chin was given a token of appreciation from Honda Malaysia when he collected his car.

He received received Honda Accessories and Official Honda Merchandise worth RM4,000 from Honda Malaysia’s Managing Director and CEO, Hironobu Yoshimura, at a simple ceremony held at the dealership’s premises.

Based on a reliability survey that was conducted in What Car? magazine, a UK based automotive publication, the Honda Jazz is the most reliable car in the UK. The survey asked its readers whether their cars had suffered any faults within the last 12 months.

According to the 14,208 readers who responded, not a single Honda Jazz owner who completed the survey, reported any faults with his or her car. The different types of faults of the car were classified into 14 categories.

Readers were allowed to select parts of the car based on the following categories : battery, bodywork, brakes, engine electrics, exhaust, exterior lights, fuel system, gearbox/clutch, interior trim, non-engine electrics, steering, suspension and other.

Despite this, not a single person reported anything wrong in any of the 14 categories, which is a testament to Honda’s reputation for building reliable and robust vehicles. The Jazz’s bigger brother, the Civic, did well too, scoring a 94.5% reliability rating.

“This is a fantastic result for the Jazz and only goes to further demonstrate the build quality that Honda is famed for,” said Phil Webb, head of cars at Honda UK. “To then also further score highly with the Civic hatchback and Tourer simply reaffirms Honda as one of the most trusted and reliable brands.”

Though it seem like this bit of news irrelevant to Malaysian car owners, the contrary is true. This data offer an insight into the robustness of the mechanicals that power the current Jazz.

And since cars made in different parts of the world utilize similar drivetrains and trim fixtures, it’s safe to say that Honda Jazz owners here in Malaysia should be able to enjoy the same reliability as those in the UK.

Honda will be using the upcoming 2017 Frankfurt Motorshow as a platform to showcase its electrification plans for its European car range. Part of that plan is the introduction of the Urban EV Concept, which will provide the general public with a glimpse into the direction Honda will take for future EVs.

Unlike Nissan, Honda and Toyota don’t have their own versions of EV contenders, choosing instead to rely solely on hybrid propulsion system for its electrification product portfolio. This is why its Frankfurt announcement will play a major role in gauging the automaker’s seriousness to take on EV competitors like Tesla and more recently, Volvo and VW.

Apart from the new vehicle, Honda will also be unveiling a hybrid version of the CR-V in prototype form. The move is meant as a precursor to the launch of the all-new CR-V SUV which should take place soon. The public will get to witness first hand, the best that Honda has to offer.

Flanking this new vehicle are the facelifted Jazz supermini as well as the new diesel-powered variant of the current (10th) generation Civic hatchback. Honda Motor CEO, Takahiro Hachigo will unveil the Honda Urban EV Concept at the Honda Press Conference on Tuesday 12 September.

The diesel powered vehicle will probably utilizes the new and improved engine from the previous generation car. A detailed article regarding that particular powerplant has been covered in a previous article, click here to read it.

This is great news for Honda fans, because like a number of other mainstream automakers, it too will be going ‘all in’ on the EV revolution.

Honda Malaysia has announced that sales figures from January to April of this year have been good and has put the automaker on track to achieve its sales target of 100,000 vehicles. This will it to keep the top spot among non-nationl manufacturers based on total industry volume (TIV) this year.

As of now, Honda has achieved 35% of its sales target with 34,500 vehicles sold at the end of April. Compared to last year, sales has risen by 40% or 9,800 more vehicles were sold. Attributing to that number is the new BR-V that racked up 7,800 orders and the new City which has received 7,200 bookings since its launch in March.

Demand for the Civic has risen too with 840 vehicles sold per month. Prior to the introduction of the 10th gen car, the Civic nameplate was only receiving 50 to 200 orders, which says a lot of the new car’s appeal.

And to ensure that the Japanese automaker keeps up with demand especially with the upcoming festive season, Honda’s two production lines will be adjusted so that waiting periods do not exceed 2 months and that with the increased production, quality control isn’t effected either.

Besides these sales figures, Honda Malaysia also announced new prices for the HR-V and CR-V 2.0 2WD due to re-classification under the new customs tariff code. Pricing for the HR-V 1.8L S is now RM101,100, E is RM110,700 and the V variant is RM121,000. The price of the two-wheel-drive CR-V has been adjusted to RM141,500.

As a means to allure more potential buyers to the brand, Honda will be organizing two campaigns this month. The ‘Nikmati Musim Bonus’ will take place from 1st May 2017 to 31st May 2017. During this period, Honda is offering customers 2 years of free vehicle servicing (parts & labour) or cash options. The second campaign, is a nationwide showroom event which will be conducted in conjunction with Mother’s Day on 13th May 2017.

The event will take place from 10am to 4pm and will feature a whole host of activities for the appreciation of mothers, which include roses and Mother’s Day cards made by their own children in the Honda showroom. Other activities include test drive gifts and lucky draws, which should prove to be fun and enjoyable for the whole family.
