Mercedes-Benz

Mercedes-Benz has had an extraordinay start to the year by posting record sales figures for the first quarter of 2017. March was the strongest month for the automaker in terms of sales figures, as it posted a growth of 14.8% with 228,296 vehicles being delivered globally.

Overall, Mercedes-Benz sales increased to 16% in total for this quarter by selling 560,625 vehicles so far. So strong was the demand for its vehicles that the company has even gone so far as to say that during the same period, the company was considered the premium-segment market leader in a number of countries including Germany, UK, France, Italy, Switzerland, Japan, South Korea, Australia, Canada and Mexico.

“The E-Class Saloon and Estate continued along their successful path in March with growth of around 65 percent. The bestselling model series of Mercedes-Benz has now been completed with the new E-Class Cabriolet, which we presented to the public at the Geneva Motor Show, right on time for the start of spring,” stated Britta Seeger, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG responsible for Mercedes-Benz Cars Marketing & Sales.

In Europe, the Stuttgart based automaker posted a 10.8% growth for the quarter with 233,329 vehicles sold. For the Asia-Pacific region, a sales growth of 27.4% was seen with 219,418 vehicles sold. In China alone, Mercedes-Benz managed to shift 49,871 vehicles in March which is about a 30% increase in sales. Though it didn’t disclose any specific figures, the company also said that it posed best ever sales figures for the month of March in a number of other countries such as South Korea, Australia and Malaysia.

In North America, things were just as rosy for the automaker with sales reaching 94,142 vehicles amounting to a 7.1% increase. In fact, Mercedes-Benz even achieved record sales in the three countries which make up the region (USA, Canada and Mexico).

It looks like 2017 has been very good to Mercedes-Benz with its E-Class and GLS being among the most popular models. This news should come as no surprise to most people because over the past few years, the German auto giant has been churning out some of the best looking and best performing premium vehicles in the market. But we shall have to wait and see if the interest in the brand manages to gather more momentum for the remaining quarters of it’s fiscal year.

Collectible classic cars are always in demand especially those that have been persevered for decades but look as though they had just rolled off the showroom floor. One such car is a 1989 R107 Mercedes-Benz 500 SL with only 1538km on the odometer. Considering that this particular Merc is close to 30 years old, the mileage says a lot about how often it was actually taken out on the road.

This right-hand drive example of the R107 is said to be one of the last ones ever built and was replaced by the R129 series the very same year. Launched in 1971, the R107 was based on the E-Class W114 sedan but utilized larger and more powerful engines from the S-Class. It is the second longest running model in the company’s history and was a favorite among those who wanted a refined luxury vehicle but with the brute power of a sports car. This particular car has a 5.0-litre V8 that produces 242bhp.

Built at a time when Mercedes-Benz engineers were obsessed with perfection, this over-engineered vehicle features “Tempomat” cruise control, air-conditioning, green-tinted sun-deflecting glass, heated seats and a separate hardtop . Amazingly, it still has its original tool kit, book pack and two hardtop release handles.

The car is currently being put up for sale by London classic car retailer Hexagon and is touted as the best example of the R107 Merc in the world right now. The car is being offered with a price tag of £94,995 (RM521,969) at Hexagon Classics’ showroom in London. The lucky buyer will definitely be getting his money’s worth with this R107.

It’s an A-Class that looks and feels a little more special than its siblings

Not content with the diversity of the current A-Class line up, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia has has introduced a variant that is aimed at those wanting an A-200 with added visual to complement their urban lifestyle.

Limited to just 30 units, the A-Class Urban Hunting Activity Edition is equipped with a number of extras which includes 18-inch 10-spoke lightweight alloy rims which are black in colour. Matt black decals adorn the vehicles sides and to ensure that you don’t mistake the car for its siblings, a wing badge with the words Activity Edition slapped on and another such badge on the centre console.

The Night Package offers a few more special bits such as selected black accents to the wheels, exterior mirrors and the belt line trim strip. On the inside, the dasboard, door centre panels and sports seats are covered with Artico man-made leather which add to the premium look and feel that’s synonymous with the brand.

Other features like the contrasting top stitching and chrome accents are a little more subtle than the others. The instrument cluster with its tubed-shaped round dials feature a checkered flag look contrasting with the red needles.

Available in five different colours which are Cirrus White, Jupiter Red, Polar Silver, Elbaite Green and Cavansite Blue, the A-200 Urban Hunting Activity Edition is priced at RM205,888 on the road without insurance.

Those who find the pricing a bit steep, can rest a little easy because Merc’s Financing plans help reduce the montly payments. Opting fot the 3-year Agility Financing agreement, buyers should only expect to pay RM3,441 per month. Not only that, with this agreement, owners have the option of either returing the car, paying off the residual value amount or refinacing the residual value amount.
