The population of Mitsubishi vehicles in Malaysia has been growing, especially with the popularity of the Triton and undoubtedly with the coming Xpander model. As the number of vehicles increases, so too will the demand for replacement parts.

In a proactive move, Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia recently migrated to a new parts warehouse in Shah Alam, Selangor as part of an expansion plan to meet with increasing aftersales demands.

Faster delivery of parts
The new facility has a storage capacity of up to 40,000 square feet, enabling the consolidation of all holdings under one roof to improve warehouse operations. This move will also speed up delivery of parts required by all authorized service centres nationwide.

Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia

“The relocation of our warehouse is in line with the continuous growth of Mitsubishi Motors business in Malaysia. The new parts warehouse is located at a strategic location with less road congestion and easy access to Federal and KESAS highway. With this accessibility, we will be able to accelerate our parts delivery to MMM’s business partners as we constantly seek to improve customer’s aftersales experience by reducing cost and increasing our work efficiency,” said Tomoyuki Shinnishi, CEO of Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia.

In Malaysia, there are 52 authorised Mitsubishi Motors service outlets and 52 showrooms (out of which 46 are 3S Centres).

The rumours are true: Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia will be launching the Mitsubishi XPANDER crossover this year. The 7-seater crossover originated in the Indonesian market where the production hub is located, and has been progressively introduced in various ASEAN countries.

The new XPANDER blends functionality with SUV-inspired styling. While Its rugged image appeals broadly, it also has the roominess, convenience, style and functionality which consumers of today want. These qualities are expanded to make it highly suitable  for Malaysian lifestyles.

2020 Mitsubishi XPANDER

The XPANDER’s styling adopts the ‘Dynamic Shield’ front design concept which has been incorporated in every Mitsubishi model launched in recent years. The ‘Dynamic Shield’ not only gives a bold appearance but also expresses high performance and a sense of protection for the driver and passengers.

Its successful design concept has been validated by the various awards it has won. Some of the prominent awards are ‘2018 Car of the Year’ in Indonesia; ‘Philippines 2019 Automobile of the Year (Standard Category)’; and ‘Thailand Car of the Year 2019 and 2020’ as well as ‘The Best MPV under 1600 cc’ (also in Thailand).

2020 Mitsubishi XPANDER

“The XPANDER is not just an important model for Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia, but across the ASEAN region as well. As of June 2020, the model has reached cumulative sales of around 256,000 units. The success of the XPANDER in our neighbouring countries such as Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam reflects how well-suited this car will be to meet the needs of Malaysian customers. MMM is very excited for a thrilling year ahead with the introduction of this impressive 7-seater crossover in Malaysia later this year,” said Tomoyuki Shinnishi, CEO of Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia.

The question now is whether it will be assembled locally, as the Outlander and ASX models are, or will it be imported as a CBU model from Indonesia? Although the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) agreement allows for duty-free importation, having a model assembled locally would enable the pricing to be more competitive.

Like other carmakers, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) aims to provide mobility with zero traffic accidents. In pursuit of this goal, it is fully committed to developing and implementing active and passive safety technologies and protection, even with its small kei-class cars.

Demonstrating its efforts in this aspect are the scores achieved by the eK X and eK Wagon in the latest assessments by the Japan New Car Assessment Program (JNCAP). Both models have been awarded the highest rating with the highest ‘ASV+++’ rating. ‘ASV’ refers to ‘Advanced Safety Vehicle’, as defined by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. The top rating was in preventive safety performance and the maximum 5-star rating in collision safety performance.

Driver assistance tech
The eK X and eK Wagon come equipped with driver assistance technology which encompasses preventive safety measures to support the drivers in avoiding collisions, or mitigate the collision damage.

These include Lane Departure Warning (LDW) which alerts the driver with a warning buzzer and information screen display when the vehicle is about to stray from its lane, while Lane Departure Prevention (LDP) assists the driver in moving the vehicle back to its lane.

Mitsubishi eK

The Emergency Assist for Pedal Misapplication installed in both kei cars prevents sudden acceleration by unintentional operation of shift lever or pedal. A Multi Around Monitor gives the driver a good view of the surroundings when parking so that hazards or small children can be spotted.

In addition, the built-in Forward Collision Mitigation (FCM) autonomous emergency braking system which detects pedestrians and vehicles ahead, and Automatic High Beam (AHB) which switches between high beam and low beam automatically contribute to safer motoring.

RISE bodywork
The eK X and eK Wagon, which are structurally similar, have high levels of collision safety performance built in, thanks to the company’s RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution) bodywork. It combines collision energy absorbing front body design with a deformation-resistant passenger compartment, as well as 6 SRS airbags for frontal and side protection.

Mitsubishi eK

The kei  cars are designed to further improve the pedestrian safety with an energy-absorbing in the bonnet to protect the head area of pedestrians. A structure inside the bumper is specially designed to reduce injuries to the legs of pedestrians in the event of a collision.

It may seem like the safety systems are nothing new but the important point is that they are now being offered in kei-class cars, which are the smallest and cheapest in the market. Historically, such cars were equipped in a basic manner but with consumers expecting better protection, manufacturers have to make them safer as well.

Mitsubishi eK

Car of the Year winners
Launched into the Japanese market in March last year, the eK X and eK Wagon were winners in the  Car of the Year Japan 2019-2020 in Small Mobility category. Additionally, the models were also selected as the RJC Car of the Year 2020.

Although it is only from the 1950s that Japan’s auto industry grew rapidly, the industry has a history which goes back 100 years. As far back as November 1918, a prototype of the Mitsubishi Model A was completed with 22 cars built. It was the first series-production passenger car built in Japan and sold with a view to mass production.

Replica of Mitsubishi Model A

Of course, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) did not exist then and it was one of its parent companies – the Kobe Shipyard of Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Company (Mitsubishi Heavy Industries today) that designed and produced the Model A. MMC was established only in 1970 as a separate unit in the group.

Although there were few specialized automotive tools or machinery in those days, the first Model A was built by hand using hammers and chisels. The wooden body was lacquered, and the interior used luxury British woollen cloth. With no design drawings to work to, and with little knowledge of petrol engines, car bodies or interiors, or any experience in production processes, the engineers overcame many difficulties and demonstrated that the domestic mass production of automobiles was possible.

Replica of Mitsubishi Model A

The Model A is  acknowledged to be a car of significance in the Japanese automotive industry history. As such, it has been selected by the Japan Automotive Hall of Fame (JAHFA), a non-profit organization, as a Historic Car.

JAHAF’s mission is also to recognise the achievements of people who contributed to building and development of today’s Japanese automotive industry as well as those who promoted the industry’s science and culture. The organisation inducts such people to its Hall of Fame to hand their achievements on to future generations.

Re: Model A
In November 2018, to celebrate its 100 years of car-making, Mitsubishi Motors commissioned West Coast Customs (a customisation company in California) to recreate its idea the Model A. The end result – called the Re-Model A – was this and underneath was a plug-in hybrid powertrain from the Outlander.

The Mitsubishi Mirage and its sedan variant, the Attrage, have been around for quite some time, having been launched as the carmaker’s global compact models in 2012/2013. Although no longer offered in Malaysia as Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia has chosen to focus on pick-ups and SUVs which sell in bigger numbers, we thought you’d like to know how the model’s facelift will be like when it is launched on November 18 in Thailand.

2019 Mitsubishi Mirage and Attrage
Both models will get the Dynamic Shield front end which has been used for new models starting with the 2016 Outlander. The introduction of the Dynamic Shield has given a consistent look across the Mitsubishi line-up which highlights the automaker’s off-road roots.

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) has a long history of developing SUVs. In fact, together with Isuzu, it could be said that the company was the pioneer in the modern SUV which in the early 1980s was referred to as a ‘dual-purpose vehicle’. The vehicle was the Pajero and along with the Isuzu Trooper which appeared almost at the same time, consumer perception of such vehicles changed from being mere workhorses to alternatives to passenger cars.

With almost 4 decades of experience in producing SUVs, it would only be expected that MMC is now developing such vehicles which will run with electric motors, in line with industry trends for the coming decade. At the Tokyo Motor Show this year, it displayed the MI-TECH concept to give an idea of what a small-sized electrified SUV could be like.

2019 Mitsubishi MI-TECH concept

Compact buggy-type vehicle
The design is that of a dynamic buggy-type vehicle with the familiar signature Dynamic Shield that is used for the front of the latest Triton. The new front design concept (which may be how the ‘face’ evolves) uses a satin-plated colour in the centre of the grille, with copper as a secondary colour to accentuate its expressiveness as an electrified vehicle.

T-shaped headlights are embedded in the front end to emphasize a distinguishing outward appearance. On the lower bumper, an aluminium skidplate is placed on both sides to protect the body while the centre section has an air intake.

On the sides, the highly raised over-fenders and large diameter tyres project a high level of mobility, SUV power, as well as the stability to thoroughly grip the terrain. The body radiates grandeur and sharpness with a design reminiscent of a machined metal ingot, while the use of side-steps on the carved sides balances utility with design.

The rear end design is dominated by a large and bold hexagon shape, again exuding the impression of being machined from solid metal ingot to emphasize robustness and strength. The T-shaped tail lamp shared the same design pattern used on the front end, as do the rear bumpers.

Functional cockpit with infographics
Inside, a horizontal instrument panel and clean, functional design make operating the MI-TECH easier. Keyboard-shaped switches are positioned on a centre console, and the front handgrip also functions as a hand pad to make the switches easy to operate. Functions are presented in a straightforward manner, easy to understand just by seeing them and with a reassuring feel when pressed.

The horizontal theme is further accentuated by copper lines added on the instrument panel and steering wheel. For extra peace of mind, the front windscreen presents all the relevant information in graphics such as vehicle behaviour, terrain recognition and optimal route guidance.

2019 Mitsubishi MI-TECH concept

PHEV powertrain of the future
The power generator in the new PHEV drivetrain is a lightweight, compact gas turbine engine-generator in place of the traditional petrol engine. The gas turbine engine-generator has a powerful output for its size and weight with the added benefit of flexibility to run on a variety of fuels such as diesel, kerosene and alcohol which can be selected depending on the regions.

Building on its PHEV powertrain experience, MMC has evolved its Super All Wheel Control (S-AWC) integrated vehicle dynamics control system to operate with a Quad Motor 4WD System with front and rear Dual-Motor Active Yaw Control (AYC) units. Making the brake calipers electric has also allows for high response, high accuracy control of drive and braking force of the 4 wheels while delivering a drastic improvement in turning and traction performance.

2019 Mitsubishi MI-TECH concept

When driving off-road and 2 of the wheels lose traction, the ability to transmit the optimal driving force to all 4 wheels makes it possible to transmit force to the 2 wheels still on the ground and keep driving. It is possible to execute 180-degree spins by counter-rotating the left and right wheels.

The MI-TECH also comes equipped with a Human Machine Interface (HMI) which displays varying information detected through sensing technology including advanced optical sensors on an augmented reality (AR) windscreen. With vehicle, road, and surrounding traffic conditions shown on the AR glass, the driver can make accurate decisions even in poor visibility without taking his eyes away from the view ahead.

Visitors to the Mitsubishi Motors (MMC) booth at the coming Tokyo Motorshow later this month will be shown two new concept cars that preview the carmaker’s future technologies: the MI-TECH Concept and the Super Height K-Wagon Concept.

MI-TECH Concept
The MI-TECH Concept is said to embody the values of MMC’s ‘Drive your Ambition’ brand message under the concept of “An electric SUV that delivers unparalleled driving pleasure and confidence over all terrain in light and wind”.

Mitsubishi MI-TECH Concept

The concept car features a new, downsized and lighter plug-in hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) drivetrain, a 4-motor electric 4WD system and advanced driver assistance with active safety systems. The MI-TECH name is derived using the ‘M’ from Mitsubishi and the ‘I’ from ‘Intelligent, Ingenious and Inspired’, while the TECH is an abbreviation of Technology.

The MI-TECH’s advanced PHEV system is optimised with a light and compact unit for this small size SUV, using a gas turbine engine generator instead of a petrol engine generator. This allows the driver to use pure-electric driving mode and series hybrid modes, delivering the smooth and powerful performance characteristics inherent to electrified vehicles.

Its 4-motor 4WD system called Quad Motor with Dual Motor Active Yaw Control (AYC) has two motors for both the front and rear axles. This allows optimum torque to be delivered to all the wheels, bringing confidence to the driver with precise handling for the daily use and also enhanced performance for adventuring off-road.

Inside, a human-machine interface (HMI) projects a variety of information, detected by using advanced optical sensing technology, onto the windscreen of the vehicle. While the MI-PILOT driver assistance system not only alerts the driver in potential collision situations, it also supports the operation of the steering wheel and brakes.

In addition, active safety systems support the driver in avoiding collisions and mitigating any collision damage. All these systems work together to deliver a reassuring, safe and enjoyable driving experience.

BHPetrol

Super Height K-Wagon Concept
The new-generation Super Height K-Wagon Concept answers the wishes of those drivers looking to expand their list of destinations and going further towards to the horizon. This concept features the roomy interior space as is standard of the genre while delivering the performance and functionality expected in this category, with a SUV touch.

Super Height K-Wagon Concept

Few details are available but MMC says it delivers nimble handling and brisk performance while maximizing interior space. It also offers reassurance and safety to all occupants with MI-PILOT driver assistance technology, Forward Collision Mitigation, mis-acceleration mitigation and other advanced active safety systems which earn it SAPO CAR (Safety Support Car) S Wide classification from the Japanese government.

Engelberg Tourer
The Engelberg Tourer concept SUV, unveiled earlier, will also be on display.
