When the government announced PENJANA (Pelan Jana Semula Ekonomi Negara), the RM35 billion short-term economic recovery plan, exemption of sales tax for new motor vehicles was among the incentives. However, to the disappointment of those who thought of buying a pick-up truck, the exemption did not cover such vehicles as they are classified as commercial vehicles. Perhaps because the government is giving other incentives to the commercial sector, they are making the exclusion.

Therefore, while passenger vehicles now have reduced prices with sales tax exempted (partial for imported CBU models) and the exemption will be maintained till the end of the year, pick-up truck prices have not changed.

However, if you buy a Ford Ranger, you can still save money at this time because Sime Darby Auto ConneXion (SDAC) is offering rebates for popular pick-up truck. The offer is for three variants of the WildTrak, with rebates of up to RM7,188.

Those who choose the WildTrak and Ranger XL will receive cash rebates of up to RM7,000, while those who pick the Ranger XLT Plus can enjoy savings of RM7,188 (while stocks last).

“The Ford Ranger line-up continues to appeal to a wide range of customers with its reputation as a capable and versatile pickup that is suited for any purpose, be it work, play or both. By offering these savings, we hope to lighten the financial load for customers who wish to be a proud owner of a tough and versatile Ford Ranger,” said Syed Ahmad Muzri Syed Faiz, MD of Sime Darby Auto ConneXion.

Ford Ranger Wildtrak variants

Three choices
The Ranger WildTrak is equipped with the proven 2.0-litre Bi-Turbo diesel engine mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. This powertrain delivers 213 ps/500 Nm, enabling the Ranger to overcome challenging conditions while also being able to cruise effortlessly at high speeds.

With an extensive suite of smart technologies, many of which are first and only in-class, the WildTrak is safe and capable with a level of refinement that is above average for the typical pick-up truck.

The Ranger XLT Plus is powered by a 2-litre Single-Turbo diesel engine that produces 180 ps/420 Nm, plenty for hauling heavy cargo. It comes with convenience features such as keyless entry with pushstart ignition and the innovative Easy Lift Tailgate which takes away the heaviness of the tailgate.

Those who are looking for a reliable and tough workhorse will find the Ranger XL well suited to many tasks. It can haul up to 1,000 kgs and tow a load of up to 3,500 kgs. The Ranger XL is ‘Built Ford Tough’, which also applies to every Ranger model.

Ever since Malaysia had a Movement Control Order (MCO) which was necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic, life has changed. With Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to be followed so as to prevent spread of the coronavirus, companies have had to quickly formulate new procedures for customer interaction.

At service centres, for example, appointments have to be made in advance to ensure that the number of vehicles and customers is not excessive and affect social distancing. Customers are also required to undergo temperature checks and provide contact details when they visit the facilities, as well as use contactless payments if possible.

Besides adhering to all the SOPs, Sime Darby Auto ConneXion (SDAC) has also been looking at ways to make things more convenient for its Ford customers. In another step towards delivering a seamless customer service experience, has digitised its vehicle service appointments by expanding its online booking tool to be capable of managing and confirming service appointments in real-time

Real-time e-Service appointment booking, via the SDAC-Ford website, is currently available at 7 authorised Ford Service Centres – Ford Ara Damansara, Ford Petaling Jaya 2, Ford Juru, Ford Butterworth, Ford Kuching, Ford Kota Kinabalu and Ford Tawau.

Ford Book a Service

“The expansion of the implementation for the real-time e-Service appointment booking will enable customers to immediately know the available vehicle service time slots at their chosen dealership. Delivering this added convenience is yet another demonstration of our commitment to providing a more seamless and digitised experience for our customers,” said Syed Ahmad Muzri Syed Faiz, MD of Sime Darby Auto ConneXion.

“In the months to come, we will be looking at fully establishing this real-time e-Service appointment booking for our network of over 40 dealerships nationwide,” added Tuan Syed Muzri.

Booking a service appointment online is simple. Customers just need to visit www.sdacford.com.my  and click the ‘Book a Service’ tab. They then select their vehicle model, choose the state in which they are located in, and select their preferred service centre from a drop-down list.

The available date and time slots will then be shown, and customers can schedule a service appointment up to 1 month in advance. Once completed, a confirmation email of the appointment will be sent.

In addition to booking a service appointment online, customers can also schedule their service appointments by calling an authorised Ford Service Centre directly. Booking an appointment is good for both the vehicle owner, who can choose a suitable time and day, as well as SDAC which can manage its operations more efficiently.

Incidentally, if you service your vehicle this month at an authorised Ford service centre, you can save up to 20% on parts and service, plus get a free 27-point vehicle inspection.  It’s one way SDAC is helping Ford owners in this difficult times.

For a long time now, it’s been a ‘buyers’ market’ rather than a ‘sellers’ market’ and car companies have been trying different ways to draw customers to their brand and products. Sales and aftersales services and facilities have been raised in quality and customers who visit showrooms may be pampered with food and drink, besides a very comfortable environment.

However, in this time of reduced showroom traffic, the car companies are going further in reaching out to customers. For example, Sime Darby Auto ConneXion (SDAC) is enhancing its customer services by offering to bring new models to the customer’s home or office for a test-drive.

Added convenience for interested customers
The Home or Office Delivery Test Drive provides convenience to customers who may be busy or just don’t wish to travel to the showroom. The service is available within a 10-km radius of the customer’s chosen dealership.

SDAC FORD

To arrange for the test drive delivery, customers can either contact a Ford dealership nearest to them, submit an online test drive request via the SDAC-Ford website, or send a message to the Ford Digital Salesperson on the WhatsApp sales line at 019 204 1200.

“During this period, we understand that customers are in search of additional services for added convenience. That is why we are providing an additional option of delivering our test drive vehicles to our customers home or office to show our commitment of continuously enhancing our customer support and service,” said Syed Ahmad Muzri Syed Faiz, MD of Sime Darby Auto ConneXion.

Precautionary safety measures will be practiced by the sales consultant upon delivering the test drive vehicle. This includes the use of a face mask, recording of body temperature and sanitising the vehicle. The sales consultant will also be seated at the back to adhere to the current social distancing practices.

Showroom visitors welcome too
“Of course, customers are still welcome at our showrooms. For those who prefer to visit a Ford dealership, they can be assured that the necessary safety precautions to ensure health and safety are being practiced. This includes social distancing, temperature checks upon entering the premises, hand sanitiser dispensers located in the showrooms and frequent sanitising of high frequency touchpoints,” added Tuan Syed Ahmad Muzri.

Other existing touchpoints to assist customers in getting in touch with SDAC include the website chatbot to assist users on website navigation, Customer Care and Road Assist service line which is available 24/7 at 1300 38 3181, online book a service appointment, and submission of enquiries and feedback via the SDAC-Ford website.

Sime Darby Auto ConneXion (SDAC) has started a ‘Service Relief Promotion’ with savings on Ford vehicle service charges and parts. The promotion will run from today (June 10) until July 30, 2020.

During this promotion period, owners will enjoy more savings when they send their vehicles for servicing at authorised Ford service centres. Additionally, for peace of mind, a free 27-point vehicle inspection will be conducted by Ford-certified technicians to ensure their vehicles are in tip-top condition. This is particularly important for vehicles that may have been idle for the long period of the MCO.

“We always aim to deliver value-added benefits and services to our customers. People still need to go about their day-to-day activities in this time of uncertainties and we hope these savings will help lighten their load,” said Syed Ahmad Muzri Syed Faiz, MD of Sime Darby Auto ConneXion.

Up to 20% savings
Up to 20% Savings are offered on selected parts, all of which are genuine and original items approved by Ford, assuring quality and reliability. There’s also a 20% discount on brake and timing belt packages, up to 20% discount on lubricant packages, on top of the 10% discount on labour for the said packages (terms and conditions apply).

Commenting on the promotion, Jeffrey Gan, MD for Retail and Distribution, Malaysia, Sime Darby Motors, said: “We welcome customers who wish to come in-person to any of the Ford showrooms located nationwide, including Ford’s latest flagship showroom at Sime Darby Motors City, Ara Damansara. Ford’s latest flagship is the largest in Malaysia and is built on the 10.1-acre automotive complex of Sime Darby Motors City which comprise the latest Ford Signature brand retail design.”

“We would like to assure our customers that we have taken the necessary precautions to ensure the health and safety of our staff and visitors which includes, practicing social distancing. At certain showrooms, we require all visitors to perform temperatures checks upon entering the premise, in addition to supplying hand sanitiser dispensers located in the showrooms.” he added.

Ford Ranger
If you missed a required service because of the MCO restriction, your warranty will not be affected but you must schedule the service by June 30, 2020.

Safeguarding vehicle warranty
During the Movement Control Order period, customers may have been prevented from making a warranty service appointment before their warranties reached the expiry date or mileage limit. However, SDAC understands this was unavoidable and the warranty will not expire yet if they schedule their warranty service appointment before June 30, 2020.

Appointment needed for servicing
Owners are required to book an appointment prior if they wish to have their vehicle serviced. This is to ensure that there is no over-crowding at the service centres which will prevent social distancing. The Standard Operating Procedures specified by the authorities require social distancing and various measures to ensure hygienic conditions for the safety of customers and staff. These include the use of hand sanitizers, body temperature checks and facemasks.

Booking a service appointment can be done online at the SDAC-Ford website (www.sdacford.com.my/book-a-service-form) or by calling an authorised Ford Service Centre. The list of operational service centres can be found at this link: www.sdacford.com.my/owner/service-maintenance/operation-hours. Until the Ford Ranger came along in the 1990s, the pick-up truck was viewed as just a workhorse machine with minimal safety features. Then Ford decided that, rather than develop an ‘Asian Car’ based on a passenger car, it would instead make a truck its ‘Asian Car’. After all, it had decades of experience making trucks, especially for the US market, the home of pick-up trucks.

2020 Ford Ranger FX4

The carmaker built a huge new factory in Thailand with an investment of US$500 million to make the Ranger, primarily for the ASEAN market but with a longer term plan of becoming a global production hub for the model. In fact, by the beginning of the 2000s, the Ranger was being exported to over 100 countries and becoming a popular choice.

That it won awards in regions as different as Europe and ASEAN showed that it was a product which could meet a broad spectrum of customers’ needs, whether for personal transport or for business and heavy-duty work. And last year, the Ranger was also introduced in the US market as well.

Game-changer in truck segment
‘Built Ford Tough’ has been a strong point of the Ranger but the other reason for its popularity has been that it has been a stylish pick-up. In fact, the first Ranger was a ‘game-changer’ and influenced other carmakers to make their equivalent products more comfortable and more stylish. And Ford also made safety a high priority, introducing increasingly advanced safety systems with smart technology to protect the occupants.

The current range in Malaysia is perhaps the widest ever, with a choice of engines and variants to suit just about every requirement. At the top is the Ranger Raptor, a muscular-looking truck with performance that matches its looks. Today, Sime Darby Auto ConneXion (SDAC) has added a brand new variant – the Ranger FX4 – which is the first pick-up truck to be launched online in Malaysia.

“The New Ford Ranger FX4 is designed for customers who are looking for a truck with a lot more attitude, and those who take their truck on adventures while making use of its best-in-class towing and payload capabilities,” said Syed Ahmad Muzri Syed Faiz, MD of Sime Darby Auto ConneXion. “It truly is an uncompromised truck for the adventure seeker, and its addition to our line-up of nine variants in Malaysia further reinforces the Ranger’s versatility as a vehicle to suit every lifestyle.”

“Given the current COVID-19 situation, this online launch of the New Ford Ranger FX4 is appropriate in ensuring the continued social distancing guidelines outlined by the government,” added Tuan Syed Ahmad Muzri. “In an increasingly digital age, it is also in line with our strategy to innovate on ways to bring new experiences to consumers online. We are proud to be the first pick-up truck brand in the country to launch a new model digitally on two live platforms.”

While maintaining the tough and rugged image of all Rangers, the FX4 gains its own identity too with styling features based on a black theme. There’s a new ebony black mesh front grille and the 18-inch alloy rims are also finished in gloss black. The sports bar is also finished in matte black and if you are one of the first 150 buyers, it is provided free of charge.

Three colour choices are available and if the dark shades of Meteor Grey and Absolute Black don’t appeal to you, there’s also Arctic White which has a strong contrast between the black elements and the white bodywork.

Muscular engine with VGT
Powering the FX4 is a Ford 2.2-litre 4-cylinder diesel engine with a Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT). The VGT enhances the engine’s efficiency by varying boost according to conditions so that optimum output is available all the time. At peak, there’s 160 ps available with 385 Nm of torque continuously available from 1,600 rpm to 2,600 rpm. That means strong pulling power from standstill with the ability to also sustain high cruising speeds.

2020 Ford Ranger FX4

The power flows through a 6-speed automatic transmission with High and Low ranges to maximise the off-road capabilities of the FX4 while also giving smooth and economical running on highways. In the older trucks, it was necessary to stop the vehicle when switching ranges but with the Ranger, this can be done without stopping. Even better, you only need to rotate a dial instead of struggle with a second lever to engage.

The FX4 also comes with a Limited Slip Differential (LSD) on the rear axle. With this, there’s better stability on slippery terrain. Whenever one wheel spins as it loses grip, the LSD will immediately divert torque to the other wheel so that grip is not totally lost.

Premium ambience in car-like cabin
The passenger-car like interior of the Ranger was one of its original selling points, persuading many to switch from their sedans or hatchbacks to a pick-up truck – which also introduced them to a new lifestyle. For the FX4, a dark theme is used within, mirroring the exterior theme. The leather-accented seats have embossed FX4 logos on the backrests, while red stitching has been applied to the gear selector, centre console, instrument panel, centre console, door trims, handbrake and steering wheel. Special FX4-branded carpet mats also add to the exclusivity and complement the premium ambience of the cabin.

For entertainment on the move, there’s an infotainment system with an 8-inch touchscreen and it comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto so there’s easy connectivity with smartphones. Bluetooth is also available for other devices and Voice Recognition helps to keep the hands on the steering wheel and eyes on the road. SYNC is like a ‘control centre’ for many functions, some of which can be managed by just saying commands in simple language.

Needless to say, with everyone having one or more electronic devices these days, being able to recharge on the move is useful. In the FX4, there is a 12V socket (which you can plug a USB adapter into) as well as a USB port for charging.

Protecting occupants well
With its ‘Built Ford Tough’ credentials, the Ranger FX4 already has a robust bodyshell and chassis that can offer good passive protection. Additionally, there are airbag systems and ISOFIX childseat connectors in the cabin. But as it always better to prevent an accident from occurring in the first place, Ford has worked hard to add smart technologies that assist the driver to avoid or recover from a potential accident.

2020 Ford Ranger FX4

These driver assistance systems include ABS, Emergency Brake Assist, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, Electronic Stability Control with Traction Control, Rollover Mitigation (valuable for tall vehicles like trucks), Trailer Sway Control and Adaptive Load Control.

Additionally, standard features like rain-sensing wipers allow the driver to concentrate on driving more, while Hill Descent and Hill Launch controls make it safer going uphill or downhill. There’s also cruise control to help reduce fatigue on long highway journeys as the vehicle can be set to run at a desired speed.

The display screen on the dashboard also switches to a rear view of the FX4 when reverse gear is engaged. The bright and clear image from the camera mounted on the rear cargo panel gives a wide view so obstacles or even small children can be spotted while reversing. Together with parking sensors in the bumper, it certainly helps when parking the vehicle in tight spots!

2020 Ford Ranger FX4

Priced from RM126,888 (on-the-road, without insurance), the new Ranger FX4 comes with a manufacturer’s warranty of 3 years or up to 100,000 kms. It’s imported as a completely built-up model (CBU) from Thailand.

For the very first 150 customers nationwide who purchase the new Ranger FX4, SDAC will give complimentary accessories worth RM5,398. These are the matte black sports bar and executive window tinting, as well as a built-in Digital Video Recorder (DVR) with a range of smart and safety functions including high-definition (HD) recording, wide-angle viewing, night view recording and Mobile App connect via Hotspot. It also comes with 8GB memory card.

Additional upgrades to the include an additional USB charging port on the rearview mirror and LED projector headlamps for greater visibility while driving at night.

In the area of safety, which Ford trucks are highly noted for, the latest Ranger Raptor is now equipped with additional intelligent advanced driver-assist features. They are Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) with Vehicle and Pedestrian Detection, Forward Collision Warning, and Lane Departure Warning and Assist.

These advanced technologies are first-in-class and complement other smart technologies that can be found in the rest of the Ranger line-up.

“With the new enhancements to the Ford Ranger Raptor, this ultimate off-road truck is now perfected to conquer the streets, making it ideal for everyday use in addition to commanding the harshest terrains at thrilling speeds. We are confident that the Ranger Raptor will continue revolutionising the market for pick-up truck enthusiasts in Malaysia,” said Syed Ahmad Muzri Syed Faiz, MD of Sime Darby Auto ConneXion.

With Ford’s Performance DNA infused into the ‘Built Ford Tough’ Ranger line, the Raptor has set a new benchmark as the only factory-built performance truck for high-speed off-roading.

Its powerful 2-litre Bi-Turbo diesel engine produces 213 ps/500 Nm which goes to the rear or all four wheels through a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Extra ground clearance gives it class-leading water wading up to 850 mm while the long-travel FOX Racing Shox dampers can take on the roughest terrain. A Terrain Management System offers six modes, including a Baja Mode, which customise the engine and performance characteristics to the terrain for optimum grip and stability.

The Ranger Raptor is priced from RM208,888 (on-the-road, without insurance) and though it is more expensive that other pick-up trucks, demand for it has been surprisingly high. This could be because it’s not a ‘limited edition’ with just ‘look rugged and sporty’ bodykits but has genuine high-performance parts as well – and a factory warranty to go with it.

“During the Movement Control Order period, customers who have purchase enquiries on the New Ford Ranger Raptor may converse with us digitally via our newly launched Digital Salesperson, a WhatsApp Live Chat,” said Tuan Syed Muzri.
