UMW Toyota Motor has launched the 18th edition of its Toyota Eco Youth Program 2018. With the aim to educate participants on sustainable waste management practices, students from 11 selected schools will be trained on problem solving skills to address concerns on environment preservation.

Toyota Eco Youth Program primarily focuses on inculcating life skills to youth through project base learning. A 3-day training program was held prior to this launch, where students were taught on proprietary Toyota 8 Steps Problem Solving methodology and techniques.

Environment protection is a key component of UMW Toyota Motor’s corporate social responsibility activities and this eco education program is developed to encourage youth to come to the forefront to champion conservation of our habitat for a better quality of life. This year’s Waste Management theme emphasizes on coordination with government, community, public interest groups to cultivate good practices in minimizing waste and managing waste with minimal impact on the environment.

This program is conducted annually with collaboration and support from the Ministry of Education since 2001. UMW Toyota Motor has spent close to RM7 million for the program since its inception and hopes that students who benefited from this program become ambassadors in advocating environmental sustainability in the future.

In addressing the launching ceremony, the President of UMW Toyota Motor, Ravindran K, said “Our continuous commitment to Toyota Eco Youth program show cases the importance of educating youth to take meaningful actions to safeguard the environment in a sustainable manner. It is critical at this juncture, now, to address issues regarding environment conservation and reduction of carbon dioxide emission. The reduction in carbon dioxide will have direct impact on suppressing global warming, and hence mitigating climate change. The what and how, these students learn today will be useful to them tomorrow as decision makers”

On a global basis, Toyota Motor Corporation has established the Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050, which identified 6 key environmental issues to be tackled in the next three decades such as CO2 reduction, water optimization and establishing societies that practice recycling and an earth-friendly culture.

The launch ceremony signals the start of 2018 Toyota Eco Youth Program, with the students identifying projects related to waste management found within their local community. Research work and activities on proposed solutions is expected to take three months to complete.  This will be followed with a final evaluation of the project in August 2018.

Winners of Toyota Eco Youth program will be based on continuous evaluation of the project and the participating schools will be vying for cash prizes of RM10,000, RM7000 and RM5,000 for first, second and third placing respectively. Apart from contest on projects, prizes are also offered to categories for Best Presentation, Best Exhibition and Best Blog Site Report. Top winners of these categories will receive RM1000 each. Two of the best supportive teachers in the projects will be given RM500 each for their effort and supervision.

The inaugural Vios Challenge season reached its climactic finale in Technology Park Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur on 24th and 25th March 2018, bringing with it the thrills and excitement that Malaysians seldom witness on their home soil.

It had been touted as one of the most ambitious racing projects to be undertaken by a single car company but the initiative to introduce grassroots racing to the masses has been exceptionally successful judging by the crowds that came to the event in KL last weekend as well as in the earliest rounds in Batu Kawan, Penang,  MAEPS, Serdang and in Medini City, Johor.

The Vios Challenge is the focal point of the weekend where some 40 identically-built Toyota Vios race in three classifications namely Sporting, Super Sporting and Promotional. It is the integral part of the Toyota GAZOO Racing (TGR) Racing Festival where exciting and fun activities such as celebrity appearances, stage games, drift performances, car displays, carnival food and lots more are part of the draw to get families on a weekend outing.

“The Vios Challenge was aimed at bringing motor racing closer to Malaysians. We wanted everyone to appreciate motor racing in a fun yet safe environment and to make it a weekend outing for the whole family. Judging from the happy expressions of the crowds at each venue, I believe we have successfully brought an appealing event to everyone,” said President of UMW Toyota Motor Mr. Ravindran K.

Attendance at each venue has averaged over 21,000 spectators per weekend, making it one of the most popular locals Motorsport events in recent history. Undoubtedly, the quality of racing has been top notch, not only from the crème de la crème Super Sporting class but also from the Sporting and the Promotional classes that have given everyone lots to cheer from the get-go.

The drivers in the Promotional class in particular may have brought their star appeal to the event but their on-track performance has been nothing short of impressive. Shukri Yahaya for instance, is better known for his roles in blockbuster TV dramas. Yet by the final race in the TPM, his lap times in qualifying could have placed him on the second row of the Sporting class grid while actress Diana Danielle, a mother of two who confessed to forgetting how to drive a manual car during her racing school stint, would have made it into the top 10 of the same grid.

“This was our hope when we brought the concept to Malaysia. We wanted to expose motor racing to new participants and allow them to build on their own abilities; making them better racers and better drivers on the road,” said Deputy Chairman of UMW Toyota Mr. Akio Takeyama.

Mr. Takeyama would be the most qualified to speak on the matter as he himself strapped into a Toyota Vios every race weekend and battled it out with his fellow competitors in the Promotional class. Despite have no racing background, his race craft and car handling at the end of the season has made him a true competitor.

Beatboxing sensation Shawn Lee continued on his winning ways and claimed the series in his Promotional class, suffering only two losses throughout the eight races. However, it was a fellow drift driver in the Super Sporting class Tengku Djan who kept motor racing aficionados on the edge of their seats each time he took to the track.

Djan’s on-track antics and amazing car control was a sight to behold although the hard-charging William Ho made him work very hard for the title. The story of the series must be that of the young sensation Brandon Paul Anthony. The 20-year-old had previously never raced in a Toyota Vios and joined the series only in the second event in MAEPS. He then stormed up the ladder to seal his championship with a flourish in the TPM.

There was plenty of unpolished gems that emerged throughout the season and come the later half of 2018, some others may emerge when Season 2 of the Vios Challenge takes to the circuits.

Since being officially imported and distributed in Malaysia by UMW Toyota Motor from 2014, the Toyota Alphard and Toyota Vellfire (from 2016) have been in great demand by those wanting a luxurious MPV from Japan. To date, over 3,000 units have been sold through authorised Toyota showrooms nationwide, accounting for 50% of the premium MPV market.

For the 2018 model year, both models have received upgrades and improvements to make them even better value for money. The new specifications include a new engine and transmission and this new powertrain specification will only be available for units distributed by UMW Toyota Motor and sold by authorised Toyota dealers in Malaysia.

Toyota Alphard…

As before, the Alphard is available in two variants – the Alphard 3.5 Executive Lounge which offers Premium Luxury and the Alphard 3.5 which offers Advanced Luxury. Both variants now come with the new 2GR-FKS 3.5-litre V6 engine and advanced 8-speed electronically-controlled automatic transmission.

The powerful new engine has a D-4S injection system for optimum fuel delivery in all driving conditions. This system utilises high-pressure and low-pressure injectors to meet combustion needs throughout the engine speed range. The Variable Valve Timing-intelligent Wide (VVT-iW) system provides high torque from low to high rpm ranges. It uses the Atkinson cycle to enhance fuel economy and the Otto cycle for power.

Toyota Vellfire…

Like the new Alphard, the Vellfire has also received cosmetic changes which strengthen the distinctive cool and modern looks that give the model its unique identity. For the new model, the upper and lower parts of the three-dimensional two-part structure have a clearer expression at the front, strengthening the body’s overall sense of unity. This accentuates the rearward-flowing dynamic design, and the powerful solid impression of the lower body. 18-inch aluminium alloy wheels with a dynamic new design are fitted.

From the bonnet to the bumper, the structure is integrated into a single ingot-shaped grille design, accentuating the pushed-outwards impression of the centre and expressing modern luxury in a solid form. Fog lamp bezels, positioned low, together with the flared form of the corners, accentuate the wide and low stance. The aggressively shaped triangular fog lamp bezels, following current Toyota design cues, gives the bumper corners a more dynamic impression.

To match the cubic form of the front end of the Vellfire, the upper headLamps incorporate two square projectors. Together with the blue accent of the extension, this creates a cool expression and an advanced tech image. When activated, the turn signals show the direction of the vehicle’s intended movement by sequential illumination.

Yup, FIFTY proud new owners took delivery of their brand-spanking-new Toyota CH-R in a special ceremony / partayyyyy recently organised by UMW Toyota Motor.

The event was held at Technology Park Malaysia (TPM) , the venue for the final round of the Toyota Gazoo Racing Series being held this weekend of 24-25 March 2018 (details on that here).

Here’s a quick look at the CH-R (Compact High Rider) during its maiden public debut during the MAEPS Malaysia Auto Show thanks to EVO Aurizn:

Speaking at the function, Ravindran K., President of UMW Toyota Motor said, the delivery to the first 50 customers in Malaysia also mark the official introduction of the All New Toyota C-HR.

“Since being previewed last year, interest in the All New Toyota C-HR has been high. To date, we have received around 1,500 bookings for the model and because this is a unique model, we wanted to personally handover the vehicle to our first 50 customers,” he said.

“We are always grateful for the support given by our customers and they can be assured the best Toyota ownership experience with maintenance and services from fully trained technicians on the C-HR but also availability of replacements parts when needed. Furthermore, only with Toyota models sold by UMW Toyota Motor and its authorised dealers, they can enjoy a 5 years warranty with unlimited mileage,” Ravindran added.

Since its global debut, the All New Toyota C-HR has been a hit in every market that it has been launched in. Apart from its obvious looks, the model sits on Toyota’s New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform which is being used for many new Toyota models.

For the Malaysian market, the C-HR is introduced with one variant, a 1.8-litre petrol engine with 7-speed Sequential Shiftmatic CVT. Its safety features include ABS as standard with Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control (TRC) as well as Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) and a Blind Spot Monitoring system (BSM). The C-HR is also equipped with an Electric Parking Brake and Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) to prevent the vehicle from rolling backwards while moving on a steep slope.

The interior design concept is a departure from the conventional approaches and combines high-tech functionality with fashionable style. The driver-oriented area incorporates innovative details and intuitive technology with sharp and clear Optitron meters and a 4.2-inch Colour Multi-Information Display (MID) that keeps the driver informed of the vehicle’s operation. For enthusiast drivers, there’s also a G-monitor which shows the G-force exerted by the vehicle during cornering, acceleration or deceleration.

The inaugural Toyota GAZOO Racing (TGR) Racing Festival is building up to a climactic finale as the championship crown in each of the Vios Challenge categories remain up for grabs until the chequered flag is waved for the final time this season at the Technology Park Malaysia (TPM) in Kuala Lumpur.

The decider that will be held on March 24th and 25th will see all three class races of the Vios Challenge go down to the wire as the search continues for the very first champions of the series. You can read our previous coverage of the TGR Johor Bahru Round here.

“The essence of one-make racing has been reflected in the results we see today in the Vios Challenge. Newcomers, privateers and seasoned professionals have all had their share of the spoils in the winner’s circle, providing motor racing fans with some of the best high-quality racing we’ve seen in the country,” said President of UMW Toyota Motor Mr Ravindran K.

The battles in the Sporting and Super Sporting classes will be the most keenly watched with numerous drivers in contention for bragging rights as well as a shot at the brand new Toyota Vios that is being offered as the champion’s prize for each category.

Nineteen-year-old sensation Brendan Anthony who did not join the first race in Batu Kawan, Penang has consistently chalked up points in his subsequent races and is now just four points behind the sporting class championship leader and namesake Brendon Lim.

Rally sensation Kenneth Koh managed to stay out of trouble in the third Vios Challenge event held in Medini City, Johor in January has scored two useful podium finishes. He is a mere 12 points off the leader’s tally of 75 points. With 20 points awarded for a win, Koh has every chance of snatching the trophy from the Anthony and Lim.

In the Super Sporting Class, Tengku Djan survived various incidents in both his races at Medini City, Johor to hold a slender four-point lead in the championship over nemesis William Ho.

William also enjoyed a good run in Johor as he came away with one win and a third place, moving him up to second with 72 points. Third in the class is M7 Racing Team’s Syafiq Ali who put in some brilliant performances in Johor and sits 16 points behind Djan.

In the Promotional Class, Shawn Lee chalked up wins in almost every race except for one in MAEPS. While he enjoys a commanding lead in the series, he could still be overhauled by the on-form Shukri Yahaya who trails by 18 points. A non-finish in any of the final races by the beat-boxer would easily level any advantage he currently enjoys.

Despite facing less pressure to prove their worth as racing drivers, celebrities including Danny Koo, Diana Danielle, Fattah Amin, Geraldine Gan, Janna Nick, Shukri Yahaya and Venice Min have all shown renewed determination in Johor. Their on-track challenges have shown no lack of quality and can be expected to spoil the party for Shawn.

Entrance to the Toyota GAZOO Racing (TGR) Racing Festival’s Season 1 Finale remains free and there will be lots of activities, food, games and prizes throughout the weekend. To keep up to date on the developments of the Toyota GAZOO Racing (TGR) Racing Festival and the Vios Challenge, members of the public should follow Toyota GAZOO Racing Malaysia and UMW Toyota Motor on their homepage, FB and instagram. UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd (UMWT), distributor of Toyota and Lexus vehicles in Malaysia, has announced a Special Service Campaign (SSC) to inspect, and if required, replace the airbag sensor of certain units of the Toyota Corolla Altis, Lexus NX Lexus RX model.

This SSC was announced following the move by Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) to start a global Special Service Campaign regarding an Airbag Sensor which was announced on 31st January. Based on information received from TMC, the number affected are 2,800 units of Toyota Corolla Altis, and around 500 units of Lexus NX and Lexus RX. These cars were manufactured from June 2015 to January 2016 and distributed by UMWT and Lexus Malaysia.

The defect relates to manufacturing issues as there are possibilities that the insulation of Integrated Circuit (IC) chips in affected Pressure sensors and G sensors could peel off over time, creating an open circuit in the IC chip.  If this were to occur, the airbag warning light will illuminate. Further, the side/curtain airbags and/or front airbags can become deactivated and will not deploy when required to. This could increase the risk of injury to the occupants in the event of a crash.

TMC is currently working on obtaining the necessary parts for the SSC and when the parts are available, UMWT will notify affected owners to request them to bring their cars to an authorised Toyota or Lexus authorized service centre to make the necessary replacements. The work should take about 30 minutes to 4 hours (depending on model) and while it can all costs involved for the replacement will be borne by UMWT.

Owners of affected cars can contact any authorised Toyota service centre or call the Toyota Freephone at 1800-8-TOYOTA (869682).  For Lexus owners, customers can contact Lexus authorised dealers nationwide or contact its Freephone; 1800 88 53987 (1-800-88-LEXUS) or visit lexus.com.my.

Toyota owners can also visit Toyota’s Special Service Campaign webpage through this link: toyota.com.my to check whether their vehicle is involved, through Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) Checker. To those who have uploaded the Toyota Drive Apps, there is also a link to Toyota’s SSC page and the VIN Checker.  Information on other vital SSCs is also available on the webpage.

Instead of waiting for customers to wander into a Toyota dealership, the automaker has decided to take the showroom to them. Called the Toyota Go 2017 Roadshow, UMW Toyota Motor will be having the roadshow event at seven mall locations around the country this month.

The entire line-up which includes, passenger cars, SUVs, pick-up trucks and MPVs will be on display for for the general public to view and experience. Test drives will be available for customers to experience the vehicles’ full potential and find out more about the specifications and pricing.

The roadshow isn’t just a showroom on ‘wheels’ though, because it is actually meant to serve as a one-stop solution for owners and customers a like. The former will have the chance to find out more about the 10-star benefits offered by the company. It includes the Careplus packages for their servicing needs as well as professional repainting and repairing services at Toyota Body and Paint facilities around Malaysia.

It also serves as an opportunity to find out if their vehicles are part of the Special Service Campaigns. In recent times, the automaker had introduced one to replace the infiltrator module of the Takata airbag system of its vehicles.

Customers can meet with advisers to find out more about the various financing packages for hire-purchase loans. Those who prefer to purchase a pre-owned Toyota can meet with advisors from TopMark, which is a subsidiary of UMW Toyota Motor who will inform them on several pre-woned Toyota models and also evaluate the vehicles of those wishing to trade-in their old cars in order to purchase a new one.

There will also be a race prepared Vios that will be on display for the general public. The vehicle is what will be used for a series of one-make races called the Toyota Vios Challenge. It’s part part of the Toyota Gazoo Racing (TGR) Racing Festival.

In certain locations of the road show, popular celebrities participating in The Toyota Vios Challenge will also be present. As of now, the automaker has not divulged much regarding this issue, but we will let you know more as soon as we find out.

Besides these events, Toyota roadshow will also have activities to entertain the entire family which include an Outdoor Night Theater and a Petting Zoo. If you are interested, take a look at Toyota’s schedule below and plan your weekend accordingly.
