After yesterday’s racing in hot and sunny weather, the second racing session of Round 2 of the Vios Challenge at the Sepang International Circuit was run in both wet and dry conditions. But like yesterday, the competition was intense for both the new and existing drivers in the series which is now in its fourth season.

“Looking at all the action on and off the track, it was obvious that everyone in the community has been eager to get back to doing what they do best – racing! The competition was just as intense, if not greater, than it had been before the pandemic and this is precisely the boost of energy we all need to steer out of these challenging times,” said GAZOO Racing Malaysia’s Chief Motorsport Officer, Akio Takeyama.

“As an event organizer, one of the most demanding aspects of the weekend in these times has not so much been in managing the racing on the track but to ensure that all safeguards are in place and adhered to in order to protect everyone on site from the threat of COVID-19. This remains our number one priority,” he stressed.

The event was closed to the public and spectators in accordance with conditions set by the National Security Council (MKN) pertaining to the organizing of sporting events. However, some 2 million people watched the races online in Malaysia as well as anywhere that was connected to the internet.

SUPER SPORTING CLASS
Unlike Race 1 which was held in blistering hot conditions, Race 2 got underway in the rain with drivers not only having to contend with a slippery track but also poor visibility. Those conditions however, seemed to Favour M7 Japan Project Team’s Syafiq Ali who catapulted himself into the lead from fourth position in the first corner, followed closely by team mate Faidzil Alang.

However, all the excitement of Lap 1 was cut short when the Safety Car had to be activated and circulated for 3 laps. During this time, Syafiq led the convoy behind the Safety Car and ahead of Faidzil, followed by Hayden Haikal who started from pole position.

Mark Darwin who was running in fifth behind overall championship leader Tengku Djan Ley eventually spun going into the first corner after the restart, dropping to 12th. The fight at the front of the pack was extremely fierce with Cheah charging aggressively with the hope of making it a double race win. After passing Hayden, his duel with Faidzil for second position lasted for 2 laps before he got past and away. His sights were then set on catching race leader Syafiq who was 2.1 seconds ahead.

As conditions worsened, the Safety Car was again called out on lap 10. This erased whatever lead Syafiq had built up. As the rain got heavier, the race was eventually red flagged which meant all racing was suspended. However, the race was able to be resumed minutes later, again under Safety Car conditions, and with 1 lap to go, Syafiq held his ground to take the chequered flag just half a car’s length in front of Cheah, and Faidzil in third position.

SPORTING CLASS
Like the Super Sporting Class race, this race was also run in wet conditions. But the rain was just the ‘x-factor’ Crestmax Motorsport’s Adam Khalid needed to make a huge impact on the race results when he stormed from 15th position on the starting grid to win the 20-lap race.

Adam, who finished the race ahead of Aylezo Motorsport’s Mirza Syahmi Mahzan and Eric Yong who came in third, said: “The rain really helped me, and the team did an awesome job to prepare the car… it was just perfect and by the 6th lap, I found myself in the lead. From then on, I just kept my head down and focused on track ahead.”

ROOKIE CLASS
In the Rookie Class, 17-year-old Amer Harris was the highest placed young driver running seventh overall, in the race which shared the grid with the Super Sporting Class racers. Amer took the chequered flag ahead of fellow teenager Mika Hakimi and 14-year-old Putera Adam.

The race win was Amer’s second podium finish over the weekend, having completed Race 1 yesterday (Saturday) in third position. Finishing fifth and failing to make it four race wins in a row was Naquib Azlan, followed by Jwan Hii in fifth position.

PROMOTIONAL CLASS
The Promotional Class race was almost a repeat of Race 1’s results with actor Shukri Yahaya once again claiming race victory, his second for the weekend. It was a closely-contested 18-lap race, and he finished 7.1 seconds ahead of TV presenter Nabil Ahmad. In third place was fellow actor Zizan Razak.

Starting from fifth on the grid, Shukri piled on the pressure from the very beginning as he picked off one by one Wany Hasrita, Akio Takeyama, and singers Nabila Razali and Khai Bahar to move into the lead.

“I realized that I can be rather impatient in past races and that led to some bad decisions and mistakes on track. Patience is very important in racing. I’ve also been working really hard at improving my driving skills and I made a conscious effort over the last 7 months of break to work on my driving and racecraft on a simulator – that has helped a great deal to prepare me for this weekend,” said Shukri.

With two race victories, both Shukri and Zizan now have a solid chance of taking the overall championship title in the Promotional Class and that is what he is eyeing for. “As a super senior in the class by virtue of this being my fourth season in the Vios Challenge, I owe it to myself and my fans to become champion. I’m definitely going for it!” said Shukri.

Round 3 to be a night race
Round 3 and the season finale of the Vios Challenge will be held on November 20/21, again at the Sepang International Circuit. However, there will be a twist as it will be a night race! At this time, it is not known yet whether conditions will be relaxed to allow spectators to be present. Race starts at 2 pm in America/3 am on Monday in Malaysia

After circulating around Europe since April, the Formula 1 World Championship crosses the Atlantic to the USA for Round 17. The event is at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) in Austin, Texas, which has to cancel its race last year due to the severity of the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s a venue that the teams have always been happy to visit since it first joined the championship in 2012.

The 5.513-km long circuit with 20 turns offers drivers a variety of challenges. The first sector features a wide, blind first corner that allows for multiple lines, followed by a sequence of rapid changes in direction similar to Suzuka’s Esses. A car with good balance will have an advantage.

The second sector has a long high-speed straight followed by a heavy-braking overtaking point at Turn 12. The cars approach this turn after having traveled the long straight and must lose almost 240 km/h in order to set the braking point up right. They go from 333 km/h to 94 km/h in just 2.52 seconds and 125 metres.

During that time, the drivers are subject to 5.8g in deceleration or almost 6 times their body weight. So a driver weighing 70 kgs will feel like he weighs almost 420 kgs, which requires a high level of fitness to be able to cope with that and control the car properly over 50 times during the race.

Compared to the motorcycles, the single-seaters complete the race 30 seconds sooner because they travel a good part of the corners at a faster speed and sometimes don’t need to brake. Of the 10 braking sections on COTA, Brembo technicians have classified three as demanding on the brakes, one is medium difficulty and five are light. ​

Commenting on the conditions at COTA, Pirelli’s Head of F1 and Car Racing, Mario Isola, said that despite the circuit having been resurfaced for around 40% of its total length, there’s not a huge difference in terms of abrasion compared to the last F1 race in 2019. Several bumps are also still present despite some surface ‘milling’ – a process designed to smooth out the asphalt.

“The biggest difference has instead been the weather, with both track and ambient temperatures considerably warmer than the cool conditions experienced a couple of years ago. As expected in today’s warm temperatures, there was a bit of overheating on the soft C4 compound rear tyre, which is quite stressed given the severe traction demands of this circuit in the final sector especially,” he said.

“A two-stop strategy is the more likely, with the high speeds and abrasive surfaces here taking a lot out of the tyres. At the same time, the relatively low pit stop time loss and number of overtaking opportunities mitigate the advantages of a one-stopper. There are a number of different two-stoppers that are quite closely matched, depending on the race circumstances, so this looks set to be an intense strategic battle,” added Isola.

The championship for drivers still remains close at the very top, with Max Verstappen just 6 points ahead of Lewis Hamilton after the 16th round in Istanbul. For the constructors championship, Valtteri Bottas’ win in the Turkish GP plus Hamilton’s 5th placing gives the Mercedes-AMG team a 36-point lead ahead of Red Bull Racing. The Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS team and Lewis Hamilton have been dominant at COTA but Verstappen’s pole position for today’s race may be the beginning of a change.

After a 7-month break – with half of the time due to restrictions arising from the COVID-19 pandemic – the Vios Challenge of the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Festival (TGR Festival) was on again today. The participants were eager to go racing so it was competition at its most intense in Round 2 at the Sepang International Circuit.

Unfortunately, although the Movement Control Order (MCO) has been relaxed, there are still restrictions set by the health authorities and spectators are not permitted at the circuit to watch. To make sure fans throughout Malaysia could still watch the action, there have been live broadcasts today over Toyota Malaysia’s website and Facebook pages.

All four classes of competitors returned to their dogfights, intent on improving the positions in the championship. The four classes are the Rookie Class, Promotional Class, Sporting Class and Super Sporting Class.

Two of the four new faces making their debut in the Vios Challenge impressed with Malaysian touring car driver Mitchell Cheah and Sepang Talent Development Program driver Ady Rahimy winning in the Super Sporting Class and Sporting Class, respectively. Two other drivers also making their debut in the Vios Challenge are veteran and 2-time Merdeka Millennium Endurance Race champion Faidzil Alang and Malaysia Championship Series driver, Lau Seng Kiat.

“We could not have asked for a more exciting restart to the season, and with the inclusion of 4 new drivers into the series, the Vios Challenge one-make series continues to attract a competitive field of Malaysian racers, “said GAZOO Racing Malaysia’s Chief Motorsport Officer, Akio Takeyama, who has also been a participant since the series began.

All the cars in the Vios Challenge have identical performance and specifications and inspected by officials before and after each race. So the racing is all about driver skill rather than power, and makes for close competition.

SUPER SPORTING CLASS
In the Super Sporting Class for veteran and skilled drivers, touring car driver Mitchell Cheah powered to victory from start to finish in the 20-lap race, followed by Laser Motor Racing’s Mark Darwin 0.7 seconds behind, and M7 Japan Project Team’s Sayfiq Ali in third place.

Cheah, driving for 23 Motors, set a blistering pace throughout practice and qualifying to clock 1:25.618 for pole position. Being on the front row of the grid, he made a brilliant start in the race but was only able to marginally pull away from the rest of the field behind who were locked in a fierce contest for second and third positions.

In the opening laps of the race, Telagamas Toyota’s Freddie Ang was in contention for second position with Mark in third, and championship leader Tengku Djan Ley in fourth position, but 8 laps later, Mark overtook to consolidate his place for second place. Ang tried to hang on for third but could not stop a charging Syafiq who inevitably proved to become the biggest gainer in the race, finishing third despite starting from as far back as ninth on the grid.

Carrying an extra 40 kgs of ballast by virtue of winning two consecutive races in Round 1, Tengku Djan struggled all weekend with the extra weight, managing only fourth quickest, before finishing Race 1 in 14th and one lap behind after a brush with the concrete on the exit of Turn 8 which caused a puncture.

SPORTING CLASS
Making his Vios Challenge debut, Ady Rahimy was hardly intimidated by the competition to lead the race from start to finish. He very quickly opened a gap of 4.5 seconds but that lead disappeared by the 15th lap when the Safety Car came out on the track. When the race resumed, there was only 1 lap to the finish but Ady gave it all he could and sprinted to the finishing line closely pursued by Dream Chaser’s Bradley Benedict Anthony, with Distinctive Model’s Clement Yeo rounding up the top 3 positions.

The battle for second and third positions was intensely fierce with Yeo, Aylezo Motorsports’s Mirza Syahmi and Bradley exchanging places on several occasions with less than half a second separating all three drivers. Bradley however, attacked consistently despite coming under pressure and managed to get ahead of Yeo in the penultimate stages of the race.

ROOKIE CLASS
In the Rookie Class, the 20-lap race was won by current championship leader Naquib Azlan who collected his third straight victory in 3 races for a perfect track record so far. Coming in second was Mika Hakimi while in third was Amer Harris. Starting from third on the grid, Naquib paced himself patiently, observing the battle ahead involving Putera Adam and pole position driver Mika before mounting his attack for the lead in the closing stages of the race.

Putera Adam, 14, had driven a compelling race that saw him clinch the lead in the 11th lap. He was within 5 laps of what could have potentially been his first ever race victory until a race incident forced him into retirement. Finishing fourth was Jwan Hii.

PROMOTIONAL CLASS
This class has always been a crowd-puller and though they were not physically at the track, it’s a sure bet that the fans of the various celebrities taking part were cheering them on from their homes. Starting from pole position, Shukri Yahaya made a great start and held the lead from start to finish. Finishing second was Nabil Ahmad followed by Nabila Razali in third place.

The opening stages of the race saw Shukri pull away with a comfortable lead as Nabil and fellow racer Zizan Razak tussled for second position. Both drivers were unwilling to give up an inch and exchanged places several times in Lap 2 before contact between the two of them resulted in a damaged suspension for Zizan who was forced into retirement.

That incident promoted Akio Takeyama to third, but it also brought out the Safety Car for 2 laps. The fight for third was intense with Takeyama having to fend off challenges from Ahirine Ahirudin and Nabila Razali for several laps. The two ladies eventually got past Takeyama. But GAZOO Racing Malaysia’s Chief Motorsport Officer did not give up easily and tried fighting back for the lost position. His determination, however, put his car in contact with Ahirine’s which promoted Nabila into third.

For Shukri, the Safety Car erased whatever gap he had built and he once again found himself under pressure from Nabil. The actor however, kept his head down and put in consistent lap times over the  remaining 10 laps to build his lead from 3.8 seconds to a massive 14.7 seconds ahead of Nabil for the race victory with Nabila in third. The biggest gainer in the race however, proved to be Nabila who jumped 5 places from eighth on the grid to third on the podium.

The second race of Round 2 of the Vios Challenge will be run tomorrow and w all the action will be broadcast live on the Toyota Malaysia website  at www.toyota.com.my, and on the Facebook pages of Toyota Malaysia and Toyota GAZOO Racing Malaysia.

The Nissan Silvia is one of the models of the Japanese sportscar era that is fondly remembered by enthusiasts. It first appeared in 1964 at the Tokyo Motor Show and would continue through 6 generations before production ended almost 20 years ago. Since then, many have hoped for its return but in the 21st century, every model must have a business case, meaning sufficient volume to justify investment in development and sportscars don’t necessarily command sufficiently big numbers.

Nevertheless, designers are not prevented from dreaming and some of them reimagine the classic models that once drew people to showrooms and impressed with their performance. When Matthew Weaver, Vice President of Nissan Design Europe was asked to reimagine a car from Nissan’s history for an electric future, he chose to remix the iconic Silvia CSP311.

This particular Silvia was not actually the first generation but it was the one that was shown in the Tokyo Motor Show in 1964. It is a rare model – in fact, so rare that even some of Nissan’s most seasoned employees haven’t seen one.

The Silvia CSP311 was presented as a Datsun Coupe 1500 at the 1964 Tokyo Motor Show and sold as a Silvia in 1965. It was the work of Nissan designers with advice from a an ex-BMW consultant, Albrecht Graf von Goertz. Only 554 units were produced over 4 years and each one was mostly handbuilt, using the chassis of the original Datsun Fairlady. It had a 4-cylinder 1595 cc engine producing 90 ps/132 Nm
In 1965, the Silvia CSP311 was the first sportscar used by the Japanese police. It was selected for its high performance – a top speed of 165 km/h – which was deemed necessary for patrol cars on the newly opened highways.

“The Silvia was ahead of its time, in a very quiet, understated way. It has aged very well and would still have its place on the roads today. It’s also a great example of what is expected of a global product: high quality and universally appealing,” said Weaver.

“By re-designing this car for the future, we wanted to pay homage to that heritage. One of the most distinguishable features is the one clean line connecting the upper and lower body. In this version, we accentuated its presence even more by having a clean and sharp cut into the top of the wheel arches. Also keeping in mind the world of the future, we felt the design naturally suited being an electric vehicle,” he explained.

Innovation with classic design elements
Being an electric vehicle gave the designers the opportunity to extend the clean surfacing around the front because an electric powertrain has far lower cooling requirements. It would be possible to have that characteristic sharp nose of the Silvia without needing a grille where radiators are traditionally located. To bring the CSP311 into the 21st century, Weaver and his team took a lot of important. It was refined, making for a purer form and the lines made even cleaner.

Electrification of the vehicle allowed envision the use of today’s innovations alongside classic design facets. With the increasing electrification of mobility, most car designers find themselves facing the challenge of infusing the heritage of their respective brands, while also reinventing what cars can and should be. Every design starts with a blank piece of paper. Then come sketches and many 2D designs, followed by digital and 3D clay prototypes.

New design opportunities with electrification
In the age of electric cars, the designers can use the same techniques to come up with new ideas, but they can play by a whole new set of rules. Previously, designers had to work alongside engineers to find a way to accommodate an internal combustion engine, radiators and exhaust pipe. Now, those once essential components have been replaced by battery packs, inverters and small motors. It’s a big change but also offers a huge opportunity to do things differently.

“The key components of an electric vehicle are quite different and they can be packaged differently, compared to an internal combustion engine car. Consequently, the Silvia we’ve reimagined here would have a larger interior than its exterior dimensions would suggest. Customers of the forthcoming Nissan Ariya electric crossover will really appreciate how spacious and comfortable that interior is, thanks to its efficient packaging,” said Weaver.

Today’s designers have to think about new functionality and the apparatus that enables it, such as radars, cameras and sensors. But it goes deeper than that and they also have to find new ways to do the same thing they’ve always tried to do: generate an emotional response and create a lasting connection with customers.

Greater demands for efficiency
“Efficiency improvement is the target. The future will see cars created through a different lens, in which efficiency is a key requirement,” noted Marco Fioravanti, Vice President Product Planning, at Nissan Europe. “It is even more important for electric vehicles because at high speeds, the aerodynamics can minimise the negative impact of drag on the vehicle’s range.

Fioravanti and his team look into automotive trends to understand what customers will want and need up to 20 years from now. “So, we are seeing a new generation of electric crossovers that are slightly lower, wider and longer in order to improve the aerodynamics, while keeping a similar interior space and giving a higher seat position than a traditional sedan or hatchback. This is possible thanks to the improvements we can make to the layout of an electric vehicle to accommodate its next generation of technology,” he explained.

Looking further ahead, what customer requirements, technological advancements and legislation will affect design? One thing that is certain is that cars are changing. They will look and function differently in order to be more user-friendly, energy-efficient and practical. Reinventing classic cars for the modern, electrified world, even if they only start out as sketches, proves that future possibilities are endless.

Like Type R, ‘Si’ has always set pulses racing for Honda fans as this designation has signified the high-performance Honda models. Young driving enthusiasts, especially in America, enjoyed the affordable high-performance for 4 decades with this model.

Now comes an all-new Civic Si which is based on the 11th generation model. Unlike previous Si models, the bodystyle is no longer that of a 2-door coupe but is a 4-door sedan only. However, it stands out not only with the exclusive Blazing Orange Pearl finish with gloss black trim but also with functional aerodynamic aids that improve its performance.

A front spoiler hidden under the car and a gloss black rear spoiler mounted on the bootlid add downforce to improve high speed stability. The upper front bumper design is more aggressive, and its rear bumper has been reshaped to reveal two large oval exhaust tips.

Better than ever before
‘Best-handling’, ‘best-equipped’ and ‘most fun-to-drive’ are used to describe the new Civic Si, and to deliver all that, it has an updated high-output VTEC 1.5-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with usefully broader power curves than before. Maximum power output is 200 ps with 260 Nm of torque.

Previous Civic Si had 2-door coupe bodystyle which is no longer available.

A new single-mass flywheel is 26% lighter than the dual-mass unit used in the previous Si. The flywheel’s 30% reduction in inertia gives the  engine snappier throttle response for a sportier driving experience, while also improving drivability. To maximize available traction when accelerating, a helical limited-slip differential is standard at the front axle.

Manual 6-speed with rev-matching
The Civic Si comes with a manual transmission, a 6-speeder with improved shift feel and 10% shorter throws. A new, more rigid shift lever mounting bracket and a new leather-wrapped aluminium shift knob similar to the Civic Type R’s contribute to the improved feel.

For the first time, the Civic Si has a rev-matching system directly from the Civic Type R. With the same 430 m/s response time as Civic Type R in Sport mode, the new rev-matching system will ‘blip’ the throttle when it detects a downshift, quickly and perfectly matching revs for smooth transitions between gears.

In addition to Normal and Sport driving modes, the car’s updated Drive Mode system now includes an Individual mode that allows the driver to individually select engine response, steering effort, and even instrument panel display colour parameters for a more personal driving experience. Sport mode adds throttle response, decreases steering assist, deactivates the idle stop system, allows drivers to select rev match on or off, and changes the instrument accent lighting from white to red.

Improving the sound of the engine is a new dual-coil silencer exhaust system that increases exhaust flow 27% compared to Civic Touring. To complement the engine’s natural exhaust note inside the cabin, the new Civic Si uses an improved Active Sound Control system that can produce high-quality sound over a wider range of engine rpm.

Most rigid Civic Si ever
In terms of body stiffness, this is said to be the most rigid Civic Si ever. To maximize handling and driving dynamics, the spring rates are 8% stiffer in front and as much as 54% stiffer in the rear compared to the Civic Sedan. The dampers have also been tuned specifically for the Si. The front MacPherson struts have reinforced upper mounts to handle the increased cornering loads, and thicker front and rear stabilizer bars (compared to Civic Sedan) to minimize body roll.

With all that extra performance, the engineers have made sure that the Civic Si has good stopping power. It is fitted with larger brakes than the standard Civic Sedan and there are also 235/40R18 performance tyres.

Driver-focussed cabin
The driver-focused cabin has Si-exclusive body stabilizing sport seats with built-in head restraints and more prominent shoulder and lower thigh side supports. The lower cushion has been raised by about 12 mm at the front, providing better thigh support to reduce fatigue on long drives.

The seat upholstery has embroidered Si logos and red contrast stitching are standard. Other sporty touches include sport pedals, and red contrast stitching. The red trim on the signature metal honeycomb dash panel of this new generation serves both form and function as it beautiful visually conceals the air vents for a clean uncluttered design.

Besides having a large 9-inch HD colour touchscreen, there is a 7-inch colour instrument display with a digital tachometer on the left side, a multi-information display in the centre and a physical speedometer dial.

The 09 is SPA-based and as with the other models, it was designed in Gothenburg, Sweden and carries Lynk & Co’s ‘Megacity Contrast’ design concept. This concept is inspired by the lifestyle of youthful urbanites from megacities such as London, New York, Paris, Shanghai, and Tokyo, and offers users a bold and tech-laden mobility experience.

Brand’s first large SUV model
The 09 is the first large SUV from Lynk & Co and offers 6 or 7-seat accommodation. It is one of the first models to be available as a hybrid only – either with a mild-hybrid or plug-in hybrid, both powertrains using a 2-litre turbocharged engine, 8-speed automatic transmission and either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Full details are not available yet but the 09 can be considered technically related to the latest Volvo XC90 which also uses SPA.

Since rolling out its first vehicles in 2017, Lynk & Co has delivered nearly 600,000 units. While it uses direct selling in China (through 319 sales and experience centres), its approach in Europe has been to establish ‘Lynk & Co Clubs’ where members and users meet, hang out, and share experiences. The Clubs, which represent a new first in industry ‘Mobility Membership’ business model, are presently in Belgium, Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands, with plans to expand into Spain, France and other countries in the near future.

The brand will appear in the Gulf region in the fourth quarter of 2021 and will begin Asian market expansion thereafter.

Mercedes-Benz has finalized the planning for a regional After-Sales Logistics Centre in Malaysia which will start operations from 2024.The German carmaker has signed a long-term lease agreement for the location and will partner with Tiong Nam Logistics Solutions Sdn Bhd to establish the new facility in Senai Airport City outside Johor Bahru.

The warehouse size of the planned location will be approximately 1,000,000 square feet. The building management system of the new warehouse will be equipped with the latest storage and material-handling systems. Operation of the facility will be by Mercedes Benz Parts Logistics Asia Pacific (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd, a 100% subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz AG.

The new distribution centre will be a part of the global Daimler AG After-Sales Supply Chain Network and will serve as a distribution site for spare parts in the Asia-Pacific region and other countries. It will take care of the importation, the storage as well as the regional management of spare parts and accessories distribution.

Historically strategic location 
Historically, Singapore’s location at the southern tip of the Malayan peninsular has made it a strategic point for trade. It served as an ideal transit point between East Asia and Europe, and even Australia, hence its development as a bustling trading port. Over the years, while Singapore has been an obvious choice for regional storage by various companies, nearby Johor has also become attractive for logistics activities.

Parts from the regional facility are sent to dealers for use at authorised service centres or for retail sale.

In 2003, the BMW Group moved its regional parts storage facility from Singapore to the Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) in Johor and then in 2017, it again relocated the facility to an industrial zone adjacent to Senai Airport. The facility is a logistics warehouse and parts distribution centre serving over 20 countries.

The Volkswagen Group likewise moved its regional parts facility from Singapore to PTP in 2016. It stores tens of thousands of parts for the Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda and Volkswagen commercial vehicle brands of the German group for distribution to over 20 markets.

Having a storage facility in Johor (or Singapore) is useful for the carmakers as it can speed up deliveries to customers on this side of the world. Customers will benefit as delivery times can be shortened compared to having them come all the way from Europe.  The proximity to the airport as well as the port also mean that logistics can be more efficiently managed.

At last, after the forced suspension of public activities – including motorsports – the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Festival can resume and with it, the second round of the Vios Challenge. As with the first round in March, Round 2 will also be run at the Sepang International Circuit this weekend (October 23/24).

Unfortunately, spectators will not be allowed to watch the racing from the stands as the health authorities do not permit such gatherings at this time. Therefore all the action will be broadcast live on the Toyota Malaysia website  at www.toyota.com.my, and on the Facebook pages of Toyota Malaysia and Toyota GAZOO Racing Malaysia.

This second round is part of the fourth season of the popular Vios Challenge, a one-make series that has grown in popularity. As many of the participants have gained more experience with each season, the racing has also become more competitive. And because the cars are all technically similar – and strict inspections ensure that – the racing is close and what matters more is driver skill.

Round 1 brought out the best in all the racers, some going on to stamp an early sign of dominance in the opening races (two per round) of the season, while several newcomers demonstrated talent that have all the makings of emerging champions.

The Vios Challenge consists of 4 classes, including the Rookie Class which has 5 graduates of the GAZOO Racing Young Talent Development Program. These are promising racers who are stepping up from karting and sim racing to racing in a real saloon car for their very first time. There is also the ever-popular Promotional Class which has 10 local celebrities who are closely followed by their thousands of fans across the country.

The more serious drivers (not to say those in the Rookie Class and Promotional Class are not serious) are in the Sporting Class for amateur drivers and the Super Sporting Class for the veteran and professional drivers.

The battle of the rookies is currently being led by Naquib Nor Azlan, whose transition from sim racing to real racing has had little impact on his dominance on the racing track, virtual or otherwise. Naquib won the first two races of the season, closely chased by 17-year old Amer Harris and Mika Hakimi.

The Super Sporting Class see the dominance of professional driver, drifter and GAZOO Racing Ambassador, Tengku Djan Ley who was victorious in both season-opening races. Other contenders in the running include last season’s runner-up Mark Darwin, last  season’s second runner-up Freddie Ang, and accomplished veterans the likes of Boy Wong, William Ho, Kenny Lee, Keifli Othman, Syafiq Ali and former Sporting Class champion Brendan Paul Anthony. Also competing in the class is teenager Hayden Haikal who was last year’s Sporting Class champion and has been upgraded.

An individual who has been equally dominant in the season opener is actor Zizan Razak who, like  Tengku Djan and Naquib Azlan, also rejoins Round 2 with a perfect 2-race victory in Round 1 despite  being in his first ever season of the Vios Challenge. Others competing in the Promotional Class include actor Shukri Yahaya, actress Janna Nick, presenter Nabil Ahmad and singers Wany Hasrita, Nabila Razali and Khai Bahar. They will be joined by singer/song writer Talitha Tan and television personality Ahirene Ahirudin.

The Sporting Class remains a class that is still too close to call with Adam Khalid and Haji  Sutan Mustaffa Salihin each with one race victory to their name. 19  competitive drivers will be gunning for the chance of collecting more points this weekend and ending the season as champion.

“We are extremely grateful that the season can continue, and I am sure that all the racers are eager  to get back into action. I do not foresee the long break having an adverse impact on their  performance. Instead, like Round 1, the competition will be even stiffer and closer all the way to the  chequered flag,” said GAZOO Racing Malaysia’s Chief Motorsport Officer, Akio Takeyama, who is also a racing driver himself.

It’s taken a while for the new Land Rover Defender to arrive in Malaysia but that’s understandable. The world has not been operating ‘normally’ since early 2020 which was just after the Land Rover’s new SUV was launched at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show. With lockdowns in the UK and in Malaysia, goods were either unable to be shipped or took longer.

Anyway, the first shipment finally arrived in March this year and although Jaguar Land Rover Malaysia (JLRM) had plans to launch it, the imposition of the second long MCO meant that nothing could be done until now. Nevertheless, they were able to get the necessary approvals for the product done and it was a matter of waiting till the country reopened.

Today’s launch of the New Defender took place at the flagship showroom at Sime Darby Motors City in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, as well as online, saw two versions of the model being introduced. Both are the longer Defender 110 and available with either a  2-litre Ingenium 300 ps/400 Nm 4-cylinder engine or a 3-litre mild hybrid powertrain incorporating a 6-cylinder petrol engine generating a total of 400 ps/500 Nm. The latter also get a power boost from a 48V electric supercharger.

Intelligent and advanced 4×4 drivetrain

As with all Land Rovers past and present, all four wheels are powered. Unlike the early 4×4 systems, the permanent all-wheel drive system in the New Defender is also intelligent and optimum traction is provided on all surfaces. The Defender is also the first Land Rover to feature Configurable Terrain Response, which allows drivers to fine-tune a range of settings to suit the conditions more precisely than ever before. A new Wade program optimizes the vehicle for crossing water, with a world-class maximum wading depth of up to 900 mm.

One thing which the hardest of hardcore off-roaders may not be happy about is the departing from the traditional body-on-frame construction. With the New Defender, , Land Rover’s engineers designed the new D7x (for extreme) monocoque structure that is said to be the stiffest body structure the brand has ever produced. Furthermore, it uses aluminium to reduce weight, this material having been associated with Land Rovers from the beginning and contributing to their long lives.

The new body architecture also allows for ground clearance of 291 mm and a wheelbase of 3022 mm, which is 99 mm longer than a Discovery). The introduction of air suspension helps transform the 4×4’s on-road handling and supports its all-terrain capability, providing an off-road ride height lift of 75 mm and ride comfort across all surfaces. An additional 70 mm of lift means the air system can raise the body by a maximum of 145 mm when needed, while the Elegant Arrival mode automatically lowers the body by 40 mm to make getting in and out easier.

Though everything about the model is totally new (compared to the original Defender), the silhouette in profile has strong elements of the original iconic shape. Gerry McGovern, the Design head and Guardian of Land Rover DNA, made sure that the New Defender would be recognisable by incorporating many ‘trademarks’ of the original.

These include the purposeful upright stance, Alpine roof lights and a chamfered roofline. The tailgate is also side-hinged – not so common on SUVs these days – and the spare wheel is still mounted on the back door. The latter is something that gives authenticity to the model as a 4×4 SUV, something which designers of other models think is no longer necessary.

Functional cabin, 21st century technology

The original Defender’s cabin essentially evolved from the early models. It was thus purely functional and even the last versions still maintained that simplicity which was appreciated by adventurers who did not need unnecessary fitments.

For the New Defender, the interior designers were mindful of this and have cleverly blended the original features – like exposed elements – with 21st century technologies. This approach might even be welcome by those hardcore enthusiasts who used to appreciate simplicity and functionality without complaining about comfort. Today, they are older and it is likely that they too would not complain about not having wind-down windows or manually adjusted seats.

The New Defender is packed with convenience features that every modern premium vehicle has. For example, the advanced Pivi Pro infotainment system is coupled with a Meridian Sound System and the next-generation touchscreen requires fewer inputs to perform frequently used tasks. Thanks to external cameras, the driver can see ‘through’ it and observe the vehicle’s underside and wheels – a great asset on unknown and uneven terrain.

The ClearSight Interior Rear View Mirror offers both a conventional reflected image as well as a real-time digital image captured by a small camera on the roof. The digital image can be switched on when needed, eg if the rear view is blocked by passengers’ heads or tall cargo.

In standard configuration, the New Defender is a 5-seater with two rows of seats. Customers can also specify 5+2 seating if they feel that they will carry more people often. The Click and Go System integrated base unit allows for the integration of additional accessories should there be a need.

The cargo area can be expanded varied between 1,075 litres and 2,380-litres with a maximum payload of up to 900 kgs. As the rear door is side-hinged, loading is easy even when the vehicle is close to a wall or tree as the door can be opened a bit and items slipped in.

The New Defender 2.0 is priced from RM798,000 while the 3-litre version starts from RM998,800 (prices exclude roadtax, registration and insurance as well as 50% of sales tax). However, as the entre first shipment has already been taken, those who order one will not be able to enjoy the sales tax exemption given by the government (very unlikely they will extend again) because the next deliveries will only be in 2022.
