D-MAX

Ever since the latest generation of the Isuzu D-MAX made its debut in Malaysia in 2021, sales have kept growing. Already popular in its previous generation, the substantial changes in styling and more premium nature of the new truck attracted even more customers.

With average monthly orders much higher than for previous generation, it’s not surprising that the total number sold in 2022 was just slightly short of being double the number achieved in 2021. During 2022, Isuzu Malaysia delivered 9,211 units of the D-MAX nationwide, exceeding its original target of 8,000 units and eclipsing the previous record of 6,480 units in 2016. Given the disruptions to supply that affected the whole industry, perhaps the number could have been even higher if more vehicles had been available.

From the fashion world back to nature – that will be the journey for the Isuzu D-MAX when it once again participates in the Borneo Safari International Off-Road Challenge. This will be the 14th year that Isuzu Malaysia is supporting the event which was not run in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Isuzu Malaysia is providing 3 units of the D-MAX X-Terrain as Official Media Vehicles during the week-long event organised by the Sabah Four Wheel Drive Association (SFWDA). The vehicles were recently handed over by Isuzu Malaysia’s Marketing Manager, Alan Lee, to the association’s President, Hj. Faez Nordin.

For car companies, volume is crucial to the success of the business. One way to get volume is to cover many segments of the market so the bigger companies will have a broad range of products to compete in almost every segment. Of course, the products must also be appealing and sell well too.

So it’s impressive that Isuzu Malaysia, with just the D-MAX pick-up truck as its primary product (plus commercial vehicles), it has been among the top 10 brands in Malaysia. In fact, since being established in 2005, the company has mainly sold the D-MAX which has been locally assembled. And with each new generation being improved in many ways, annual sales kept rising.

Despite ongoing production issues for the whole industry, record sales of the D-MAX were achieved with 1,233 units delivered around the country in March this year. That was the company’s highest ever monthly sales volume in 18 years, and a big jump from the previous record of 885 units recorded in December 2014.

Following the debut of the latest generation a year ago, demand for the D-MAX has continued at high levels and like other companies, supplies are still not as much as Isuzu Malaysia would like. Nevertheless, the orders keep coming in and although it is not yet in the middle of its production cycle, the company has added enhancements to its flagship X-Terrain which already has an impressive list of features.

“The new-generation Isuzu D-Max remains our source of pride as it bridges the gap between how pick-up trucks should perform and what customers desire. The flagship D-MAX X-Terrain, in particular, sought to ensure customers enjoyed some truly stand-out features that make their motoring safer and more pleasurable,” said Isuzu Malaysia’s CEO, Shunsuke Okazoe.

For the latest D-MAX X-Terrain, there are now two more exterior colours – Silky Pearl White and Onyx Black. These join Valencia Orange, the distinctive finish that makes the D-MAX stand out even more among other pick-up trucks.

Another key addition is the Around-View Monitor that provides a 360˚ view on all sides of the vehicle. Using small camera around the vehicle, the imagery captured in real-time is merged into a simulated image that looks like the camera is above the vehicle. The view appears on the 9-inch display panel whenever reverse gear is selected, and there is a 3D guide to help the driver maneuver and position the truck. No more white knuckles parking the long vehicle!

For those who have new smartphones that can recharge wirelessly, there is a charging pad in the D-MAX now. Apart from being convenient as no cable is needed, the phone can be left on the pad and kept charged while having uninterrupted Bluetooth connectivity for music or maps without draining the phone battery.

Isuzu Malaysia has also added a welcome light, which gives a touch of class. LED lamps beneath the vehicle illuminate the surrounding foot areas when the doors are unlocked. When used in tandem with the follow-me home lights, the driver and passengers can move around the vehicle at night confidently as the ground will be well lit.

Finally, exclusive lighted scuff plates are provided and not only help protect the sills from minor scratches but also offers an added touch of elegance to the D-MAX X-Terrain. What we also hope Isuzu Malaysia will provide again are those ‘stealth’ side steps which automatically slide in and out.

“The popularity of the Isuzu D-MAX range, particularly the X-Terrain variant, remains healthy with many first-time owners reveling in life with a modern pick-up truck. Its inspiring safety, comfort and go-anywhere, do-anything versatility has led to a gradual migration of saloon car owners. I believe that with these new added features and colour choices, the D-MAX X-Terrain will continue to appeal to many more who will be tempted to convert,” said Chief Operating Officer, Kenkichi Sogo.

The updated Isuzu D-MAX X-Terrain is available for booking from today at all authorized Isuzu showrooms, with deliveries beginning from mid-July. The revised price for this version is now RM146,938.40 (without insurance), which is slightly more than before.

New Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain: Why other pick-up truck brands should be worried

ADVERTORIAL

In the late 1990s, licensing regulations for the use of pick-up trucks changed allowing them to be registered for private use like passenger cars. The development was very significant and gave Malaysians an alternative to the passenger car for personal transport. Furthermore, they were also not subject to excise duty due to the provisions of the ASEAN Free Trade Agreement, allowing their prices to be lower.

The development was significant as it saw rapid expansion of the pick-up truck segment. Tens of thousands of Malaysians switched to trucks over the years, finding them to be great for many different roles – daily transport, leisure activities and as a workhorse for those who had a small business.

Isuzu Motors, having had long experience in pick-up trucks and light commercial vehicles, took serious note of this trend and began to adapt its D-MAX truck to be more suited for personal use. Of course, all the original attributes such as go-anywhere capability, efficient and reliable powertrains and robust engineering were maintained and improved with each generation.

The best of the best
Today, the D-MAX is in its third generation which was launched in April 2021. Without a doubt, it can be considered the best D-MAX ever offered and the ‘best of the best‘ would be the X-Terrain version which is at the top of the range.

The D-MAX X-Terrain would be the ideal pick-up truck for anyone who is keen to switch to the ‘trucking lifestyle’. For starters, let’s consider the interior: back in the old days, pick-up truck interiors were pretty bare because they were used only for rough work. So there was no point putting in good materials or even providing comfort – and certainly, there was no air-conditioning. The pick-up trucks them would have been unappealing even if they could be used for personal transport.

2022 Isuzu D-MAX X-Terrain

Step (or more correctly, climb) inside and you will find a cabin which would be comparable to a passenger car’s. There’s no bare metal around as all surfaces are covered with trim pieces or soft materials. The seats have been thoughtfully structured for comfort with generous padding and good support. For enhanced comfort the seat cushion pads also feature Anti Vibration Elastic Comfort foam that can absorb vibrations more quickly than conventional cushion material.

The same convenience
You won’t miss anything that you had in your car when you move to a D-MAX X-Terrain because all the same convenience and connectivity features are present. The windows open and close at the touch of a switch and 9-inch display screen serves as a control centre for the infotainment system. You can transfer your favourite apps onto the system and access them from there using Apple Carplay or Android Auto, or Bluetooth connectivity. Voice commands can also be used for handsfree operation, making driving safer.

2022 Isuzu D-MAX X-Terrain

And yes, there is air-conditioning and it’s as efficient as the one you would have had in your car. Dual-zone distributions brings cool air throughout the cabin and there are also vents for the rear passengers to stay cool. The driver and front passenger car set their own preferred temperature or the system can be left on AUTO and keep the environment cool and comfortable.

Even for those who are not drivers, the transition from passenger car to the D-MAX X-Terrain will be seamless as the rear seats are just as comfortable. There are lots of storage spaces for devices and small stuff, and there are even hidden compartments under the seats to keep an iPad or other belongings out of sight.

2022 Isuzu D-MAX X-Terrain

Smart technologies
Other smart technologies also make the ownership experience of a D-MAX X-Terrain as easy as a passenger car. For instance, you can start the engine from a distance and run the air-conditioner to cool down the interior before getting in. There’s no need to use a key to unlock or start the vehicle and it will even lock itself when you walk away. How many cars can do that?

For the driver, the experience is also not much different from driving a car. In fact, the information on the instrument panel and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are more extensive than many cars in the same price range as the D-MAX X-Terrain.

2022 Isuzu D-MAX X-Terrain

But there is one thing about driving a pick-up truck which is advantageous and which a passenger car does not have – the commanding view. With the cab being higher, the seating position is also higher which gives the driver a better view of the road ahead. And for those who are intimidated by the length, a reverse camera as well as sensors in the rear bumper (also in the front bumper) makes parking easy and you’ll be able to slot into a parking bay without sweating.

ADAS makes driving safer
Just as comfort and convenience were not important in the old pick-up trucks, safety features were basic. However, with the D-MAX X-Terrain, the Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) help the driver to avoid an accident or lessen the damaging effects of a collision. The driver’s workload is also lessened because, with Adaptive Cruise Control, the vehicle can be left to cruise at a set speed with a safe gap always maintained from the vehicle ahead. Even the headlights will switch to low beams automatically if there is a vehicle approaching.

Isuzu considers the safety of occupants equally important as those in passenger cars and has engineered the D-MAX X-Terrain to provide superior protection in the event of an accident. Apart from the tough structure, there are also various safety systems to helped the driver avoid accidents or reduce their effects. Thus, the D-MAX X-Terrain has been able to receive the maximum score of 5 stars in the ASEAN NCAP evaluation tests.

Comfortable and also powerful
The cabin may have comfortable seating but a truck is still a truck, right? It’s tall and bounces around on rough ground and the engine is noisy. That was how the old trucks were but with modern trucks like the D-MAX X-Terrain, the platform has been more carefully engineered not just for strength but also rigidity. Together with the comfort-oriented suspension, the ride quality is smooth and comfortable even when travelling over rough terrain.

2022 Isuzu D-MAX X-Terrain

With the 3-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine generating up to 190 ps of power and 450 Nm of torque, the D-MAX X-Terrain can go just about anywhere – and briskly too. Apart from the tree-stump pulling power, it can also get to speeds well beyond the highest national speed limit and if you want to avoid getting a summons, Isuzu provides a speed-limiter to keep the speed at the limit.

Carries more durians than a car
Switching from a passenger car to the D-MAX X-Terrain can change your life because it will bring a whole new lifestyle for you and your friends or family. There’s a lots of space at the back to carry all kinds of recreational gear and you can certainly carry more durians or plants with a D-MAX X-Terrain than you could with any car (even a stationwagon). And because it has truck genes, the load-carrying capacity is also higher than a passenger car’s.

2021 Isuzu D-MAX 4th Generation

Reliability and durability are a given with Isuzu vehicles and to give peace of mind to owners, Isuzu Malaysia offers a 7-year warranty with no limit on mileage. This means that the owner can enjoy the full 7 years of coverage against manufacturing defects (terms and condition apply).

The best way to discover how easy it is to switch from a passenger car to the D-MAX X-Terrain is to test-drive one at an authorized Isuzu dealership. To find one in Peninsular or East Malaysia, visit www.isuzu.net.my  and you can soon start your new trucking lifestyle.

2021 Isuzu D-MAX 4th Generation

There’s no replacement for displacement’ used to be the belief in the auto world, especially among enthusiasts as well as those who sold or used commercial vehicles. Back in the days before turbocharging was widely used, getting more power from an engine meant making it bigger. A larger displacement allowed more air and more fuel in the combustion chamber, generating more power upon combustion.

That approach remained for decades, especially in America where fuel was cheap and drivers liked lots of power and torque. For the commercial vehicle sector, big engines were a must (and still are), for the high output needed to haul heavy loads. The higher compression ratios possible, resulting in higher pressures, produce more torque. And the more torque available, the better when it comes to carrying and moving heavy loads.

ISUZU D-MAX

However, since the beginning of this century, environmental concerns have required manufacturers to address issues of fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. For petrol engines, downsizing has been a popular approach, coupled with technologies like direct injection and turbocharging which have even boosted output while making engines smaller (in displacement as well as size) and lighter.

For diesel engines, the initial solution was the introduction of commonrail fuel delivery system along with more advanced turbocharging. However, displacement remained big as there was still the matter of ‘no replacement for displacement’. While commonrail systems have raised outputs and made diesel engines more refined, large displacements have still be maintained which needed to be addressed.

Drawing on its very long experience specializing in diesel engines and developing them, Isuzu Motors naturally took on the challenge of developing a new generation of engines that would be in tune with the demands of the 21st century. Having developed a very wide range of engines with displacements of even more than 15 litres, Isuzu’s engineers had the knowledge and skills for the mission.

While the need to downsize the engines in the bigger commercial vehicles was not so urgent, there was a need to do so for the smaller range of engines used in pick-up trucks like the popular D-MAX. With pick-ups becoming increasingly used as an alternative to passenger cars for daily transportation, customers wanted more economical and efficient engines but still with the useful characteristics of the conventional turbodiesel engines.

The optimum size for today
Besides Isuzu’s original analytical technology of diesel combustion, extensive research and simulations identified 1.9 litres as the optimum size for the 4-cylinder configuration common in pick-up trucks. This was the starting point for the all-new engine which would come to be designated ‘RZ4E’. Three clear objectives were pursued: a) Best-in-Class fuel consumption; b) High reliability for long life; and c) Low noise levels. Straightforward objectives but challenging to meet and the engineers drew on new technologies to achieve them.

Downsizing the displacement would immediately result in lower weight, which is always a goal of engineers. Reducing internal friction – by as much as 37% – was also an important objective as less friction can improve power output. Computer-aided design of the pistons and combustion chambers also improved efficiency.

Along with optimised structural engineering and the use of better materials, the overall result was an engine that was not only more efficient but also surpassed the performance levels of bigger engines.

Less displacement but more output!
Compared to the 2.5-litre engine of the 4J series popularly used in the D-MAX before, the new RZ4E engine produces 110 kW of power at 3,600 rpm and 350 Nm of torque between 1,800 rpm and 2,600 rpm. These represent increases of 10% in power and 9.4% in torque – with a displacement that is 14% less. Notably, the improvement has not taken away the desirable characteristic of a diesel engine which is its flat torque curve.

Reliability is an important thing for Isuzu and is one of the reasons why its pick-up trucks are popular. Those who are in the commercial vehicle sector appreciate reliability and durability as they cannot afford to have a vehicle in the workshop frequently for repairs. The same also generally applies to any vehicle owner as everyone wants to enjoy using their vehicle as much as possible, and to keep cost of ownership low.

More reliable and durable
To improve the reliability aspects, the engineers installed Hydraulic Lash Adjusters (HLA) which automatically ensure that the valve lifters are always correctly adjusted. Likewise, the use of a serpentine belt also keeps the fanbelt correctly tensioned at all times. Incidentally, the timing chain is of steel for a long service life, another strong point of Isuzu engines.

Having a more advanced engine with higher output and higher efficiency would be wasted if that extra output could not be utilized fully. To ensure this, the engineers also developed a better transmission system with a new 6-speed manual transmission as well. The aim was to provide smoother and stronger takeoffs, especially on slopes, and this led to the development of the Vehicle Launch Assist Control. Basically, this feature manages engine output, raising torque levels at the time when the vehicle is starting off. The final gear ratio has also been revised to improve driveability and acceleration.

Tuned for Malaysian conditions
Isuzu sells its vehicles all over the world and different countries and regions have different regulations as well as fuel. To ensure that customers would be able to enjoy the maximum benefits of the new RZ4E engine, extensive testing is conducted before launch.

In the case of the Malaysian market, much of the testing focused on performance in high altitude areas and tuning the engine to run optimally on the lower quality fuel which today is Euro 2 B20 biodiesel. The studies led to the installation of a pre-fuel filter to ensure fuel cleanliness.

The attention to ensuring that the engine could meet all the conditions of the Malaysian market ensured that it could be introduced with confidence. Isuzu Malaysia would lead the market in bringing an innovative engine to Malaysian customers as no other manufacturer has offered a downsized turbodiesel engine with no compromise in performance and capabilities.

Isuzu D-MAX

Certainly, it destroys the perception that there is ‘no replacement for displacement’! And where fuel efficiency is concerned, the D-MAX with the RZ4E engine is the first pick-up truck in Malaysia to qualify as an Energy Efficient Vehicle (EEV).

Proven in the Isuzu Dura Challenge
The 2020 Isuzu Dura Challenge proved the engineering supremacy of the new RZ4E ‘Blue Power’ engine. Isuzu Malaysia loaded a 1.9-litre D-MAX to its maximum permissible capacity of a ton and took it over some of the highest accessible hills along the Titiwangsa Mountain Range in Peninsular Malaysia.

In total, the vehicle clocked over 1,000 kms, with two bars of fuel still remaining in the tank. More significantly, the D-MAX with the Blue Power turbodiesel engine never had any difficulty in the high altitudes, even with such a heavy load on board.

2020 Isuzu Dura Miles Challenge

Since its launch, the superiority of the Isuzu engine has been recognized by awards such as the Carlist ‘Diesel Engine of the Year (2019 & 2020)’ and it would certainly have been influential in the D-MAX being selected as ‘Pick-up Truck of the Year 2020′ (DSF).

The best way to experience this is to take a test-drive of the latest Isuzu D-MAX, available at any authorized Isuzu dealership nationwide. To locate a dealership, visit www.isuzu.net.my.

Although it’s been 5½ years that the Isuzu mu-X has been in Malaysia, the model has been around in other markets for 7 years. It’s long by today’s SUVs standards which are more allied with passenger car cycle times but not that long when considered in the context of pick-ups, which have generation cycles of up to 10 years.

The reason for the long cycle time for a full model change for the mu-X is because it has been linked to the D-MAX. The pick-up model had its full model change only a year ago, and Isuzu engineers were probably tied up on the program that they could only work on the new mu-X after completing the D-MAX.

2021 Isuzu mu-X

Current mu-X which was introduced in Malaysia in 2015

The mu-X has been manufactured in Thailand where Isuzu has its production hub and will go on sale in that market from next month, followed by exports to other countries.

Isuzu’s factory in Thailand is the production hub for the D-MAX and mu-X.

SUV Variant of D-MAX
As a variant of the D-MAX, the mu-X shares the same type of body-on-frame construction. While many of today’s SUVs have gone to a monocoque structure (like a passenger car’s), the body-on-frame construction is still preferred by those who will use it for more serious off-road activities. The construction method, which was used for most SUVs before, is more robust and durable, qualities which Isuzu vehicles are well known for.

2021 Isuzu mu-X

While the construction tends to be heavy, the engineers have made efforts to keep the weight down. This has been achieved by installing a plastic tailgate (which can be powered), extensive use of high-tensile steel plates and a streamlined assembly structure.

By increasing the dynamic rigidity of the cab-mount fixing portions on the chassis frame, noise levels are reduced. Additionally, foamed material is installed inside the pillars in order to reduce entry of noise and to lower vibrations felt in the cabin.

2021 Isuzu mu-X

Benefits from D-MAX advances
The new SUV benefits from the advances that were developed for the latest D-MAX. For example, the front suspension engineered in the D-MAX development provides better driving stability and riding comfort.

The level of roll rigidity has also significantly improved in the 5-link rear suspensions. This is due to the elevated roll centre achieved by relocating the lateral link. The stabilizer performance has also been enhanced by widening its effective width.

3-litre turbodiesel
For now, the new mu-X has only one powerplant shown in its specifications – the 3-litre 4JJ3 turbodiesel with an output of 190 ps/450 Nm. It will have a 6-speed automatic transmission. It is likely that Isuzu will also offer the 1.9-litre Blue Power turbodiesel which is available for the D-MAX.

Latest Isuzu 4JJ3 engine

Isuzu BluePower engine
Isuzu Blue Power 1.9-litre engine already available in the latest D-MAX.

Less conservative style
The exterior styling of the new mu-X is quite a change from its predecessor with a less conservative appearance. It comes with sharp-looking Bi-LED projector headlamps which flank the front grille that is detail-oriented with a formative design.

Being a variant of the D-MAX means that the cabin has also to be similar in some respects although the 4.85-metre long body can accommodate three rows of seats too. Fortunately, even pick-ups these days have a passenger car-like interior and for the new mu-X, there’s an upgrading of materials and overall quality. New features include an electric parking brake with better connectivity available.

Coming to Malaysia?
The mu-X, unlike the D-MAX which is assembled in Pahang, has been imported as a CBU model from Thailand. Its introduction in Malaysia was late but for the new model, perhaps the Malaysian version is already included in the export plan so we could see it by 2021. Recalling how the current model proved to be a good all-rounder, the new one should be even better as the new D-MAX is.

In a move to help its customers in these challenging times, Isuzu Malaysia is having Deferred Instalment Campaign where repayment of instalments under a Hire-Purchase (H-P) loan can start three or six months after the vehicle has been delivered.

The Isuzu Deferment Instalment Campaign is the first of its kind in the pick-up segment in Malaysia and will be available to customers purchasing new vehicles until August 31, 2020.

Explaining the objective of this campaign, Isuzu Malaysia’s Chief Operating Officer (Light Commercial Vehicle Division), Masayuki Suzuki, said it is to help Malaysians move forward during this recovery period. “A capable, dependable and frugal vehicle is a valuable asset today and a good pick-up truck makes economic sense be it for individuals or organizations. By providing this moratorium, customers can fortify their earnings by putting their brand new Isuzu D-MAX pick-up trucks to work during the deferment period before needing to worry about loan repayments,” said Mr Suzuki.

Up to 90% margin of financing for 84 months
The campaign, in collaboration with Public Bank Berhad, covers almost every model in the Isuzu D-MAX range. Customers can obtain up to 90% financing margin for a maximum tenure of 84 months and the minimum loan amount to qualify for this campaign is RM20,000.00 (terms and conditions apply).

ISUZU D-MAX

There’s a wide range of variants in the locally-assembled D-Max range to meet different requirements and budgets. Having been in the market for 15 years, the D-MAX has developed an impressive reputation as one of the toughest and most frugal pick-up trucks in Malaysia. These qualities have been proven in gruelling events such as the annual Borneo Safari off-road expedition as well as long-distance economy challenges driving from Bangkok to Singapore using just one tank of fuel.

Isuzu D-MAX

Small engine displacement, big on output
The latest D-MAX comes with the advanced 1.9-litre Blue Power engine, the smallest engine capacity in the market thereby enjoying the cheapest roadtax in its segment. Even though it has a small capacity, its performance and fuel efficiency are better than the 2.5-litre engine used previously.

Recently, a D-MAX with the engine crossed four of the highest peaks in Peninsular Malaysia carrying a tonne of load, covering a distance of 1,145 kms. From its starting point at the assembly plant in Pekan, Pahang, it reached its destination with fuel to spare in the tank.

Isuzu D-MAX conquers the Borneo Safari again – this time with the Blue Power 1.9-litre engine!

COVID-19

PISTON.MY

For the last 13 consecutive years, Isuzu Malaysia has been providing the Borneo Safari (which began in 1991) with vehicles for the media and officials to use. The vehicles have been D-MAX models and not used just to ferry people to the starting and finishing locations but have actually followed the participants deep into the jungle.

And each year, along with those that survived one of the toughest and most extreme events in the region, the D-MAX would also arrive at the finish line. This fact has helped build the solid reputation of the pick-up truck as one of the toughest and most capable off-road vehicles in the annual off-road challenge.

Isuzu D-MAX 2019 Borneo Safari

New Blue Power 1.9-litre powerplant
Until this year, the vehicles supplied had big turbodiesel engines, typical for most pick-up trucks. However, with the introduction of the advanced new Blue Power 1.9-litre engine in the latest D-MAX launched this year in Malaysia, the D-MAX entered was something entirely new,  powerplant-wise. And, in fact, the vehicle that was sent to Sabah was so new it had only clocked 200 kms after leaving the Isuzu Malaysia assembly plant in Pekan, Pahang.

However, confident in its durability and capabilities, Isuzu Malaysia encouraged the media who used it to drive it as hard as necessary during the gruelling 7-day event. It impressed so much that the organiser gave a Special Award recognizing its remarkable off-roading capabilities.

The D-MAX 1.9 was virtually standard except for necessary protective additions and in fact, it was not even fully run-in at the start of the event.

Virtually standard with 200 kms on the clock
Nicknamed the ‘Blue Monster’, the vehicle was virtually stock standard except for a few additions to make it more suited to the terrain including a body lift to fit the mud terrain tyres, long travel shock absorbers, snorkel, winch and heavy-duty guards to protect the vehicle from the extreme elements encountered along the way.

The ‘Blue Monster’ joined ‘Red Monster’, ‘White Monster’ and ‘Black Monster’ as part of Isuzu Malaysia’s commitment as the event’s Diamond Sponsor.

“Off-road enthusiasts understand that strong and balanced power delivery is vital when tackling extremes in the jungle. With its impressive power delivery perfectly matched to its new 6-speed gearbox, the new 1.9-litre Blue Power D-MAX simply showed its pedigree and dispelled any notion about the capability of its diminutive engine displacement,” said the Chief Operating Officer of Isuzu Malaysia, Masayuki Suzuki.

Malaysia just witnessed the launch of the new 2019 Isuzu D-Max and it looks like the manufacturer is getting more recognition for its versatile pick up truck. This time, it’s in the UK where it was awarded its second consecutive award for the ‘Pick Up of the Year’ at the Commercial Fleet Awards. (more…)

It used to be that pick-up trucks would have a model cycle of at least 10 years – double that of passenger cars. And during that considerable length of time in the market, distributors would have to sustain interest by having limited editions periodically to refresh the looks, besides adding extra features. Today, though, competition is tough and 10 years is a bit long so Isuzu Motors has come out with an all-new generation of its popular D-MAX truck after 8 years.

To go on sale from October 19, the new D-MAX has received extensive change guided by the development concept of ‘Efficient and Robust’. This development concept was formulated to offer a vehicle that delivers higher fuel efficiency and safety while responding to various usage conditions and purposes in over 100 countries where the 1-ton truck is sold.

Isuzu D-MAX Gen3

Versatility has made it very popular
The D-MAX has been especially popular in Thailand, where Isuzu has its global production hub (which supplies CKD kits to its subsidiary plant in Pekan, Malaysia, for local assembly). The popularity has been due to not only being suitable for personal use but also for business use. The durability of the powertrain has also been a strong factor in making Isuzu a top brand in Thailand.

It’s hard for a truck to look significantly different but Isuzu’s designers have given the new model a more distinctive look with a larger grille that is orientated more vertically. Aiming to present the new D-MAX as ‘Bold, Emotional and Smart’, the designers have given the chunky exterior profile with a wedge body shape a more powerful, swishing silhouette than ever before. A neatly integrated step bumper is mounted on the rear, giving an all-new, sophisticated look.

Isuzu D-MAX Gen3

In the headlamps, bi-led projectors combined with stylish signature lamps are installed giving an eager, intense look. At the rear, the lamps have dual LED edge lights. Together, these new light designs contribute to a unique, stylish appearance front and rear.

Lean, rational assembly structure and extensive use of high-tensile steel plates have moderated the overall vehicle weight but the bodywork is still tough and rigidity is 20% greater. Taking note of the need to resist corrosion as the vehicle is used in wet conditions in markets like Thailand, anti-corrosion ability is said to be greatly improved. The new D-MAX can cross a river that is 800 mm deep as well. Moreover, it’s designed in such a way that its electrical architecture flexibly accommodates evolution in security and connected technologies.

Interior with ‘first-class appearance’
The revised dashboard has a 9-inch display  mounted in the centre of a horizontally-flowing form with sharp and rich surface textures. The interior has a ‘first-class appearance’ with the introduction of a floor console which is now taller and wider. Also, it is designed to enfold the driver and passenger as if they were in a cockpit of an airplane. Low-rebound MDI polyurethane is used for front seat cushions to reduce fatigue that long-distance drivers have to endure.

Isuzu D-MAX Gen3

The design of a rear seat in the crew cab is optimized to improve ride comfort. To allow for easy getting in/out, an opening of the B-pillar is shifted forward and assist grip is added.

Detailed attention is paid to its interior components having embossed and texturized surfaces to achieve a high-end, sporty look. For the workhorse applications, there’s a simple and practically designed instrument panel and durable door trim.

Low fuel consumption and CO2 emissions
Isuzu has specialised in diesel engines for decades and for the new D-MAX, there’s a newly developed 4JJ3 engine (based on the reliable 3-litre 4JJ1 diesel engine). The combined effects of 250 MPa high injection pressure, electronically-controlled VSG turbocharger, heat-insulating coating on the piston, double-scissors gear, etc. has yielded the engine featuring high power, low fuel consumption and low noise. The 1.9-litre RZ4E engine (recently introduced in Malaysia) has received some enhancements.

A pull-ring shift lever is used for the manual transmission to make it easier for the driver to reverse the vehicle, and drive feel is better and more engaging. As for the automatic transmission developed for RZ4E engine, a downsized torque converter and lock-up clutch integrated with a wide-angle damper provide improvements in fuel consumption and response.

A single propeller shaft made of aluminium is now installed, giving a significant weight reduction. There’s also an electromagnetic rear differential lock to use in difficult conditions. With an enhanced transfer of power to the wheels, Isuzu says it now takes shorter time to switch between 2-wheel drive and 4-wheel drive as well as between High and Low ranges.

The new D-MAX’s front hub bearing is now maintenance-free as it is part of unit bearing. Maintenance schedules for other items are extended, and the maintenance frequency and costs are greatly reduced (depending on the market).

Better protection for occupants with up to 6 airbags, and active safety systems like Blind Spot Monitoring (below).

EE Architecture for new CASE era
The EE architecture is configured using the central gateway in order to pave the way to the new CASE era. Technologies designed to optimize convenience and comfort are extensively employed such as keyless entry, infotainment, lights, wipers, etc.

The new generation of the D-MAX will most likely be available in Malaysia some time next year. Because Isuzu assembles the model locally, some time is needed to prepare for assembly and also to coordinate with local parts suppliers.
