Mercedes-Benz is revolutionising the way their customers fuel up in Germany by introducing a seamless and secure payment system directly from their cars using their fingerprints. This innovation is facilitated through the native in-car payment service, Mercedes pay+. The biometric two-factor authentication is made possible by a fingerprint sensor integrated into the MBUX infotainment system.

When a driver arrives at a connected service station and turns off the engine, the Mercedes me Fuel & Pay service automatically initiates on the MBUX infotainment system. The driver can then select the desired gas pump. Even before refueling, the system calculates the maximum total amount based on the current fuel price and the estimated fuel required to fill the tank.

In this advanced system, drivers no longer need to authorize payments via their mobile devices. Instead, they complete transactions seamlessly through fingerprint authentication. After refueling, the MBUX display shows the amount of fuel added and the invoice amount. Payment is processed automatically, allowing the driver to leave the gas station without visiting the checkout area. The invoice is later sent to the customer via email.

When introducing a new model, car companies often mention how it was designed from ‘the inside out’. Now the Mercedes-Benz PR people are also taking that approach in introducing the next generation of one of their core models, the E-Class. The first official pictures and details of the new W 214 series, to be launched later in the year, are not of the exterior but the inside.

In particular, Mercedes-Benz is providing a preview of the cabin appearance and all the digital innovations customers can expect. The electronic architecture is more software-driven and less hardware-driven, which allows for more individual updating of the interior systems in the future.

The fifth generation of what was once the entry-level model of Mercedes-Benz (until the A-Class came along) has made its debut in Malaysia. It’s the new C-Class (W206) is initially being imported as a CBU (completely built-up) import with locally-assembled versions coming from the plant in Pahang later in the year.

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia offers two variants of the best-selling Mercedes-Benz model of the last 10 years – the C 200 Avantgarde Line priced from RM288,334 and C 300 AMG Line priced from RM330, 681. The prices exclude insurance premiums and 50% of the sales tax applicable. While the locally-assembled versions will have lower prices, they will likely not enjoy full sales tax exemption if the government does not extend the provision past June 30, 2022.

‘Baby S-Class’
Presented as a ‘baby S-Class’, the new C-Class takes many styling elements – outside as well as inside – and technology from the brand’s flagship model which was launched in Malaysia last December. It retains the sporty profile with a short front overhang, long wheelbase and rear overhang and ‘cab-backward’ design. Though the top of the engine is flat, there are ‘power domes’ on the bonnet which complement the performance image and provide an impression of forward motion.

The brand’s hallmark radiator grille has the same layout for both variants but differs in details. With the C 200 having Avantgarde line trim, the highlights are in the form of elegant vertical trim strips in high-sheen aluminium and chrome. For the C 300 which has AMG Line trim, the Mercedes-Benz pattern grille has star designs in chrome.

The headlight shapes on the new model have a similarity with those on the S-Class but do not have the advanced DIGITAL LIGHT system. Nevertheless, they are still LED high-performance units with adaptive capability to maximise the lighting distance, rather than just automatically switching between high and low beams when other vehicles approach. The rear units also use LEDs for reduced energy consumption and longer life.

The wheels also differ in size, with the C 200 having an 18-inch size and 5 spokes while the C 300 is fitted with 19-inch AMG multi-spoke wheels. While the C 200 comes with run-flat tyres as standard, the C 300 does not and owners instead get a TIREFIT kit. This kit comes with a sealant to seal punctures of up to 4 mm and there is also an inflator powered from the 12V cigarette lighter socket. As with run-flat tyres, Mercedes-Benz advises drivers to travel at not more than 80 km/h when the tyre is repaired, and the sealant should be replaced with a new bottle after 4 years.

The rear-end design will immediately identify the new model as a Mercedes-Benz sedan with its familiar form. The tail lamps, for the first time, have a 2-piece design, with the light functions divided between the side and boot lid elements which curve around the corners. Attention to detail, like on the front units. can be seen in the silver-grey diamond-pattern trim.

Slightly longer body
Compared to the previous generation, the new C-Class has grown in overall length with an increase of 65 mm, while the wheelbase has gained 25 mm. However, the body width is almost the same as before, with just a 10 mm difference and the roofline is 9 mm closer to the road. Out of curiosity, we looked at the dimensions of the original ‘baby Benz’ – the W201 190 of 1982 – and it has an overall length of 4420 mm which is 331 mm shorter, and a wheelbase of 2665 mm, which was 200 mm less. It was also much narrower – 1678 mm versus 1820 mm for the latest model.

While Mercedes-Benz is among the carmakers at the forefront of electrification of products, it is also doing so with a ‘needs-based’ approach that will take into account the fact that different markets will require different levels of electrification in cars. Not all will be able to make the immediate jump to full electrification for some time to come. With the C-Class being sold so widely, its powertrains have to be suited to such conditions with some degree of electrification.

Mild hybrid powertrains
The new C-Class engines now have an integrated starter-generator (ISG) for intelligent assistance at low engine speeds as a mild hybrid of the second generation. The ISG uses a 48-volt on-board electrical system that ensures functions such as gliding, boosting or energy recovery, and makes significant fuel savings possible. The engines also start very rapidly and comfortably as a result, so that the start/stop function is almost as imperceptible to the driver as the transition from gliding with the engine switched off to strong acceleration under engine power.

With the second-generation starter-generator, the engine gets additional output of up to 15 kW and 200 Nm more torque. A completely new feature is the segment charger with flow connection, an advancement of the twin-scroll technology for even more instantaneous response of the forced induction system. The technology for this new turbocharger comes from the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula 1 team, showing how motorsport can benefit production cars.

The output from the C 200 engine with a 1.5-litre displacement is 204 ps/300 Nm while the C 300, which has a 2-litre displacement, produces 258 ps/400 Nm. For short periods, the output of the C 300 can additionally be increased by up to 20 kW (27 ps) with overboost.

The 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission has been adapted for optimum performance with the ISG, and is installed in both variants. It uses a new generation of the fully integrated transmission control with multi-core processor and new design and connectivity technology. In addition to the increased computing power, the number of electric interfaces has been significantly reduced, and the weight of the transmission controls have been cut by 30% compared with the predecessor.

The key components of the new, dynamically configured suspension are a new 4-link axle at the front and a multi-link axle at the rear mounted to a subframe. For the Malaysian market, both variants come with AGILITY CONTROL suspension with a selective damping system.

More space for rear occupants
The interior designers have used the extra length of the new body to provide additional space for the occupants at the rear. The layout of the dashboard follows the common theme of the more rennet models with a standalone 11.9-inch touchscreen display panel at the centre and a slim 12.3-inch screen that shows the instruments and driving information. The dashboard is divided into an upper and a lower section, with new, flattened round vents reminiscent of aircraft engine nacelles.

The portrait orientation of the centre display is said to be advantageous for navigation and includes a fingerprint scanner to quickly and conveniently identify the owner (or designated user). This keeps personal data such as profiles or other information protected. The fingerprint scanner is located in a convenient location below the central display. As part of a one-time process, it records the distinctive biometric features of up to two random fingers per user. Therefore no one is able to observe a number combination, which could happen with PIN entry.

The instrument panel display can be individualized with three styles (Discreet, Sporty, and Classic) and three modes (Navigation, Assistance, Service). In ‘Sporty’, for example, red is the predominant colour and the tachometer has a dynamic design. Selection is easy with controls on the steering wheel. The new display aesthetic was developed for the S-Class and is now adapted for other models like the new C-Class.

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia has also included Augmented Video as standard equipment in the new  C-Class. Using a camera which registers the surroundings in front of the vehicle, moving images are shown on the central display. In addition, virtual objects, information and markers are superimposed on the video image. These include directional arrows, lane-change recommendations and more. This can make navigation much easier, especially in urban areas.

The modern, highly reduced design of door panels frames both ends of the dashboard. The door centre panel with an integrated armrest evolves from a vertical surface into a horizontal orientation. Reflecting the design of the centre console, the front section takes the form of a metallic high-tech element. It can be used as a grab or closing handle, and houses the power window controls. Another highlight is the floating control cluster, into which the door opener and seat adjustment controls are integrated.

The design of seats (Comfort for the C 200 and Sports for the C 300) are worth mentioning as well. They have layers and enveloping surfaces to create a visual impression of lightness. The head restraints are also a completely new design and are attached to the backrest with a sealed piece of trim under which the adjustment mechanism is located.

More intelligent 2nd generation MBUX
With every new Mercedes-Benz model, the MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) interface is highlighted and for the new C-Class, this is a second generation system. The hardware and software have been advanced, while the voice assistant ‘Hey Mercedes’ is more interactive and has learning capabilities. In some cases, it does not need the activation keywords and can explains vehicle functions as well. So for those who never bother to read the Owner’s Manual (and many people don’t), the information can be obtained just by asking the on-board ‘assistant’.

With the Spotify and Apple Music services, Mercedes-Benz has now fully integrated the major music streaming services into the MBUX infotainment system. MBUX enables seamless access to the personal user profile at the linked music provider. This gives owners convenient access to a huge library of songs and curated playlists.

Though in the lower rungs of the Mercedes-Benz range, the C-Class still gets safety systems that are fairly advanced in the Driving Assistance Package. Besides helping the driver avoid an accident or reduce its damaging effects, the systems can also reduce driver workload in daily driving. A less tired driver will be more alert, reducing the risk of an accident.

For the latest C-Class, the usual active systems are present and work in an integrated manner using data and imagery from a camera and radar. Some systems will provide alerts while others will automatically brake the car if the driver does not act correctly to prevent a collision.

As with other Mercedes-Benz models for many years now, the C-Class can also park by itself with the driver only controlling the engine power. This is done by Active Parking Assist with PARKTRONIC and only works with parallel parking.

The C-Class success story began in 1982 with the W201 and being the smallest model in the Mercedes-Benz range, it was referred to as the ‘Baby Benz’. Prior to 1993, it was designated as the 190 model with various engine sizes, including a powerful 2.5-litre 16-valve unit. From 1993 onwards, it became the C-Class in line with the brand’s new model designations. In the last decade, the C-Class has been the highest-volume Mercedes-Benz model sold, with over 10.5 million cars delivered worldwide.

Following the introduction of the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W223) last December, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia can now provide the price of the model. Only one version is available – the S 580 e Plug-In Hybrid – and it is priced at RM698,744 (excluding insurance), As it is assembled locally at the company’s facility in Pekan, Pahang, it can have full exemption of sales tax until June 30, 2022, which would be big savings for customers.

The flagship of the Mercedes-Benz range has been on sale in Malaysia since the 1970s, with over 18,000 cars sold to date, almost all assembled locally. The model’s history goes back to the W180 of 1954 although it was only in 1972 that it came to be known as the ‘S-Class’. Globally, more than 4 million units have been sold since the early 1970s.

The W223 is the seventh generation and as with every generation before, the new S-Class brings with it advanced technologies. In fact, this model has often introduced many new technologies, especially in the area of safety, that it shows ‘the future of motoring’. For example, in 1980, the W126 generation was the first production car in the world to be equipped with an airbag system.

With Mercedes-Benz now putting its full commitment to electrification during this decade, the S-Class also leads the way and for the Malaysian-assembled model, a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain is the only one offered. Hybrid powertrains are not new to Mercedes-Benz in Malaysia and have been available with some models (including the S-Class) over the past 8 years.

For the latest S-Class, the model is designated S 580 e but its engine not 5.8 litres. It is actually an in-line 6-cylinder petrol engine of 3 litres and works with an electric motor which generates 110 kW with 440 Nm. The engine’s output is 367 bhp/270 kW with 500 Nm of torque and the combined output can propel the S 580e from 0 to 100 km/h in a claimed 5.2 seconds and up to a top speed of 250 km/h.

If conditions permit, it is possible to run only on electricity for up to 100 kms. When the lithium-ion battery is empty, ‘refuelling’ will take up to 2.5 hours, depending on the charging method. One concern owners have is the cost of the battery pack if it needs to be replaced as it is pretty expensive. But for the first 8 years or a maximum of 100,000 kms, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia will provide warranty coverage which should offer some peace of mind.

Showcase for new technologies
New for this S-Class is DIGITAL LIGHT, which offers significantly better illumination from the  headlamps. Each light module has 3 extremely powerful LEDs with light that is refracted and directed by 1.3 million micro-mirrors. The resolution is therefore more than 2.6 million pixels per vehicle, allowing highly precise light distribution.

The millions of pixels allow the lighting pattern to be precisely shaped so that maximum illumination levels can be provided without blinding oncoming drivers. Light/shadow graduations and the light distribution of all the other adaptive light functions are also realised with considerably more precision, optimising illumination in all ambient lighting conditions.

Aerodynamic efficiency has always been important for cars as lower wind resistance of the shape means more power can be used to move the car, and fuel consumption can be lower. Low wind resistance is even more vital for hybrid and electric vehicles so extensive wind tunnel research was done and the result is a body that has a Cd of 0.22, impressive considering its size.

Not visible are improvements in aeroacoustics; the new model’s quietness is said to be even better than the e previous generation which already excelled with a very high level of interior noise comfort. The high rigidity of the bodyshell provides the basis for this achievement, and is enhanced with fine-tuning.

Lounge-like interior
These days, car interiors are designed to be like lounges and not just seating spaces inside a cabin. Especially with a model like the S-Class, comfort and spaciousness are high on the list of expectations. With the new generation, the interior has fully evolved into a ‘third place’ for the occupants, between the home and workplace. So it has to be able to provide not just comfort but also be functional enough for those who want to get some work done while on the move.

The seats qualify as technological benchmarks for long-distance comfort. The complex technology inside each seat uses multiple motors for adjustments in the tiniest dimension. The flowing, 3-dimensional layer design theme gives an impression of lightness with its nappa leather upholstery. The adjustment range and angle of the front passenger seat in the chauffeur configuration and the reclining seat behind it have been improved as well.

MBUX – the Mercedes-Benz User Experience – is a big thing for the brand and has appeared in every new model since the current A-Class was launched in 2018. Since then, it has continued to evolve and gain more sophistication, with the second generation of this learn-capable system making its debut in the new S-Class.

The possibilities for personalization and intuitive operation have become far more extensive, especially in the rear. Both the hardware and software have made great advancements with brilliant displays on up to 5 large screens (in part with OLED technology). The new 3D driver display allows a spatial view at the touch of a button for the first time – a real 3-dimensional effect without having to wear 3D glasses.

The voice assistant ‘Hey Mercedes’ is constantly learning, by activation of online services in the Mercedes me App. Moreover, certain actions (like accepting a call) can be performed even without using ‘Hey Mercedes’  which, incidentally, can also be activated from the rear.

With digital and graphic displays nowadays, it’s possible to have multiple displays and not end up like the cockpit of a 1970s fighter jet. The screens can be individualized with a choice of 4 display styles and three modes (Navigation, Assistance, Service), so the driver can choose whatever information is most important to him or her when driving. Furthermore, this new version of MBUX uses 27 fewer buttons and switches, underscoring the minimalist appearance of the interior.

Rear airbag – world first
As mentioned earlier, an earlier S-Class was the first production car in the world to be fitted with an airbag. This pioneering position in safety continues with the latest generation and is demonstrated by having the world’s first rear airbags. These are integrated into the backrests of the front seats and deploy in a severe front impact. They deploy gently and protect strapped-in outer rear seat passengers against contact with the front seats.

Mercedes-Benz is steadily building up its Mercedes-EQ range of all-electric models and just a few months after the launch of the EQS flagship comes a smaller version – the EQE. As the last alphabet suggests, this would be positioned in the same way as the successful E-Class as a business sedan. It will be produced at factories in Germany as well as China (at a joint venture facility for that market only).

Compared to the EQS, the EQE has a more streamlined shape with a slightly shorter wheelbase, shorter overhangs and more recessed flanks to give a sportier image. The Sensual Purity design language is reflected in generously modelled surfaces, reduced joints and seamless transitions. Besides the pronounced muscular shoulder section, the rear gets a dynamic accent with a sharp rear spoiler to give an athletic character.

The overall body dimensions  are comparable to those of the CLS but thanks to the EVA2 architecture that is dedicated to electric vehicles, the cabin space is more generous than the E-Class (W213 model) with 80 mm more length.

Unconventional interior design
With the optionally available MBUX Hyperscreen, the entire instrument panel is a single widescreen. This determines the aesthetics of the entire cockpit and interior. The high-resolution screens merge seemingly seamlessly under the shared glass cover, integrated into the instrument panel in minimalist fashion.

The 12.3-inch OLED display for the front passenger provides a personal display and control area. On it, the passenger can watch videos, TV or even wander around the internet. As a safety measure in some markets, an intelligent, camera-based blocking logic can be included. If the camera detects that the driver is looking at the front passenger display, the display will be automatically dimmed for certain content.

The vent band spans across the entire width at the top and is very slim at the same time. These extreme proportions, together with the glass wave of the MBUX Hyperscreen, create the avant-garde architecture of the cockpit. The outer nozzles feature a turbine design. They play on the theme hyperanalogue through the contrast between high-tech precision mechanics and digital, glass display world.

‘Zero-level’ design for MBUX
The EQE has the latest MBUX generation, introduced with the EQS. With adaptive software, the control and display concept completely adapts to its user and makes personalised suggestions for numerous infotainment, comfort and vehicle functions. Unlike the early systems with many layers in the menus, MBUX has a ‘zero-layer’ design so the user does not have to scroll through submenus or give voice commands. The most important applications are offered situationally and contextually on the top level in the field of view. In this way, the EQE driver is relieved of certain operating steps and can focus more on driving.

The EQE will come with the Electric Art interior ex-factory. Wraparound surfaces in the side bolsters of the seats enhance body support and stand in stark contrast to the seat centre panel which has a sophisticated seam pattern similar to a fan palm.

If the AMG Line interior is specified, there will be sports seats. These are characterised by a slim and monolithic shape and act like integral seats. The seat surfaces are designed in such a way that they give the impression of draped-on leather covers, a technical term known as ‘layering’.

Two models initially
The EQE 350 with 215 kW plus a second model will be the initial offering. All EQE models have an electric drivetrain (eATS) on the rear axle. The later performance versions (with around 500 kW) with all-wheel drive 4MATIC will also be equipped with an eATS at the front axle. The lithium-ion battery pack consists of 10 modules and has a usable energy content of 90 kWh. The innovative battery management software, developed in-house, allows updates over the air so that energy management remains optimised throughout the life cycle.

To avoid electric shocks and short circuits, Mercedes-Benz engineers developed a multi-stage high-voltage (HV) safety concept comprising 7 key elements. Alongside the battery, part of the high-voltage system includes all components with a voltage level higher than 48V. The protection concept provides a high degree of safety when driving, both during and after a crash. All HV components are protected with to the IP 6K9K class, which means that they are completely sealed against dust as well as protected against water when cleaned with high pressure/steam jets.

Special seals help to protect the HV components against water penetration. In flood situations, the components may be switched off by appropriate over-current protection measures, such as fuses. An electrical hazard can be ruled out as the HV voltages do not become accessible to the user despite water penetration and the HV system is deactivated immediately.

Integral Safety for all models
The principles of Integral Safety, in particular accident safety, apply regardless of the platform. Like all other Mercedes-Benz models, the EQE therefore has a rigid passenger cell, special deformation zones and modern restraint systems. With its new architecture for EVs, new possibilities for the safety concept were available. For example, a favourable location could be chosen for the installation of the battery, in a crash-protected area in the underbody. Because there is no large crankcase in the engine, the behaviour in a frontal crash could also be modelled even better. Internally the new body structure bears the designation ‘flat-floor concept’.

The all-electric future of Mercedes-Benz

Final testing of the eighth generation of the SL model line of Mercedes-Benz is now being carried out and the new roadster, to be marketed under the Mercedes-AMG brand will be launched later this year. While full details of the new car are not being revealed, pre-production units must be on the assembly line and Mercedes-AMG can’t wait to show off the new interior.

The first 300 SL Roadster, launched 69 years ago, had a minimalist and high-quality interior and the designers of its 21st century descendant have drawn inspiration from it. The interior design of the upcoming SL transforms the iconic tradition of the first Roadster into the modern era with a mix of analogue geometry and digital world – called ‘hyperanalogue’.

The cockpit design, right down to the adjustable central display in the centre console, is focused on the driver, as every genuine sportscar is. Its dimensional concept with 2+2 seats offers more function and space in the interior at the same time.

“The interior of the new Mercedes-AMG SL pampers driver and passengers with sophisticated luxury. The new SL combines the highest levels of comfort and quality in its interior, coupled with just the right amount of sportiness. The high-quality combination of analogue world and state-of-the-art digital equipment makes one thing clear: the new SL is the rebirth of an icon for the modern era,” said Philipp Schiemer, Chairman of the Board of Management at Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

Describing the new car as ‘the most iconic SL ever’, Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer of the Daimler Group, said it was a great opportunity and challenge for design because every designer wants to create icons.

The new and sophisticated dimensional concept once again allows a 2+2 seating configuration for the first time since the R129 SL generation of 1989. The added versatility allows for either additional persons on board, or the second row of seats can be used as additional storage space to accommodate luggage.

Aviation-inspired instrument panel
The symmetrical instrument panel is designed as a sculptural, powerful wing and structured into an upper and lower section. There are four galvanised turbine nozzles which merge into the instrument panel in the form of powerful power domes (with the frontal view resembling the face ‘Jar Jar Binks’, the character in ‘Star Wars’, observed one of our readers). The lower section of the instrument panel evolves fluidly from the centre console, seamlessly connecting the two elements.

Despite symmetry, the cockpit design creates a clear focus on the driver. The instrument panel’s high-resolution 12.3-inch LCD screen is not designed to be free-standing but is integrated into a high-tech visor. This prevents reflections caused by sunlight, a problem in some cars which can be irritating to the driver.

Adjustable touchscreen
The centre console dominates the space between the driver and front passenger. Rising sharply towards the front, it flows into the lower section of the instrument panel. The functional and visual centre of the centre console is the metallic panel that breaks through the leather surfaces at the front and rear.

Featuring the NACA air intake signature, it carries on the genes of the AMG GT and GT 4-Door Coupe. This design element thus becomes a hallmark AMG stylistic element in the interior. The NACA air intake transitions almost seamlessly into the tablet-like 11.9-inch multimedia touchscreen in portrait format. To avoid reflections caused by sunlight when driving with the top down, this screen can be adjusted electrically into a more vertical position, when necessary. Its portrait format offers clear advantages, especially for navigation, as well as more space ergonomically.

Integrated door panel design
Similar to the centre console, the surfaces in the doors also radiate fluidly from the instrument panel. The result is a gradient accentuated with decorative topstitching that frames the entire interior and runs past the turbine nozzles at the sides. The centre of the door is designed as a sensual layered topography.

The pull handle is also designed in the same way as the centre console and is another eye-catching feature. The materiality and modelling of the surfaces are repeated in the doors, creating balance in the interior. High-quality Burmester loudspeakers in real metal, whose perforation pattern also stands out visually, are integrated into the doors.

Sculptural seat design
The avantgarde seat of the new SL has a sculptural design in a sporty way with layers and enveloping surfaces. This makes the seats appear lighter and less voluminous. The headrests are integrated into the backrest and contribute to the sporty proportions of the seat, completing the symbiosis of high-tech, performance and luxury.

Latest MBUX system
As with every Mercedes-Benz and Mercedes-AMG sold today, the car will have the intelligent system known as the Mercedes-Benz User Experience, or MBUX. It is a second-generation system and some functional content and the operating structure correspond to those of the S-Class. They have been extensively supplemented or replaced by AMG-specific content and views. This makes the new SL highly independent in terms of communication and information.

The interior has become even more digital and intelligent, as hardware and software have been extensively enhanced. Brilliant images on the LCD screens make it easy to control vehicle and comfort functions. The appearance of the instrument cluster can be personalised with different display styles and individually selectable main views. Customers can also order the car with a head-up display as well.

Electrification of product lines has picked up speed in recent years, partly because of tougher regulations in Europe. With the future clearly being electric, many companies are preparing their future zero emission product ranges to cover as many segments as possible, from bottom to top. Even Rolls-Royce and Bentley have plans to offer all-electric models eventually and are certainly developing them now.

But Mercedes-EQ (the EV brand for Mercedes-Benz) is ready with its luxury limousine that runs only on electricity with a flagship model designated the EQS. This  is the first model to be based on the modular architecture for luxury and executive-class electric vehicles and will initially be available in two variants – EQS 450+ and EQS 580 4MATIC. These will be the S-Class of the electric range, the beginning of a carbon-neutral new car fleet that will be completed over the coming 20 years.

With the need for minimum air resistance to overcome, it’s not surprising that the designers have brought the CD value down to 0.202, even with a large form that the EQS has. It’s the most aerodynamic production car in the world now, and this superior efficiency benefits many aspects – operating range, quietness and stability at high speeds.

Related to S-Class but different too
Although the EQS is a close relative of the new S-Class, it is built on an all-electric architecture. This completely new concept made a rigorous Purpose Design possible: with its one-bow lines and cab-forward design with fastback, the EQS is clearly distinguishable from vehicles with combustion engines even at first glance. The design philosophy employs generously sculpted surfaces, reduced joints and seamless transitions between surfaces.

The front is combined into a ‘Black Panel’ unit with innovative headlights connected by a light band and the deep black radiator grille (Black Panel) to form the distinctive ‘face’. The exclusive look of the Black Panel radiator grille with central Mercedes star can be enhanced still further: as an optional extra they are also available with a three-dimensional star pattern. The design picks up on the original star of the Daimler-Motorengesellschaft company, which was registered as a trademark in 1911.

770 kms range, up to 560 kW of power
Being an EV, much interest will naturally be on the powertrain. With claimed ranges up to 770 kms and an output of up to 385 kW (524 ps), the powertrain of the EQS provides appropriate performance levels that would be expected of a model as the same level as the S-Class. A performance version with up to 560 kW (762 ps) is being planned. Torque levels are 568 Nm and 855 Nm and peak torque can be expected from takeoff, as is the characteristic of electric motors. All EQS models will have an electric powertrain (eATS) at the rear axle, while the versions with 4MATIC also have an eATS at the front axle.

The EQS marks the launch of a new generation of batteries with significantly higher energy density. The larger of the two batteries has a usable energy content of 107.8 kWh. Recharging with a power supply of up to 200 kW at fast charging stations with direct current can provide 300 kms of range within 15 minutes. At home or at public charging stations, the EQS can be charged with up to 22 kW AC using the on-board charger.

Having dedicated architecture has enabled the interior designers to package the cabin with new approaches that are not constrained by traditional structures used for models with combustion engines. The advanced appearance has the MBUX Hyperscreen as the absolute highlight in the interior. This large, curved screen unit sweeps almost from A-pillar to A-pillar, with three screens under a cover glass appearing to merge into one.

With adaptive software, MBUX adapts completely to its user and makes personalized suggestions for numerous infotainment, comfort and vehicle functions. With the zero layer, the most important applications are always offered on the top level within the field of vision, according to situation and context.

A new feature of the EQS is a visualization in the MBUX showing whether the available battery capacity is sufficient to return to the starting point without charging. Charging stations along the route that have been added manually are given preference in the route calculation. Proposed charging stations can be excluded. The estimated charging costs per charging stop are calculated.

Navigation with Electric Intelligence plans the fastest and most convenient route, including charging stops, based on numerous factors and reacts dynamically to traffic jams or a change in driving style, for example.

Over-The-Air updates
The EQS is the first Mercedes to offer the option of activating completely new vehicle functions via over-the- air updates (OTA) in many functional areas. Available from launch will be two special driving programs for young drivers and service staff, some little games and the demo program ‘The Best or Nothing’.

This means that, following the purchase and the initial new-car configuration, some of the features of the EQS can be adapted according to personal preferences. It will also be possible to unlock the rear axle steering with the larger steering angle of ten degrees. In addition to the classic purchase of individual functions, subscriptions, temporary activations and free test phases are also planned.

Exceptionally intelligent car
As an exceptionally intelligent car, the EQS has up to 350 sensors, depending on the equipment installed. These record distances, speeds and accelerations, lighting conditions, precipitation and temperatures, seat occupancy as well as the driver’s blink of an eye or the passengers’ speech. This wealth of information is processed by control units that, controlled by algorithms, make decisions at lightning speed. So they are the ‘brain’, so to speak. The new EQS can expand its capabilities based on new experiences, because it is highly capable of learning thanks to artificial intelligence (AI).

The sensors also monitor the vehicle’s surroundings, with parking systems can help the driver with maneuvering in many areas. The driver can park and unpark the car via smartphone using Remote Parking Assist. With the pre-installation for the INTELLIGENT PARK PILOT, the EQS is prepared for Automated Valet Parking (AVP, SAE level 4).

With the optional DRIVE PILOT, the EQS will be able to drive in conditionally automated mode at up to 60 km/h where traffic density is high or in tailbacks on suitable motorway sections, initially in Germany. By relieving the pressure on the driver, the system enables him or her to undertake secondary activities1 such as browsing on the internet or dealing with emails in the In-Car Office, and so gain extra time.

Mercedes-Benz EQC goes into production – First all-electric Mercedes

The EQ range of Mercedes-Benz cars is not just about a new range of all-electric vehicles but will also bring much new and more advanced technologies, especially since the platforms can be entirely new and not adapted from conventional vehicles with internal combustion engines. This gives designers and engineers a truly ‘clean sheet’ or perhaps ‘hard disk’ from which to develop new models.

A new technology which will be one of the major highlights for the EQS flagship model is the new MBUX Hyperscreen, a visually impressive display panel which extends almost the entire width of the interior. In addition to its sheer size, the large, curved screen panel, running from the left to the right A-pillar, guarantees a ‘wow’ effect.

Adaptable to users
Artificial intelligence (AI) and learn-capable software enables the control and display concept to adapt to its user and make personalized suggestions for a variety of functions from infotainment, to comfort and even vehicle functions. 8 CPU cores, 24-gigabyte RAM and 46.4GB per second RAM memory bandwidth are some of the MBUX technical specifications.

With the new zero-layer feature, the user no longer has to scroll through sub-menus or give voice commands as the most important applications are always available in a situational and contextual way at the top of the driver’s field of vision. This alleviates the driver from needing to make numerous operating steps. The MBUX Hyperscreen not only benefits the driver as it is also an attentive assistant for the front passenger, who has their own display and operating area.

The Hyperscreen is the latest advancement of the MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) which has greatly simplified the operation of the latest Mercedes-Benz models. It was introduced with the A-Class in 2018, and there are now more than 1.8 million Mercedes-Benz passenger cars on the road equipped with MBUX worldwide. A few months ago, the second generation of this learn-capable system debuted in the new S-Class, and Mercedes is now taking another big step forward in the form of the new EQS and the optionally available MBUX Hyperscreen.

“With our MBUX Hyperscreen, a design vision becomes reality,” said Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer Daimler Group. “We merge technology with design in a fascinating way that offers the customer unprecedented ease of use. We love the simplicity we created with a new level of MBUX.”

“The MBUX Hyperscreen is both the brain and nervous system of the car,” explained Sajjad Khan, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz AG and CTO. “The MBUX Hyperscreen continually gets to know the customer better and delivers a tailored, personalized infotainment and operating offerings without the occupant needing to click or scroll anywhere.”

Surrounded by a continuous plastic front frame painted in Silver Shadow, the MBUX Hyperscreen is an example of digital/analogue design fusion. Several displays appear to blend seamlessly, resulting in an impressive, curved screen band, while analogue air vents are integrated into this large digital surface to connect the digital and physical world. The integrated ambient lighting installed in the lower part of the MBUX Hyperscreen makes the display unit appear to float on the instrument panel.

The front passenger also has a personal display and operating area to help make road trips more enjoyable and entertaining. The passenger display allows for individualized content with up to 7 profiles. If the passenger seat is not occupied, the screen becomes a digital decorative part. In this case, animated stars (ie the Mercedes-Benz pattern) are displayed.

The bright and clear display uses OLED technology for the central and front passenger sections. This technology features individual image pixels that are self-luminous; image pixels, when they are not used, remain switched off, which means that they appear deep black. The active OLED pixels radiate with a high colour brilliance, resulting in high contrast values, regardless of the angle of view and light conditions. All of the graphics are styled in a new blue/orange colour scheme throughout. The classic cockpit display with two circular instruments has been refreshed with an all-new digital look.

Several displays appear to merge seamlessly, resulting in an impressive 141-centimetre wide and curved screen band. The area that passengers can experience is 2,432.11 sq. cm. The large glass cover display is curved three-dimensionally in the molding process at temperatures of approximately 650°C. This process allows a distortion-free view of the display unit across the entire width of the vehicle, irrespective of the display cover radius.

Thanks to its clear design, the MBUX Hyperscreen is intuitive and easy to operate. One example of this is the EV display, important functions of the electric drive such as boost or recuperation are visualized in a new way, with a spatially moving clasp, making it tangible for the user. A lens-shaped object moves between these clamps, which follows gravity and thus is able to impressively depict the g-Force.

Personalized suggestions
Infotainment systems offer numerous and extensive functions, typically with several operating steps often required to control them. In order to reduce these interactive steps even further, with the aid of artificial intelligence, Mercedes-Benz has developed a user interface with context-sensitive awareness.

Mercedes-Benz researched the usage behaviour of the first MBUX generation, and learned that most of the use cases fall in the Navigation, Radio/Media and Phone categories. Therefore, the navigation application is always at the centre of the screen unit with full functionality for ease of use. Over 20 further functions – from the active massage program to a birthday reminder, and suggestions for a to-do list – are automatically offered with the aid of artificial intelligence, if they are relevant to the customer.

“With MBUX, our goal was to create the most desirable automotive infotainment system. We have transferred the bipolarity of our design philosophy Sensual Purity to MBUX – that is, on the one hand the sensual beauty and on the other the ‘wow effect’ of the uniquely intuitive operation. We have invented a new interface that brings design and technology together. The MBUX Hyperscreen was born as a digital piece of art, a futuristic, luxurious sculpture and also a huge technological challenge,” said Wagener.

As 2020 is nearing the end, the business sector must be looking forward to a new year. Though the pandemic is far from over, we now have a vaccine so there is hope that 2021 can see less worries about infection spreading.

The auto sector must certainly be looking forward to sales growth and is filling showrooms with new models. The latest to launch a new range is Mercedes-Benz Malaysia (MBM) which today unveiled its eighth model to join the premium SUV line-up, the all-new Mercedes-Benz GLA. Two variants are available – the GLA 200 and GLA 250 4MATIC – both of which are imported CBU from Germany.

The GLA 200 comes in Progressive Line spec with a 1.3-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder 163 bhp/250 Nm engine and 7G-DCT automatic transmission. The GLA 250 4MATIC has the AMG Line spec and comes with a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine. Turbocharging boosts output to 224 bhp/350 Nm which goes through an 8G-DCT automatic transmission to all 4 wheels.

Save money if you buy this month
Depending on when you buy the new cars, the price will differ. Before December 31, 2020, the exemption of half the amount of sales tax means the GLA 200 will be priced (without insurance) from RM244,199.82, and the GLA 250 from RM285,336.66. From January 1, if the exemption is not extended, then the 5% sales tax will be included which will raise the prices to RM252,888.00 and RM295,888.00, respectively.

The new GLA has, for some time, served as the entry-level model to the SUV family, offering the benefits of a compact car as well as a SUV.  “The GLA is the key entry point to the brand in the fast-growing compact SUV family. The model enables us to offer a unique lifestyle proposition that is similar to the bigger GLB that we have recently introduced,” said Michael Jopp, Vice-President, Sales & Marketing Passenger Cars, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia.

This new generation is the second one since the model line appeared in 2013. While having a similar styling theme, the body is slightly smaller but the wheelbase has been extended by 30 mm as it now sits on the MFA-2 platform. At 4.41 metres in length, it is the shortest vehicle in the current Mercedes-Benz portfolio.

As a crossover  SUV, the styling has functionality but also sportiness, with short overhangs front and rear. As before, there are powerful shoulders and the coupe-like lines of the side windows which give a contoured side profile.

Like the other Mercedes-Benz SUV models, the radiator grille features distinctive openings along with a single louvre and a central star, with LED High Performance headlamp. All-round protective cladding adds structure to the overall proportions and emphasizes the vehicle’s character, as does the simulated underride guard at the front and rear.

More compact outside but more spacious inside
Although shorter than its predecessor, the new GLA offers a more spacious interior, particularly for rear legroom and luggage compartment volume. The seating position for both the driver and the front passenger is higher and more upright than before too, more typical of an SUV.

Utility value was, in general, one of the focuses of development. There is plenty of room for one or two people in the rear and with a 40:20:40 division of the backrests, flexibility in the layout is possible.

The height-adjustable load floor also offers considerable variability. When the rear seat backrests are folded down and the load floor is in the upper position, an almost flat loading area extending to the front seats can be created to take long items.

The instrument panel consists of a basic volume, which features optical ‘cut-outs’ in the driver and front passenger area. The cut-out on the driver’s side is dominated by the free-standing display unit with two 10.25-inch displays.

The round ventilation outlets (5 in all) have a high-quality turbine look with meticulously designed air guidance vanes. The door centre panel flows seamlessly over into the armrest, while the grab handle has a tubular profile and runs horizontally like a railing.

The latest generation of the Mercedes me connect is also standard with the GLA and of course, there is the intuitively operated MBUX infotainment system (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) in its latest version. MBUX can be individually configured with the aid of a range of options to personalise  interaction. Remote Engine Start is also available with the GLA 250.

Helping the driver
The GLA comes with many driving assistance systems, offering the driver cooperative support to avoid accidents. The systems can automatically activate the brakes if a collision is imminent and the driver has taken no action to prevent it. In the GLA 250, Blind Spot Assist warns of vehicles, including bicycles, in the blind zone and also signal the driver with a visual warning in the exterior mirror if a vehicle is driving past if the door is about to be opened.
