Mitsubishi Motors has released further information regarding its upcoming e-Evolution concept vehicle that will make its debut at the upcoming Tokyo Motorshow. The all-electric crossover SUV will feature a number of innovations that allow it to stand out from other similar offerings.

The sleek and angular Mitsubishi will come with some decent tech that make it a sophisticated performance vehicle. According to the automaker, the e-Evolution will get a triple motor 4WD system with two of those motors being governed by Active Yaw Control (AYC), high torque electric drive and adaptive response characteristics.

This vehicle makes use of electric motors that deliver high level of horsepower and torque that send power to all four wheels via the sophisticated all-wheel-drive system. A single motor drives the front wheels while two others, power the rear wheels.

Power is shifted between them through the electronically controlled torque-vectoring Active Yaw Control (AYC) unit. And the vehicle’s smooth power delivery is made possible by the vehicle’s high capacity battery system that allows for gradual power delivery to the respective motors.

Working in tandem, Mitsubishi says that the vehicle will be able to offer drivers precise and nimble handling as well as the ability to adapt to his/her driving style. Unlike other EVs, the e-Evolution is able to offer improved performance characteristics, although exact figures have yet to be released.

But the e-Evolution’s party piece is its use of artificial intelligence to enhance the capabilities of a driver. The vehicle is fitted with a whole host of sensors that allow the AI system to read changes in road and traffic conditions as well as study and assess the driver’s intent.

It is able to think ahead of the driver, and match his/her intentions with that of the vehicle’s performance, it acts as a safety net, allowing drivers to enjoy the drive without worrying about loosing control.

Adding to that, this particular AI system can also help improve a driver’s expertise by constantly providing suggestions through voice dialogue or by displaying messages on the dashboard. It works by examining a driver’s skill level then constructing a training program that will help him/her sharpen their skills behind the wheel.

This and several similar AI technologies will be showcased by Mitsubishi at the motorshow, which will definitely be to the liking of its legion of fans who have waited patiently for the news.

Mitsubishi has reported that last month, was its best September sales month in the past 10 years for North America. The company stated that it managed to sell 8,430 vehicles in September, which is a 17.2% increase during the same month in 2016.

It’s relatively new Outlander help bolster these sales figures by selling 2,896 units, which is a 50.4% increase compared to last year. Combined CUV sales for Mitsubishi climbed 34.3% over last year with total CUV sales of 6,035.

So far, the Japanese automaker has managed to sell 79,195 vehicles this year, which is a 6.5% increase compared to the same period last year. This means that after a rough couple of years due to stiff competition and a number of other issues, have caused the Mitsubishi to loose ground to its rivals.

That however may soon change as the company gears up for the launch of the e-Evolution and a number of other offerings that will be of interest to the general public. That said, we shall have to wait and see how well things pan out for the brand.

Mitsubishi fans who were expecting a resurgence in performance vehicles manufactured by the brand, will be disappointed. Though the Japanese automaker has revived the Eclipse nameplate, the vehicle that carries the name, is a crossover.

The angular styling is inline with Mitsubishi’s current design language, and overall, the Eclipse Cross has a silhouette that is a cross between a hatchback and an SUV. The raked roof, elongated rear taillights and overall compact dimensions give it an almost car-like presence.

Sporting similar looks to the Outlander SUV, the Eclipse Cross is powered by an all-new 1.5-litre turbocharged engine that develops 163bhp and 250Nm of torque. It can be mated to either a six-speed manual transmission or an automatic one with Sport mode.

The automatic unit features step logic technology that enables it to offer the efficiency of a CVT but the responsiveness of a standard geared transmission. It sends power to the wheels via the latest generation Super All-wheel Control (S-AWC) system.

Available in a number of trim levels, the Eclipse Cross is fitted with sophisticated infotainment system with smartphone compatibility (support for Apple Play and Android Auto), six speaker system and a touch-pad controller.

The vehicle comes with the latest safety tech that include Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Mitigation (FCM) that uses radar technology to detect a risk of collision, ABS, Active Stability Control, Hill Start Assist, Brake Assist, seven airbags, dusk and rain sensors and automatic operation of the headlamps’ dipped beam.

Other features include leather trim, electrically-adjustable driver’s seat, electric opening panoramic roof, 18-inch alloy wheels, a head-up display, heated front seats, front and rear parking sensors, dual-zone climate control, keyless entry and keyless start, electrically folding door mirrors and of course, silver side sills.

Though many consider it a major let down, the new vehicle does add to Mitsubishi’s SUV portfolio, which should help boost its bottom line. Evidently, the automaker is done with producing fast sedans, instead, its focusing on building capable and electrified SUV styled vehicles.

Mitsubishi Motors has picked the 2017 Tokyo Motorshow as the venue that it will use to reveal its new concept vehicle and future plans. The vehicle in question is the e-Evolution and will incorporte the best technology that the automaker has to offer.

It will replace the venerable Lancer Evolution, the Japanese tuner vehicle that has amassed a cult following since the mid-90s. Built as a rally car for the road, the Evolution, with each new iteration, became faster, more agile and technologically advanced than its respective predecessor.

The last model that was introduced was the Evolution IX, a spitting image of the humble Lancer safe for the aero upgrades. The car was the most advanced Evo in the company’s history. And if this has you excited about what Mitsubishi will reveal in Tokyo, don’t be.

The coveted formula that defined every Evo since the original, has been done away with. Instead, in its place will be a fully-electric vehicle that will resemble a coupe-like SUV. Mitsubishi says that will be fitted with a 4WD electric drivetrain and advanced ‘Artificial Intelligence’ technology.

Though it retains some of the current car’s angular styling, the e-Evolution may not have the same bonkers performance as the original car. That said, it’s all speculation at this point because Mitsubishi has chosen to keep mum about the exact details till the designated date.

All will be revealed at the 45th Tokyo Motor Show 2017, which takes place on October 25th at the Tokyo Big Sight Exhibition Center. As such, we hope that the automaker will resurrect the Evolution nameplate for the right reasons.

Brand loyalty isn’t as important to car buyers as it used to be. These days, many tend to look for models that offer the best bang for their buck rather than stick to a familiar nameplate. However, that isn’t the case for 78 year old Clif Hodson who is known for his love affair with the brand.

Hodson, a UK resident recently picked up a 2016 Mitsubishi Mirage from a dealer in Cheltenham. And it happens to bw his 14th Mitsubishi to date. His loyalty for vehicles made by the Japanese automaker is astounding to say the least. According to him, his affinity for the brand stems from their ability to produce vehicles that are both reliable and comfortable to use as a daily driver.

His first purchase was made in 1979 for a Mitsubishi Colt and in the following years, he and wife, Ann have bought a number of other models including a Sigma, Galant, Lancer, Spacestar, ASX and Mirage. In fact, they have sampled the various types of vehicles too, from MPVs and sedans to hatchbacks and crossovers.

Speaking of his love for the brand, Hodson, said, “The only issue I’ve ever had has been the coil failing on one of my first cars and when I called out the AA the patrolman said he’d never been out to a Mitsubishi before! I like all the equipment too, and my passion for the brand has rubbed off on my family with my daughter owning a Lancer and my granddaughter a small Colt.”

His financial situation has no bearing on his purchasing decisions either, Mitsubishi cars are all he desires. This became evident when he stated that, if he were to win the lottery, he’d rush out any buy a new ASX to use as the daily runabout and a Lancer Evolution for hooning about on a racetrack.

Amanda Gibson, Press & Public Relations Manager, Mitsubishi Motors in the UK, said, “We’re delighted that Mr Hodson is so passionate about Mitsubishi and with this year being the brand’s 100th anniversary, it’s great to hear of customers who are so fond of our cars. We really appreciate his enthusiasm and wish him many more miles of happy Mitsubishi motoring.”

In this age of ‘value deals’ its good to know that some car buyers value heritage and track record as much as their daily bread. Mitsubishi as a manufacturer is known for producing robust cars for the masses. A number of Proton cars were based on several versions of the Lancer and one on the Charisma. Their strong and reliable engines were at the heart of these dependable workhorses.
