In a move that signals Stellantis’ commitment to an electrified future, the automotive giant has revealed the STLA Large platform, set to underpin a range of midsize and large models. This platform, part of Stellantis’ flexible architectures for electric and internal combustion cars, promises impressive adjustability, powertrain flexibility, and performance capabilities.

The STLA Large platform is designed for D- and E-segment cars, crossovers, and SUVs, covering midsize to large vehicles. With lengths ranging from 4765mm to 5125mm and width from 1897mm to 2029mm, slightly bigger than a Peugeot 5008, the platform offers significant adjustability in overhangs, wheelbase, suspension placement, and powertrain arrangement.

Key features of the STLA Large platform include:

  • Powertrain Flexibility: Supports front-, rear-, and all-wheel-drive layouts with options for single- and dual-motor setups. Internal combustion engines are also available, either alone or as hybrids. Longitudinal or transverse engine placements are accommodated.
  • Battery Packs: Options for battery packs with capacities between 85 and 118 kWh, available in 400- and 800-volt designs. Stellantis claims sedan-style vehicles on this platform could achieve a range of up to 804km.
  • Future-Ready: Designed to easily accommodate future energy storage technologies, hinting at potential advancements in battery chemistries and solid-state batteries.
  • Impressive Performance: Some models on the platform are expected to achieve 0-100km/h times in the 2-second range. Features like limited-slip differentials and wheel-end disconnects contribute to enhanced power delivery and reduced mechanical drag.

This platform aligns with Stellantis’ electrification strategy, supporting models like the concept Dodge Charger Daytona Banshee and Jeep Wagoneer S. The Charger concept showcased a wide range of electric powertrains with outputs ranging from 456hp to 670hp, and the Wagoneer S is expected to offer a powerful electric variant with around 600hp.

The launch of the STLA Large platform coincides with the introduction of new Dodge and Jeep models in 2024. Stellantis plans to extend the use of this platform to Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, and Maserati, with a total of eight models across the Stellantis lineup scheduled to launch through 2026. The platform’s adaptability, performance capabilities, and focus on electrification position it as a pivotal element in Stellantis’ transition toward sustainable and high-performance mobility.

The ongoing shift towards electric vehicles (EVs) is encountering an unexpected obstacle – a reluctance among buyers to invest in used electric cars. This trend is not only impacting the thriving secondhand market, with prices dropping faster than their combustion-engine counterparts, but it is also sending shockwaves through the new EV market, affecting industry giants like Tesla, Volkswagen, and Stellantis.

Market Dynamics and Pricing Wars

According to a report in Japan Times by Monica Raymunt, in the $1.2 trillion secondhand market, the value of battery-powered cars is plummeting due to factors such as a lack of subsidies, consumer anticipation for improved technology, and ongoing challenges in charging infrastructure. A fierce pricing battle initiated by Tesla and competition from Chinese models is further contributing to the depreciation of both new and used EVs.

This underscores the delicate balance automakers face in pricing their EVs competitively while ensuring sustainable profits. The current scenario may necessitate a reevaluation of pricing strategies to ensure long-term market viability.

In order to build a network of 30,000 new EV fast-charging stations, seven major manufacturers have joined forces. The first chargers are expected to be operational in the United States in the second half of 2024 and in Canada at a later stage thanks to a joint venture by BMW, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, and Stellantis.

Both the Combined Charging System (CCS) and Tesla’s exclusive North American Charging Standard (NACS) connections are supported by these chargers. Several manufacturers, like Mercedes-Benz and GM, who are involved in this joint venture, have already committed to use these NACS connections in the near future.

Lancia, which is part of the FCA Group within Stellantis, seemed to have no future not so long ago. Its declining sales numbers and a stagnant range with just one model  put its continued existence at risk, and it was only Italians who seemed to have any affinity for the brand.

Stellantis sees Lancia as a brand with some hope and is willing to help it revive and embark on a new era. For a start, the 116-year old company has worked on a new brand vision which takes it into the electric age.

The brand vision has a design vision which was described last November and previewed in the Pu+Ra Zero, a 3-dimensional ‘manifesto’ that will guide the designers of the 3 new Lancia models to be launched between 2024 and 2028. Created from the words ‘Pure’ and ‘Radical’, Lancia Pu+Ra Design is described as a sustainable design language that is intended to ‘last for the next 100 years’.

Unveiled in November 1971 at the Turin Motor Show, the Alfasud was a significant new model by Alfa Romeo. Although the Volkswagen Golf, which arrived a few years later, would continue to exist to this day, the Alfasud was essentially a single generation that never had a successor of the same name.

It was nevertheless a commercial success in its time, with over a million units sold worldwide between 1971 and 1989. Besides Italy, the Alfasud was also assembled in South Africa, Malta and also Malaysia.

Local assembly in Malaysia (at the Swedish Motor Assembly plant in Shah Alam) was due to the enthusiasm of City Motors, then the importer and distributor of the brand, particularly Datuk Dr. Foo Wan Kien.

Motoring enthusiasts often talk about driving as an emotional thing and while there are various kinds of emotions – stress, fear, anger – it is often the emotion of pleasure that is publicised. ‘Driving’ pleasure is often mentioned as what can be experienced from a new car and advertisements play it up in different ways.

Going together with driving pleasure for sportscars is also the sound of the engine and exhaust – a growl or a roar or even a crackle – and it is what gets the adrenaline flowing faster. The ultimate sound comes from racing cars which, not being restricted by regulations for vehicles used on public roads, are typically louder.

With electrically-powered cars, there is no combustion engine, no exhaust pipe – and therefore no sound. Environmentalists are happy with the prospect of roads becoming quieter in future as more electric vehicles (EVs) travel on them. But for those who have always loved driving and the pleasure it gives, the absence of engine and exhaust sound is a huge loss. The silence, as the saying goes, is ‘deafening’.
