Pick-up trucks and fashion can go together, as Isuzu Malaysia showed recently at the KL Fashion Week 2022 (KLFW 2022). Besides being presented as the epitome of the modern truck, its D-MAX X-Terrain was also Official Ultimate Lifestyle Vehicle of the annual event.

Additionally, Isuzu Malaysia also teamed up with Super Sunday, a homegrown streetwear brand, to introduce a super sleek collection called ‘Sunday Bois’ during KLFW 2022.

Well known for its streetwear having a mixture and display of fashion, music and other popular street culture, namely skateboarding and graffiti, the latest ‘Sunday Bois’ line showed how the brand has gone through several evolutions while still maintaining its core design DNA.

The new creations were also inspired by the D-MAX X-Terrain which Super Sunday’s founder, Zulkifli Salleh aka Bob aka Mr Kioue, travelled in. Bob established a multi-level store for independent artists from humble beginnings in 2007.

“For Sunday Bois, the collection still maintains its house codes and creative polymath. However, it feels elevated and boosted in various ways. While its core skate roots and unmistakably innovative take on the hooded sweatshirts will no doubt ensure it retains a strong following among the cool set, this collection seems to go parallel with the brand’s growth, not just in aesthetics but in business,” said Bob.

“The collaboration with Isuzu D-MAX, Hikari, Homebois/Daddyhood, VANS and SSST – brands that have created a big impact globally –  is important, both creatively and as a strategic business proposition,” he added.

Commenting on their involvement in KLFW 2022, Isuzu Malaysia’s Chief Operating Officer, Kenkichi Sogo, said: “With its cutting-edge design, superlative features and extraordinary go-anywhere, do-anything capabilities, the Isuzu D-MAX is all about challenging the norm and allowing you to forge your fondest memories. Together with the KLFW, we aim to bring forward novel, imaginative and inspiring designs to share with the Malaysian audience.”

Over the coming 12 months, the Asia-Pacific region will get two new racetracks but these will be ultra exclusive facilities rather than being open to the general public. In 2023, Club Moolia will open in Perth, Australia, and the country club will have a FIA-approved circuit. But before Club Moolia opens, The Magarigawa Club in Japan will also open (in early 2023)  and this club will also have a circuit for its members’ use.

The club has been established by the Cornes Group, which has in its group automotive dealerships in Japan dealing with the exclusive luxury and high-performance brands. While the club, located in Minamiboso, Chiba Prefecture, about 1½ hours  south of Tokyo, has all the usual facilities expected by its high-end clientele, the key feature would be the circuit.

“Magarigawa will be home for car-lovers. A sanctuary where members will be able to enjoy and share their passion with friends and family.” said Kenzo Watari, CEO, Cornes Group. “It will be the answer to the perennial question – where do you drive an 800 horsepower supercar?”

The circuit under construction in the hilly terrain.

The original terrain around the circuit (left) before work started in 2020, and construction work underway last year (right)..

Built on hilly terrain, the contractors have had to move 1,510,000 cubic metres of earth. To add to the challenges of the project, the 1 million square metre site has a stream running through it for more than 2 kms.

None other than Tilke Engineers & Architects was chosen to design the circuit. The company has designed numerous F1 circuits around the world, including the Sepang International Circuit. This, however, is the first course in Japan that the team has designed from scratch.

“When I first heard about the idea of creating a private Japanese club circuit in Tokyo, I immediately got excited to get involved in this project. The extremely hilly topography offers an astonishing basis for the track and makes the layout absolutely unique in the world.” said Dr. Carsten Tilke, Managing Director of Tilke Engineers & Architects. “Although we have designed and realized over 80 racetracks worldwide, including 19 Formula One circuits, this project is very special to us, and we are proud to be part of it.”

The circuit, which has been laid out to flow with the hilly terrain, will have a maximum ascent of 20% and maximum descent of 16%, with an elevation change of 250 metres. The longest straight is 800 metres in length, making it a track like no other. There will be 22 corners over its 3.5-km length.

There will be 22 cameras at strategic locations around the circuit. Operators will be able to control camera angle and zoom in to get a closer view, when necessary. This will enable them to observe the conditions and more importantly, spot accidents as soon as they happen and take the necessary action.

“Drivers will enjoy mid-speed, technical sections as well as two high-speed straights, and there will be the highest safety and environmental standards. It will be ideal for all kinds of driver skills. As a car enthusiast and racing driver myself, I can’t wait to drive my first laps at this amazing unique track!” said Dr. Tilke.

Members can drive or transport their cars to the course and store them on-site as well. There will be personalised lessons with professional instructors so the owners can explore the potential of their cars in a safe manner. The climate-controlled pit building can accommodate up to 36 vehicles and technicians will be on hand to provide maintenance checks whenever needed.

Besides the clubhouse, there are also accommodation facilities at a cluster of luxury villas named ‘Owner’s Paddock’. The first 5 units have already been sold and another 4 will be offered before the opening. Each villa has indoor parking for up to 4 vehicles and overlooks the circuit. There will be concierge and housekeeping services available.

Memberships are now on sale but only 50 are on offer for the first batch (until the end of June 2022). Each membership is priced as 29.9 million yen (about RM1.030 million) and presumably, there will also be periodic subscription fees which are not mentioned.

ADVERTORIAL

In the late 1990s, licensing regulations for the use of pick-up trucks changed allowing them to be registered for private use like passenger cars. The development was very significant and gave Malaysians an alternative to the passenger car for personal transport. Furthermore, they were also not subject to excise duty due to the provisions of the ASEAN Free Trade Agreement, allowing their prices to be lower.

The development was significant as it saw rapid expansion of the pick-up truck segment. Tens of thousands of Malaysians switched to trucks over the years, finding them to be great for many different roles – daily transport, leisure activities and as a workhorse for those who had a small business.

Isuzu Motors, having had long experience in pick-up trucks and light commercial vehicles, took serious note of this trend and began to adapt its D-MAX truck to be more suited for personal use. Of course, all the original attributes such as go-anywhere capability, efficient and reliable powertrains and robust engineering were maintained and improved with each generation.

The best of the best
Today, the D-MAX is in its third generation which was launched in April 2021. Without a doubt, it can be considered the best D-MAX ever offered and the ‘best of the best‘ would be the X-Terrain version which is at the top of the range.

The D-MAX X-Terrain would be the ideal pick-up truck for anyone who is keen to switch to the ‘trucking lifestyle’. For starters, let’s consider the interior: back in the old days, pick-up truck interiors were pretty bare because they were used only for rough work. So there was no point putting in good materials or even providing comfort – and certainly, there was no air-conditioning. The pick-up trucks them would have been unappealing even if they could be used for personal transport.

2022 Isuzu D-MAX X-Terrain

Step (or more correctly, climb) inside and you will find a cabin which would be comparable to a passenger car’s. There’s no bare metal around as all surfaces are covered with trim pieces or soft materials. The seats have been thoughtfully structured for comfort with generous padding and good support. For enhanced comfort the seat cushion pads also feature Anti Vibration Elastic Comfort foam that can absorb vibrations more quickly than conventional cushion material.

The same convenience
You won’t miss anything that you had in your car when you move to a D-MAX X-Terrain because all the same convenience and connectivity features are present. The windows open and close at the touch of a switch and 9-inch display screen serves as a control centre for the infotainment system. You can transfer your favourite apps onto the system and access them from there using Apple Carplay or Android Auto, or Bluetooth connectivity. Voice commands can also be used for handsfree operation, making driving safer.

2022 Isuzu D-MAX X-Terrain

And yes, there is air-conditioning and it’s as efficient as the one you would have had in your car. Dual-zone distributions brings cool air throughout the cabin and there are also vents for the rear passengers to stay cool. The driver and front passenger car set their own preferred temperature or the system can be left on AUTO and keep the environment cool and comfortable.

Even for those who are not drivers, the transition from passenger car to the D-MAX X-Terrain will be seamless as the rear seats are just as comfortable. There are lots of storage spaces for devices and small stuff, and there are even hidden compartments under the seats to keep an iPad or other belongings out of sight.

2022 Isuzu D-MAX X-Terrain

Smart technologies
Other smart technologies also make the ownership experience of a D-MAX X-Terrain as easy as a passenger car. For instance, you can start the engine from a distance and run the air-conditioner to cool down the interior before getting in. There’s no need to use a key to unlock or start the vehicle and it will even lock itself when you walk away. How many cars can do that?

For the driver, the experience is also not much different from driving a car. In fact, the information on the instrument panel and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are more extensive than many cars in the same price range as the D-MAX X-Terrain.

2022 Isuzu D-MAX X-Terrain

But there is one thing about driving a pick-up truck which is advantageous and which a passenger car does not have – the commanding view. With the cab being higher, the seating position is also higher which gives the driver a better view of the road ahead. And for those who are intimidated by the length, a reverse camera as well as sensors in the rear bumper (also in the front bumper) makes parking easy and you’ll be able to slot into a parking bay without sweating.

ADAS makes driving safer
Just as comfort and convenience were not important in the old pick-up trucks, safety features were basic. However, with the D-MAX X-Terrain, the Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) help the driver to avoid an accident or lessen the damaging effects of a collision. The driver’s workload is also lessened because, with Adaptive Cruise Control, the vehicle can be left to cruise at a set speed with a safe gap always maintained from the vehicle ahead. Even the headlights will switch to low beams automatically if there is a vehicle approaching.

Isuzu considers the safety of occupants equally important as those in passenger cars and has engineered the D-MAX X-Terrain to provide superior protection in the event of an accident. Apart from the tough structure, there are also various safety systems to helped the driver avoid accidents or reduce their effects. Thus, the D-MAX X-Terrain has been able to receive the maximum score of 5 stars in the ASEAN NCAP evaluation tests.

Comfortable and also powerful
The cabin may have comfortable seating but a truck is still a truck, right? It’s tall and bounces around on rough ground and the engine is noisy. That was how the old trucks were but with modern trucks like the D-MAX X-Terrain, the platform has been more carefully engineered not just for strength but also rigidity. Together with the comfort-oriented suspension, the ride quality is smooth and comfortable even when travelling over rough terrain.

2022 Isuzu D-MAX X-Terrain

With the 3-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine generating up to 190 ps of power and 450 Nm of torque, the D-MAX X-Terrain can go just about anywhere – and briskly too. Apart from the tree-stump pulling power, it can also get to speeds well beyond the highest national speed limit and if you want to avoid getting a summons, Isuzu provides a speed-limiter to keep the speed at the limit.

Carries more durians than a car
Switching from a passenger car to the D-MAX X-Terrain can change your life because it will bring a whole new lifestyle for you and your friends or family. There’s a lots of space at the back to carry all kinds of recreational gear and you can certainly carry more durians or plants with a D-MAX X-Terrain than you could with any car (even a stationwagon). And because it has truck genes, the load-carrying capacity is also higher than a passenger car’s.

2021 Isuzu D-MAX 4th Generation

Reliability and durability are a given with Isuzu vehicles and to give peace of mind to owners, Isuzu Malaysia offers a 7-year warranty with no limit on mileage. This means that the owner can enjoy the full 7 years of coverage against manufacturing defects (terms and condition apply).

The best way to discover how easy it is to switch from a passenger car to the D-MAX X-Terrain is to test-drive one at an authorized Isuzu dealership. To find one in Peninsular or East Malaysia, visit www.isuzu.net.my  and you can soon start your new trucking lifestyle.

R3 is well known among Malaysian motorsports enthusiasts, especially Proton fans. As the motorsport and performance division of Proton, it has been active in ‘Race, Rally and Research’, which is what R3 stands for. Almost 20 years old, R3 has made a name for itself in local and international motorsport events, particularly in rallying.

With R3 now ‘parked’ under Proton Global Services (PGS), a fully owned subsidiary of Proton Edar, there is new impetus going forward and while there will continue to be racing activities, R3 is also diversifying with the addition of a new range of lubricants that would be ideal for Proton cars.

The new R3 range of Premium Genuine Oils has been developed together with Petronas and is available in fully-synthetic (P1) and semi-synthetic (P2) formulations. Both genuine oils are formulated using Petronas’ latest Etro 6+ base oil and are designed to fight excessive heat to ensure better performance for the current generation of direct injection turbocharged engines. With SP and SN Plus ratings, they meet the latest levels of service certification by the American Petroleum Institute (API).

The R3 Premium Genuine Oil is priced at RM208 for the P1 fully-synthetic formulation and RM158 for the P2 semi-synthetic product. Until April 30, 2022, they will be offered at an introductory price of RM178 and RM128, respectively.

“The launch of our new R3 Premium Genuine Oil range is the first step in R3’s rebranding journey. They will be sold to the public via our Premium Merchandise Partners in 20 locations throughout Malaysia. There will be more product launches coming up in the future, including accessories for Proton car owners, which will help us build our connections with R3 fans,” said Lee Yeet Chuan, CEO of Proton Global Services.

Mr. Lee said that there will also be a new range of merchandise to reconnect with fans and expand the reach of the brand as well as bring R3 heritage and products closer to the public. The new range of t-shirts and caps are priced between RM49 to RM60 and will also be available at all Premium Merchandise Partner locations.

Proton’s new Gallery of Inspiration shows carmaker’s past, present and future

Electric vehicles run on electricity, so they will not give off smells that have been associated with the motorcar for over 100 years. Those smells are typically the fumes of the fuel, exhaust gases and also lubricants in some cases.

In a Ford-commissioned survey, one in five drivers said the smell of petrol is what they would miss most if they switched to an electric vehicle, with almost 70% claiming they would miss the smell of petrol to some degree. Petrol also ranked as a more popular scent than both wine and cheese, and almost identically to the smell of new books.

Association with the Mustang
This led Ford to look for a way to help those with a fondness for the evocative smells of traditional petrol cars to make the transition. Their solution: a high-end fragrance that fuses smokiness, aspects of rubber and even an ‘animal’ element to associate with the Ford Mustang heritage.

The Mustang connection is because Ford is now selling an electrically-powered variant of the bestselling sportscar in the world – the Mustang Mach-E GT. It was revealed over last weekend at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in England. However, it’s not for sale and is part of the carmaker’s ongoing mission to help dispel myths around electric cars and convince traditional car enthusiasts of the potential of electric vehicles.

Created by a perfume specialist
Known as ‘Mach-Eau’, the fragrance was created by British fragrance specialist, Olfiction, with ingredients that each add a specific element of the scent’s story. Olfiction’s Pia Long, an Associate Perfumer in the British Society of Perfumers, has been creating fragrances for some of the most famous perfume brands and was instrumental in its inception.

Her starting point was to look into the chemicals that are emitted from car interiors, engines and petrol. This included benzaldehyde, which is an almond-like scent given off by car interiors, and para-cresol which is key in creating the rubbery scent of tyres. These were blended with ingredients like blue ginger, lavender, geranium and sandalwood that added metallic, smoky and further rubbery accents. An ‘animal’ element was also included, giving an impression of horses to underline the Mustang heritage. The bottle also comes in a container shaped like a fuel pump.

The all-electric Mustang Mach-E GT.

“Judging by our survey findings, the sensory appeal of petrol cars is still something drivers are reluctant to give up. The Mach Eau fragrance is designed to give them a hint of that fuel-fragrance they still crave. It should linger long enough for the GT’s performance to make any other doubts vaporise too,” said Jay Ward, director, Ford of Europe Product Communications.

Other carmakers have perfumes too
While Ford has no plans to commercialise the Mach Eau fragrance, other carmakers have licensed the use of their brand names on perfumes for many years. Exotic carmakers like Lamborghini and Ferrari have a line of perfumes though they are essentially perfumes without that ‘connection’ the car smells.

Mazda Design also got involved in the carmaker’s first perfume product in 2017. The perfume, with a blend of wood, rose and leather fragrances, was intended to be associated with Mazda’s KODO: Soul of Motion design concept. While the bottle was typical of such products, the outer case that it was stored in was meant to symbolize the KODO design and won a gold award in Germany’s iF Design Awards.

Mazda owners and fans will know about ‘Jinba Ittai’ – that unity between the driver and the car, the way a rider and a horse can be ‘one’. ‘Jinba Ittai’ became embedded as a core philosophy for Mazda from 1987, during the development of the first MX-5. Tetsu Kasahara, a young engineer in the Chassis Dynamics Development Department at that time, recalls the term being used internally. “One day, Toshihiko Hirai, the first-gen MX-5’s Programme Manager, started printing ‘Jinba Ittai‘ on his business cards, and I think that’s how it came to be used externally,” he said.

Since then, Jinba-Ittai is a must for every Mazda and it is what makes the company’s cars special, especially to those who love driving. It’s not just in the sports models but in every model Mazda makes, including its trucks and MPVs. In some cases where models have been shared with other mnufacturers, eg the early Mazda3 and the Tribute SUV, Mazda engineers have made some small but effective modifications that have achieved Jinba Ittai for the brand’s models.

The importance of driving shoes
Just as the tyres are the crucial contact a car has with the road, the feet of the driver are crucial in the control and driving experience. In pursuit of the best possible Jinba Ittai experience for drivers, Mazda teamed up with Mizuno, a well-known sportswear company, to jointly develop driving shoes. Also involved in the project was Makuake Incubation Studio which provides new product and new business development support.

The driving shoes are said to provide the driver with a driving experience of light yet stable and comfortable pedal operation. For effective operation of the pedals, ‘dorsiflexion support upper’ helps to pull back the foot to the top. The reaction force of the areas that flex makes it easier to adjust the amount of pedal depression more precisely. Mizuno used posture control technology that it cultivated in the development of competition swimwear.

MIZUNO COB technology in sole
The shoes use MIZUNO COB, which enhances the sensitivity of the soles of the feet in order to communicate with the car and obtain a direct feeling of operation. MIZUNO COB can transmit more accurate information to the sole by adding unevenness on the upper surface of the midsole that is linked to the design of the outsole. It provides a direct pedal feel while ensuring the cushioning required for comfort. It therefore enhances Jinba Ittai during driving, giving the sense of unity between the driver and the car and enables smooth pedal operation in various driving situations.

Commenting on the shoes, a Mizuno designer said that if the shoes that connect the driver and the car are solid, human abilities will naturally be brought out. “Shoes are also an important factor in driving; after all, you can’t run well if you wear business shoes when running,” he explained.

Mazda Design was involved in the shoe design as well, welcoming the challenge of designing a product they have never done before. As with Mazda vehicles, the form is fused with texture and functionality at a high level. The shoe has a black theme (with grey elements) in its design  and each shoe weighs 270 grams.

Mazda’s Kodo Design is 10 years old and continues to evolve

Mercedes-AMG doesn’t make boats and Cigarette Racing doesn’t make cars, but the two companies have collaborated on many projects where the carmaker’s high-performance automotive expertise has been used to make Cigarette Racing’s boats (by the way, the 52-year old company doesn’t actually race) since 2007.

The 13th project is the all-new Cigarette 41’ Nighthawk AMG Black Series special edition boat which is associated with, and draws inspiration from, the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series. This boat joins a range of exclusive special edition performance boats, with the claim of exclusivity and craftsmanship unlike any other performance boat in its segment.

Cigarette 41’ Nighthawk AMG Black Series

The 41’ Nighthawk AMG Black Series Edition draws on Cigarette’s advanced engineering, utilizing cutting-edge elements such as a unique twin-step hull design to deliver its remarkable on-water performance. A low centre of gravity, which improves handling, and light overall weight, which improves speed, have been achieved using a completely carbonfibre deck and an all carbonfibre hardtop design. Intelligent use of composite materials and proprietary construction techniques improve structural integrity, delivering enhanced ride comfort and composed handling characteristics in even the most demanding conditions.

High performance over water
The boat’s design is where Mercedes-AMG was largely involved, with its team and Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer Daimler Group, translating the shared philosophies between the German carmaker and Cigarette. With its dramatic proportions, benchmark-setting power and striking design, the new Nighthawk AMG Black Series delivers Mercedes-AMG’s type of performance over water.

Cigarette 41’ Nighthawk AMG Black Series

The special edition boat sets new standards in performance within its segment. For example, it is the first in its model range to feature 5 racing-grade outboard engines. These five 4.6-litre V8 Mercury Racing 450R outboard engines create an industry-leading 450 peak propshaft horsepower each, and are controlled via an advanced shadowing throttle system, which allows only two levers to be used to control all 5 engines simultaneously.

The combined 2,250 hp output accelerates this special edition boat to a top speed of more than 145 km/h. Nowhere as fast as the top speed of the car which is 325 km/h but an impressively high speed for a boat. This is an achievement of particularly high significance for a boat in this large centre console segment which can comfortably hold more than ten people and still feature exceptional luxury amenities.

Magmabeam colour theme from car
The eye-catching Magmabeam orange and black exterior of this special edition is influenced by the AMG GT Black Series, which debuted the Magmabeam exterior colour as an exclusive new option, as well as optional orange elements inside.

Cigarette 41’ Nighthawk AMG Black Series

The Magmabeam orange and black colour scheme is further enhanced by small AMG logos painted towards the bow of the boat in a repeating pattern. The logos are not decals and each one has been individually painted. The centre trim pieces of the engine cowlings are also painted in Magmabeam orange, uniting the distinctive aesthetic from bow to stern.

The layout of the Cigarette 41’ Nighthawk AMG Black Series focuses around a central console with a helm and cabin in the centre of the boat, with the ability to walk around on both sides, and an open bow for seating up front. Part of what makes the Cigarette Racing Team centre console unique is its advanced hull design, incorporating a highly refined ‘twin step’ design that makes the boat dramatically more efficient.

Cigarette 41’ Nighthawk AMG Black Series

Attention to detail within
The exceptional attention to detail is also found inside where the colour theme is primarily grey and black, with distinctive orange detailing. The vessel also features the unique Cigarette Cool upholstery, which dissipates heat so that dark colours can remain comfortable, even when exposed to consistent sun and heat while cruising.

The forward helm seating consists of two rows (three seats per row), with the front row featuring height adjustability, enabling the captain to achieve an ideal yet personalized seat height for spirited boating. This helm seating layout is advantageous for sporty cruising because you can have 6 people comfortably seated, forward facing, behind the central helm. There is an L-shaped lounge at the rear of the boat, and U-shaped seating at the bow. This layout creates a boat that is not only sporty and agile but still offers the sort of entertainment and luxury that enhances its ability to cruise in comfort and relax with friends.

Cigarette 41’ Nighthawk AMG Black Series

The helm features three Garmin 8617 multi-functional displays flush-mounted to an instrument panel CNC-cut from a solid block of aluminium. This protective coated instrument panel is resistant to heat, reflections and fingerprints, while the perimeter of the panel is uniquely lit by RGB LED accent lighting, providing a distinctive glow, creating the Illusion that the dash is floating. Passengers can feel secure, thanks to stainless steel grab bars and relax in total comfort with an ergonomic CNC-machined footrest.

The 41’ Nighthawk AMG Edition comes with an advanced control-interface design. Controlling the vessel’s features is accomplished through a sophisticated digital switching system. This system offers simple control of all systems onboard and also provides a performance benefit. By reducing the total weight of cables within the boat, the overall weight of the boat is also lowered, enabling higher performance. A lithium-ion battery pack further reduces weight, providing high power density, better durability and lower maintenance.

More than 1,000 parts
The team that developed the watches comprised watch experts as well as IT specialists who integrated more than 1,000 individual parts. Forming the backbone of every smartwatch is the high-strength and hypoallergenic cover, forged from lightweight titanium. The display is a high definition 390×390 pixel LED touchscreen with 16.7 million colours, within a scratch-resistant housing of sculpted sapphire glass.

The bezel – located at the most exposed point on a watch – is carefully sculpted and milled from scratch-resistant ceramic to the smallest of tolerances, made possible by an ultraprecise CNC process. The bezels for all three models are made of scratch-resistant ceramic, elaborately finished by hand in a production process lasting 20 days. With the special key supplied, the customer can replace a bezel within one minute.

All types of data
The watch measures and stores numerous types of electronic data, among them health data. A new dual-sensor measures both heart rate and heart rate variability to report individual health data. Cardiovascular recovery, training recommendations, biological age and stress level measurements are each generated and supported by VO2Max.

The GPS sensor has been especially developed for the watch and has an entirely new level of accuracy and resolution rate. Wearers taking it to the racetrack can have their lap times and acceleration values logged automatically by the GPS sensor. This feature is applied for the first time in the world in a smartwatch.

Battery life is claimed to be up to 14 days between charges, made possible by a custom-built 445mAh power cell. As a statement of the quality of the watch, a warranty of 5 years is given.
