Perodua

Following a recent announcement by the Malaysia Automotive, Robotics and IoT Institute (MARii), Perodua has expressed its support for the government’s initiatives to sustain Malaysia’s automotive industry amidst the ongoing COVID-19 situation.

“Perodua is in full support of the government’s aim to fortify Malaysia’s automotive industry in these trying times, and its various initiatives to achieve that aim,” said Perodua President & CEO, Dato’ Zainal Abidin Ahmad.

“As Malaysia’s biggest carmaker by volume, we are eager and ready to step forward and work with the government to ensure the industry’s continued survival in this difficult time,” he added.

TIV needs to be 500,000 units
According to reports, MARii estimates a 28% drop in new car sales this year due to the Movement Control Order (MCO) brought about by COVID-19. It estimates that a minimum 500,000 units for the Total Industry Volume (TIV) would be needed in 2020 for automotive businesses’ continued survival.

According to the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) which compiles monthly sales report, the TIV up till the end of April was 106,601 units. This means that monthly sales for the remaining 8 months would have to be around 49,175 units to reach MARii’s figure.

Perodua

Based on consultation with its members which are the various importers and distributors, the MAA has already revised its forecast downwards by 33% to 400,000 units from 600,000 units. That’s a TIV level almost similar to what was achieved 19 years ago in 2001

Incentives proposed to stimulate demand
Among the incentives MARii outlined to stimulate demand are a temporary waiver on downpayments, reduced loan interest rates and joint subsidies between carmakers and the government for roadtax and insurance for a limited period.

“It is indeed a challenging time for all of us. However, Perodua is confident that with the government’s collaboration, the industry as well as its ecosystem of suppliers and dealers will be able to weather the storm together,” Dato’ Zainal said.

As reported earlier, Perodua sold delivered 7,886 vehicles in May and a total of 52,920 vehicles during the first five months of 2020. This accounted for a 41% share of the market against an estimated January-May TIV of 129,401 units.

“Perodua is also doing its part to sustain its vast ecosystem of suppliers and dealers. Besides our volume, we assist and support them through investments, purchases and advance purchases, longer credit terms as well as various operational transformation initiatives and development programmes,” Dato’ Zainal added.

Perodua delivered 7,886 vehicles in May as restrictions eased

COVID-19

PISTON.MY

With the ongoing COVID-19 situation which brought businesses in Malaysia to a standstill from March 18, the number of new vehicles sold fell to an unprecedented low, especially in April when no sales or registrations were possible.

However, in May, as the restrictions were relaxed and activity could resume, the car companies could resume deliveries of vehicles already ordered as well as work towards getting new sales. For Perodua, the month of May saw 7,886 cars sold, bringing its year-to-date (YTD) sales total to 52,920 units.

The company presently estimates a YTD Total Industry Volume of 129,401 units, so this would translate to a 41% YTD market share for Perodua.

Perodua delivery

“The situation has had a significant impact on car sales in Malaysia over the past 2 months, but we are thankful that in just 3 weeks since we restarted operations nationwide, we have managed to come close to the level of our March figures pre-Movement Control Order (MCO). We believe we will be able to fulfil our outstanding as well as new orders in a timely manner,” said Perodua President & Chief Executive Officer, Dato’ Zainal Abidin Ahmad.

Making up the May sales tally were 2,612 Myvis, 2,028 Axias, 1,820 Bezzas, 950 Aruz and 476 Alzas. Perodua managed to deliver 8,601 cars in March before the MCO came into effect and all activities had to be suspended.

“In this age of social distancing and heightened hygienic awareness, the role played by personal transport becomes all the more important. Vehicles are still needed for short, quick trips out for household essentials, and e-hailing drivers have begun using their vehicles to deliver goods instead of just transporting passengers,” Dato’ Zainal said.

“Perodua cars are very suitable for such purposes, being compact, affordable, fuel-efficient, dependable, spacious and easy to drive,” he added.

Throughout June, Perodua’s Meaningful Raya campaign is offering special cash redemptions of up to RM1,300 for the Aruz and selected Myvi variants, while buyers of other models will get a RM300 e-voucher that is redeemable for the purchase of selected parts and accessories at any authorised Perodua service centre.

As the leading car company in the country, Perodua has a huge network of sales and aftersales outlets – all of which had to be closed when the Movement Control Order (MCO) was activated on March 18 this year. Now that the situation regarding the COVID-19 virus has eased a bit – though it has not ended – the government is allowing businesses to resume operations.

However, for Perodua, there are 182 sales, 202 service and 68 Body & Paint outlets nationwide and with the Standard Operating Procedures stipulated by the Health Ministry for the protection of the public as well as employees, the facilities have required some reconfiguration. This is to meet important requirements like social distancing that should be 1 metre apart.

Measures such as markers on the floor to guide visitors to stand apart (above) and seating areas also adhere to social distancing requirements (below). Note that the children’s play area is closed off, for safety reasons at this time.

“We announce today that we have finally put in place the necessary safeguards at all our outlets nationwide to ensure that our valued customers and employees will be sufficiently protected in the light of the ongoing COVID-19 situation,” said Perodua President & CEO, Dato’ Zainal Abidin Ahmad.

Perodua outlets restarted operations on a staggered basis from May 12 and the company has been working hard to ensure all the sufficient health and safety measures are in place.

“We thank our valued customers for their patience and loyalty. We will ensure that all their motoring needs will be met as soon and as safely as possible,” he said.

Perodua factory
Vehicle production resumed on May 11 and the company is now doing its best to fulfil demand as quickly as possible.

Customers looking to service their vehicles are required to secure an appointment slot beforehand with their service centre of choice. Walk-ins will not be accepted at present to avoid crowding.

All visitors to any outlet must undergo temperature checks before entering the outlets, register their details and adhere to social distancing markers within the outlets at all times. Hand sanitisers are placed at key locations, while the outlets themselves are sanitised regularly.

“These safeguards are part and parcel of our commitment to our collective health and safety, towards making the Perodua Experience the best it can be,” said Dato’ Zainal.

According to media reports, the NADMA-COVID 19 fund was launched by the Prime Minister on March 11, 2020 with the objective of aiding citizens who are most vulnerable to the impact of the Movement Control Order (MCO), which came into force on March 18, 2020. Based on reports, the fund’s target groups include the unemployed and others affected by the MCO.

The government also recently introduced the Prihatin Rakyat Stimulus Package to further help Malaysians impacted by COVID-19.

“We thank the government for these measures. Perodua, in solidarity with all Malaysians, hopes this pandemic will be resolved in the shortest time and with minimal infections and fatalities. To those who have lost loved ones to COVID-19, we extend our sincere condolences,” Dato’ Zainal said.

“As for Perodua, we have also directed all our staff, the greater automotive supply chain and our authorised dealers to pay keen attention to their staff’s needs and welfare during this MCO. To this end, we are monitoring the situation closely to ensure that our ecosystem’s livelihoods, like wage, benefits and especially employment, are not impacted,” he added.

“We are committed to the social distancing measures enforced by the authorities to ensure the spread of the virus is contained. To our customers in particular and all Malaysians in general, please stay indoors and stay healthy,” Dato’ Zainal urged.

Perodua recently provided additional support for the ongoing efforts of the staff at the Sungai Buloh Hospital which has been designated a major medical facility to handle COVID-19 cases. The carmaker sent 150 mattresses, 200 pillows and 250 pairs of rubber shoes to the hospital for use in its war against the coronavirus pandemic.

Paying tribute to the frontliners who have been working non-stop to save lives, the carmaker said on its Facebook page: “As a caring, People-First company, we’re committed to supporting our national heroes and heroines. You guys are amazing!”.

Perodua has issued a statement to warn the public that it has not made any announcement of 28 units of the Perodua Aruz being given away free on its 28th anniversary. Referring to a message that is circulating on several mobile messaging and social media platforms, the carmaker said it did not originate from Perodua and it appears to be a scam.

“We are now taking all the necessary actions to combat further spread of this scam message,” said Dato’ Zainal Abidin Ahmad, President & CEO of Perodua. Noting that the message has a link inviting the public to register interest, he advised everyone to always be wary and cautious of any suspicious claims.

2019 was a great year for Perodua as it surpassed all previous sales volumes with a total number of 240,341 vehicles delivered. The volume was 5.8% higher than the figure for 2018 which had been the prior record. The Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) will be releasing the full year’s sales data tomorrow but by Perodua’s own estimates that the Total Industry Volume (TIV) for 2019 was 604,775 units, the Malaysian carmaker’s share would have been 40%, an increase of 2% from 2018.

Announcing the achievement, Perodua’s President & CEO, Dato’ Zainal Abidin Ahmad, said that all five models in its range – the Alza, Aruz, Bezza, Axia and Myvi – were segment leaders, with the Aruz notable for being Malaysia’s best-selling SUV with 30,115 units sold.

Export growth to get more attention
Continuing with its efforts on exports, the total volume sold in other countries last year was around 2,825 units, of which 1,800 units of the Myvi were purchased by Daihatsu and sold under its brand in Indonesia. To date, Perodua exports to 7 countries and Sri Lanka is its second largest overseas market where the Bezza was the bestselling sedan in the sub-1.0 litre segment.

Perodua in Mauritius
The latest Myvi introduced in Mauritius attracted a lot of attention.

“While our exports remained modest, we are making good progress in establishing our brand overseas and are looking at further improving the numbers this year,” said Dato’ Zainal. He said that the government has urged Perodua to export more of its vehicles. However, there needs to be proper market studies to ensure that the products are the right ones (at the right price levels) and the marketing done properly. Since 2018, Perodua has stepped up its attention to exports after having been busy on its transformation and cost-competitiveness activities earlier.

Healthy aftersales business continues
Given the position at the lowest end of the market with the most affordable vehicles, it would seem that Perodua customers are probably going to buy one or two and then move upwards to other brands as their personal financial circumstances improve. They would also be less likely to continue using the aftersales services available from Perodua, believing that it’s cheaper to go to the smaller independent workshops.

Perodua service centre

However, Perodua’s figures show that there is a fairly high rate of retention in the aftersales business. Since 2015, service intake has grown by some 20% and while this would also be in tandem with the rising annual sales volume, there are still many owners who continue to return to Perodua’s service centres even after many years. Last year, the service centres nationwide handled over 2.35 million vehicles.

“We have the largest vehicle sales and service network in Malaysia. Our intention is not so much to expand further but to enhance the facilities we already have by working closely with our dealers for the benefit of our valued customers,” said Dato’ Zainal. “In this respect, the company is working with its dealers, which currently make up 75% of its sales and service network, to invest and upgrade facilities.”

Supporting local suppliers
Both Perodua and Proton have had the obligation of helping to develop the domestic automotive industry, particularly the suppliers so that parts and systems can be obtained locally. Perodua has been diligent at this and has consistently helped its suppliers to grow and remain ‘healthy’. Even in difficult market conditions when sales have slowed down, Perodua has stepped in to assist in various ways so that the vendors do not have serious financial problems that impact their ability to deliver on time and maintain quality.

Transmission production
Transmission production at a factory in Negeri Sembilan.

Last year, Perodua purchased around RM5.4 billion worth of parts from suppliers and at least 90% of the parts in its vehicles are local content. The suppliers themselves not only enjoy steady business from Perodua but a few are also supplying to Daihatsu factories overseas, an indication that Malaysian suppliers can also produce world-class products that meet the stringent quality demands of Japanese manufacturers.

Dato’ Zainal said he welcomed the healthy competition from Proton as it will only serve to motivate and strengthen Perodua. Furthermore, as Proton’s volumes rise, the suppliers will also prosper and be able to achieve better economies of scale with bigger orders from both carmakers. This will also help them lower their prices, a win-win situation for manufacturer and supplier.

Looking ahead
While the government expects GDP growth to be 4.8% in 2020, Perodua is cautious about its sales performance at this time until some issues – like the new National Automotive Policy – are clearer. So for now, the forecast for numbers remains at 240,000 with a market share target of 40%. Production volume is planned to rise by 4.1% or 10,000 units in anticipation of increased exports as well as fulfilling the backlog of orders for certain models.

Perodua Kancil
Providing affordable cars for Malaysians has been one of Perodua’s constant objectives from the time it started.

With regard to price increases predicted in the near future (due to a revision of taxation for vehicles), Dato’ Zainal gave assurance that this won’t happen for Perodua products right away. “Our mission has always been to provide affordable vehicles and we would not just pass on any increases to customers. We will address the situation by ‘counter-measures’ to try to keep prices stable for as long as possible,” he explained.

On new models to be launched, he did not elaborate on specific models although the market is buzzing with rumours of a new compact SUV designated the D55L. This is said to be based on the Daihatsu Rocky launched in Japan last year and sits on the DNGA (Daihatsu New Generation Architecture) platform.

Daihatsu Rocky
New Daihatsu Rocky launched in Japan last year is expected to be the basis of a new compact SUV model. How close will the Perodua version look to this?

However, Dato’ Zainal did share with us the product direction of the company which takes into account industry trends which could give clues to what the future product will have. In the slide, there were four subjects – Connected, Autonomous, Shared Services and Electric. These hint at features like cruise control which is a form of autonomous operation and might even be advanced cruise control with adaptive speeds. As it is, the A.S.A. driver assistance system already has autonomous capability such as automatic braking so Perodua may be able to get more advanced systems at a cost which allows them to be offered without raising the price.

‘Electric’ doesn’t necessarily mean an electric powertrain and Dato’ Zainal mentioned ‘downsizing’, the industry trend of reducing engine sizes but maintaining or improving performance through using direct fuel injection or turbocharging. Well, as it is, Perodua engines started off with an 850 cc engine in the Kancil and its range has had the smallest engines all this while. So they can’t get any smaller but adding an electric motor as a hybrid powertrain or using an electric compressor could be under study now.

Much of the advanced technology development would be done either by Daihatsu, its technical partner, or the suppliers. But where design and upper body development are concerned, Perodua R&D aims to further increase its capabilities. Since the development of the first Myvi, when Perodua was a ‘junior partner’ in the project which also involved Daihatsu and Toyota, the Malaysian carmaker’s capabilities have grown steadily. It reached a point where Malaysians could develop the Bezza sedan which is a model that you will not find in the Daihatsu range. Bear in mind that even adding a boot to the Axia involved engineering competence and it was not just a ‘cut-and-weld’ exercise.

Dato’ Zainal revealed that Daihatsu Indonesia has also called on Perodua R&D to assist in product development for models sold in Indonesia. He said that it is hoped that Perodua can become the ASEAN hub for Daihatsu where R&D is concerned. While Daihatsu’s operations in Indonesia are larger, they are more focused on production whereas Perodua has made bigger investments on R&D facilities.

Perodua
Aerial view of the Perodua complex

“We have invested RM1.4 billion to date, which is higher than what Indonesia has spent on R&D, and we plan to continue investments in this area. Some of the money will go into extending the test track to 5 kms so that testing can be more comprehensive. Therefore, we hope that Daihatsu will consider making Perodua its R&D hub for ASEAN while Indonesia could be a production hub,” he said.

Perodua has a strong position as market leader, which it certainly deserves. But it is not going to take this dominance for granted and ‘relax’ and even though Proton, its closest rival, is intent on regaining its No.1 position, Perodua will stay focused with its own strategic plans for the coming years.

Perodua centralises production of parts for old models with RM7 million investment

PISTON.MY

If you follow the history of Perodua, you will find that it had humble beginnings with a relatively small volume catering for the bottom end of the market, the entry-level segment. Proton had already been selling cars and dominating the market for 8 years and Perodua was like a ‘little brother’ selling low-priced minicars. Yet 27 years later, we see Perodua as the nation’s No.1 brand and although it still serves the entry-level segment, it is edging upwards with the newer products.

The success story of Perodua highlights the value of patience and a willingness to learn, rather than rushing forward before being fully prepared. Perodua has had a good teacher in Daihatsu, its partner, and formed a working culture that is a blend of Malaysian and Japanese which could well be the best of both worlds.

One of the important lessons Perodua has had is planning. They do a tremendous amount of market study before committing to a new model because once they do, they have to be able to do so at high volumes. They are no longer a small player and in order to maintain their high efficiency and productivity which enables them to keep their prices attractive, they need big numbers.

2020 Perodua Bezza

This has been the case with every model and with the Bezza, their first sedan, selling some 184,000 units over the past 3 years is certainly impressive. The Bezza’s appeal to a broad spectrum of the market has generated the big numbers and in the past couple of years, e-hailing operators (like those with Grab) have also found it to be an ideal car for their business, boosting the numbers.

What is not highlighted enough about the Bezza is that this sedan design is a truly Malaysian creation. There is no equivalent in the Daihatsu range and when Perodua wanted to do it, they were basically on their own. There was no commitment by Daihatsu to take the model for Indonesia as it does with the Myvi which it sells as the Daihatsu Sirion there.

That the Bezza has done so well has generated a lot of money for funding development of the updated 2020 version which is officially launched today. And as with every model it has developed, Perodua has paid a lot of attention to the feedback from customers and addressed issues to make the car better. For instance, the rear seat backrest angle was not comfortable and they have adjusted this to eliminate that complaint. The suspension settings have been revised to improve ride comfort and handling as well.

What’s new
On the outside, the 2020 Bezza is almost immediately identifiable with its facelift. It’s a bolder look with sharp LED headlamps that are standard for all four variants. The new look is complemented by the angular and reprofiled front bumper which has a large lower intake grille and imposing styling elements. Additional sportiness comes from two-tone side skirts, also standard across the range, with a restyled rear bumper

If you’re still not satisfied with the new looks and want more sportiness, you don’t have to go to an accessory shop to get the parts. Perodua has already prepared a bodykit in its GearUp accessory range specially for the Bezza. The RM2,000 cost for the bodykit can be included in the H-P loan so you pay for it over a number of years… a deal which an accessory shop would never be able to offer.

The Bezza 1.3-litre variants now have an exclusive colour – Garnet Red – which is one of two new colours, the other being Granite Grey. These join the four existing shades – Ivory White, Glittering Silver, Ocean Blue and Sugar Brown.

The cabin remains pretty much the same with enhancements largely for the 1.3-litre variants. The meters are now illuminated in white and keyless entry/start is now also provided. Keyless entry and pushbutton starting was something available only in more expensive models not so long ago and now it has come down to the Bezza segment, showing how fast Perodua has been able to bring costs down (working with its suppliers).

Focus on safety
But the focus of the improvements has been in safety, something which Perodua’s market surveys show keeps becoming more and more important to buyers. Reading about tragic accidents has probably made people think more about how safe their car must be and while Peroduas are small cars, they can still be safe to travel in by having driver assistance systems.

This is where Perodua’s Advanced Safety Assist 2.0 (ASA 2.0) system comes in and it is available in the Bezza AV, making it the most affordable sedan in Malaysia (under RM50,000 before including insurance) with such a feature. ASA 2.0 comprises Pedestrian Detection (up to 50 km/h), Pre-Collision Warning (up to 100 km/h), Pre-Collision Braking (up to 80 km/h), Front Departure Alert and Pedal Misoperation Control, all of which work together to mitigate collisions.

The Bezza X also get Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and traction control now, again showing that as soon as costs come down, Perodua will include a safety system in the variant. VSC and traction control were available only with the Bezza AV before. Incidentally, the AV variant also gets a reverse camera now while all variants get power-adjustable side mirrors and reverse sensors.

With the improvements, the 2020 Bezza will certainly keep finding more new customers and by the end of this month, Perodua expects to deliver 5,600 units. Thereafter, the monthly sales target for the model is 4,000 units, on average.

For the past week, social media has been buzzing with rumours and leaked information about an updated Perodua Bezza for 2020. In the past, some companies would just deny that a new or updated model was coming soon, often because it would affect sales of the current model. However, in these days of social media when the distinction between fact and fake are blurred, speculations can be damaging too so the best thing is to quickly release as much information as appropriate and end the speculation.

This morning, Perodua confirmed it will introduce an updated Bezza sedan, its first new model for the new year. Improvements made are based on customer feedback and the 2020 model will be available in 4 variants – 1.0 G with manual or automatic transmissions; 1.3 X Automatic; and 1.3 AV Automatic. As the company which puts the most motor vehicles on the road each year, Perodua knows it has a responsibility to ensure that its vehicles are in the best possible condition while being used. This is especially important during festive periods like the one that is one now, with Malaysians criss-crossing the country on their way to holiday resorts or doing the ‘balik kampung’ thing.

As part of its ongoing Perodua Road Safety Programme, the Malaysian carmaker started its Tweckbot complimentary vehicle inspection service in 2011. To date, over 8,000 vehicles have been inspected.

Next weekend (December 21/22), the Tweckbot service will be available at the ITCC Mall in Penampang from 10 am to 5 pm to offer free inspections of Perodua vehicles.

Perodua Tweckbot

The vehicle inspection covers over 50 points including the engine, transmission, cooling system, brakes, power steering, clutch, tyres, suspension and electrics. Owners will be informed if any issue is found and such an alert could help them avoid an accident or inconvenience of a breakdown along their journey.

Owners who send their vehicles for the Tweckbot inspection can get a 20% discount voucher redeemable for the purchase of selected parts and accessories at any authorised Perodua service centre (terms and conditions apply).

Perodua Tweckbot

“As Christmas and the New Year approach, many will be taking to the roads for vacations and to visit family and friends. Therefore it is crucial that their vehicles are in good working order at this time, more so considering the large travel distances in East Malaysia. The Perodua Tweckbot team will thoroughly check your vehicle and give you a condition report for free. While you wait, our friendly staff will engage you in fun activities designed to increase road safety awareness,” said Perodua’s President & CEO, Dato’ Zainal Abidin Ahmad.

“Perodua Tweckbot aims to promote the importance of regular vehicle checks, servicing them at authorised Perodua outlets and only using genuine Perodua products and parts, all in the name of safety. “Most of all, it represents our commitment to always provide our valued customers with quality service and workmanship for their total peace of mind,” added Dato’ Zainal.
