One of the oldest Fiat cars in existence will make its way from Hyde Park in London down to Madeira Drive in Brighton, as part of the notorious heritage trial on 5th November, 2017. This 1899 Fiat 3½hp is owned by FCA UK Ltd, and is on permanent display at the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu.

The car can seat two adults and two small children facing the driver – not very comfortable but it works. Powering this vehicle is a horizontal two-cylinder engine of 697cc that is mated to a three-speed (no reverse) gearbox. This Fiat can reach a top speed of 34km/h and return a fuel consumption figure of 14.9km/L.

FIAT or Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino, was founded by Turin investors in July 1899. It initially operated out of a temporary factory but moved into a purpose-built one in March 1900. The company benefited greatly from the acquisition of two businesses, one of them being a bicycle manufacturer.

This company had a prototype car called the Welleyes, which Fiat used to derive its own car. From there, Fiat grew to an industrial giant and is now, one of the world’s largest automotive manufacturers.

The automobile has come along way since its humble beginnings, and this 1899 Fiat 3½hp is a testament to that. Many of the creature comforts and technology that we take for granted today came about out of necessity as a result of attempts of modernizing early vehicles to suit customers’ needs.

The legendary Fiat 500, the same vehicle that helped mobilise Italy, has been honored by the Italian State Mint with the introduction of a limited edition silver coin. It has been introduced to commemorate the car’s 60th anniversary and the impact it has left on the lives of many Italians.

Unveiled by the Italian Ministry of Economics and Finance, the Fiat 500 coin has a monetary value of €5 or RM 24.62 and was designed by master engraver Claudia Momoni. Only 4,000 of these coins will ever be minted, which should make it a collector’s item very soon.

One side of the coin depicts the 1957 Fiat 500 and the current model, with the words ‘Repubblica Italiana’. The other side shows the profile of the classic 500 with the dates 1957 and 2017. The former symbolizes the year that the 500 was first produced. The later signifies the year of which the coin will be produced, which is this year.

Apart from this, the coin also bears the initial ‘R’ which stands for Rome, the place where it was minted, and the name of the engraver alongside a Fiat 500 logo in the original style. Collectors can buy it from Istituto del Poligrafico e della Zecca for €40 or RM197.

Besides the coin, the Fiat 500’s 60th birthday was also celebrated by the launching of a commemorative stamp that was launched by the Italian Post Office earlier this year. Adding to that, the car will become a a permanent addition to the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.

During the its history, the 500 has touched many lives and not only served as a mode of transportation but a fashion icon as well. It mobilized post-war Italy and become a popular car all over the world.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles CEO and effectively head honcho of Ferrari, has confirmed that a Ferrari SUV or a FUV if you will, is in the cards. Sergio Macrchionne confirmed to Bloomberg that the Italian automaker will be building such a vehicle but admitted that they won’t be rushing into anything.

Marchionne’s reasoning behind this is, the brand needs to understand the new relationship and ensure that the new vehicle remains exclusive while still remaining attainable. Unlike Porsche with the Cayenne, Ferrari isn’t interested in creating a high volume SUV to improve its bottom line.

Rather, the automaker wants to make an SUV that is blessed with Ferrari credentials, be able to build them in a ‘sufficient enough volume’ yet, making sure that like many vehicles that preceded it, a certain level of exclusivity is maintained for added value.

Regarding rumours of a potential sell off of Jeep to Chinese automotive giant Great Wall, Marchionne refuted the claim stating that such a move was not be in the company’s best interest at the moment. Jeep holds great value to FCA and though it is opened to a tie up with other automakers to improve its product portfolio, it won’t happen overnight.

This comes after rumours surfaced in August that Great Wall Motor had placed a bid to FCA for the aqquistion of its highly coveted SUV brand, Jeep. In recent years, Chinese automakers have been attempting to establish a beachhead in western markets. Like Geely with the acquisition of Volvo and Lotus, Great Wall may be trying to mimic the move with Jeep.

Whatever the case maybe, FCA’s decision to turn down the proposal, will enable Ferrari to employ the expertise of Jeep’s engineers and their wealth of knowledge as the Italian firm goes to work on creating their very own SUV. Much to the dismay of Ferrari purists, the allure of luxury SUVs has proven too strong for the automaker to resist.

In as little as 30 months, we might be able to get a glimpse of the new SUV, which is the timeframe that Marchionne has given before they decide on production details. This, is a case of never say never, which begs the question, when will we see another Lamborghini SUV?

Maserati has given its Ghibli GranLusso a midlife facelift by making a few tweaks to the vehicle’s overall styling. Slated for a global debut at the Chengdu Motorshow, in China, on August 25th, the latest car will feature an improved design as well as advanced technological features.

Compared to its predecessor, which was launched 4 years ago, the new one come with a unique front bumper with dedicated chrome inserts and new front grille with chrome bars. The overall look of the front fascia is inline with the Italian automaker’s current design language.

the GranLusso badge at the base of the front fenders and body coloured side skirts are indications that this is the facelift model. Other telltale signs include the addition of Adaptive full LED Headlights with glare free Matrix High-Beam and active ADAS functionalities (autonomous driving).

According to the automaker, the restyling of the bodywork has improved aerodynamic efficiency by a noticeable amount, which should help stability at higher speeds. Then there’s the edition of autonomous driving tech, which allow the car to be more intelligent than its predecessor.

The new Ghibli GranLusso is a marked improvement over the car it replaces and despite the changes being mostly visual, Maserati has managed to add enough to allow the car to remain fresh and up to date. That said, it will still be going up against some seriously stiff competition from the likes of BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

Based on a recent report by Automotive News, Great Wall, a Chinese automaker has expressed interest in buying the American SUV maker, Jeep. Parent company Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), has so far denied the claims stating that it has not been contacted by said party.

Great Wall plans on becoming a global player in the SUV market and by snapping up Jeep, an establishment of 4×4 vehicles, will be able to realize that goal a lot sooner than expected. The Jeep has a wealth of knowledge and technology that have kept the company competitive in major markets in the US and abroad.

Reports say that Jeep is worth more on its own than FCA as a company who’s portfolio includes Fiat, Dodge, Chrysler, Alfa Romeo and Maserati. This is understandable considering the brand’s value and heritage that traces back to World War II.

Great Wall has already set up R&D centres in Detroit and Los Angeles to study trends in the US to help it plan its strategy on penetrating that market. Unlike most other countries, the demand for SUVs and pick-trucks in the US are significantly higher than that for regular econoboxes. This then is a prime area for the Chinese automaker to secure a beachhead.

This is purely speculative, but, if FCA chooses to sell Jeep to Great Wall, that would cause serious consequences for the brand as a whole. Granted, FCA has mulled over the idea of spinning Jeep off as a separate entity before, but that was to allow for better stability.

Whatever the case maybe, if FCA does cave and hands over the keys to its kingdom to Great Wall, that would weaken the American company further. And this will put homegrown automakers like Ford and General Motors on notice that the days of complacency are over.

Lately, many high-end luxury car brands have taken notice of the SUV craze and have decided to build one of their own. Porsche has the Cayenne and Macan, Bentley has the Benteyga, Maserati has the Levante SUV and Rolls-Royce will be coming out with one too.

Luxury SUVs have been in high demand for quite a while and automakers have noticed this and are capitalizing on it. Now, Ferrari, the most respected name in motoring wants ‘in’ on the action, as well.

Based on an article from the US edition of the Bussiness Insider, CEO of Ferrari’s parent company, Fiat Chyrsler Automobiles (FCA), Sergio Marchionne said that he wouldn’t rule out the possibility of the Italian sports car maker building an SUV. Though stopping short of revealing the time frame, he did imply that the possibility was quite real.

He added that it would be a crime to prevent Ferrari engineers from exploring the possibility of building a Ferrari version of a vehicle with ‘utilitarian features, to travel through uncharted territory’.

Marchionne went on to admit that the SUV market and demand for such vehicles were too big to ignore, and mentioned that Ferrari sees potential in building such a vehicle. However, when asked if the automaker would follow in the footsteps of Porsche with the Cayenne, he replied, “hell no.”

The news seems rather vague, but there is no doubt in our minds that Ferrari is mulling over the idea of creating a Porsche Cayenne rival albeit, more expensive and built in smaller numbers. Ferrari is adamant that unlike Porsche, it want’s to maintain a certain level of exclusivity with its vehicles.

As such, expect more hair-raising news from Ferrari in the coming months when it divulges more about the potential of creating its own SUV. This will definitely seem like stomach-churning news for the Ferrari tifosi and purists alike – so stay tuned.

Tesla’s resilience when faced with almost insurmountable challenges of making a practical electric car, has had an impact on the industry. It wasn’t too long ago when many mainstream automakers suggested that producing a practical electric car was still some ways off, and that the internal combustion engine was here to stay.

Now however, many have changed their tune and are willing to step into relatively uncharted waters and begin mass producing electrified powertrains. Not long ago, Volvo announced that it will only be building hybrid or fully electric vehicles from 2019 onward. Hyundai too are planning on a similar strategy sometime in the near future.

And if an article published by Autocar UK is to be believed, it would appear that Maserati, a well known Italian sports car company has decided to take the electrified route as well. It’s parent company FCA (Fiat Chrysler Autombiles) who also owns Fiat, Alfa Romeo and Dodge, want Maserati to take the lead and produce electrified vehicles and technology.

This same technology can then be adapted by the rest of the brands under the FCA umbrella and ensure that about half of the company’s model range comprises of either hybrid or EVs by 2022.

That said, the first electrified Maserati, which will probably be a hybrid, is predicted to be unveiled by 2020 at the earliest and may be based on the Alfieri concept that debuted at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show.

The article goes on to speculate that Prior to the launch of that vehicle, Maserati might hybridize other current generation vehicles like the Levante SUV. Nothing is set in stone at the moment, but we won’t be surprised if the Italian automaker chooses to go fully electric in the not so distant future.

Many car buyers around the world are beginning to embrace hybrid and electric vehicles as the future of personal mobility. And as soon as there is sufficient infrastructure to sustain their practicality as daily drivers, that will be the final nail in the coffin of the internal combustion engine.

Dodge’s Durango SRT is set to be one of the most powerful 3-row SUV in existence. Based on the standard Durango, this SRT version gets a whole host of upgrades most notable of which is the 6.2-litre (392 cubic-inch) HEMI V8. It produces 475bhp and is able to launched the car from 0-100km/h in just 4.4 seconds, mind-blowing numbers considering what is supposed to be a people carrier.

New exterior tweaks include a widebody design that include aggressive new bumpers, fenders and skirting that give the entire vehicle a sporty appearance. The SRT hood scoop on the bonnet, is fully functional with an air inlet duct flanked by head extractors.

Inside, there’s (in Dodge’s words) Demonic Red Laguna Leahter upholstery a new carbon fibre trim with Durango SRT branding, paddle shifters, as well as heated and ventilated front and heated second-row captain’s chairs with embroidered SRT logos .

As icing on the cake, owners of this vehicle will be given a one full-day session at the Bob Bondurant School of High Performance Driving, to help them hone their skills of taming this beast of an SUV.

“The new 2018 Dodge Durango SRT is America’s fastest, most powerful and most capable three-row SUV,” said Tim Kuniskis, Head of Passenger Cars Brands, Dodge, SRT, Chrysler and FIAT – FCA North America. “This is what you get, when you take everything great about the Durango and combine it with the performance of the Charger SRT: a 12-second quarter mile, 8,700-pound-toy hauling, three-row muscle car.”

Changes that were made that set it apart from the base vehicle include the following:

  • New performance-tuned AWD system
  • Standard TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission specifically calibrated for the Dodge Durango SRT
  • New Brembo high-performance six-piston (front) and four-piston (rear) calipers and vented rotors
  • New SRT seven-mode drive system
  • New Track Mode delivers maximum performance track driving with 160-millisecond shifts and up to 70 percent of engine torque to the rear wheels
  • Sophisticated Active Damping System opens and closes the Durango SRT’s suspension’s damper valves
  • Stiffer front springs (3 percent), stiffer rear springs (16 percent) and stiffer rear sway bar (18 percent)

Dodge is offering the vehicle with seven different exterior colours, which include B5 Blue, Billet Clear Coat, Bruiser Grey Clear Coat, DB Black Clear Coat, Granite Clear Coat, Octane Red Pearl Coat and White Knuckle Clear Coat.

Customers of the Dodge Durango SRT can expect to see this vehicle in showrooms by the end of 2017 with prices near to that of the automaker’s high performance muscle cars.

Many don’t realize that the Beetle wasn’t the only icon of the early era of the automotive industry, it shared the limelight with the rather chic little Italian called, Fiat 500. Measuring just 2.97m long and 1.32m wide, this was the car that made personal transportation attainable for the average Italian.

It was known as a little car that could do big things. Thanks to the minuscule dimensions, it was small enough to fit through the narrow Italian streets while being spacious enough to fit four adults. Its 500cc engine may have only had 18bhp, but that was enough and helped deliver some pretty impressive fuel consumption figures.

Like the original Beetle, it was gender neutral, meaning it appealed to both men and women. Neither gender felt out of place while driving the 500, and rightly so. It’s classic silhouette is relatively timeless and has become somewhat of a style and fashion icon.

A car with such history deserves recognition, which is why the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), in New York has acquired a Fiat 500 and will showcase it along with the rest of its collection. It’s only fitting that that they did this because the 500, turns 60 this year. Not many cars are given this much importance when they turn 60, but then again how many have actually altered car design quite like the 500?

“While the Fiat 500 has unquestionably left its mark on automotive history, it is equally true that it has never been just a car,” said Olivier François, Head of FIAT Brand and Chief Marketing Officer, FCA – Global. “”n its 60 years of history, the 500 has transcended its material manifestation to enter the collective imagination and become an icon, which has now the honor of being certified by being acquired by MoMA in a tribute to its artistic and cultural value.”

Fiat sold about 4 million Fiat 500 cars between 1957 to 1975 and in that same time frame, various variants of the 500 were produced. Initially there was only the 500, then there was the Sport, D, F, L (the most comfortable) and finally, the R.

The 500 nameplate was revived in 2007, when Fiat introduced the new car which, though completely new, shared some similarities in design to the original. Though it may not have made the same impact as its predecessor, Fiat sold more than 2 million of them in the 10 years that it has been in production.

FCA or Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, has announced that it has formally filed an application for diesel emission certification with the US’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and California Air Resources Board (CARB) for its emission software calibrations. Vehicles like the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Ram 1500 will feature such a system, which will govern emissions of the various diesel engines. This is an attempt by FCA to clarify issues related to the company’s emissions control technology that are incorporated in its software.

FCA is trying to avoid the diesel gate scandal that has plagued Volkswagen these past few years by coming clean regarding it’s software’s inner workings and the resultant emissions from the diesel engines that use it. The company says that by doing this, it should put to rest the EPA’s concerns regarding the hotly discussed topic of emissions software.

Besides the new vehicles, FCA plans on installing said software in 2014-2016 model year Jeep Grand Cherokee and Ram 1500 diesel variants, provided that it receives the green light from the EPA and CARB. Owners of said vehicles will be able to have the software updated at their nearest FCA dealerships. Once done, owners could expect better emissions performance that should not impact performance or fuel efficiency in any way.
